Back at it again, with probably my favorite Precure Fanseries out of them all! I present to you the girlies of:

Let's Go Live Precure

Themes: Adventure, Earth, Ecology, Universe, Technology, Mystery, Vlog, Film, Life experiences and friendship.

Cure Nature / Kirika is the leader of Let's Go Live Precure (yess she's green ^_^)

Cure Astral / Claire is the purple galaxy themed cure.

Cure Hydro / Saori is the blue themed ocean cure representing everything that lives in a body of water.

Im really excited to share, draw and dwelve further into this series once I've posted all of my fancure designs which will be soon hopefully. Only 3 left to go now, Till next time!

I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE your works. I'm still not through all of your Ao3 fics yet, and I've gotten terribly bad at commenting on them, but please just know how MUCH I read and love and enjoy all the different twists and ideas you have for a silly cartoon with aliens and robot lions. The characters are always superb, and I love how you write them so very real and still the story and plot and character development and relationships feel so tight, and you are an amazing writer <3<3<3

My only worry would be if stsg wanted you back and I know she’s intuitive enough to know they do without saying anything. Would she refuse? Protect you? Or would she just let them have you?

yall underestimate shoko too much. theres a reason shes friends with those two.

much like satosugu, shoko is just as obsessed with you, but she's a bit more dignified with it, and wont make it so obvious. Yeah she's crazy for you, but unlike satosugu, she won't stalk you, disrespect your boundaries or constantly lovebomb you.

When you're finally safe in her arms, and those two idiots are still pining after you, she's not gonna roll over. She'll tell them to back off, she'll be civil, for a time. But these men are stubborn. She's known that her entire life. Only death will make them give up on their obsession.

She has friends in dark places. It's no real issue to precure something oderless, tasteless, deadly. Administering it is the real issue, but once the hard part is over, she doesn't have to cover up the bodies. It's supposed to look like a tragic accident.

i fully believe that in a no curses au, Shoko would be the most dangerous out of the trio. shes a doctor. she's taken an oath 'do no harm', but she's more than willing to bend the rules for you.

The Precure System's Follower PokéChallenge

This is Hanadera Nodoka, PokéMMO edition:

PokéMMO Hanadera Nodoka, who will from now on be abbreviated as PHN, has just moved to the Johto region and found herself with a rulebook of how to live life and complete challenges there. She's been left a different set of rules for different game segments, and this will detail how that goes.

This challenge involves friends giving me specific rulesets to make the game harder, so I asked some friends and some followers to help me out - some of these segments are left blank, so if you want to throw your hat into the ring and take up a section, let me know what section you want and what rules you have for me.

From Johto Arrival Until Beating Falkner - By Yami Bakura of @cosmosiscollective

I was tasked by Yami Bakura to Fight Falkner without utilizing the flying type's natural weakness, and that I wasn't allowed to catch Pokémon that could do that kind of supereffective damage until I beat Falkner. To stick with the spirit, but make the challenge a little harder, I interpreted this to work in a slightly more challenging way. The rules of this segment are now as follows:

I am not allowed to catch any Pokémon of types that would be supereffective against the Flying type (Rock, Electric, Ice, etc.)

I am not allowed to catch any Pokémon of types that would RESIST the Flying type, even if their other typing would be weak to it (So no flying types, even if the other type is grass or bug - Hoppip and Butterfree are BANNED)

Pokémon I catch MUST be of types that are weak to the Flying type (Fighting, Bug, Grass)

I am not allowed to use moves that would be supereffective to the Flying type, but neutral and not very effective moves are permitted.

I was tasked by Frosted Flakes to use Bellsprout on my team, though I'm allowed to keep Pokémon from the previous segment. While I can keep those Pokémon from the previous segment on my team, it is MANDATORY I use Bellsprout until beating Bugsy. I have to use Bellsprout to beat Bugsy, and if Bellsprout faints, I need to restart the Bugsy fight. I've changed the rules here slightly too, to make it more interesting. They are now as follows:

I must use Bellsprout on my team for this section. No boxing him.

While the Pokémon from the previous segment are permitted to be on my team, they CANNOT be used in the Bugsy fight itself. Bellsprout has to Solo the gym.

If Bellsprout faints at ANY point during this segment, I must also go back and catch a new Bellsprout to use, to honor the Bellsprout Tower monks.

I was tasked by Lue to a VERY difficult ruleset for this segment... One full of milk, udders, and breeding.

I must obtain a Miltank. I may use however I wish, but I am not allowed to remove said Miltank from my party until I have beaten Morty.

The ONLY manner in which I am allowed to heal a Pokémon's HP is MooMoo Milk. If I wish to heal their PP at a Pokémon Center, their HP MUST be full first.

Outside of Trainer Battles, the ONLY area I am allowed to Level Grind at is the Pokéathlon Dome

I MUST obtain a Payday Meowth and bring it to Morty's Gym. This WILL require breeding, as the Meowth in PokéMMO's Johto are too high level to know this move.

Unless the previous segments have made obtaining Bill's Eevee legitimately impossible, I MUST bring a Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon to Morty's gym.

You may be wondering why PHN is dressed in all black rather than my signature color of pink. That's Sinister's doing, given this rule segment. For this segment, I have to dress up as a Team Rocket member, and roleplay Team Rocket. There's a lot of things this could mean, but I'm going to be interpreting it as being a Team Rocket Grunt for this segment, and turn it into a ruleset properly. The rules are as follows:

I must be dressed as a Team Rocket Grunt at ALL TIMES until beating the Champion

I must ONLY use Pokémon that Team Rocket grunts can be found using in Heartgold Soulsilver (These are the Drowzee line, Zubat line, Rattata line, Oddish line, Grimer line, Ekans line, Koffing line, and Venonat line)*

*UNLESS that Pokémon's Trainer ID is not mine - These will count as Stolen Rocket Pokémon, opening up encounters with the Spearow in Ilex Forest and the Shuckle in Cianwood City

Most grunts aren't too friendly to their Pokémon, Jesse and James being an exception, so Anything I Catch Myself must have a Friendship Value of LESS than 150 to be useable. This can be determined at the friendship checker.

As you can see, followers! This run will be difficult for us!

I watched the new Precure All Stars F and it unironically slaps (and I have the insert song on such an unhealthy loop that I know it will show up in my Spotify Wrapped) so more Hermitgals Precure brainstorming ^_^

I feel like I mentioned this before but False is now rich. She isn't just the "cool responsible student council leader blue archer" trope, she's now also from a rich family. ("But this is just like Spopera-" "Yeah shhh I like that premise and it's convenient ^_^") Like, she lives in a mansion but she hides her upbringing so people don't think she's snobby.

The main reason why the plot needs a character with money is because of the dire housing situation. Three fairies with human forms. A redeemed villain. Where is everyone gonna live? Obviously, ojou-san False solves this with a snap of her fingers.

Cleo in my mind is also like... recovering from Joe's minor character death. So after their defeat and their transformation tool breaking, they move out and go to a new town for a fresh start. (Cleo is kind of based on Mami from Madoka Magica) And she lived in like a small apartment until she met the gang and False was like "yeah house time".

I think Cleo, Gem, Pearl, Iskall, and Ren end up living together? In a big house? Like the Nutts House in Yes 5? It becomes the base of their operations. Actually it'll be kinda funny if the big hermit house is in like the Symmetry mansion's backyard. A bunch of people leaving the Symmetry mansion to go to school every day. Rip Stress for living with her family in the arts and crafts store they own.

Speaking of human Ren, I want him to work in the school cafeteria like Syrup from Yes 5. He's the king of the Hermit Kingdom and wants to mingle with the "peasants" to widen his horizons or something. False gets him a job because she's the student council president and nepotism. Waiter Ren is like "everyone can get in line for me :D XD" and everyone is like "omggggggg he's so hot 😍". False excuses all the weird things Ren does by saying he's her penpal from a foreign country.

