Day 2 - Packed to the gills with PERFECT!
July 16, 2023
What a day we have had! If I were ranking today on a 10 point scale, I would give it a 25!! Groceries were delivered in the time slot given (shocking!) and everything else fell into place, as planned - a much better day than yesterday.
Today was Sagan's oral report on James Smithson and we all learned so much. It was a firm A+++++
Tumblr media
If you want to see the entire report it is here:
After a round of appreciative applause, we began preparations for our "lunch on the run" with sandwiches from Panera ( our next door neighbor.) Then we headed by Metro to Planet Word. Temps were in the low 70s with an intermittent spitting of rain but although we had our umbrellas, we didn't need them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Planet Word is a GREAT museum celebrating... wait for it... WORDS: the history of language, the joy of reading and the power of writing. The exhibits are very well done and highly engaging - even the elevator is fun.
Tumblr media
Yes - this IS the elevator!!!
The word wall is informative, interactive and brilliantly done.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a short time exploring the general exhibits we headed into Lexicon Lane. Lexicon Lane is a combination escape room and puzzle hunt, designed to resemble an old village with the choice of 26 unique puzzle “cases” for visitors to solve. We picked our "case" and had 1.5 hours to solve the clues and save the world from disaster.
Tumblr media
It was a blast to watch these minds in action.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clues were everywhere, hidden in plain sight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Needless to say, the world is in great hands!! They did indeed save the world but it took most of our time.
Tumblr media
(True confession - LaVerne and I tried a different box last year and our time expired and we did NOT save the world nor get to ring the bell.)
Tumblr media
I have worried and fretted and made a plan to try an beat the 90+ degree heat during our trip, but I failed to make a plan for visiting a place where the air conditioning was set to winter! I asked to have the temperature changed - and the "host" who was wearing a heavy sweatshirt, relayed my request but nothing changed. We were uncomfortably cold - but they solved it anyway. BRRRRRRRR.
We did NOT see even 1/2 of al this place had to offer, partly because once we entered an exhibit no one wanted to leave. The reading table was an amazing experience. Pick a book, open it and suddenly your book was surrounded by "extras." It was brilliant - but who wanted to leave this place?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This room, lined with books and a mirrored ceiling giving the illusion that book cases continued to the sky, also housed magic mirrors. Open the drawer, read the line and the mirror revealed the scene from the line you just read.
Tumblr media
I LOVED that many of these books the kids had read AND way too many of these amazing booked have been banned - somewhere - but not in some back woods fascist country - but right here in the USA. The banned books were identified as such. This blatant stupidity irritates me to no end. How can we better understand you and the life you live that is different from my life if we can't walk a mile in your shoes? Sigh... I'm so proud of these kids who recognize exactly that!
We could have spent a couple more hours there - but we had a schedule to maintain so we headed out for a picnic in Franklin Park. Again we had light sprinkles but we found a table with an umbrella in this beautiful urban park and ate our lunch while we discussed Planet Word. The kids were just glowing from the experience and my heart was full.
Tumblr media
After lunch we Uber-ed to Georgetown and the Washington Harbor to have a short cruise on the Potomac River. We really enjoyed our driver as he talked about all the things he notices that give him info that we may not even notice. For example in the city, if there are street lights, the speed limit is 25 mph: No street lights, 35 mph. He had lots of information and was very entertaining. He, a 20 year cabdriver from NYC, was proud to tell us that his kids had come to DC to attend college and after graduation had opted to stay . 10 years ago he and had wife had moved here too
The rain was gone and we enjoyed the cruise in sunshine and gentle breezes. It was great to see so many of the places we will be visiting from a different perspective. Below is Katelyn and the Kennedy Center where we will stand on the balcony overlooking the Potomac River, Thursday night.
Tumblr media
The Kennedy Center is right next door to Watergate - FYI - so we were able to talk about that too and how the law SHOULD apply to everyone, even the rich, famous and powerful. EVERYONE!!
