Lab Rat's "Rolling Loud": A Sonic Lab-yrinth We're Still Mapping Lab Rat, the brainchild of Australian solo artist Dylan James, drops "Rolling Loud" onto our auditory plates, and it's... a lot. Like finding a half-eaten burrito in a washing machine – unexpected, a little messy, and you're not quite sure how you feel about it. It's alt-rock grunge rap, the musical equivalent of a Frankenstein's monster stitched together with ripped denim and existential angst. https://open.spotify.com/track/2nj7SwgzSJUCoaGKBKLLeT?si=8c79aa48403b479c The single slams into you with the subtlety of a dropped anvil. It thumps and howls. "Rolling Loud" is supposedly about celebrating life to the fullest, embracing the chaos. The lyrics are clear, Dylan has made no attempt to create an air of mystic, he is telling it to us straight. But wait! There's also a strong and darker theme here. This celebration comes across like someone trying to convince themselves they're having fun at a party they secretly hate. It's the "drunk leading the blind," as the song perfectly puts it – a swirling vortex of self-destructive behavior, fueled by, well, who knows what? Probably whatever's on special at the metaphorical liquor store of the soul. [caption id="attachment_58729" align="alignnone" width="2000"] Lab Rat's "Rolling Loud": A Sonic Lab-yrinth We're Still Mapping[/caption] It conjures, oddly, the feeling of watching a 19th-century factory worker stumble home after a 16-hour shift, only instead of coal dust, he's covered in glitter and regret. It seems we have some controlled and well executed confusion on our hands here. The track makes no apology. Its purpose achieved? I don't think so. Musically, it’s the sonic representation of that feeling when you walk into a room and forget why you’re there. Except the room is on fire. And there's a clown juggling chainsaws. A strangely familiar beat, not disimilar to a heart murmur. So, is "Rolling Loud" a celebration or a cry for help? Perhaps, like Schrödinger's cat, it's both at the same time. Does life even make sense? Does this single? Ponder that while listening, repeat, optional. Follow Lab Rat on YouTube and TikTok.

Introduction
Tumblr media
We’ve all experienced the frustration that is linked to sewing machine rage. Countless times I have felt irritated, disinterested or even fed-up with my machine being overly dramatic because I dared to adjust the tension ever so much too tightly. Well, that all changed when I decided that it is time to put my engineering degree to good use. Granted, it’s for electronic engineering, but this machine runs on electricity which is sort of related so it shouldn’t be that hard. Right?
I’ve taught myself to sew as a hobby for a couple of years and during that time, I have come to learn a lot about how to keep my machine from throwing a fit. I learned a whole heap of skills, from performing basic servicing to figuring out exactly how to make it do exactly what I want it to. I’ve been meaning to pass my knowledge down and have done so by helping friends, as well as starting my own little collection of various mistreated or abandoned machines to fix up.
While my sewing is still definitely firmly lodged in the “amateur” category, I have managed to make a couple of pieces I am very proud of. Especially from hard to work with fabrics like leathers and too many layers. While some have scoffed at my little Singer not being good enough to handle such endeavors, I proved them wrong by showing how I got my girl to power through those chunky fabrics.
This blog aims to address every single issue I encountered, self-inflicted, machine error, friend suggestion or otherwise and showing a meaningful way to troubleshoot the error without having to go through a million Google searches of “help, skipped stitches” that only offer the advice “rethread your machine or change the needle.”
For those interested, I own three machines, whom you will meet over the course of the blog.
Tumblr media
Tailor Swift- She is my Singer Heavy Duty model. She has been my faithful little labrat when it comes to sewing strange things. She has been forcefed leathers, foam, a tent and a bunch of general outfits.
Tumblr media
Dolly Parton- She is my gorgeous antique I rescued. She came to me, stuck, rusted and in horrible shape. She’s a 1920’s (I believe) shuttle bobbin machine and she often gets used when I don’t feel like hunting for power points.
Tumblr media
Jolene – She is my most recent find. A front loader Janome model of unknown year/make. She’s been living on my desk and been used in most of my projects of recent.