Gem and Pearl both deal heavily with the burden of being the Chosen One. Gem is a fairy who was granted a human / cure form because of the wishes of the Hermit Kingdom and she knows she's carrying the hopes and dreams of her entire kingdom. Meanwhile, Pearl was brainwashed by the evil Corporation to do their bidding because her inherent creativity and talent was so powerful that it was a threat. So Pearl knows she has the power to topple the Corporation. And it becomes a very real point of solidarity between the newcomers Gem and Pearl because the other three cures are normie humans. They're also like, non-humans, so they struggle to adapt to the human world together and go to school together. But they don't want to bother their other friends so they try to deal with it together 🥺🥺🥺

Gem is under so much pressure!! She's like the OP mid season addition to the team! Gem knows she has to Geminislay but what if she isn't as strong as everyone hoped? What if she lets everyone down? What if it was a mistake for the kingdom to trust her??

I want Cleo and False to be the healer type characters :D because they're usually characterised as the mean, assertive, blunt people? But in this AU it makes sense for them to also be healers. Cleo's powers are inherently connected to life and death (she kinda raised Joe from the dead or something like that), and after facing their failure from a year ago, Cleo is determined to protect her allies and is high on the defence.

Meanwhile, while False excels at ranged combat, she also... just wants everyone to get along. Cleo defends to protect, False fights to protect. Also since False is the careful one, it makes sense for her to watch over for everyone. Plus she's the one saving the fairies from being kidnapped. Probably number one cause of harm to Ren and simultaneously Ren's number one saviour.

This is also to contrast against Stress who is absolutely NOT the healer type. Stress is brash, impulsive, loud, and rushes into combat with her bright pink fists. She smashes everything apart to prove her point. Stress is a monster. She's terrifying. And wears bright pink.

Thinking about evil Ren arc again. But the "evil" is from himself— his trauma of losing his father, his kingdom in ruins, and now his best friend Iskall is in a coma (yeah this happens). Ren has always tried his best to be optimistic because he's the only heir to the kingdom and he has to be strong for literally everyone, but he's also like the character trope who smiles to hide their pain. He's silly and goofy on purpose. But then when Iskall is out of commission, Ren loses it and starts spiralling (which is what usually happens when Ren loses one of his green people). His hair starts turning grey. Then his skin. And finally his eyes turn an unsettling green— the colour of the emeralds. Good King Ren has corrupted himself into Bad King Ren.

Ren also unleashes a beast form which is basically a big terrifying shadow wolf (kind of like the Wolf from the webtoon Four Leaf? It's a cute and colourful webtoon about magical girls based on the tale of the Red Riding Hood, it's ending soon so it's a great time to read it!). He's not evilised by the evil Corporation (unlike villain Pearl / possessed Stress) and he's still himself (unlike False's evil reflection). So they don't know how to to fight him / bring him back.

Gem, as a resident of the Hermit Kingdom, starts a "coup" against Bad Ren (like Soup Group-ish). She's like "I want the best for my kingdom, and unfortunately our king isn't in his right mind". The cures fight Ren and try to make him snap out of it.

Cleo knows what it feels like to lose a friend so she has a long conversation with Ren about grief and moving on

And False, the ruthless warrior False, decides not to fight. Because she remembers picking up a soggy sad pathetic Ren in the rain during their first meeting. Ren is still sad and pathetic to her. She can't bring herself to hurt him. It's as simple of that.

Everyone else: You're insane. You can't save him with the power of love.

False: Yeah but I don't wanna fight the shadow wolf. Like, this is Ren. And how much damage can Ren do? The guy who falls down when he tries to open a door? C'mon guys. It's alright. This is just an eldritch horror that we have never encountered and don't know how to purify. This is fine.

Shadow wolf Ren: 😡

False, stretching out a hand to pat shadow Ren: There, there. I'm not scared of you. You're just Ren. You're still Ren ^_^

Shadow wolf Ren: ...🥺?

(This is a metaphor about False embracing all sides of Ren, not just his silly charming likeable side, but his insecurities and grief and pain. Because while Ren puts on a strong face for everyone, False met him at his lowest point and he can't hide that from her.)

Once Ren is purified, he feels deeply guilty about hurting his friends (and not having done anything productive to heal Iskall) and everyone goes awwww it's fine Ren we love you still <3 (even if you're kind of useless and annoying)

Ren, sad and sniffling: I am STEPPING DOWN as heir and Lady Cleo can take the Tiny Crown of the Dog—

And they all shut him up before he does anything worse. Gem is like "yeah we wanted to defeat your evil form but we didn't want you to ABDICATE-"

I was thinking about Vash and Knives meeting the reader who is from another world, is a magical girl like miraculous, sailor moon,Magic Madoka, The owl house or Sakura Cardcaptor's

Where the reader fell into that deserted world and doesn't know what to do, but when he goes to a city he lives helping people, she can create small portions of water, she can make some plants appear in the middle of the desert.

Vash:

He knows you when he sees you playing with the children in a snow fight, and you managed to create a small portion of snow to play with, leaving the place very refreshed

Knives:

He is going to get another plant, one of his sisters, and ends up destroying everything, and you with a magical girl who values ​​justice try to comfort him.

The giggles of the children as they are throwing and playing in the snow, you can't help but smile at them since you came to this town, helping the people with growing plants and making potions for them, and now using your sown potions to have a little fun and feel refreshed in the dying heat of no man's land.

You smiled as you watched the children play in the fresh powder that was being created into snowballs. Vash, come and play with us please," a boy yelled at a blonde man named Vash in a crimson jacket and yellow glasses, scratching the back of his head with his metal arm in shock before smiling "sure." He smiled yay! and the boy's face beamed excitedly with a big smile.

The boy looked at you and said, "Then, Miss (Name), could you play with us as well, please?" "Yeah, Miss (Name), please play with us too!" the other kids yelled. You felt warmth from the boy's bright eyes, happiness in your chest as the child asked you, joy in seeing their happy expressions, and the way they looked up at you with an excited filled face. "I would love to," you said and gave a small smile to the children.

Before you and Vash got hit in the face with balls of snow by the children, which made you both laugh out loud, you looked over at Vash, who laughed along with you before all of the children teamed up and started to throw way more snow balls at you, making you both run away before Vash face planted on the snow covered ground.

"Mr. Vash!" you stopped to see if he was alright, going down on your knee and asking, "Are you alright?" You get cut off by many snowballs thrown at you and Vash. "We got them,"  they shouted happily, jumping high, "I'm fine,"  Vash called out, trying to get himself up and get the snow off his body.

You helped him up and brushed the snow off him, "Miss (Name) and Vash, Sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!" one of the children shouted loudly, causing you to turn quickly to the sound of the kids laughing.

Vash looked at you with a small smile, "I'm sorry if they made you uncomfortable, there kids and they don't know any better." You shook and turned to look back at him as a sympathetic smile formed on your lips, "It's fine, there kids." He nodded.

"How about round two, Miss (Name), Vash? We will beat you again for sure!" Another one said with confidence, "Yes, let's go." You smiled, "What about you, Mr. Vash?" and added, "Sure, miss (Name), but just call me Vash." He was smiling at you.

"Vash you call me (Name)!"

You hear harsh but sad notes being played on the piano; it's oblivious. Knives was the one playing it, and by listening to him, you can tell he wasn't in the best of moods today. It would be foolish for anyone to go near him when he's in a terrible mood, and you might just be one, slowly walking towards where the music was coming.

The way Knives played, no matter what song he played, it always sounded beautiful to you. Finding the sight of him playing, he already knew you were there; he didn't stop playing. You tried to be quiet to not disturb him too much. You walk over and stand beside the piano, waiting for him to finish.

Once finished, his eyes went straight to you; his eyes looked like daggers, and if it were anyone else, they would drop to their knees in fear; his eyes were filled with pure hate, but his face was blank as always: "Nai." You softly spoke his name, "Why are you here?" He scoffed, I'm worried about you; you've been in such a bad mood; did something happen?" You asked, "I don't need you pitying me." He snarled.

"I'm not pitying you, Nai; I care about you." You insisted, and knives hand reaches out to grab your collar, pulling you closer to his face and looking you straight in the eyes, but you didn't waver against him. "I'm here because I care about you," you repeated, and he released your collar, his hands falling to his sides, before moving over a bit slowly and telling you to sit down next to him.