The photo below is THE water gate that gave the building its name - FYI. A water gate is a man-made waterway that prevents flooding an/or regulates the depth of another man-made water way, in this case the C&O canal. The Chesapeake & Ohio  Canal stretches 184.5 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland, MD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The heat inched up and the sun grew hotter and we opted for a break after the cruise so we Uber-ed back to our condo. Next up was a trip to the Smithsonian American Arts Museum and dinner in China Town. We all enjoyed our little rest and with the museum being open until 7:00 PM we had plenty of time. We did some prep for tomorrow and the kids wrote a postcard about their adventures. At 4:45 we headed out again by Metro.
The kids could get ANYWHERE in the city by Metro. We are giving them the destination and then they plot the course. We popped up right beside our destination and headed to the Presidential Gallery. We had a grand time, talking about what we knew about this guy and that guy. Which guy we wouldn't recognized and some of the great things different guys had accomplished. You see I'm using the word "GUY" because everyone of the US Presidents has been/still is male. I certainly HOPE that Katelyn and Sagan will live to see a female in that role. I hope I can too - but tick, tick, tick for me.
We had to wait patiently to get this pic - while there was NO line for pictures of the guy behind Obama.
Tumblr media
Katelyn was quick to stand beside one of her heroines too. (Mine too - FYI)
Tumblr media
I was very proud of our kids as they pointed out protraits of Marian Anderson, John Lewis, the Tuskegee Airmen and many other African Americans who have made the country great.
We closed the place down and then headed to China Town where the kids got a look at the seamy side of life. In China Town we walked by MANY groups of people using drugs. Marijuana, crack and I'm not sure what else - but they were all stoned, dirty and simply propped up against a wall. It wasn't a great scene, but it gave me a good opportunity to talk about it. Katelyn was appalled by the fact that there were two policemen standing just a few feet away - but they were. Anyway educational opportunities abound and while this was not listed as an objective for this trip - here it was.
We continued on to this little hole-in-the wall place and had some of the best food ever!! Well - Daphne didn't really love her food - but 3 out 4 thought it was fabulous food.
Tumblr media
On the way home we had a hilarious thing happen when while heading to the Metro - Sagan said, "Why are the back of my pants wet?" Then we saw the water pouring out of his bag - POURING! We stopped and he opened his bag, took out the almost empty water bottle and handed me his umbrella that was FULL of water. It holds a LOT of water!!! Then he poured his bag out - which caused all of us to start laughing and laughing and laughing. He is pouring the water out of his bag - I'm standing with a dripping umbrella and we are falling apart. We just couldn't stop laughing which has its own issues. Anyway - we gave the kids the key to the room and when we got to the street - they raced ahead. We were all still laughing like hyenas.
After we got settled, with the wettest umbrella in the world set up to dry and the bag turned inside, we settled in to watch Part 1 of Apollo 13. It is a great movie but very worrisome...
Tumblr media
Will they survive? We will find out on Monday..
Stay tuned...

Asmaul Husna Eps. 3
Al Mateen yang berarti The Firm, The Steadfast. Yuk kita mulai pembahasannya!
Tumblr media
Berdasarkan wikipedia erector spinae adalah:
The erector spinae (/ɪˈrɛktər ˈspaɪni/irr-EK-tər SPY-nee)[1] or spinal erectors is a set of muscles that straighten and rotate the back. The spinal erectors work together with the glutes (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus) to maintain stable posture standing or sitting.
QS Al A'raf (7): Sesungguhnya rencana-Ku sangat kokoh." Ayat sebelumnya mengatakan "…We will gradually draw them to destruction in ways they cannot comprehend." dan ayat tersebut diawali "As for those who deny Our signs,…" atau memberikan penekanan kepada orang orang yang menolak ayat Allah SWT (menggunakan kata ayat).
Sesungguhnya rencana-Ku sangat kokoh." Beberapa catatan: Sama halnya dengan Al-Araf ayat sebelumnya mengatakan "…We will gradually draw them to destruction in ways they cannot comprehend." Tapi ayatnya diawali dengan "So leave to Me ˹O Prophet˺ those who reject this message…"

Do It For The Plot
Tumblr media
I learn a lot from my kids these days.
