the peril of reading old scifi/fantasy is i’m left trying to navigate author websites that were clearly hand coded in html 20 years ago and haven’t been updated since when i just want a nice neat list of all their books that they somehow don’t seem to have 😭

the anon asking me about wallpapers yesterday reminds me of how lost phones got returned at the library I worked at in college.
basically, we’d give you the phone if you could describe the current lock screen /wallpaper without being suspicious. odds were, if you knew the wallpaper (or the last person who texted you, etc) it was probably your phone.
except. except. this was a college library at a large university. the wallpapers were absolutely insane, embarrassing things because their owners were coffee addicts and students blowing through all-nighters. they simply did not care.
and so returning phones always ended one of two ways: the person would just shrug and say “yeah it’s a pic of me with my dad fishing” and we’d give it back.
or the person would look away, blush, and then say something like “it’s a picture of princess peach getting railed by mario inside the scooby doo universe” and yup, they’d be exactly right. that’s what it was.

This is a personal post.
I'm sorry, I just don't want to work with people who can't have an email discussion about a gift for the boss without getting in snide digs at something, anything, anymore. I don't know how much more I can handle of this before I say something controversial right to their faces.

Being a people pleaser with a child face and physically diminutive and round and soft and essentially an animal crossing villager + a martyrs complex + a woman sucks 99% OF THE TIME. But when it comes to being like 👉👈🥹 I am sweet and good and cause no problems and can be trusted, please let me live in your house??? Foolproof strategy

Something about how mental and moral and physical illness are all tangled up together in Cassandra’s head (metaphorically and literally, haha); her identity was founded in her intellect, and her brain tumor... well it didn’t take away that intellect, but it damaged it and made it less usable, “warped,” “sick,” and so it damaged her on every level. It took her identity, at fifteen years old—partly because that’s how her parents apparently responded, and partly because Cassandra didn’t have other ideas of herself to fall back on. She became the “math-girl” who couldn’t do math, the kid with a time bomb in her head, living as a “broken” version of herself in the shadow of death. She’s lived with said “brokenness” and said death sentence for what seems to be somewhere between ten and twenty years, and we keep getting indications that those things have dominated her life for that time.
And she’s not broken, obviously!! She’s still a genius, to start with, but she’s also still a person, with strengths and weaknesses and tastes and ideas outside of her tumor—but she hasn’t seen herself that way since she was fifteen.
And then, in the pilot, we get a fun new dimension added to this mess. Because she betrays the Library for the chance to get rid of the tumor, the nightmare that took her life away. She saw a door in the darkness that would undo all of that “brokenness,” and that’s why she went through it...
But then, at the end of the day, she turned around, realized what she’d done, and repented. Which meant she was left with the tumor still there... and the fun new self-image that said tumor had caused her to become morally “broken” as well.
So when she talks about her flaws and weaknesses, and talks about other people’s real or perceived lack of trust in her, it’s all bound up together—the physical peril, mental fragility, and moral untrustworthiness, all equated in her mind, all part of the same innate “brokenness” that first came from the tumor but is now spread all through her identity. In the haunted house episode she talked about her frailty and her betrayal in the same breath, because in her head they’re just two different manifestations of her sickness.
And she keeps trying to prove to the rest of the team that she can be trusted, she can be relied on, she isn’t just defined by that thing in her head. But I don’t think she’s been able to prove that to herself, yet. She’s working on it.

Please consider signing and helping out the St. Tammany Parish Library Alliance, which is now facing book bans and harassment of the library staff because the library dares have books about queer people on its shelves, and sometimes even has them on display, like for Pride Month.

though y'all are not ready for my personal joke lore that if lucien would pick a more flattering hairstyle and frames, and if he could be talked into updating his wardrobe even a few decades, he'd be at least a decent looking older man.

Added a children's [picture] book today that was requested by one of the education professors. It's a very soapboxy book. And on a very basic level I agree with the point, but yikes, that read like not so much a story as propaganda. Not even written by a literary author but a commentator.
I don't foresee this one being much of a hit with what few young patrons we have. Or with our education students.

The Biggest question at the American Library Association Convention in Washington DC this year is whether to walk the exhibit hall or march on the Supreme Court.
The important thing is it is my choice to make - no one else.

I have a Moriarty HC! In And The Hollow Men, they head to the Sumerian temple thingy for a staff. Flynn comes with Jay, the Library's brain personified, while Eve comes with Moriarty (who still can't drive). When Eve and Flynn are talking in the temple, Moriarty is watching jay go to the staff like a person watching a cat go to knock something over.
While that is going on, Moriarty is doing something with his lips- he is literally
Ducklipping.
So my hc is that his passive face, if he isn't doing something for Prospero, is a weird mix of ducklipping and a pout.
TL;DR I hc Moriartys passive face is ducklipping.
