Another Sibling Danny and Jason idea!!

"Are you Jason Peter Todd?!" demanded a deep and commanding tone from the strange glowing being in front of them.

All the Bats stiffened and tensed, no doubt gearing up for a fight against the being that somehow knew Red Hood's full name.

Jason, Red Hood, decided to put on a brave front despite no doubt cursing in his head and wondering how the heck did this thing know his full freaking name.

"Whose asking." he snarled out, his hands twitching for his gun when the huge glowing knight with purple flames coming out of his helmet and cape, who was riding on a nightmare looking horse while they all had been in the cave going over tonight's patrol.

The Knight didn't seemed bothered by his response nor did he even seem to care or flinch when Batman made his own demand on 'Why was he there and who was he' or when Damian unsheathed his sword and pointed it towards him. Instead the strange glowing Knight reached to it side and pulled out... A glowing scroll? Huh. (Also he completely unnerved everyone in the room when the Knight didn't even react when Batman had tossed a Baterang when he reached for his side)

The Knight opened the scroll and spoke clearly with purpose.

"Jason Peter Todd,

You are hereby invited as a special guest of honor to the crowning of our future King of the Infinite Realms.

Daniel Phantom, once Daniel Jackson Fenton, and once Daniel Austen Todd.

Prince of the Infinite Realms, the Keeper of Balance, The Peacekeeping Halfa, the Defeater of the Tyrant King Pariah Dark, The Great One, Youngest of the Ancients, Ancient of Space, The Bridge between Life and Death.

January Crowd-Pleasers

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Does this sequel reach the heights of 2017’s Wonder Woman? No, but I wish more superhero movies were like this one. I explain why at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10

21 Bridges (2019)

A solid action crime thriller with a solid Chadwick Boseman at the center. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10

The Lethal Weapon Series (1987-98)

I watched the first Lethal Weapon in 2017 for ZekeFilm, but now I’ve a decade’s pleasure of progressively over-the-top action sequences and progressively more absurd ways to destroy Roger Murtaugh’s (Danny Glover) house. The Murtaugh/Riggs bromance holds this progressively sillier series together, and an supporting cast of charismatic actors (Jet Li, Darlene Love, Chris Rock, Rene Russo) are game for whatever comes their way. Joe Pesci is the true MVP. Series Crowd: 9/10 // Series Critic: 7/10

The High Note (2020)

Tracee Ellis Ross’s Grace Davis is a diva in every sense of the word. A high-strung and highly successful singer, she’s also highly demanding of her assistant Maggie (Dakota Johnson), who wants to step out of her shadow and become a music producer. This rom-com-adjacent flick is one of the most fun escapes I’ve had from a 2020 movie, and it’s perfect for a girls’ night in. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10

Double Feature—Rom-Coms With a Magical Twist: Just My Luck (2006) + When In Rome (2010)

Disclaimer: These movies are not good. In fact, they’re junk, but they’re my kind of junk. In Just My Luck (Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 6/10), Lindsay Lohan loses her life-long lucky streak when she kisses schlimazel Chris Pine. And When in Rome (Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 6/10), Kristen Bell attracts unwanted admirers (Will Arnett, Danny DeVito, Josh Duhamel, Jon Heder, and real-life future husband Dax Shepard) after she steals their coins from a wishing fountain. To their credit, both of these movies know they’re silly, which means you have permission to just sit back and laugh along with (or, honestly, at) them.

WandaVision (2021)

I sometimes fear for the world of entertainment when I think of how much intellectual property Disney has gobbled up, but WandaVision is evidence the company is a benevolent dictator at least for now. This odd delight is a send up and a tribute to sitcoms like I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Brady Bunch, and Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen are so charming and weird I don’t need whatever mysterious sub-plot they’re building.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

If you want to make the most of watching Robin Hood: Men in Tights, first watch Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), an action flick I saw last February and didn’t include in my monthly Round Up. This Mel Brooks spoof is a direct response that self-serious Kevin Costner adventure, even down to copying its costumes. While I wish I could find a Mel Brooks comedy with any substantial female character (in every movie I’ve seen so far, the joke is either, “She’s got a great rack!” or “Wow, she’s an uggo!”), I still couldn’t stop laughing at this 104-minute version of the Robin Hood scene in Shrek. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10