It was a bit shocking that he did that in the mood he was in. You thought he was going to tell you to go back and leave him be. "What are you waiting for? Move before I change my mind," he threatened. You quickly moved, taking your place sitting next to him. You're both silent. "Those humans... they killed my sister," Knives said in a dark tone, breaking the silence.

You listen to him, his voice getting angrier and angrier before you take his hands and intertwine them with yours to comfort him without using words. You felt his hands tighten around your own even without showing it. He's glad to have you by his side; even if his words are cruel, you never give up on him, and he can't deny himself any more of your care any longer; he yearns for it.

Soaring Sky Precure and All Stars F Thoughts

The end of January is always a bittersweet time to be a Precure fan as the currently airing series comes to a close and the next series begins the following week at the first of February. I have been watching Precure on a weekly basis for 6 years ever since Hugtto in 2018 and I watched the entire backlog of episodes over roughly 2 years. I wanted to write a post about why All Stars F and Soaring Sky Precure were the perfect anniversary projects. The staple of any Precure milestone year is a new All Stars movie. They used to be yearly until there were simply too many characters to sustain the purpose of the format so now its saved for special occasions. I'll start by saying All Stars F was phenomenal! The action has never looked better and unlike Memories, it was almost completely in 2D. It's hard to miss when they distill the franchise into its purest form of magical girls beating monsters. The main point I want to focus on is the film's antagonist Cure Supreme.

(note the fake logo, Supreme is merely going through the motions) They are an unworldly existence who completely destroyed all the cures. Kind of like an end of series boss character. Yet on a whim Supreme wanted to learn more about where a Precure's strength comes from such as why did they try so hard. Supreme recreated earth, gave themselves a mascot, a ton of monsters to defeat including a boss figure, all to essentially live as the main character of a Precure series. It's a very cynical way of looking at the franchise with its repeatable formula. She sees all the parts as simply something they have. In the climax of the film Supreme is faced with Precure being more than the sum of its parts. They see the hardships, trials, moments of happiness, and the moments of sadness that have occurred in the history of the franchise. A Precure is someone who puts their best foot forward and looks to make a better tomorrow regardless of any obstacles. By splitting part of their power into a mascot and trying to imitate being a cure, Supreme has already taken the first step of their redemption story. In the end, All Stars F uses Supreme to show the audience why Precure is such a long lasting franchise. It might be a repeatable formula, it might appear silly, but ultimately what defines a Precure is someone giving it all their to improve themselves. That is something that can resonate and inspires an audience of all ages which even Supreme is not immune from. The film concludes with Supreme and they're mascot Puka realizing that perhaps together there is more to life when they share experiences.

(Manatsu grinning with happiness as her first encounter with Laura replays before their eyes. You can feel how proud she is of having a friend like Laura. It completely changed the trajectory of her life for the better) If All Stars F is a refresher of Precure's overarching themes, then Soaring Sky Precure is a throwback to the duo dynamic of the early days with a theme of Heroes. We have the central duo of Sora and Mashiro. Sora is an outsider and the team lead. She befriends Mashiro, the human character, who is a kind person who doesn't always have the best self confidence. Together they teach other how to exert themselves more. Both Mashiro and Sora come to learn how acts of kindness come in many forms. Similarly, Tsubasa (first male cure, aspiring knight) and Ageha (adult, nursery school teacher) form a secondary duo. They're mostly stuck in supporting roles for most of the series, but both show anyone can embody the qualities of a Precure in their life. Super heroes don't always wear fleshly capes after all. Elle is a somewhat of a throwback to Luminous as a supernatural entity in the group. She's mostly the insert character for Precure's young target demographic. By becoming Cure Noble it adds to the idea of people in supporting roles being heroes in their own right. Even if they are fallen nobility. Precure's don't let their past define them. This brings us to the main antagonist Kaiserin. If Sora finds positivity from those around her, then Kaiserin is her foil as someone who has a pure heart but became tainted by negative surrounding circumstances. Kaiserin had been told over and over that strength is everything. These ideals were forced upon her through fabricated events. At the climax with Kaiserin wavering, the dark power went into Sky because surely a hero with strong convictions would desire the ultimate power at all costs to save a friend. But turns out Sora's bond with Mashiro is even stronger than that. Power for powers sake can only go so far and Mashiro never stopped believing in Sora. They both push each other to new heights that senseless strength could never obtain. Kasarin sees this and rejects the power. Giving in to those desires has only stunted her ability to cultivate relationships. She can now get a second chance with her loyal followers now seeking to redeem themselves as well.

The franchise began as "Futari wa Precure" (We are Precure) for a reason. It's about how people can connect and push each other. Whether its someone from another world and a human on earth, an alien being destructive powers, or.... a dog and her pet owner? Sometimes the larger group dynamic and gimmick is more important in modern precures, but going back to those roots from Futari wa Precure every once in awhile is a good reminder of how it runs through every installment to this day. Tldr - I'm thinking way to hard about a children's television series whose main goal is selling toys. We're lucky it consistently has such strong character writing. I really like when the lead can shout their dream at every turn and grows to embody that ideal. We got spoiled by having a full 50 episode series this year. The power of 4 cour is amazing. Late night anime could only dream of having that much time.

Otona Precure '23: The Sequel We ACTUALLY Deserve

Let's not mince words.

Otona Precure wasn't just fantastic, it puts every reboot or sequel of an established series to shame.

Because yea, it's primarily aimed at an older audience alright but the issues and the themes discussed in the story are relatable and relevant to everyone's interests, regardless of age.

That reality is much harsher than we think it is, more than we can comprehend. That the world will never be perfect like we want it to be.

But also that, because we're on this planet right now at this very moment, we can't just sit around and resign ourselves to not do anything as situations continue to worsen.

Pollution, climate change, toxic society, war.

The show did not shy away from addressing these topics but what's even more notable is it pointing out that people, humans, are the source of them all.

And I appreciate the honesty of that statement because yes, frankly, we are the problem.

People are selfish. We indulge too much in ourselves, our own egos, that we are blinded to the welfare of others. We are also lazy and discriminating and even those who say we'd like things to be better often give up too easily because searching for a solution is too hard and daunting.

Mankind is the shittiest species to walk upon this earth and no one's gonna argue on that.

But does that make everyone inherently bad though?

No, of course not.

We're flawed beings but we're also capable of learning. We're capable of understanding and compassion. There are many among us who do try our best to make this world a kinder and more beautiful place to live in.

But as the finale shows, it cannot only be these few people (like Precure) to do all the hauling and pushing. Everybody has to pitch in. Everybody has to contribute for a better world to be possible.

And that doesn't mean tackling a conflict that's a lot bigger than you can handle. That doesn't mean you have to go at it all alone.

It means that you have to change the way you are, change the way you do things to get the ball rolling. Only by changing yourself first that you can begin to change your surroundings, not the other way around.

It's only through the collective effort of everyone wanting to change for the better that we can protect what we love and create the future that we envision.

Precure is meant to inspire that will to act which is best exemplified in Nozomi. Cure Dream, the Precure of Hope.

Nozomi stands out among the many lead Cures we've had over the years in the quality of leadership she displays as the head of her own team.

She is not the brightest nor sharpest person in any group but damn, does that girl woman never give up.

Not even when she pushes herself to the brink that she falls unconscious from fatigue several times did she ever consider the thought of giving up.

And that's exactly what makes her such a strong and effective leader.

It's not because she's been put into that position so she's only functioning as one.

It's because she inspires everyone around her to become the leaders of their own lives which would then repeatedly bring about the butterfly effect in people beyond their own circle.

Additionally, we must applaud at how well the themes of adulthood and personal struggle have been explored. Look at the girls! Look at how much they've grown, how much they've progressed from the time they were still just middle schoolers dreaming of what they want to be in the future.

(GODDAMNIT, MILK BECAME THE PRIME MINISTER OF HER HOME COUNTRY, I'M STILL NOT OVER THAT AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!)

They've accomplished so much and you can't help but be incredibly proud of how far they've come on their individual journeys.