The Devils Train by the lab rats
First sorry for disappearing off the website I literally forgot to post despite spending multiple hours a day on here *finger guns*
a n y w a y s
The song ‘the Devil’s Train’ by the Labrats was made for Ford and Dipper. I’d leave it at that but I’m incapable of shutting up and haven’t posted in forever.
Lyrics - https://genius.com/The-lab-rats-devils-train-lyrics
The song is literally about tripping on acid but what if acid a metaphor for Bill. I think that the narrator is Dipper talking about struggling with being possessed. But here the the grandfather (Ford) ran off and never got to meet Dipper. Ford and Dipper’s cannon bond was unlike anything Dipper had with anyone else, and was necessary for him to gain the strength needed to defeat Bill, but if that never happened and Mabel wasn’t there either would he have been as strong? In the song, Dipper gave into the voice by the tracks (Bill). While Bill was being erased in Stan’s mind, he offered him similar things to what the guy from the train tracks offered the singer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the narrator says he ignored all the warnings against what he was doing, it reminds me of all the warnings and laws that Stan ignored to bring back Ford. There could be something that Dipper wants (I imagine he would be older here), which is why he would be making deals with demons. I love finding similarities between Dipper and the gruncles and I think this song is perfect for that
also shoutout to Tumblr for being the one place I don’t feel guilty about talking about Gravity Falls for hours, I might make a part two to this, or just with other songs from my list.

Have some fan made mask ideas I got on the back burner-
The Tabby - (Ginger Cat, round shaped head with an expression of a smirk and thin green eyes. The clothing is that of a thief or a rouge with a hood around there costume’s neck and shoulders to cloak the singer’s lower jaw when they sing. The singer could either be male or female, but the costume itself does not have a distinct body type except for rectangular.)
The Frog - (A frog prince theme, a green frog with brown eyes and a smile on its face. The mask has freckles all over the frog, including on the gloves which have little pads on the end. The frog’s attire is mostly reds and golds, with classic princely attire such as puffy shoulders and a face sheith on its waist. The frog also has a golden crown on its head with a ruby in its centre. The frog would call themselves a prince, but the singer could be male or female.)
The TV - (This character would be a TV headed person, with a dark blue and purple colour palette. The TV would represent an old retro TV with two antenna sticking out from the top of its head in a V shape. The character would be seen wearing a tux, but with the bottoms of its jacket at the front and back turning into small squares, simulating pixels. The screen displayed would be a face similar to ‘:D’, as it would be better to have the display with an open mouth whilst singing than a closed one. The celebrity would be male.)
Other mask names include:
The Orca (Playful sailor theming)
The Golem (Mountainous theming)
The Bedbug (Robber theming)
The Labrat (Mad Scientist theming)

Dror Yikra is a Shabbat piyyut composed by Dunash ben Labrat around 960 CE, sometimes sung at dinner on Friday night.  It shares a meter with Adon Olam, and people sometimes sing it to “fun” tunes, as with Adon Olam.  Dror Yikra represents a new poetic tradition that was emerging in Spain around the year 1000 CE, in which poets combined imaginative Biblical imagery and old Hebrew rhyming and acrostic techniques with Arabic poetic meters.  It’s a song about freedom, and a plea to the Divine to protect and redeem Israel.
This setting is fairly recent!  You’re hearing Dana International, a trans singer and performer who was Israel’s first real drag queen and subsequently won Eurovision in 1998 (this was somewhat before the time when the concept of an Israeli winning Eurovision and the next iteration of Eurovision being held in Israel would give European leftists conniption fits).  She performed this at Eurovision in 1999, and in this case, the conniption fits were had by ultra-Orthodox contingents who were not happy that a trans former drag queen was performing a sacred piyyut!
Everyone’s a critic.