They keep me current on the latest music, culture, and social media trends. They also keep me up to speed on the latest slang, phrases, and other cool things to say so I won't embarrass them by calling something "rad," "wicked," or "gnarly."
It takes effort to be current, which is why so many of us more seasoned folk decide to chill instead and stay within our own comfortable lanes.
Every generation has its own lingo, imprinting its particular je ne sais quoi upon the cultural lexicon. I find it all fascinating.
The other day, a new friend who works with younger people taught me a new phrase I will use often.
She said one of them taught her the phrase "Do it for the plot."  I had no idea what it meant, so she explained it to me. I dug online to learn more, so I will share it with you, dear readers.  Sharing is caring.
When you “do it for the plot,” you’re viewing yourself as the main character in your life and then doing the right thing to move “the plot” forward, no matter what might happen.
The phrase gained substantial traction on TikTok and other social media platforms. Many videos of people engaging in daring or scary activities “for the plot” have gone viral, inspiring users to boldly venture into uncharted and risky territories they otherwise may not have done.
I can't tell you how much I love this. There are so many ways to employ it.
About to try what seems to be the spiciest curry you've ever smelled?
Do it for the plot.
Your friend invites you to sky-diving to face your fear of heights.
Do it for the plot.
You get the idea.  But I think there are other ways to use this remarkable phrase to help move our "plot" forward, especially if we're stuck.
You may be tentative about leaving your job for another one.  There's a risk there, but it could be fantastic.
Do it for the plot.
There's a chance for a relationship with someone new after you've been alone for a long time and are afraid to try for fear of being hurt.
Do it for the plot.
You don't know how to find your purpose in life, and you wonder if you should trust God with your unknown future or simply stay put in the comfort of the known.
Do it for the plot.
You see, inherent in the meaning of doing things "for the plot" is a fundamental trust that the Universe (God) is kind and full of grace, mistakes are perfectly okay, and if you risk nothing, nothing is ever gained.
We have no clue what comes next in our lives.
We can spend them shrinking back from challenges, uncertainty, or risk, or we can step forward and move the story of our lives into the uncharted territory of trusting that God is good and that there are purposes before us we can't fathom at the moment.
May you find the courage in your life to do the next right thing to move your story forward, trusting that no matter what, there is love, grace, hope, and peace ahead of you in a future where God is waiting for you to arrive.
May it be so, and may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you now and always. Amen.

Certainly! Let’s envision a Scrabble/Monopoly hybrid board game that combines the word-building fun of Scrabble with the property-buying excitement of Monopoly. Here’s how it might work:
Board Design:
The game board is a rectangular grid like a Scrabble board, divided into squares.
Each square represents a property or location.
Tile Placement:
Players take turns placing letter tiles (like in Scrabble) on the squares.
The goal is to create words horizontally and vertically, just like in Scrabble.
Each word formed earns the player points based on the letters used.
Property Acquisition:
Instead of Monopoly properties, players acquire word-themed locations.
For example:
“Vocabulary Avenue”: A prime location for word enthusiasts.
“Syntax Street”: Where grammar rules apply.
“Lexicon Lane”: A high-value property.
“Verb Valley”: A strategic spot for action words.
Word Value:
The value of a word depends on the letters used (similar to Scrabble).
Longer, more complex words earn higher points.
Players can negotiate trades or buy/sell properties.
Chance Cards:
Instead of Monopoly’s Chance cards, we have “Etymology Cards”.
These cards provide word-related challenges or opportunities.
Examples:
“Use a word with Greek origins in your next word.”
“Swap a property with another player.”
Word Auctions:
When a player lands on an unowned property, there’s a word auction.
Players bid with points earned from forming words.
The highest bidder acquires the property.
Word Power-Ups:
Certain squares grant special abilities:
“Triple Word Score”: Boosts the value of a word.
“Double Letter Score”: Enhances a specific letter’s points.
“Wildcard Square”: Allows players to use any letter.
Winning Conditions:
The game ends when all properties are owned or after a set number of rounds.
The player with the highest total points (from words and properties) wins.
Remember, in this delightful fusion of wordplay and real estate, you’ll need both vocabulary and strategy to succeed!