Aliens (1986)

Peak ‘80s action. Peak alien grossness. Peak girl boss Sigourney Weaver. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/.510

Big (1988)

After talking about Laverne & Shirley with Kyla on SO IT’S A SHOW?, I had to check out Penny Marshall’s classic. While a few moments haven’t aged so well, its heart is sweet and the script is hilarious. And that Tom Hanks? I think he’s going places. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 8/10

Unstoppable (2010)

I’ve laughed at SNL’s spoof of this movie for a decade, so it’s about time I got around to enjoying this action thriller very loosely based on the true story of a train that got away from its conductor. Denzel Washington (“You’re too old!”) and Chris Pine (“You’re too young!”) are our heroes in this over-the-top ridiculousness, and their chemistry is so extra it makes me hope they team up for another movie again. Crowd:  9/10 // Critic: 7/10

January Critic Picks

Double Feature—‘90s Space Adventures: Apollo 13 (1995) + Contact (1997)

I have no desire to join Tom Cruise as he films in space, but I know I’ll be pumped to watch whatever he makes because I love sci-fi and space  adventures. Apollo 13 (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10) tells the story of an almost-disastrous NASA mission in the ‘60s, and it taps into our hope for the human spirit to overcome obstacles. Contact (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10) surmises what might happen if we received communication from extraterrestrial life, and it taps into our struggle to reconcile faith and science.

McCartney III by Paul McCartney (2020)

I spent January catching up on the albums on Best of 2020 lists, and the one I listened to for hours and hours was Paul McCartney’s latest solo album. Catchy, thoughtful, and musically surprising, it ranges from pop to rock to folk in 45 minutes and still feels like it’s over too soon. Like Tom Hanks, this Paul McCartney guy is going places!

The Thin Man Series (1934-47)

Like Lethal Weapon, I watched the first installment of The Thin Man awhile back, and Kyla and I even covered the series on our podcast. But thanks to a full series marathon on TCM earlier this month, I’ve now laughed through all five. When you talk about great chemistry, you’ve got to talk about William Powell and Myrna Loy, who make Nick and Nora’s marriage feel lived in and romantic as they solve crimes together. Witty, suspenseful, and jaunty, this series is still sexy cool over 80 years later. (Also, Asta? Still one of the cutest dogs in cinema.) Series Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10

The King and I (1956)

Here’s your regularly scheduled reminder Hollywood works differently now, and many casting decisions of the ‘50s wouldn’t fly today. What has aged well in this film: The Rodgers and Hammerstein music and the sumptuous costumes and set design. I love extravagant musicals of yesteryear—perhaps it’s time for Hollywood to revisit and remake The King and I for modern audiences?

Inauguration Day

In a year with no major televised events with celebrities in a room together, Inauguration Day felt like the most exciting cultural event in ages. We’ve been missing major fashion, but then we got Lady Gaga! We’ve been missing live performances, but then we got Amanda Gorman! And I got a lot of tears during that poem—not just me, right?

Double Feature—Miss Marple Mysteries: Murder at the Gallop (1963) + Murder Ahoy (1964)

Remember when I was all like, “Watch these Agatha Christie movies so you’re not sad Death on the Nile is delayed”? Remember when I said I was just a few movies away from becoming an Agatha Christie junkie? Well, I think I’m there because I can’t stop with the murder mysteries! Margaret Rutherford is a treasure whether she’s solving a murder at a horse ranch or on a boat, and a cast of colorful supporting characters (including Rutherford’s husband) makes these breezy instead of heavy. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 8/10

8½ (1963)

File this with 2001: A Space Odyssey—I don’t know if I really understood this film, but I think I liked it? Federico Fellini’s surrealist, male gaze-y drama blurs the lines between reality and imagination, love and dysfunction, and the past and maybe some future that involves clowns? What resonated with me was the story of a director with creative block, wondering if he’s already peaked and if he’ll create anything worthwhile again. Crowd: 6/10 // Critic: 9/10

Sense and Sensibility: The Screenplay and Diaries by Emma Thompson (1995)

Sense and Sensibility is not just one of my favorite Jane Austen adaptations—it’s one of my all-time favorite films. One of the co-hosts of one of my favorite podcasts has raved many-a-time about Emma Thompson’s journals from the making of film, so it was only a matter of time before I read them myself. Witty, informative, and all-around lovely, Thompson’s journals are an excellent insight into the filmmaking process and how novels are adapted.

