Caine stores them in the cellar, a stimulus-free and infoproofed zone that calms the abstracted and nullifies emitted hazards. He genuinely cares about the inserted, but after only being able to do damage control for a continually deteriorating situation, the weight of his failure is beginning to weigh on him in a way he did not get to learn how to express.

Hello! I'm currently an MLIS student (no focus yet), and I've been thinking about getting a History MA as well. I've been told that doubling up on Master's degrees can be a hindrance in getting work as it makes it look like you can't commit to one field, but I noticed that you have an MLIS and a History MA. How were you able to make that work? Was it because of the overlap of topics you were studying?
(for extra context, I'm in the U.S. and I would be looking at an MA in late antique or medieval history)
The unvarnished truth is that there are way more people with degrees in our field than there are jobs, especially in blue states. Anything you have that can put you ahead of the pack, including a subject-specific MA, is good. Especially now that, as universities have so effectively cannibalized themselves, we have a glut of PhDs who can’t get TT positions horning in on the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) professions.
As for my career and the doubling up; it worked until it didn’t—in this profession it’s very difficult to move up or get a pay raise unless you’re willing to become a manager; and the pay in this field has NOT kept pace with COL or inflation.
To best position yourself in the job market, you need to get your MA in a modern field. Late Antiquity and Medieval GLAM jobs in this country are few and far between, and the competition is typically PhDs.
A Masters in some aspect of US history will be the best for you to build a case for yourself as a successful candidate. Also, learning database science, and as much coding and software as you can before you finish your degree.
Sorry for the cynicism. I have ten years of experience in this field plus the masters degrees and I haven’t even been contacted for an interview in over a year.
ETA: all of this said, if some random 35 year old had given me this advice when I was just starting grad school at the (too young, imo) age of 22, I would have blown it off as the rantings of a lazy, bitter failure so, ymmv. (Here, I would say “ah the arrogance of youth,” but I’ve always been stubborn and pig headed about my goals lol)

Do you have any tips for an aspiring librarian who’s going to college in a few months?
my first instinct upon reading this ask was to give you some good but fairly generic advice about getting library experience via your school's work study program, exploring different career paths within the library umbrella, interning at your local public library if possible, and so on & so forth
but then i realized that that is the sort of information you can find pretty much anywhere & i will instead give you my personal insight into what has helped me be successful in my current library role.
do whatever weird shit you are passionate about with your whole heart & soul, because you will learn invaluable skills without even intending to
what i mean by all that is that my current position as the assistant manager of a small, rural library branch is really just twenty-nine different jobs in a trench coat. i'm alternately an it specialist, a graphic designer, a career counselor, a preschool teacher, a customer service agent, or whatever else a particular situation demands.
and so much of my current skillset is a result of spending my high school & college years doing random nerd bullshit on the internet.
i'm dead serious. my ability to troubleshoot basically any possible tech issue, my knowledge of graphic design software, my extensive research capabilities, my written communication skills, and my absolute certainty that if i don't know how to do something, i can figure it out if you give me fifteen minutes to poke around on google are all products not of my formal education or work experience, but of the countless hours i have devoted to online nerd bullshit

J.4.7 What about the communications revolution?
Another important factor working in favour of anarchists is the existence of a sophisticated global communications network and a high degree of education and literacy among the populations of the core industrialised nations. Together these two developments make possible nearly instantaneous sharing and public dissemination of information by members of various progressive and radical movements all over the globe — a phenomenon that tends to reduce the effectiveness of repression by central authorities. The electronic-media and personal-computer revolutions also make it more difficult for elitist groups to maintain their previous monopolies of knowledge. Copy-left software and text, user-generated and shared content, file-sharing, all show that information, and its users, reaches its full potential when it is free. In short, the advent of the Information Age is potentially extremely subversive.
The very existence of the Internet provides anarchists with a powerful argument that decentralised structures can function effectively in a highly complex world. For the net has no centralised headquarters and is not subject to regulation by any centralised regulatory agency, yet it still manages to function effectively. Moreover, the net is also an effective way of anarchists and other radicals to communicate their ideas to others, share knowledge, work on common projects and co-ordinate activities and social struggle. By using the Internet, radicals can make their ideas accessible to people who otherwise would not come across anarchist ideas. In addition, and far more important than anarchists putting their ideas across, the fact is that the net allows everyone with access to express themselves freely, to communicate with others and get access (by visiting webpages and joining mailing lists and newsgroups) and give access (by creating webpages and joining in with on-line arguments) to new ideas and viewpoints. This is very anarchistic as it allows people to express themselves and start to consider new ideas, ideas which may change how they think and act.
