Amemasu
Look up the term ‘Amemasu’, and you might be met with the simple white-spotted char. However, tack on the word ‘yokai’, and you’ll learn of giant whales or fish from Ainu folklore that live in the lakes of northern Honshu. There are said to be multiple Amemasu, with some of the biggest living in Lake Mashū and Lake Shikotsu in Hokkaidō.
An Amemasu is a shapeshifting creature, able to turn into a human. It usually becomes a beautiful young woman with the intent of luring foolish young men to their deaths. You can identify them when in human form, however, as their skin will be cold and clammy, much like that of a fish.
There are a few different legends about the creature. Similar to Bahamut, a fish we’ll get to soon, the residents of Hokkaidō believe that the Amemasu holds up the earth. When the giant fish or whale becomes tired, it shifts, causing earthquakes. In Akita Prefecture, there’s a place called Amemasu Otoshi. According to legend, the Amemasu was so powerful that it was able to kill a hawk (despite dying, as well, in the end).
Another legend is about Lake Kussharo, also in Hokkaidō. An Amemasu resided in the lake, one with a head that looked much like a rock. One day, Otashitonkuru, an Ainu hero, took a harpoon and tried to poke the cryptid’s eyes out. The fish fought back, and, desperate to hold onto the harpoon, Otashitonkuru grabbed ahold of a large rock. The creature ended up pulling so hard that it dragged to rock into the middle of the lake, creating the small island that now sits in the middle.
Another legend comes from Minabe, Wakayama prefecture. A large whirlpool appeared in a deep pond, where a giant Amemasu lived. It would emerge from the pond every spring, taking the form of a beautiful young woman. For two or three days, it would lure men away, taking them to a place where nobody could find them. Then, one day, a cormorant dove into the pond to hunt for fish, and was swallowed by the creature. However, the Amemasu floated to the surface, dead. The cormorant burst from the creature’s body.
A final tale is about the flat Konsengen’ya plain. A deer came down to have a drink of water, and was subsequently swallowed by an Amemasu. However, the deer’s antler rip open the cryptid’s stomach, killing it. The corpse of the creature blocks the lake, making floods a real danger. So, a god in the form of a bird warns people living nearby. Those who lived upstream took to higher ground, while those who lived downstream didn’t believe the bird. They go and find the Amemasu, dragging away its body. This caused the built up water to flow downstream and wipe out everything, creating the Konsengen’ya plain.
In addition to the legends, the Amemasu is said to attack boats and cause earthquakes.

I can't find a lot of stuff about him, so how about some general relationship headcanons on boutaro the pirate? like dating the character between the initial prison escape and when he joins sugimoto's group?
Hey anon, thanks for your ask! Admittedly, I had to recheck the manga for information about our beloved pirate (I wanted to be as accurate as I could possibly be), so I hope I did him justice!
I’m still unclear on the correct timeline of when the prisoners escaped Abashiri and when the gold hunt started with Sugimoto and Asirpa (I know for sure that the two met at wintertime, and by the time we meet Boutarou in the manga, it’s spring already, so safe to say it’s been more than a year). So for the sake of this ask, I’ll say that the tattooed prisoners escaped Abashiri a month or two before Sugimoto went to Hokkaido and met Asirpa.
Since Bouatarou the Pirate is a character that hasn’t been introduced in the anime yet, I’ll just keep the hcs under the cut! Warning, there are a lot of things under there.
Boutarou the Pirate/Fusatarou Oosawa Shinigami From the Depths
Tumblr media
First things first, some canon background information: I’m not exactly sure what he did it the span of the one year that he spent away from Abashiri prison. Based on what I was able to read in the chapters that feature him, he met Heita (during winter) at Lake Shikotsu to retrieve some gold dust samples from the gold dust that Wilk/Noppera-bou’s capsized boat had (chapter 224). Aside from that, he met Yakuza Boss Wakayama in Sapporo very early on the hunt — as both Wakayama is still alive and because Boutarou still believed in skinning the others to find the gold (chapter 236). It’s canon that he has a specific modus operandi wherein he “...started to pull people into the water, drown them, and strip them of their valuables” (chapter 224, page 14). It’s also canon that he continues his criminal activities, even setting some of his close associates free when they were being transferred from Kabato Prison to Abashiri Prison (chapter 223).
It is summertime and you live at a village near the Ishikari river (one of your favorite spots because of how serene the river is and because you get to gaze at the steamboats that pass by) and you just so happen to see him swimming and taking a bath. You’ve never seen him nor those interesting tattoos before in your entire life. But he is…handsome, you admit to yourself. Long hair flowing down smoothly into the water, the tips floating on its surface. A strong body with intricate tattoos that weave against his every sinew and flesh.
Though you try to keep quiet, he quickly spots you and chats with you. Very polite and amicable, you quickly like the charming stranger. That’s how the two of you meet.