But now that they're adults, they also realize just how difficult it is to keep the optimism they had when they were kids. Things don't always go the way you want them to. Real life is stressful and exhausting and the accumulation of all those negative feelings of helplessness is enough to send anyone into depression.

As an adult, you're constantly asking yourself "is it really worth it?" because you don't want to betray the hopes you had as a child but sometimes, it's just too hard that all you want to do is give up.

...and that's okay if you need to for a while.

Take a break, go talk to someone you can trust if you feel you've really hit rock bottom.

Find a secure, safe space to cry it all out if you have to.

It's okay to not be okay all the time.

Because that's pretty much what adulthood is.

Being an adult is not about doing everything but knowing you can't do everything and telling yourself that's okay. Because you're already doing everything you can. Your best is good enough.

It's good enough for one person. Nobody's asking you to save the world or become a magical girl to fight off monsters or resolve a major crisis with a miracle answer.

You just need to do your part of the whole in the best way you can. That's all.

And I believe Bell knows that as well.

She knows that just because today's worst was averted, it doesn't mean we're out of the doom radar yet. Because she's right. Humans still can't be trusted as proven by that after-credits scene. There are still plenty of jerks out there who don't give a damn about how much harm they're adding to the world.

But she also knows that as long as there is someone like Precure to do their part, to yell at those jerks to pick up their trash, then maybe, maybe, not all hope is lost just yet.

And so she leaves with the words "I'll be waiting for you in the future", hoping that what the Cures have taught her to believe won't betray her when that time comes.

That said, for us longtime fans of the series, Otona Precure is also a love letter.

A project of appreciation to us for the past 20 years of love and support we've given this franchise.

And I'd say we got what we wanted because before the announcement of this spin-off, I didn't think Toei would ever care to redeem Yes! 5 Precure on how badly it performed during its two seasons run.

Yet here we are and even 100 times better than the original.

They cut out all the fillers which was the primary flaw of those two seasons and focused entirely on the characters. The girls and the expansion of their story arcs. The stuff we actually want to see.

Moreover, the writers did a very great job of showing how everyone has matured. For example, Rin and Karen outgrew their bickering and even the uncalled for vitriol that Kurumi always directed at Nozomi is nowhere to be found.

Seriously! I laughed so hard when Kurumi switched the target of her criticism from Nozomi to Coco. I don't think we've ever seen her this concerned and sympathetic towards Nozomi to the point that she didn't even hesitate to yell at her superior to "cut it with your responsibilities crap and go comfort your lonely girlfriend, you idiot king!"

Everyone is just incredibly supportive of each other and that's so heartwarming.

I also personally loved how they dealt with Komachi's episode, which introduced a sort of sub-theme of one's love for their hometown.

Komachi has always aspired to become a writer and it would've been fine to go down the route of getting her out of her slump.

But having Komachi put in effort for her community, learn about the history of her town, and becoming determined to defend it after her strengthened appreciation fit with the overarching theme and her personality so much better.

The inclusion of Splash Star into this story was awesome, too.

If I can be honest, I don't think Saki and Mai would've done as well as Otona Precure if they had 12 episodes only to themselves (including Michiru and Kaoru, btw). So by giving them a fair amount of screentime next to the Yes!5 girls, the show just felt more complete with their conclusions.

They're still chasing their respective dreams, had their relationship troubles (and Saki got engaged to her boyfriend/fiance who seems like a very good guy judging by how he's supportive of her going to Luxembourg, ugh so happy for her!) and career doubts but are still as close as ever which allowed them to pull through in the end.

Wonderful.

Finally, let's all agree that no anniversary season is complete unless proper spotlight is given to the dai-senpai Precure, FutariWa.

Maybe that's why 10th anniversary was such a dud?

They didn't get as much screentime as they did during the 15th anniversary (which included two episodes in Hugtto and sharing the main lead role with Hana/Cure Yell in the All Stars movie) but they still made a grand entrance in the penultimate ep of Otona Precure and kicked absolute ass in the finale and that's really all that matters.

So good job, Toei!

And ok, finally finally, NozoCoco officially got 💖MARRIED💖

Romance is not a vital aspect of Precure nor does it ever have to be because focusing on friendship and teamwork is still the most important aspect when it comes to this series...

But only a stupid numbskull would say Coco is unnecessary to Nozomi's happiness because he's the biggest reason she was able to become who she is today. The fact that she even tells him, right after she woke up from her coma, that she needs him to truly be happy is a proof of how irreplaceable he is to her.

She doesn't ask him to be with her because she needs a man. She wants him to marry her because he brings out the best in her. Because he is the one person who can understand her better than anyone else can and the one person whom she wants to share the rest of her life with.

Remember that Nozomi was inspired by Coco. She became Precure, became Cure Dream, because she met him. She aspired to become a teacher because of him. The butterfly effect for her began with him.

For them to overcome all these obstacles to their relationship and promise to be there for one another, through all the good and bad...it's the fulfillment of a dream they both deserve.

And the perfect ending to Yes! 5 Precure.

So congratulations to Yes!5 and Splash Star on an amazing sequel.

Congratulations to Precure for these precious 20 years you've given us.

Here's hoping to more successful years ahead.

Precure Bonus Day

2008 marked the fifth anniversary of Precure, as in the fifth season since 2004’s Futari wa Precure. I’m not sure of everything Toei did to celebrate, outside of a pair of song compilation albums and possibly some merch. But one thing they DID do was to release a short film before the fall movie. It was the first ever on-screen crossover between the different teams, and serves as a precursor for the crossover movies that ran from 2009 to 2020. So just as this short preceded the Go Go movie, I’m going to  precede my Go Go review with this! Let’s dig in.

The Plot

It starts with the title card over a bright blue sky, with a chorus of the 11 cures reading the title aloud.

The camera pans down to show a stadium and then we see Saki, Mai, and all their friends from Splash Star running up to the entrance. Saki drags Mai along by the hand past Akane and Hikari’s Tako Cafe, where we then see Nagisa, Honoka, and Hikari, and their friends from FW/MH in line. (as well as Masuko Mika from Y5)

Inside we see Nozomi running down a hallway past lots of people, leading along Rin, Urara, Komachi, Karen, and Kurumi, telling them to hurry up. None of them notice an ominous shadow following them.

Nozomi’s group emerges into the arena of the stadium, which is oddly empty, and are confused. Nagisa’s group as well as Saki and Mai emerge through adjacent entrances, all looking over at each other and the otherwise vacant stadium in confusion. Notably, none of the non-heroine characters make it inside.

Suddenly a deep voice calls out “PRECURE” and they see a huge giant black figure in the middle of the arena. It casts 4 shadows, with the three behind it revealing the face of a Zakenna, an Uzaina, and a Kowaina. It moves to punch the ground, threateningly, so everyone foregoes their secret identities and transforms into Precure.

There’s a brief moment of surprise as the three teams realize there are other Precures besides themselves, but they don’t have time to dwell on it as the Shadow Giant punches at them.

Bloom and Egret jump in to block the attack with a spirit barrier. Everyone else regains their composure, and the barrier shatters. Black and White leap through the air in an iconic scene from their opening, while the Precure 5 run along the ground. Black and White block a giant punch, then Bloom & Egret use a spirit attack on his chest. The PC5 team rapidly scatters. Lemonade wraps the Shadow Giant in her Prism Chain, followed by Aqua, Mint, and Rouge using their respective attacks.

Bloom and Egret fly high into the air and transform into Bright and Windy. Windy launches a gust of wind that catches Bloom, who adds her light to it as they charge rapidly down on the monster. Dream charges along the ground with her fists glowing, while Black and White rebound off some girders and leap straight at the Giant.

Everyone's attacks converge on the Shadow: the Wind and Light attack, Black and White’s double punch, and Shooting Star. A huge explosion of light is seen from the exterior of the stadium. The smoke clears as everyone regroups, but the monster is unharmed and blows everyone away in a huge gust of wind.

Cure Dream stands up amid the rubble. Black, Bright, and Dream explain in turn that they'll listen if the Shadow has anything to say, but there's lots of people there today who came to see the show and they won't let him ruin the event.