Obviously we are aware that the vast majority of people in the world do not have access to telephones, never mind computers, but computer access is increasing in many countries, making it available, via work, libraries, schools, universities, and so on to more and more working class people.
Of course there is no denying that the implications of improved communications and information technology are ambiguous, implying Big Brother as well the ability of progressive and radical movements to organise. However, the point is only that the information revolution in combination with the other social developments could (but will not necessarily) contribute to a social paradigm shift. Obviously such a shift will not happen automatically. Indeed, it will not happen at all unless there is strong resistance to governmental and corporate attempts to limit public access to information, technology (e.g. encryption programs), censor peoples’ communications and use of electronic media and track them on-line.
This use of the Internet and computers to spread the anarchist message is ironic. The rapid improvement in price-performance ratios of computers, software, and other technology today is often used to validate the faith in free market capitalism but that requires a monumental failure of historical memory as not just the Internet but also the computer represents a spectacular success of public investment. As late as the 1970s and early 1980s, according to Kenneth Flamm’s Creating the Computer, the federal government was paying for 40 percent of all computer-related research and 60 to 75 percent of basic research. Even such modern-seeming gadgets as video terminals, the light pen, the drawing tablet, and the mouse evolved from Pentagon-sponsored research in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Even software was not without state influence, with databases having their root in US Air Force and Atomic Energy Commission projects, artificial intelligence in military contracts back in the 1950s and airline reservation systems in 1950s air-defence systems. More than half of IBM’s Research and Development budget came from government contracts in the 1950s and 1960s.
The motivation was national security, but the result has been the creation of comparative advantage in information technology for the United States that private firms have happily exploited and extended. When the returns were uncertain and difficult to capture, private firms were unwilling to invest, and government played the decisive role. And not for want of trying, for key players in the military first tried to convince businesses and investment bankers that a new and potentially profitable business opportunity was presenting itself, but they did not succeed and it was only when the market expanded and the returns were more definite that the government receded. While the risks and development costs were socialised, the gains were privatised. All of which make claims that the market would have done it anyway highly unlikely.
Looking beyond state aid to the computer industry we discover a “do-it-yourself” (and so self-managed) culture which was essential to its development. The first personal computer, for example, was invented by amateurs who wanted their own cheap machines. The existence of a “gift” economy among these amateurs and hobbyists was a necessary precondition for the development of PCs. Without this free sharing of information and knowledge, the development of computers would have been hindered and so socialistic relations between developers and within the working environment created the necessary conditions for the computer revolution. If this community had been marked by commercial relations, the chances are the necessary breakthroughs and knowledge would have remained monopolised by a few companies or individuals, so hindering the industry as a whole.
Encouragingly, this socialistic “gift economy” is still at the heart of computer/software development and the Internet. For example, the Free Software Foundation has developed the General Public Licence (GPL). GPL, also know as
“copyleft”, uses copyright to ensure that software remains free. Copyleft ensures that a piece of software is made available to everyone to use and modify as they desire. The only restriction is that any used or modified copyleft material must remain under copyleft, ensuring that others have the same rights as you did when you used the original code. It creates a commons which anyone may add to, but no one may subtract from. Placing software under GPL means that every contributor is assured that she, and all other uses, will be able to run, modify and redistribute the code indefinitely. Unlike commercial software, copyleft code ensures an increasing knowledge base from which individuals can draw from and, equally as important, contribute to. In this way everyone benefits as code can be improved by everyone, unlike commercial code.
Many will think that this essentially anarchistic system would be a failure. In fact, code developed in this way is far more reliable and sturdy than commercial software. Linux, for example, is a far superior operating system than DOS precisely because it draws on the collective experience, skill and knowledge of thousands of developers. Apache, the most popular web-server, is another freeware product and is acknowledged as the best available. The same can be said of other key web-technologies (most obviously PHP) and projects (Wikipedia springs to mind, although that project while based on co-operative and free activity is owned by a few people who have ultimate control). While non-anarchists may be surprised, anarchists are not. Mutual aid and co-operation are beneficial in the evolution of life, why not in the evolution of software? For anarchists, this “gift economy” at the heart of the communications revolution is an important development. It shows both the superiority of common development as well as the walls built against innovation and decent products by property systems. We hope that such an economy will spread increasingly into the “real” world.