General Relationship Headcanons
I feel like Boutarou the Pirate is a bit…cautious when it comes to love. He has big plans, and he seeks to achieve them through less-than-savory means. He knows that not everyone can accept the fact that he’s a criminal and that he’s willing to get his hands dirty and bloodied for the sake of his future. I think before you two progress anywhere further than just being friends (when the both of you are showing signs of attraction to each other), he’ll put you to the test: when he shows you that he’s more than the water-loving friend you’ve come to know…. when he shows you why he got the nickname of pirate…will you still love him?
If you balk at the reality of Boutarou the Pirate, he will calmly ask you to go back to the village and forget about him. He doesn’t care if you call the police on him, because he’s never coming back near your village again. He will cherish the time you had spent with one another, yet his dreams come first and foremost. But if for some reason you maintain your love and devotion for him despite knowing he’s a criminal…he will trust you with his heart, his dreams, and his true name. Only you can call him Fusatarou Oosawa (when the two of you are alone together, he teases you by asking you to call him “Oosa-chan”).
I think a major dealbreaker for Boutarou in any romantic relationship is if his partner doesn’t want to have children or take care of them. He dreams of a peaceful and sunny island with a shit ton of kids… the man WANTS to have a family with his beloved partner one day. He might already ask a prospective partner early on in their friendship if they dream of having a family one day. If they don’t, then he’ll still be their friend, but he won’t pursue them as a romantic partner anymore. On the topic of children, while biological children are the golden standard, I think he’s a man who’s also willing to adopt kids, especially those who are orphaned at a young age. I can totally see him gently coaxing his partner to the idea of having many kids…he’s a good negotiator, and his partner will surely warm up to the idea as well! Children are a secret joy for the pirate.
He loves anything water-related — I can see him feeling most at home and safest when he’s surrounded by water. And you can count on the fact that most of your dates will involve water somehow. Whether asking you to compete with him on who can hold their breath the longest (he wins obviously, but he loves seeing your reactions) or languidly floating around the water, he loves spending time with his beloved on his turf. If you didn’t know how to swim, then you’re in luck! You’ve found the perfect teacher.
If you didn’t feel like swimming on that day, he’d probably prepare some food that you guys can share and invite you to sit out with him by the riverside for a picnic! Maybe he’d dip his feet in the water to cool himself, and he’d most likely ask you to do the same.
When it comes to intimacy, I can see him being fixated on brushing the hair of his beloved. He has smooth, long hair of his own despite it being a bit of a disadvantage in the water, he probably has a thing for good hair health and maintenance! He’s also probably the type to make sure to take care of his hair with what products he uses and his brushing habits, of course he’ll do the same with you! Expect him to ask if you’re okay with him brushing your hair. You’ll be surprised at how gentle he is with each stroke, and blush when he kisses your hair and scalp as he softly murmurs his affections for you.
He’s very romantic, I feel! He’s a man that gives his all in the things he does — whether it’s crime, his dream, or his beloved. He’s the type to spoil you with gifts. He knows that you’d hate it if he gives something that used to belong to his victims (not to mention, it’s not romantic at all), so he probably trades some of those belongings at a pawnshop for spending money. Then, he’ll give you gifts — he likes sentimental gifts the best, things that reminded him of you or vice versa.
Prefers to have a partner that can defend themself. The world is a dangerous place and while he’s sure to protect them when bad shit arrives, he’s not omnipotent. If his partner doesn’t know how to do basic self-defense, he would probably teach them what he knows. He feels safer that his future (represented by the gold and his partner) would be in safer hands.
I think before he meets Sugimoto's group, he insists that you stay behind in your village while he goes from Ainu village to village in search of the gold dust (chapter 233). He goes around, yet he always eventually returns to you after every excursion (and steamboat raid, to be honest).
But when he does meet Sugimoto and company, he'd tell you about it back at your home and give you the choice of whether or not you'd like to come with him on the last leg of his journey or not. He feels like something big will happen this time. And while he knows that staying home is the safest option for you...he wants to offer you a place beside him in making your dreams as a couple come true.

Japan Travelogue 2019 #11
Good day BI-ers. Mau share mengenai perjalanan saya ke Jepang selama 15 hari mulai dari tanggal 31 Januari 2019-16 Februari 2019. Ini ketiga kalinya saya ke Jepang. Oia post saya buat mungkin ga terlalu kronologis. Warning: long post ahead.
PART 11: Hari Kesepuluh, Minggu 10 Februari 2019
Saya memesan menu Grilled Seafood and Vegetables with Sweet Miso Sauce. Menurut saya sih rasanya tidak seperti grill/panggang tetapi seperti dikukus/rebus. Tetapi menu ini rasanya cukup enak.
85. Setelah itu saya kembali ke Sapporo dengan menaiki airport rapid. Tadi pagi saya menaiki kereta lokal dan memakan waktu sekitar 1 jam, sedangkan dengan kereta rapid memakan waktu sekitar 30 menit.
-Shiroishi - Sapporo pp 500 yen
-Sapporo - Otaru pp 1.280 yen
Akumulasi JR 168.460 yen, non-JR 3.280 yen
Pengeluaran hari ini:
-Grilled Seafood and Vegetables with Sweet Miso Sauce 1.280 yen + nasi small 160 yen
-Tour bus Lake Shikotsu 4.100 yen
-Lake Shikotsu 300 yen