The Shadow spews an energy beam from his mouth at them in response, but Shiny Luminous and Milky Rose have blocked it with a barrier. The teams perform Marble Screw Max, Spiral Star Splash, and Rainbow Rose Explosion together, and the Shadow disintegrates.

The girls find themselves back in their civilian forms, standing on a stage in the middle of the arena. The Max Heart theme starts to play and the crowd cheers. The girls realize THEY are the performance. Nagisa doesn't want to dance, but Nozomi encourages her, and she joins in.

All the girls dance and sing along to a medley of the opening themes. The dance alternates between spotlighting each team, having all 11 girls dance together, and having just Nagisa, Saki, and Nozomi in focus. The sequence is interspersed with still images of everyone eating and having fun together while the credits roll. At the end, they all stand together in the shape of a heart, looking up at the camera, while “The End” is written in the middle.

The Analysis

What I Liked

Because this short is only 5 minutes from start to finish, it’s extremely fast-paced. The characters are introduced rapidly and they’re face to face with the monster in 45 seconds, and kicking butt by the 2 minute mark.

The fight scene does a good job showcasing the difference in fighting styles between the three teams. Max Heart are all about raw strength, punching and kicking, jumping off of things to get more leverage. Splash Star make use of the spirits to fly around and deflect attacks or emphasize them. Precure 5 use their individual attacks. Luminous and Rose don’t do much of anything, which is out of character for Kurumi, but it's going to be a theme in this double feature.

The dance at the end is fun! It’s also the only time All Stars will have a 2D animated dance ending, and the last 2D animated Precure dance ending in general. It is ALSO one of the last times that the dance ending will feature the characters in civilian outfits rather than their cure forms, with the only other instance after this that I recall being in Heartcatch’s first ending.

There is a really cool shot when the GoGo team is dancing that starts far out from the audience’s POV, zooms all the way in on Nozomi’s face, spins around her, and then zooms back out to show them dancing from behind, looking out at the audience. There’s another great shot where the camera pans down the line of cures as they all come together for the big finale shot.

Pretty much every named character from the last 5 seasons makes a cameo appearance in the crowds or the audience. This includes the villains.

No, I am not listing out every single character here.

The individual outfits the girls are wearing are really nice. They’re more intricate, fancier clothes than their usual civilian attire, which suggests the show they expected to go see was somewhat upscale.

What I Didn’t Like

Milky Rose and Shiny Luminous just disappeared during the fight. After the barrier shatters they’re nowhere to be seen until after the big explosion of light when the smoke clears. Then the only thing they do is put up another barrier. Rose is capable of fighting, and Luminous has support abilities that would help the team, so it’s strange they didn’t take a few seconds to showcase either of these two.

Even on a movie (or short film) budget, some of the art quality is lacking.

Miscellaneous

As I pointed out in another post, for some reason the Blu Ray cut of the film is about 11 seconds shorter than the DVD cut, and presumably the theatrical version. The main cut is the shot of the giant’s shadows with the faces of the Precures’ past enemies in them, but lots of scenes throughout the film have a few frames cut off of them. I am unclear on the reason for this.

The establishing overhead shot of the stadium shows it surrounded by countryside, not many buildings around. Not where you usually expect a stadium to be.

For the sake of brevity, the Yes 5 team didn’t get to call out their Cure names in the roll call.

Between their transformation scene and Shadow Giant’s first attack, the cures somehow teleport onto the field of the stadium. Whether it was a continuity error or just convenience for animation, I don’t know.

Bloom and Egret are able to switch into their Bright and Windy forms instantly, without detransforming. In the series, these were completely separate transformations, but it’s understandable that the writers would do it here to keep the momentum of the scene. Also it looks awesome.

No fairies appear in the film other than one still image in the credits. Kurumi is never shown transforming into Milk, but she is present as Milk in the scene with all the fairies, and then also present as Kurumi when the human characters are shown. She lives a busy double life.

The villain is not named in the dialogue, but the credits call him “Kage no Kyojin”, or Shadow Giant, which is what I am also calling him.

Since this film is basically a teaser for the feature length Precure All Stars DX film, several of the action sequences end up being reused in that movie. I will do a side-by-side comparison when I get to that. Also, the design of the Shadow Giant is the same as the final form of that movie’s villain, Fusion. It’s unclear if they are meant to be the same character or not. Shadow Giant is certainly a fusion of the three enemy types, but Fusion in the DX movie is also shown to have Hoshiina powers not seen here, and is voiced by a different actor.

Unfortunately the voice actor for the Shadow Giant, Yanada Kiyoyuki, passed away in November of 2022 at age 57.

Conclusion

It’s a short, sweet, action packed special. It knows what it’s about and it doesn’t waste a second getting to the point. You want all the Precues teaming up and fighting a giant enemy? You got all the Precures teaming up and fighting a giant enemy! In its short runtime, it of course manages to pack in everything you want from Precure: pretty outfits, dynamic fights, and speeches about the value of friendship and community. It even ends with a dance! It’s a great showcase of how the series has evolved in its (at the time) short life, and what being a Precure means to its different teams. You can clearly see how each group’s approach to combat is different, and they all bounce off of each other excellently. And even though it’s short, it manages to throw in a ton of cameos for long time fans. As a teaser for the upcoming All Stars movie, it does a great job at whetting the audience’s appetite. And as a lead-in to the main event, the Go Go movie, it also gets the audience suitably pumped for a roaring good time.

Synopsis: You’ve been having a hard time staying organized. So, you decide to go to Shamour for help.

A/N ~ This wasn’t requested, but I really wanted to write for Shamour lol. Also, I used Google translate for the French words, so forgive me if any of it’s incorrect!

Your shoes clacked quickly and loudly as you ran through the hallway. You knew that was against the rules, but there was no way you’d make it to class on time if you walked. You struggled to see ahead of you because of the large stack of papers you were carrying, adding to the risk.

You’re a teacher at Noble Academy. It’s been your dream job for a long time, so you’re over the moon to be able to teach here. You love your job, and all your students. And to your delight, the students seem to love you too.

But a few weeks ago, something happened that added a unique chapter to your life.

You became what’s called a “Pretty Cure”. From what you’ve learned, you transform into a princess, and fight monsters, which are born from people’s dreams being locked away. There’s a lot more to the story, but it’s been difficult to memorize. But luckily, your teammates, which also happen to be your students, have been a big help to you.

Unfortunately though, becoming a Pretty Cure has caused you to become less organized. And trying to get work done with no organization causes you to work a lot slower. So you’ve recently been late on a lot of things

Your limited vision caused you to fail to see a slightly raised floorboard, and trip. You fell to the ground with a loud thud, and your papers went flying.

“Shoot! Now I’m definitely gonna be late!” You panicked, trying to pick up the papers as fast as possible.

“Miss (last name)! Are you okay?” A voice said from behind you. Turning your head, you saw that it was your student and teammate, Haruno Haruka.

“Hello, Haruka. Yes, I’m okay. I just tripped.” You assured her.

Haruka nealed next to you, and started picking up papers. “Here, let me help you!”

“Oh that’s okay. I’d rather me be late than you.”

“Oh no, I insist! A good princess always helps whenever she can!”

You smiled, and thanked her. Haruka was such a sweet girl, and she was so dedicated to her dream of becoming a princess.

(Time Skip to the End of the Day)

The dismissal bell had just rang, and you said goodbye to your students. You flopped onto your chair, and let out a big, tired sigh. You and Haruka had just barely made it to class that morning, and that wasn’t even the most tiring part of the day.

“Woah. You look pretty beat.”

You jumped, not expecting a student to still be there. You opened your eyes, and saw your fellow Pretty Cures, Kirara, Minami, Haruka and Towa.

“Oh, hi girls. I thought you’d left.” You said.

“We stayed to check up on you.” Said Minami. “We’ve noticed that you’ve been having trouble staying on top of things ever since becoming a Pretty Cure, and that it’s messing with your schedule. Haruka told us what happened this morning, and we thought that you might need help.”

The other girls nodded in agreement.

“You girls are pretty observant. Yes, I am having trouble. But it’s mostly my fault. I’m afraid I let myself get disorganized.” You said, rubbing your temples.

