Socks A La Mode & Laine Magazine
Megan-Anne has informed me this post cannot consist of several different gifs of people screaming. Apparently, that’s “not good journalism” or something. I won’t pretend to understand or agree, but she’s the CEO on Thursdays, so I have to do what she says. Without further ado, I shall share my glorious news with you: my pattern “Socks À La Mode” is being featured in Issue 17 of Laine…

Lain: I got an e-mail from the editors today. I’m glad. Misato-chan’s artwork came first. I saw her sketch over 2 months before the other one was published. Could this sort of thing happen often? The same picture at the same time, both by a Japanese, all by coincidence? What is that other artist like? I couldn’t find a home page for her. I wish I had information about her. I know that Misato-chan was right all along, and I feel much better now. I’ll go to Misato-chan’s home tomorrow.

and it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time as i stared as my shoes in the icu that reeked of piss and 409 and i rationed my breaths as i said to myself that i’d already taken too much today as each descending peak on the lcd took you a little farther away from me away from me amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines in a place where we only say goodbye it stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds AND I KNEW THAT YOU WERE A TRUTH I WOULD RATHER LOSE THAN TO HAVE NEVER LAIN BESIDE AT ALL!!!! and i looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the tv entertained itself cause there’s no comfort in the waiting room just nervous paces bracing for bad news then the nurse comes ‘round and everyone lifts their heeeeeaaaaads but i’m thinking of what sarah said….that love is watching someone die. SO WHO’S GONNA WATCH YOU DIE!!! SO WHO’S GONNA WATCH YOU DIE!!!!! SO WHO’S GONNA WATCH YOU DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I love about the serlialized Substack novel format is that this is how about half of these books were originally published - Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, even Herman Melville serialized stories in magazines (though not Moby Dick itself). We're returning to the roots of the form. Resurrecting something that's lain dormant for a generation. Maybe it's now novels should be published.
Very excited to see what happens with new, original books coming out this way too (not that I have a stake in that or anything lol).