Another example of co-operation being aided by new technologies is Netwar. This refers to the use of the Internet by autonomous groups and social movements to co-ordinate action to influence and change society and fight government or business policy. This use of the Internet has steadily grown over the years, with a Rand corporation researcher, David Ronfeldt, arguing that this has become an important and powerful force (Rand is, and has been since its creation in 1948, a private appendage of the military industrial complex). In other words, activism and activists’ power and influence has been fuelled by the advent of the information revolution. Through computer and communication networks, especially via the Internet, grassroots campaigns have flourished, and the most importantly, government elites have taken notice.
Ronfeldt specialises in issues of national security, especially in the areas of Latin American and the impact of new informational technologies. Ronfeldt and another colleague coined the term
“netwar” in a Rand document entitled “Cyberwar is Coming!”. Ronfeldt’s work became a source of discussion on the Internet in mid-March 1995 when Pacific News Service correspondent Joel Simon wrote an article about Ronfeldt’s opinions on the influence of netwars on the political situation in Mexico after the Zapatista uprising. According to Simon, Ronfeldt holds that the work of social activists on the Internet has had a large influence — helping to co-ordinate the large demonstrations in Mexico City in support of the Zapatistas and the proliferation of EZLN communiqués across the world via computer networks. These actions, Ronfeldt argues, have allowed a network of groups that oppose the Mexican Government to muster an international response, often within hours of actions by it. In effect, this has forced the Mexican government to maintain the facade of negotiations with the EZLN and has on many occasions, actually stopped the army from just going in to Chiapas and brutally massacring the Zapatistas.
Given that Ronfeldt was an employee of the Rand Corporation his comments indicate that the U.S. government and its military and intelligence wings are very interested in what the Left is doing on the Internet. The memo, written by Riordan Roett, argued that “the [Mexican] government will need to eliminate the Zapatistas to demonstrate their effective control of the national territory and of security policy”. In other words, if the Mexican government wants investment from Chase, it would have to crush the Zapatistas. This information was relatively ineffective when just confined to print but when it was uploaded to the Internet, it suddenly reached a very large number of people. These people in turn co-ordinated protests against the U.S and Mexican governments and especially Chase Manhattan. Chase was eventually forced to attempt to distance itself from the Roett memo that it commissioned. Since then net-activism has grown.
Ronfeldt’s research and opinion should be flattering for the Left. He is basically arguing that the efforts of activists on computers not only has been very effective (or at least has that potential), but more importantly, argues that the only way to counter this work is to follow the lead of social activists. Activists should understand the important implications of Ronfeldt’s work: government elites are not only watching these actions (big surprise) but are also attempting to work against them. There’s a strange man who frequents your library from the time it opens until it closes. He's dressed in a tan hooded sweatshirt, a black hat that looked better worn during the winter months, and a blank expression on his face that never quite seems to emote. Even though you usually arrive at work a few minutes before the start of your workday, the man is usually hunched over by the entrance, his stance clearly relaxed.
For as long as you've remembered, the man was always alone. Aside from the backpack that housed a laptop and a few other essentials you were not privy to, he had no other belongings. Briefly, whenever you decided to give him some thought, you wondered if he was homeless.
It would make sense.
The clothes usually stayed the same, the scent of mustiness that reminded you of campsites and forests filling your nostrils. However, other than his permanent outfit, you had the feeling that he wasn't an absolute slob. You had no right to judge, but you had the feeling that maybe he frequented public facilities like local gyms to accommodate his hygienic needs.Â
Maybe he did have a home and you were overthinking.
Whatever the case, it didn't matter.
You always unlocked the door for him if you were the first to clock in and it went unspoken amongst your colleagues that it was best not to disturb the man.
And so, it went like that for months, maybe even years. You weren't particularly too detail oriented about the specifics of how long you had known the man in the tan hoodie, but you did know that it was rare not to see him in the library.
Even though it was none of your business, you often wondered if he worked solely through remote means. Perhaps he didn't have wifi wherever he lived and was utilizing the library's resources. Sometimes, whenever you glanced up from your desk or reshelved books into their proper places, you would find him leaving his laptop behind on one of the tables he monopolized for himself to peruse the bookshelves. He never checked out a book to take home, but you did catch him bussing stacks of texts to his table. Minutes later, he would end up scribbling on scraps of paper he would tear from battered notebooks.Â
On the rare occasion that you were the sole person to reshelve the books he left behind, you realized that he was picking up books about codes, ciphers, and texts about computer programming and software.