Suddenly, Aroma, a bird-like fairy from the Hope Kingdom, flew in from the open window. “Well, this may just help with that-roma!” He said. In his feet, he carried the Lesson Pad.

You felt your heart start to race in excitement. Not just because the Lesson Pad would help you, but because there was a certain teacher what lives in it that you’re very fond of. Miss Shamour.

Your relationship with her was quite different than everyone else’s. You two often found yourselves flirting during and in between lessons. It’s safe to say that you have feelings for her, and you have a feeling she does too.

Aroma placed the pad on your desk. Knowing what to do, you picked up the stylus, and used it to summon Miss Shamour.

She appeared out of the Lesson Pad, and hopped off your desk, and onto the floor.

“Bonjour everyone.” She greeted, flipping one of pigtails. “What is it that you need teaching today?”

“I uh, need help getting organized. Ever since becoming a Pretty Cure, I’m behind on a lot of things.” You responded.

“Oh, non non non!” Shamour tutted, lightly smacking her paw-shaped wand in her hand. “That just won’t do! But not to worry! I, Miss Shamour, will help you get back on track! Lesson start!” And with that, you and Miss Shamour were sucked into the Lesson Pad.

Your vision focused, and you found yourself sitting in a desk. Miss Shamour was standing in front of you.

“Okay, first part of the lesson. You need to create un horaire, a schedule!” She waved her wand, and a chalkboard appeared out of seemingly nowhere, and some chalk along with it. She waved her wand again, and a piece of paper and a pencil spawned on your desk.

“One of the most important ways to stay organized as a teacher, is to organize your time!”

You mentally prepared yourself for the long road ahead. Miss Shamour was a strict teacher, but you very much enjoyed spending time with her. So you powered through the lesson.

After what seemed like hours, Miss Shamour’s lesson proved affective. You had a schedule, and your papers and files were in labeled folders and binders. You felt a heavy weight lift off your shoulders.

“Congratulations, Miss (name). You’ve passed the lesson!”

You gave yourself a little cheer, almost causing you to drop all your folders. Miss Shamour pinched the bridge of her nose in slight disappointment, though she clearly found it amusing, as she was smiling.

“Oh my. Just what am I going to do with you?”

You laughed. “Well, if you wouldn’t mind, maybe you could give me another lesson sometime?”

She locked eyes with you, her tail swishing in curiosity. “Oui? And what might the topic of that lesson be”

“Oh, I dunno… maybe… how to ask a cool, cute, fellow teacher out on a date?” You asked shyly.

Shamour chuckled, clearly flattered by your date proposal. “Oui. Though that lesson may best be carried out in your world. How does Sunday sound to you, Miss (name)?” She flirted back.

Overjoyed, you leaned into her side, a way of hugging her without using your arms. “That sounds tre magnifique!”

Nah but it's the way every time a story features or is about women or a woman's story, people always want to try to make it about men or say "what if there were men instead?"

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Six: the Musical both have parts of their fanbase(although thankfully in Six it's not the majority) saying that there should be a version with all men or going "what if this female main cast had a male main cast instead"? Even though the point of both is to provide representation for women, MLP is about how there's no wrong way to be a girl and changing the way girls'/girly shows are seen as shallow and less good, and giving girls multiple strong female characters to see themselves in instead of just one token/cookie cutter archetype, while Six is all about REAL-LIFE women whose lives were destroyed because of misogyny, it is all about girl power(same as mlp) and women getting to reclaim their stories from a patriarchal society that shortchanged and silenced their voices throughout history, but no let's make it about men lol.

The same is true for Sailor Moon, I have seen some people say that it's sexist or "misandrist"(as if that's even a thing lol) because it's all about women and the women are more powerful and how Tuxedo Mask "always needs to be saved" like goddamn let the girls be the heroes who save the world for once.

And for that matter PRECURE. Unpopular opinion that will surely get my head bitten off by fans but I don't think Precure NEEDS male Cures and it's not "erasing" feminine boys or saying boys can't be feminine or "reinforcing gender roles" to point that out. Precure is a franchise about female characters being the heroes and main characters who are powerful while also being feminine, it's supposed to place the women center stage and give them the spotlight when most media doesn't do that, trying to fit boys in it is just ruining that message imo. Tbh I would be happy if there were no male Cures at all, idgaf about your "but let boys be feminine" shit cuz I mean yeah but like go watch Cute High Earth Defense Club Love or something, that show seems more your speed(@ sexist Precure fans who say this, not you). I once got my comments removed TWICE for trying to point this out to someone, to the point where I just blocked them lol. One person even went so far as to make a petition for Toei Animation to make an all-male Precure season, again, just go watch Cute High, bc clearly that's what you're looking for.

I also saw some people complaining about Project MC^2 being "sexist" against boys and making them out to be stupid just because it's about girls being smart spies and good at math/art/science, one review even said "teach girls that boys matter too!" oh rly like they don't know already??? Like the world doesn't already tell them that each and every single day??????? The second girls get the spotlight everybody acts like boys are being attacked, but when boys get the spotlight it's all crickets and shit bc boys are supposed to take center stage like no one cares about girls getting attention. Your seven-year-old son isn't going to enter a self-hating misandrist crisis because one wee show said "women do run the world!" we still live in a patriarchy ffs.

Also in Cardcaptor Sakura the main character is a girl and the story has many female characters and is very empowering to women in general(while also having a great deal of powerful men and even a canon m/m couple), and yet I still saw this one annoying guy write an entire screed about how Sakura sucks as a character and should never have been Cardcaptor, the cherry on top was them saying that Syaoran should be the Master of the Clow Cards instead...because it's not enough that this show has multiple representations of positive men/masculinity in addition to women/femininity, it's still not good enough if it's a girl power fantasy, it MUST make a boy the hero!

I also saw someone say that Touhou, which has an all-female cast, needs more men. Wonder if they'd say the reverse if it had an all-male cast(correct answer: they wouldn't).

And then there's the Encanto fandom's entire can of worms where they went through that phase of wanting the female-dominated cast to be all about Camilo and Bruno, sidelining the women in the process. Like bruh. 😕

I really do wish that people would stop this shit, female-centric media is really never allowed to exist without people wanting men to be prioritized in it and take away from the female representation even though men have enough representation already lol, people can't handle when not everything is about men. It's why I will never listen to or take anyone seriously when they complain about shows like these being "sexist against men" and say that anything I write is too female-centric. Like. GOOD. The world needs more female-centric casts to shake up the status quo! You guys love complaining about shows being gendered and wanting gender equality in fiction only towards female-centric works, because you don't want to see women playing central roles without men also being there. Sucks to be on the other side of the playing field now, huh?

Hirogaru Sky! Precure Episode 47 Review - The Two Princesses

In the midst of Wonderful Precure news, this week’s episode of Hirogaru Sky has brought about a lot of twists. I can tell the story is going to reach its end this month as so many things happened in this episode, I don’t even know where to begin.

Let’s start with Elleelain and Ellee. It’s finally confirmed that the Morning Star is Princess Elleelain/Cure Noble and that Ellee is essentially her child in a way—is this virgin birth? Elleelain is Precure Virgin Mary and Ellee is Precure Jesus confirmed. The way Elleelain finally decides to show herself to Ellee and give her the last of her powers was rather sad. There’s actually two on-screen deaths in this episode and Elleelain happens to be the first. That’s crazy. I’m also amazed that Elleelain managed to live until her elderly years before sealing her powers into the Majestic Chroniclon and then became the Morning Star until Ellee’s birth. I thought she died young for some reason… Anyways, what happened after Sora, Mashiro and Ellee got transported back is explained. While there was peace and Elleelain and the Empress had a good relationship, it all changed a few years later as the Underg Empire suddenly ghosted her. She created Ellee a year ago because she was worried that the Underg Empire might attack now that they have so much power.