Best MIDI Keyboards
In the grand cosmic orchestra where the stars hum and the universe vibrates with unseen melodies, the MIDI keyboard emerges as the celestial conductor. This device, a harbinger of harmony, was conceived not in the mundane workshops of mere mortals but in the ethereal forge where dreams meld with reality. Here, amid the nebulae where ideas orbit possibilities, the MIDI protocol was whispered into existence, an incantation to bridge worlds.
The MIDI keyboard, then, is more than an artifact; it is a compass navigating the vast expanse of the musical cosmos. Each key is a star, each knob a planet in its own right, each slider a comet streaking across the firmament of creativity. With this cosmic map, music producers set sail into the void, charting courses through the melodies that breathe life into the silence of space.
Among these celestial voyagers, legends are forged—keyboards that have ascended to myth. The ‘Novation SL MkIII’, known among the constellations as the Harmonizer of Worlds, its power to unify digital and analog realms celebrated in songs sung on distant planets. The ‘Arturia KeyLab MkII’ stands as the Sentinel of Sound, its robust frame and sensitive touch guarding the gates to musical transcendence.
Then, darting through the astral lanes, the ‘Akai Professional MPK Mini Mk3’, the Comet of Creation, beloved by nomadic souls for whom music is as boundless as the universe itself. This steadfast explorer ensures that no burst of inspiration dissipates into the vacuum, capturing the ephemeral and making it eternal.
In this celestial narrative, the MIDI keyboard transcends the earthly bounds of technology, becoming a vessel for the soul's journey through the infinite. It is the alchemist's wand that transforms the silence of the void into the lexicon of the universe, a lexicon written in the language of music. Thus, in the hands of those who dare to dream, the MIDI keyboard is not just an instrument but a gateway to the infinite, a connective thread in the cosmic tapestry that unites all creation in a symphony of sound.

In discussing the importance of location scouting, Hancock noted that “noise, too, is a tremendous factor… the absence thereof.” The house was a perfectly quiet set for more dialogue-heavy scenes, and its interiors were visually compatible with a farmhouse exterior that was, in reality, located three miles away in Old Saybrook.
Large, old Victorian houses have been woven into the American horror lexicon as inherently spooky in everything from “The Addams Family” and 1986’s House to Hitchcock’s Psycho. “That scary house exterior was a real find,” Hancock said. “I’d hate to see the movie without it.”
The Victorian-style “old Bishop House,” with its distinctive tower, is one of the more consistently striking visuals in the film, mostly framed in long shots against an overcast sky at dusk or bathed in a dreary fog. Originally built in the 19th century, it still stands to the present day. “Given the period houses, beautiful foliage, and picturesque country lanes, the Old Saybrook area is ideal for filmmaking, especially the horror genre,” Badalato added.

Video 📹 where Caitríona mentioned Geena Davis during the ATX TV Festival Outlander panel
Tumblr media
By Chris Colin
Published May 25, 2023
Updated May 28, 2023
“Transforming Spaces” is a series about women driving change in sometimes unexpected places.
Geena Davis and her family were returning from dinner in their small Massachusetts town when her great-uncle Jack, 99, began drifting into the oncoming lane of traffic. Ms. Davis was about 8, flanked by her parents in the back seat. Politeness suffused the car, the family, maybe the era, and nobody remarked on what was happening, even when another car appeared in the distance, speeding toward them.
Finally, moments before impact, Ms. Davis’s grandmother issued a gentle suggestion from the passenger seat: “A little to the right, Jack.” They missed by inches.
Ms. Davis, 67, relayed this story in her 2022 memoir, “Dying of Politeness,” an encapsulation of the genially stultifying values that she had absorbed as a child — and that a great many other girls absorb, too: Defer. Go along to get along. Everything’s fine.
Of course the Academy Award-winning actress ditched that pliability long ago. From “Thelma & Louise” and “A League of Their Own” to this year’s coming-of-age drama, “Fairyland,” back-seat docility just wasn’t an option. Indeed, self-possession was her thing. (Or one of her things. Few profiles have failed to mention her Mensa membership, her fluency in Swedish or her Olympic-caliber archery prowess.) But cultivating her own audaciousness was only Phase 1.