I reviewed the new-ish documentary Flannery for ZekeFilm, which is all about the writer Flannery O’Connor and feels a little like going back to high school English class.

In addition to the Lethal Weapon and Thin Man series, I rewatched all of the X-Men series this month. You can see everything I am watching on Letterboxd, including favorites I love returning to (i.e. X-Men: Days of Future Past) and the movies I try that don’t make my monthly recommendations (i.e. The Wolverine).

“Evidence” for Night King/Queen Theory

Mostly flimsy stuff but take it as you will. This is the new hill I wish to die on. Bury me with the words “Night Queen Dany” on my tombstone.

1) “We could stay a thousand years. No one would find us. “We’d be pretty old.”

2) There must always be a Night King (according to leaks, Bran has a vision about this). This would be quite the line to drop in with no follow up. We’ve got to see a new Night King/Queen.

3) These differing leaks possibly all being somewhat true to form together this theory:

Drogon allegedly takes Dany’s body away after Jon kills her and leaves Jon inexplicably alive.

Other leaks had Jon and Dany riding off on the dragons.

Some leaks say Jon will head back North to “form a new Night’s Watch”.

4) “What if the Seven Kingdoms were ruled by a just woman and an honorable man?” Oh Davos baby, they will be, just not in the way you thought.

5) Night King’s symbols pointing to the last two Targaryens taking his place (Aegon the Conqueror could have seen this symbol in a vision (vision from the Night King) and this is why he made it his House sigil).

6) Dany’s HOTU vision from the show, the only throne she will sit on is one covered in snow, because she’ll be up north in the Lands of Always Winter:

This is official artwork for the series (HBO commissioned Robert Ball to make this art, there’s one for every episode of the series). The art series is called “Beautiful Death” which in and of itself is a pretty interesting title.

But since Ball has made these obviously prior to the episodes airing, he knows how the series ends. And at the bottom of this one for 8x01, you can see Jon and Dany together and they appear to be in front of the waterfall...but the waterfall looks suspiciously like:

The fortress of the Night King and White Walkers.

8) Chekhov’s gun of the season - Pregnant Dany. This was so heavily foreshadowed last season and hasn’t happened yet. And I mean, GOT has killed pregnant women before (RIP Talisa), but if there needs to be more white walkers, what better way than bringing dead-pregnant-Dany back so she can birth an undead baby?

9) Matt Bellamy’s “Pray” on the new GOT inspired album:

“We can bring her back.” Well, Jon may certainly try.

11) Kinda fits Azor Ahai...? Jon kills the love of his life by stabbing her. Gains the power to deliver the world from a darkness - the darkness being the greed of men.

12) There’s already been a Night’s Queen (corpse queen) in the books - the 13th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch fell in love with a woman with “skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars” and “skin was cold as ice”. Jon was a Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch.

13) As @cleemail pointed out in another post, Dany dreams of something similar: “Beneath her coverlets she tossed and turned, dreaming that Hizdahr was kissing her … but his lips were blue and bruised, and when he thrust himself inside her, his manhood was cold as ice.”

Some of this is strange but I LOVE the point about Brave Danny Flint being at the Nightfort (where the Night’s King and Night’s Queen ruled) and her possibly turning into the Night’s Queen after she was raped and killed by the Black Brothers.

15) Kimmel asked D&D “Are we for sure done with the White Walkers” and Benioff said “We’re not gonna answer that.”

16) This is why D&D made the executive decision to have neither Jon nor Dany kill the Night King - because they’d both take up his post eventually.

17) Book!Dany calls herself “Mother of Monsters” and we’re meant to believe the monsters are the dragons, but what if they’re the new white walkers?

18) Jon and Dany have both been called the “Prince that was Promised” so what if the Red Priests got it right, but didn’t know what the PTWP actually was and ended up being the very thing they thought they had to fight against?

19) Dany wanted to “break the wheel” but she will sadly have to become a part of the wheel to keep the realms of men in check (the wheel being that there must always be a Night King).