Ellee is finally a teenager now. She is no longer a toddler. She only changes back into baby Ellee when she is hungry—this honestly makes no sense. If you want Ellee to grow up, then make her grow up! I guess the instability is due to Ellee not being able to control her power in her civilian state right now. It’s honestly weird to see Ellee talk like a normal person and not all baby-like now. I mean, she spent almost 95% of the show as a baby, so to spent the last 5% of the show as a teenager feels like wasted potential. Why couldn’t they do this earlier? Tsubasa and Ellee’s dynamic is going to be hilarious now that Tsubasa is now the shortest member—heck, she’s probably the tallest of the group as she looks a little bit taller than Ageha, the actual adult. Now that Ellee is now in her true state, that means Majesty finally gets a solo move after 15 episodes since Majesty’s debut. 15 episodes without a solo move… Majesty uses Noble’s Magic Hour’s End, if you wanted to know.

Skearhead DIES in this episode. What? HE DIES? That abruptly? WHAT? Sorry about the blubbering, but I didn’t expect that at all. Instead of transforming himself into a Kyoborg, he uses Ranborgs to distract the group and then as a last result, he traps Majesty and Sky into a last resort barrier as he blows himself up. The fact that he did this was super unexpected. I thought he was going to turn himself into a Kyoborg. His actions were all because he loved the Empress. He uses “ai” instead of “suki”, so this means that his feelings for her were deep, but was it romantic or familial? He was her tutor, but it did seem as if the current Empress cherished him a lot that losing him was the start of her break down and counterattack.

Knowing that Cure Noble betrayed the Underg Empire’s trust was quite a twist. It makes me wonder if it was a misunderstanding. Maybe they both saw it differently, that it caused friction between them? Noble didn’t mention the betrayal, while the Empress did. Hopefully, more will be explained next week. I do feel like this episode was a bit overshadowed because of the Wonderful Precure news. What are your thoughts on this episode?

As always, I use whatever version of the title I am most comfy writing. Also these aren't in any order other than sort of by release? I wrote down shows when I finished them so earlier in the year shows end up first. This is my science.

TomoChan is a Girl

This show is a fun little romcom that's about a violent girl and her childhood friend who she wants to go out with. The only problem is she's ridiculously tomboyish and violent and they've been friends so long, he legit just sees her as his bestie dude karate friend. This is the driving force for the show and expect Tomo to constantly knock Jun upside the head in response to his failing to see her romantic advances.

The show has an enjoyable cast of secondary characters besides the main ones with dour Misuzu always around to cut people down and active embodiment of chaos Carol who…well, girl is just a walking ditz meme. There's fun hidden depth there even with a show that sometimes has a problem with being a lil too horny. I liked it though, they were fun chars and thinking back on them as I write this up makes me remember them fondly.

Akiba Maid War

Akiba Maid War is one of those shows that is a spectacle over substance when you think about it. However, that spectacle is bonkers and was ridiculously fun to watch. A period piece about the fictional gang style wars of maid cafes in Akihabara, the show is a tale that's as comedic as it is violent. Newcomer Nagomi must learn the ways of maids and the high stakes battles between the maid hierarchy.

Like I said, it's a VERY silly show and ridiculously violent. Calling it a black comedy is pretty on the nose but it absolutely fits. I really don't want to say too much about it, but if you want to see maids murder each other in John Wick-esque violence then I say check it out. It even has some nice drama too amongst it all. Go do it, watch the pig maids!

Nijiyon Animation

Love Live Nijiyon I don't have too much to say on to be honest. It was more time with characters I liked and they had goofy little jokes. Wild this is getting a second season next year but hey why not?

Hirogaru Sky Precure

This is a year of firsts for Precure. The fact the first Precures were the blue and white ones, the introduction of an adult and boy Precures who aren't just side characters in one episode..lots of wild stuff. Hero girl Sora and her bestie Mashiro are such a good pair. Tsubasa is a fun nerd and Ageha rules in the tradition of "older Precure, will kick your ass." The villains have been mostly fun, if a little underwritten. Still, I liked Wario but a pig man and shithead dweeb.

The Precure this year has been pretty solid to be honest, and the official subs have gotten a LOT better in quality so things sound way less like it's being done by some poor intern down in Toei's dungeons. Good designs, good style, pretty much a good season to start with if you're curious. Also for a while we got to see older Precures at the end for the 20th anniversary so yay~

Yes Precure 5 Go Go

So we finished the second half of the Yes 5 series and it was…fine? I still don't really like Milk and even moreso Milky Rose. She's not my least fave cure but she's up there. Coco and Nuts are still bleh and new friend Syrup was ehhhh. Really the main thing I learned to love this year was Bunbee. It's an early season though so I suppose it was still growing pains. This one (like Max Heart) probably could've just been combined into the first series as one year long show and not TWO separate ones.

Dokidoki Precure

DokiDoki Precure is an interesting one because there is a lot there to like. It's got a fun cast, some dopey villains and a good energy to it all. There's also the ugliest Precure baby I can think of so there's that. I didn't initially like Cure Ace but she grew on me over time which is funny cuz meanwhile I was all in on Regina who is just a shithead goblin (complimentary).

Like I said, it's a nice little series and I enjoyed the character a lot. Mana is a good girl who loves all of her friends and anyone she can make friends with. I think my favorite is Alice though just because she's basically Batman in Precure form, even down to the hyper competent butler. I think going into this show I was thinking it was going to be one of the lesser ones, but I liked it more than I thought I would so that's a win in the end.

Power of Hope ~ Precure Full Bloom

I'm putting this on here to complete the Precure chat and I think ultimately I was disappointed by it more than happy. Maybe I was expecting something I was never going to get, who knows. The idea of grown up Precure characters having to do their adult ass lives is an interesting one and I really did like all the designs they came up with for the older characters. But the fact they all just transformed into their older, middle schooler designs, and even used the same old footage, was just kind of a bummer for me. Honestly, it felt like a movie that was stretched out over 3 months of TV and probably could've just been that. Maybe they'll do something different when they do the Mahou Tsukai grown ups next. Also Bunbee was here too so yay.

Urusei Yatsura

With friends in tow, finally actually watched some Urusei Yatsura, or rather the 2022 remake series. It's got a lot of what I feel would become the staple Rumiko Takahashi comedy violence in it and I can see why it helped her later works. This is one of those shows where I don't know much to say about because I feel people know what it's about but…oni lady from space comes to Earth, says she's a pervy dweeb's wife and shenanigans ensue from there. A goofy cast of characters that was just an overall silly time. More to come next year!

Mobile Suit Gundam the Witch from Mercury (S2)

Not too much to add to this one since I talked about how I liked it last year, but I like where it took the story. Showing Miorine having to deal with being in charge of her dad's company while he was out injured and showing how people dealt with past traumas that affected their present lives. I mean, it's probably basic Gundam stuff, but I enjoyed it. There were a lot of good dramatic moments and one particular episode that really hit hard on the heart strings.

The ending was great and, honestly, the only problem is we only got 2 cours worth and not a whole year long show. That being said, I hope we do get to see Suletta again and not just in Super Robot Wars games. Also, don't let anyone try to tell you they aren't married at the end. That's just denying the truth.

Inu-Oh

What a cool fucking movie. Cool fucking visuals, cool fucking soundtrack. Just everything about it was a good watch. Made me feel happy, sad..just yea. A tale of friendship between a blind biwa player and a cursed-deformed dancer, it's a really lovely story with like I said..it's just really good and you should check it out. Sorry I don't have better words for this. I think I just want you to discover it for yourselves!

Skip and Loafer

Skip and Loafer is a cute little slice of life with some romance elements in it with a cute cast of characters from all walks of life. Awkward over-acheiver Mitsumi tries to make her way in the big city high school where she becomes friends with others ranging from the overly chill, but complex, Sosuke to the seemingly aloof Yuzuki. It's a nice little story that treads some of the typical high school anime things but has a lot of hidden depth behind the characters.

Like I often seem to say, it's one of those ones I wish wasn't only 12 episodes and deserves more. It even has a nice bit of LGBTQ+ representation in it with Mitsumi's Aunt Nao. Seriously, fun little show, I want more.

Oshi no Ko

Oshi no Ko was initially one I wasn't going to check out because the synopsis for it made me very confused and I thought it was JUST too weird. Let there be no mistake, it's a fucking weird premise and sometimes it gets awkward because of that. That being said, I ended up very invested in the story because I really want to know the answer to the overarching mystery of the show. Who dun it huh? Who dun it?!