Next year will mark two decades since the creation of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. When her daughter was a toddler, Ms. Davis couldn’t help noticing that male characters vastly outnumbered female characters in children’s TV and movies.
“I knew everything is completely imbalanced in the world,” she said recently. But this was the realm of make-believe; why shouldn’t it be 50/50?
It wasn’t just the numbers. How the women were represented, their aspirations, the way young girls were sexualized: Across children’s programming, Ms. Davis saw a bewilderingly warped vision of reality being beamed into impressionable minds. Long before “diversity, equity and inclusion” would enter the lexicon, she began mentioning this gender schism whenever she had an industry meeting.
“Everyone said, ‘No, no, no — it used to be like that, but it’s been fixed,’” she said. “I started to wonder, What if I got the data to prove that I’m right about this?”
Amid Hollywood’s trumpeted causes, Ms. Davis made it her mission to quietly harvest data. Exactly how bad is that schism? In what other ways does it play out? Beyond gender, who else is being marginalized? In lieu of speechifying and ribbons, and with sponsors ranging from Google to Hulu, Ms. Davis’s team of researchers began producing receipts.
Ms. Davis wasnt the first to highlight disparities in popular entertainment. But by leveraging her reputation and resources — and by blasting technology at the problem — she made a hazy truth concrete and offered offenders a discreet path toward redemption. (While the institute first focused on gender data, its analyses now extend to race/ethnicity, L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+, disability, age 50-plus and body type. Random awful finding: Overweight characters are more than twice as likely to be violent.)

Even when braced for it, the institute’s findings are staggering: In the 101 top-grossing G-rated films from 1990 to 2005, just 28 percent of speaking characters were female. Even in crowd scenes — even in animated crowd scenes — male characters vastly outnumber female ones. In the 56 top grossing films of 2018, women portrayed in positions of leadership were four times more likely than men to be shown naked. (The bodies of 15 percent of them were filmed in slow motion.) Where a century ago women had been fully central to the budding film industry, they were now a quantifiable, if sexy, afterthought.
“When she started to collect the data, it was kind of incredible,” said Hillary Hallett, a professor of American studies at Columbia University and the author of “Go West, Young Women! The Rise of Early Hollywood.” “This wasn’t a vague feeling anymore. You couldn’t claim this was just some feminist rant. It was like, ‘Look at these numbers.’”
Ms. Davis is by turns reserved and goofy offscreen — a thoughtful responder, an unbridled guffawer. (At one point she enunciated the word “acting” so theatrically that she feared it would be hard to spell in this article.) On a recent afternoon in Los Angeles, she took a break from illustrating the children’s book she had written, “The Girl Who Was Too Big for the Page.”
“I grew up very self-conscious about being the tallest kid — not just the tallest girl — in my class,” she said. “I had this childhood-long wish to take up less space in the world.”
In time she began to look beyond her height — six feet — to the insidious messages reinforcing such insecurity.
“Hollywood creates our cultural narrative — its biases trickle down to the rest of the world,” she said in “This Changes Everything,” the 2018 documentary she produced about gender inequity in the film industry. The documentary takes its name from the incessant refrain she kept hearing after the success of “Thelma & Louise,” and later “A League of Their Own.” Finally the power and profitability of female-centric movies had been proven — this changes everything! And then, year after year, nothing.
Tumblr media

It was here that Ms. Davis planted her stake in the ground — a contention around why certain injustices persist, and how best to combat them. Where movements like #MeToo and Times Up target deliberate acts of monstrosity, hers would be the squishier universe of unconscious bias. Did you unthinkingly cast that doctor as a male? Hire that straight white director because he shares your background? Thought you were diversifying your film, only to reinforce old stereotypes? (Fiery Latina, anyone?)
It’s a dogged optimism that powers Ms. Davis’s activism — a faith that Hollywood can reform voluntarily. When she goes to a meeting now, she’s armed with her team’s latest research, and with conviction that improvement will follow.