Lab Rat's "Drunk" Is A Brutally Honest Anthem of Survival You guys remember “Lab Rat”? We recently had the opportunity to listen to “Exit Path”, but you know? Lab Rat isn’t here to make you comfortable, he’s here to make you feel something real. His latest single "Drunk" takes us for a ride through the ashes of a toxic relationship, with the ferocity of someone willing to say they survived and lived to tell the tale. Lab Rat's "Drunk" is not your normal breakup track. It's an alt rock grit-meets unflinching rap storytelling sonic explosion. From the very first haunting guitar strum a sweeping tide washes you away into the ethos of late night phone calls, messy emotions and the desperate dance of a misdirected relationship that lord its destructive glory plus magnetic pull. https://www.musicarenagh.com/lab-rat-turning-trauma-into-music-with-exit-path/ Dylan James (aka Lab Rat) isn’t just making music, he is exorcising demons. The track was born of a bassline conceived six years ago and brought into focus in the wake of a troubled relationship, and it sounds like a personal confession, accompanied by a thunderous soundtrack. His delivery is a job of walking on a razor thin line between rap’s rhythmic punch and grunge’s emotional rawness. The production is beautifully unpolished, just as the track’s thematic core. The song itself is about that crazy relationship, so it’s about the same amount of controlled chaos. Guitar riffs feel like catching echoes of memories that never quite get resolved, and the rhythm section pounds out like a heartbeat, urgent and relentless. Its authenticity is what makes "Drunk" stand out. Lab Rat did not manufacture emotion - it is the honest exploration of trauma and depression on the road to self discovery. The chorus sounds like a rallying cry for anybody who’s ever been stuck in a bad cycle they know is wrong, but can’t easily get out of. With each note lab rat's journey - from addiction to his sound - is infused with meaning. He’s not just making music, he is building a lifeline for listeners who are taking the journey to their own emotional landscape. For those who appreciate music that refuses to be comfortable, that challenges and confronts, "Drunk" is essential listening. Lab Rat is proving he's not just an artist to watch - he's an artist that demands to be heard. LAB RAT: Turning Trauma into Music with 'Exit Path' Meet LAB RAT, the Melbourne-based alt-rock grunge-rap artist who's captivating audiences with his profoundly personal and emotionally charged music. Born Dylan James, LAB RAT's journey as a musician is marked by resilience and transformation, having faced and overcome trauma, depression, and addiction. His distinctive sound, forged from a fusion of grunge, rap, and alternative rock, serves as a testament to the therapeutic power of music. LAB RAT's latest single, "Exit Path", released via Mushroom Pillow Music, delves into the lasting impact of childhood trauma. Through searing lyrics and an explosive blend of rap and rock, he invites listeners into his world, where vulnerability and strength intersect. In this exclusive interview, LAB RAT offers a rare glimpse into his creative process, sharing the inspirations and emotions that shaped "Exit Path". He also reflects on his musical evolution and the deeply personal themes that underpin his work. With candor and intensity, LAB RAT reveals the complexities of his artistry, illuminating the mind behind the music. This conversation provides a nuanced understanding of LAB RAT's vision, creativity, and determination, mirroring the intensity and introspection that define his remarkable sound. Listen to Exit Path https://open.spotify.com/track/5V4smCK94fvBpf12FUPDfZ?si=M5Ak_DAAS--LqpQtxNJj_A Follow Lab Rat on Spotify Youtube Tiktok Exit Path is an intriguing title. What inspired the concept behind this project, and how did it evolve from idea to final product? Its original name was ‘Spencer Park’ however we decided to rename it a couple of days before release. It evolved very quickly, the instrumental was written in about 10 minutes and 3 months later I’d finally worked up the courage to try finish it vocally. Can you walk us through your creative process for this upcoming album? Did it differ from how you’ve approached previous projects? I think I just got better as a song writer. It was written during covid so it was a little restricted but thankfully by the time covid hit me and my producer both had bedroom set ups so we could keep creating. What is the central theme or message you aim to convey with Exit Path? Is there a particular narrative or personal experience that influenced the music? It’s all in the music. How does this upcoming album reflect your musical evolution? Are there specific influences or styles you drew from when crafting the album? I think our sound got a lot more refined on this album. As much as I love doing it, I’ve always struggled with blending hiphop with alternative music but I feel like we did a good job on this project. The sound feels dynamic and layered. Were there any artists or genres that influenced its sonic direction? A lot. Instrumentally it’s been influenced by many bands from the alternative 90’s scene Vocally, the flow is actually super influenced by Grime artists like Dizzee, P Money & D double E [caption id="attachment_57343" align="alignnone" width="2000"] Instrumentally it’s been influenced by many bands from the alternative 90’s scene[/caption] Do you have a favourite track from the album that holds special meaning to you? What’s the story behind it? You are not Alone & Lucid Dreams always hit different. There seems to be a darker, introspective tone to some tracks on the album. Can you share the emotions or experiences that shaped this mood? Addiction, Depression & Reflection What kind of emotional journey do you hope listeners experience while listening to the album I hope the album can help anybody who needs it. I hope at the bare minimum you enjoy a couple of riffs. Do you have any visual components or music videos planned for the album? How do the visuals complement the themes of the album? We’ve got an amazing music video done for ‘Exit Path’ and I’m pretty sure in a few months we’ll have another one done for the single ‘Drunk’ How does Exit Path set the stage for
your future work? Should we expect more releases in a similar style or will you explore different musical directions? I’m honestly not to sure. I think it will get heavier in the future but we’ll see. https://open.spotify.com/artist/7zluiuhZdFd2OucFmpLLos?si=b7Vk2_-_Q7C7BQ0Flohz6g What’s next for you following the release of the album? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re excited about? I’m very excited for the album to drop, I already have the follow up written and I just want the people to hear it. The album feels deeply personal at times. How much of your own life and experiences made their way into the lyrics and production? A lot. Looking back, what has been the most rewarding part of creating this album? Any lessons or insights you’ve gained from the process? I learn a lot with the process of every album but the lesson from this one is to let go of control.