In the beginning, you chalked it up to a hobby that he liked to pursue in the midst of his work.
That is, until you managed to get a good look at his laptop and the notes that he left on the table one afternoon.
At the very beginning, the man in the tan hoodie used to close his laptop shut and flip over his notepad or weigh it down with a series of reference texts. However, for some reason unknown to you, he must have felt relaxed enough to leave everything on his work station available for everyone to see. You spotted him retreating into the men's bathroom—not an unusual scene—but you happened to be only a few feet away from his table at that exact moment.
Your next few actions were unprecedented and unconscious.
As a librarian, you learned from the very beginning not to judge people for their tastes and preferences. So what if there was a middle aged woman reading erotica meant for women years younger than her? Or that was a young man reading a children's series about school mysteries? Or that there was a straightlaced businessman checking out a niche manga series from the nineties? Checking out books meant more engagement, which could potentially lead to more funding for your library. You only checked their library card and made sure that they returned their books on time.
But this was the man in the tan hooded sweatshirt.
He was a mystery who not only perplexed you, but also your coworkers.Â
What you were going to do next was neither illegal nor immoral… Perhaps a little questionable, but that meant nothing!Â
It wasn’t wrong to take a quick glance at someone’s work, just a passing glance nothing more. Everyone always caught a glimpse that wasn’t necessarily their business, so why was this any different? And if you were caught, you could say that you had dropped something near his work space… You were merely an unobtrusive, simple librarian. What was this man going to do to you for being curious?
Your interest had been piqued so long ago and you had been patient, you needed to know.
Before you could stop yourself, you swiftly walked over to the table and took a sneak peek at his laptop.Â
What you saw on the screen looked banal and not at all what you expected to see from the man in the tan hoodie. He used a browser unfamiliar to you, but anyone from a mile away could initially recognize the layout of YouTube. You focused on the video player upon the screen, squinting at the video’s title.
It appeared to be nondescript and unassuming; it was titled “entry” followed by what you assumed was its corresponding number.Â
The uploader of the video was also unknown, but their handle was far more whimsical than you had expected from the title alone. Marble Hornets, you read. What, were the hornets made out of marble? Or were they marbles with hornets in them?Â
Still, the name stuck with you despite it all.Â
You found your eyes drifting past the keyboard and onto the series of books and scraps of paper that littered the majority of his table. For some unfathomable reason, a number of those scraps of paper were littered with dozens of sketches of pine trees, strange circles that were crossed out, and vague, disturbing warnings about something watching in the woods. You dared not touch any of the scraps lest you leave incriminating evidence behind, but you did see that one of the reference texts was open to a page about encryption methods.Â
Glossing over the contents, you didn’t learn too much except that whoever the man was, he was smart.Â
Whatever the case, you didn’t want to any longer than you had to. It was one thing to sneak a glance at his belongings, quite another to be caught theorizing right in front of him. Quickly, you hurried off to another part of the library, something nondescript like the children’s section.Â
No sooner did you help a child pull the newest picture book off of a shelf did you spot the man striding from the bathroom and towards his spot. Averting your eyes, you gently reminded the child to not tear the pages and to ask for more help if they needed it. Excited and eager to please, the child thanked you heartily and skipped away to whom you thought was their guardian.Â
You happened to turn around at that exact moment—later on, you would contemplate why—only to find that the man in the tan hoodie was staring at you. Normally, whenever you found yourself locking eyes with the man—usually in passing—one or both of you would nod in acknowledgement before quickly turning away. That simply wasn’t the case now.Â
For five complete seconds, his eyes held you in place, the expression on his face strange and surreal to see on his normally impassive visage.Â
And then—
When you began entertaining the idea that maybe he knew or had seen you retreating, he turned away and began scribbling something in one of his papers.Â
You could only hope that he wasn’t furiously drawing more trees.Â
After that incident, you forgot about that strange man.Â
At the end of the day, you were still a librarian and that meant that you still had to cater to a variety of people's interests. There were a group of young ladies who wanted to know if the latest romance novel by a famous author had been shipped. An older gentleman with a hearing impairment asked if there were any books about developmental psychology. There were other questions and requests; all of them, you were sure to fulfill to the best of your ability.Â
Shortly after, the librarian closed and you watched as the stragglers gathered the last of their books, logged off their computers, or printed out the last of their research papers. Once that was done, you said goodbye to your fellow coworker, some of whom decided to stay a little later just to tidy up and gossip.