“Our theory of change relies on the content creators to do good,” said Madeline Di Nonno, the president and the chief executive of the institute. “As Geena says, we never shame and blame. You have to pick your lane, and ours has always been, ‘We collaborate with you and want you to do better.’”
If a car full of polite Davises can awaken to oncoming danger, perhaps filmmakers can come to see the harm they’re perpetuating.
“Everyone isn’t out there necessarily trying to screw women or screw Black people,” said Franklin Leonard, a film and television producer and founder of the Black List, a popular platform for screenplays that have not been produced. “But the choices they make definitely have that consequence, regardless of what they believe about their intent.”
He added: “It’s not something people are necessarily aware of. And there’s no paper trail — it can only be revealed in aggregate. Which gets to the value of Geena’s work.”
Tumblr media
“Hollywood creates our cultural narrative— its biases trickle down to the rest of the world,” Ms Davis said in This Changes Everything, the 2018 documentary she produced about gender inequity in the film industry. Magdalena Wosinska for The New York Times
Unique to the institute’s efforts is its partnership with the University of Southern California’s Signal Analysis and Interpretation Laboratory, which uses software and machine learning to analyze scripts and other media. One tool born of that collaboration, Spellcheck for Bias, employs AI to scan scripts for stereotypes and other problematic choices. (Janine Jones-Clark, the executive vice president for inclusion for NBCUniversal’s global talent development and inclusion team, recalled a scene in a television show in which a person of color seemed to be acting in a threatening manner toward another character. Once flagged by the software, the scene was reshot.)
Still, progress has been mixed. In 2019 and 2020, the institute reported that gender parity for female lead characters had been achieved in the 100 highest-grossing family films and in the top Nielsen-rated children’s television shows. Nearly 70 percent of industry executives familiar with the institute’s research made changes to at least two projects.
But women represented just 18 percent of directors working on the top 250 films of 2022, up only 1 percent from 2021, according to the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film; the percentage of major Asian and Asian American female characters fell from 10 percent in 2021 to under 7 percent in 2022. A 2021 McKinsey report showed that 92 percent of film executives were white — less diverse than Donald Trump’s cabinet at the time, as Mr. Leonard of the Black List noted.
“I think the industry is more resistant to change than anybody realizes,” he added. “So I’m incredibly appreciative of anyone — and especially someone with Geena’s background — doing the non-glamorous stuff of trying to change it, being in the trenches with Excel spreadsheets.”
Ms. Davis has not quit her day job. (Coming soon: a role in “Pussy Island,” a thriller from Zoe Kravitz in her directorial debut.) But acting shares a billing with her books, the diversity-focused Bentonville Film Festival she started in Arkansas in 2015 — even the roller coasters she rides for equity. (Yes, Thelma is now Disney’s gender consultant for its theme parks and resorts.)
“We’re definitely heading in the right direction,” she said. “Bill Gates called himself an impatient optimist, and that feels pretty good for what I am.”
A correction was made on May 26, 2023: An earlier version of this article misspelled the surname of the president and chief executive of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. She is Madeline Di Nonno, not Di Donno. The error was repeated in a photo caption.
A correction was made on May 28, 2023: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the number of Academy Awards Ms. Davis received. She won one Oscar for her supporting performance in “The Accidental Tourist,” and was nominated for a second Academy Award for “Thelma & Louise.”
How we handle corrections

Asmaul Husna Eps.2
Al-Nafi' yang berarti The Propitious, the Benefactor. Mari kita refleksikan.
Yunus 49, Al-Fath 11, Al-A'raf 188 7. Ayat peringatan bermanfaat hanya bagi sebagian orang Al-A'la 9, 'Abasa 4, Adz-Dzariyat 55, Hud 34 8. Keimanan bermanfaat jika sebelum terlambat. Yunus 98 - Kaum Nabi Yunus beriman sebelum Adzab datang 9. Keimanan tidak bermanfaat jika terlambat As-Sajda 29 - terlambat di hari akhir Al-An'am 158 - terlambat jika Malaikat turun Ghafir 85 - terlambat jika sudah melihat adzab 10. Satu-satunya yang bermanfaat di akhirat? Shidiq.