This show has a lot to say about the entertainment industry, specifically the shittiness of it and I think that's ultimately a good thing. Word of warning, episode 6 and 7 are REALLY heavy and the official subs even have a warning before and after the episodes because of it. Next year there's another season incoming so I will look forward to more Memcho in our future. Also, probably one of the more hype openings this year. Yoasobi is one of my new favorite artists and I enjoy when they do stuff (they also did a G Witch opening so!)

Yohane the Parhelion: Sunshine in the Mirror

A Love Live April Fools joke that became its own actual show. What a time to be alive. This is an interesting little piece though and had some nice things going for it. As always the music and visuals were good and I like the set up of it all. Plus, I'm always happy to see the Sunshine cast in things since they're the ones I've spent the most time with.

That being said, the show's plot leaves a lot to be desired since some episodes it feels like they forgot they were supposed to have one to be honest. Still though, if you like Love Live Sunshine, you'll probably enjoy this too. Some characters act a little different but I think that's fine since they're in a different setting. Go watch it if you wanna, I dunno!

Spy x Family (S3)

Spy x Family continues its fun times from last year and I'm glad to have more of it. They even did an episode on the "Yor Gets Shot in the Ass" chapter which is a really fun and silly one. Yea it was a good time for more spy times, lots of good action set pieces and silly little moments in between. It's like a hugely popular show, I don't know what all you want me to say on this. It's fun and good!

Birdie Wing Golf Girls' Story

We finished the golf! It went even more soap opera and weird! It even felt like they did a Happy GIlmore reference unintentionally! I loved this weird stupid show. I miss it.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

This was an interesting one to say the least, I'm not quite done with it yet but Science Saru plus Scott Pilgrim is a fun set up. It's a complete retelling of the show and honestly I'm for it. A lot more stuff with Ramona and in the Japanese dub, Kim is played by Cure Gelato so yea. If you liked the original series, this should be on your list to check out. And if you liked the movie, all the original actors reprise their roles so bonus points.

It's a cute silly little series about a dweeb ass elf. It was fun~

Akane Banashi

This is a manga I started reading a couple months back about a girl trying to become a pro Rakugo performer to avenge her father, but also to claim her own spot in the competitive world of this Japanese art. It's a fun thing that's played really over the top like a sports/battle manga. I enjoy it, you should cheek it out!

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

A series that's ostensibly an isekai but the main character does not seem to have any knowledge of her previous life. At least, outside of vague things like "I saw a witch flying on a broom in a dream that may have been memories of a past I don't remember?? so I'm going to fly on a broom." An interesting one that didn't take the coward's way out at the end either.

So I think this is all I have to say this year? It's not much but it's my little list~ I hope you all enjoyed it~

For next year, I'm looking forward to finishing up the last old Precure season, Happiness Charge. We've also started the original Doremi so that should be fun. We also started watching Freiren so I feel that'll probably be on next year's list so watch out for that. And Dungeon Meshi is very soon too! Hope you all had a good 2023 and let's hope next year is a good one. Or atleast a non painful one.

hermitgals precure update: geminitay backstory edition

it was so hard figuring out a mid season precure backstory, so in the end i defaulted to the milky rose route LMAO.

gem used to be a fairy living in the hermit kingdom, she stayed there after the fall. the citizens of the hermit kingdom grow nervous without their king and the genesis block, but since they have the power of cooperation and hope, they manage to keep things running. they still want to contact their lost king. so they decide to choose one among themselves to be a messenger and find ren in the human world. gem volunteers and everyone chooses her. they bless her with powers and she gains a human form.

meanwhile, the four cures + gang are struggling. since the genesis block occasionally grants them wishes by fixing (creating) certain items, such as repairing cleo's transformation tool and bringing pearl back to life, all of them decide to wish for a new cure. they summon their greatest strengths and hand them to the genesis block in the hopes the block can combine their strengths and form an ultra-powerful cure. the genesis block glows, everyone's hopeful, but then nothing happens. they sigh and dismiss it.

some time passes. human gem struggles to get used to the human world. her wits and willpower keep her going. knowing she has an entire kingdom depending on her, she hunts for ren and co.

the cures struggles even more and gets their asses beat. gem witnesses the fight. she finally sees king ren and iskall, and she also sees the precures fighting tooth and nail to protect the genesis block. she's very touched by outsiders fighting so hard for her kingdom. she's overcome with a strong will to fight alongside them, to fight to protect her kingdom, to fight as not to let down everyone back home because she's their sole messenger.

the genesis block hears her wish and grants her transformation. geminiSLAY. gem is canonically extra powerful because she's blessed with everyone from her hermit kingdom— she's carrying everyone's combined wishes. she completely wrecks the bad guys. everyone's staring at her in awe, and gem is suddenly embarrassed and drained. she doesn't know how to approach them, so she runs away. but at least she knows where the cures + fairies are.

meanwhile, the gang believes the genesis block has combined their strengths to form the new mysterious cure. they're eager to meet her. gem transfers into the cures' school and everyone's like :) ooh transfer student! that's nice— wait. ren and iskall also sense there's something weirdly familiar with this new girl (because she's a fairy like them).

they confront gem and she tells them everything. gem also learns the strength-combining thing they tried with the genesis block, and how everyone has high hopes for her because she's supposedly the perfect cure with no weaknesses. this stresses her out, but she doesn't let it show and she's just happy to find king ren.

gem struggles in the next fight, which comes as a surprise. gem admits she's just an ordinary girl who wants the best for her kingdom. her perceived strength doesn't belong to her, she just borrowed it from her people. she says she's sorry for disappointing the gang because she's not the perfect cure that came from the genesis block. she has her faults and weaknesses.

while the genesis block didn't exactly create gem, it gave her the power to unleash her strength and transform. she had enough willpower and bravery, she only needed a little push. so in the end, while gem is technically a chosen one, she's also just a brave girl venturing out into the wild unknown with so much on her shoulders. it's important to note that the genesis block didn't grant the four cures + fairies' wish for a perfect cure, it granted gem's wish specifically.

ren, iskall, and gem eventually establish a connection between themselves and the hermit kingdom, and they can exchange updates. the gang teaches gem about the ways of the human world <3 and that's the legend of the great gem. (she's also better at retaining her human form compared to ren, she rarely changes back to her fairy form)

Currently reading: Actually shamefully little. My main focus has been on Glass Mask, which has fully captivated me. But I've been trying to pace myself with it because it's so good that I almost don't want to burn through it all. Otherwise I just read all of Sensei wa Koi wo Oshierarenai the other day and started catching up with Cipher Academy, Mahou Shoujo Risuka, and Four Knights of the Apocalypse again since I was varying degrees of behind on all of them.

Currently watching: In terms of seasonals, with my friend I've been watching Dungeon Meshi, Majo to Yajuu, and Four Knights of the Apocalypse. And then on my own I also keep up with Sousou no Frieren, Urusei Yatsura Season 2, and I'll be starting Wonderful Precure! once the subs are out for it. As for older series I've been alternating around with watching: Yawara!, Kodomo no Omocha, Touch, Futari wa Precure, and rewatching Creamy Mami.

I also started rewatching Penguindrum with the same friend since we finished our Utena rewatch (and then we'll do Yuri Kuma and Sarazanmai subsequently.) And very importantly, soon I'll be watching Revue Starlight -LIVE #4- Climax with themt oo. Wondering maybe if the concerts are worth doing too ????

Currently obsessed with: Unsurprising answer (probably) but Utena has again been the #1 thing in the front of my brain since watching the musicals for the first time then rewatching the anime. The Mikage brainrot is especially back at dangerously terminal levels I'm afraid. But just in general I've really lost impulse control and have lately been building my Utena doujinshi and merch collection.

Outside of that, Revue Starlight still has me in a chokehold since I first finished it (and the Lives only are adding to it) and I've been getting back into my Monogatari era with Off & Monster Season announced. More largely back into just being utterly obsessed with all of Nisioisin's works.