You laughed a little at that, but wished them the best for their evenings before you stepped out of the premises and into the chilly evening air. Having been working in this library for a while now, your guard wasn't up as you walked into the near empty parking lot, your car parked strategically near a lamplight so that it illuminated it perfectly. As you unlocked your vehicle, you began to feel a tickling sensation at the nape of your neck that trickled down your spine and raised the skin on your arms.
Someone was watching you, possibly from behind.
On guard, you immediately turned around, your keys wrapped in your fist as if you were brandishing a knife. Before you could initiate a stabbing or slashing motion should you find someone or something standing behind you, your hand was immediately intercepted by someone who was stronger than you. The shock of being caught without so much as a backup plan hindered you from recognizing the person holding you hostage until you noticed that the man was wearing a tan hoodie and that same expression on his face that you spotted him wearing him the last time you saw him, was aimed at you.Â
It was wariness and suspicion.Â
“What did you see?”Â
His voice was raspy and soft, as if it had been a long time since he had used it. However, you could not deny that even though there was a lack of volume, there was a notable threat—as if the tightening hold on your wrist wasn’t enough.Â
“W-what—”
“Don’t play stupid.” His grip flexed and you had no choice but to let go of the keys. As they cluttered onto the ground, he relaxed the hold he had on you, but the look in his eyes was still suspicious. But there was also an undercurrent of desperation. “What did you see?”
Maybe he had known all along that you had been watching him.Â
You were stupid to think that you could get away with this, but it was all for curiosity’s sake! There was no way he was getting riled up over something this stupid!
“F-fine!” You gritted your teeth and answered, “All I saw was a YouTube video and some of your creepy drawings. Happy?”
His eyes hardened. “You’re the one snooping through my belongings. Why should I trust you?”
You bit the inside of your mouth. “Okay, it was wrong of me to take a look—it was just a loo!—and I should have respected your space! I’m sorry! I didn’t see anything other than that! Honest!”
Finally, after you thought that he was sizing you up for a mugging, the man in the tan hoodie finally let go and practically shoved you into your driver’s seat. You tripped, but managed to right yourself so that you could cast one more fearful glance at your attacker.Â
“What the—”
“Go home, stay home. And don’t go snooping into places you aren’t supposed to.”
Had you the bravery, you would have retaliated, but you could barely stomach your shock when he grabbed your keys from the ground before throwing them into your lap.Â
By the time you slammed your door shut, locked and made sure all of your windows were secure, and started the ignition, the stranger was long gone.
That was the last time you ever saw him.Â
However, you couldn’t help but sense the feeling that something was following you. Always in the periphery of your vision, but never quite coming into focus. It was not the man in the tan hoodie, but it was something far more malevolent.
And it reminded you of the strange drawings that the man had scribbled.Â
What else had you seen?
Oh. You remembered now.Â
A tall, slender man hiding among the trees.Â

Researcher studies blockchain in Brazil-Arab trade
Helena Leite Rodrigues Fernandes, from São Paulo, obtained an MBA from USP on opportunities for applying blockchain technology in Brazil’s relationship with Arab countries. The Arab Brazilian Chamber’s platform was studied.

On the one hand, blockchain and its ample application possibilities. On the other hand, Brazil’s trade relationship with the Arab countries and its growth potential. Uniting these two universes and verifying how the first is benefiting and can make the latter advance even further was the object of research of 23-year-old University of São Paulo (USP) graduate student Helena Leite Rodrigues Fernandes from São Paulo.
Earlier this August, Fernandes presented her final assignment for her MBA in Digital Business at the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture (ESALQ) of USP, titled “Blockchain technology: Opportunities for applicability in trade relations between Brazil and the Arab countries.” The work received full marks, and the professors who accompanied the research presentation indicated it would remain in the USP Library as a reference.
The story of the São Paulo native with technology began at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC), where she worked in the customer relationship management (CRM) system for four years. Despite having a degree in Marketing, based on her experience with software, the young woman wanted to delve into technology and became interested in blockchain. “I like to study, and I told myself: Let’s see what’s trending in the technology market besides CRM. I discovered several very cool things,” she said.
Fernandes started studying blockchain initially in a self-taught way, relying mainly on content in English, as she found little information on the subject in Portuguese. She also started to attend blockchain events and workshops. When she went looking for an MBA in 2020, however, she did not find courses specifically focused on the subject but believed USP’s Digital Business was a good way to unite blockchain and business, which she intended to study.