20) Isaac Hempstead Wright said, “It won't go the way some people want. It will be too happy for some people, or too sad, or too whatever.” A Jon/Dany Night King/Queen/White Walker babies might just be too happy for some people who were hoping they would both just die tragically and stay dead. He also said they end it in a very “Game of Thrones way” and the opening scene of the show was about the White Walkers - the last scene could be White Walker Jon/Dany.

22) The prequel series will focus on the first Long Night so it may explain why there needs to always be a Night King.

Startling News, Pt. 2

A follow-up to this ficlet I posted about a week ago (which takes place in my King Stansort AU), in which Ford discovers that his twin has been in Europe for quite some time, rubbing shoulders with nobility, actually marrying a queen, and becoming a father to two princesses.  So here, have Ford discussing this with his research partner, only to find out that Fiddleford has connections to Stan of his own.

              “The would-be assassin is still at large. Much of the royal family is in the castle for their protection, though there are rumors that one of the princes left this morning-”

              “Stanford?” Fiddleford’s voice called.  Ford turned off the TV.  Fiddleford walked into the living room, carrying his suitcase.  “Sorry I didn’t come back when I said I would.  Something came up, and I had to stay longer than I planned.”  Normally, Ford loved hearing Fiddleford speak with his European, vaguely French accent.

              But I have bigger fish to fry right now.

              “Fiddleford, I-” Ford started.  He paused and pinched the bridge of his nose.  Fiddleford looked at him in concern.

              “What’s wrong?”

              “I found out where my twin has been this whole time,” Ford said. Fiddleford’s eyes widened.  “I know, I never told you I had a twin.  But I do.  His name is Stanley.  And I found out that he’s been in Europe for the past, oh, ten years or so.  And not just anywhere in Europe.  Your home country.  Lirone.”  Fiddleford opened his mouth.  “How did I find out?” Ford continued, disregarding Fiddleford.  “Well, he was on the news.  He was on international news, because his wife was the subject of an assassination attempt.  His wife, who happens to be the queen of Lirone.”  Ford ran his hands through his hair.  “Fiddleford, my twin brother is the leader of your home country.”

              “Technically, the queen is the ruler.  The king consort is king in name only.  He doesn’t have any ruling powers on his own,” Fiddleford said.  Ford waved a hand.

              “Still!  Stan never even finished high school!  How did he end up marrying a literal queen?  A queen, by the way, who seems to be way out of his league.”  Ford began to pace.  “Not only is she royalty, but she had a top-notch education at some of the finest schools in Europe.  She’s fluent in five languages.  She’s an expert horse rider and sharpshooter.  She’s way too good for Stan.  She also- she looks a bit familiar.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe it’s her face?  Her nose seems-”  Ford froze. He slowly turned to face Fiddleford. “Her nose.”

              “Lute owes me twenty bucks,” Fiddleford said dryly, setting his suitcase on the floor.  “He bet that you wouldn’t be able to figure it out without a hint.”

              “You- you’re-” Ford stammered.  Fiddleford raised an eyebrow.  “You’re related to the queen of Lirone.”

              “Yes.  I am,” Fiddleford said regally.  The gears in Ford’s head turned furiously.

              The news said something about one of the princes leaving the castle this morning.  Ford clapped a hand over his mouth.

              “You’re a prince,” he whispered.  Fiddleford nodded.  “You’re- Stan is your brother-in-law?”

              “Yes, he is.”  Fiddleford sighed and sat down in the armchair.  “I’m glad that all of this is out in the open, I’ve got to admit.  Ever since we met at college, I’ve been keeping my relationship with your twin a secret.”

              “But why?”

              “He asked,” Fiddleford said with a shrug.  “I didn’t question his reasoning.  Not at first.  But eventually, I started thinking I should tell you, anyways.  It was too late for me, though.  By that point, Stan was already engaged to Angie, and I didn’t want to disobey the wishes of the future king consort.”

              “You- how- what-”

              “The reason I had to stay longer was because of the assassination attempt. Stan needed some support.  So did Angie, though I didn’t get much of a chance to see her.”  Fiddleford smiled faintly.  “Mostly I just kept Danny and Daisy out of Stan’s hair while he picked up Angie’s responsibilities.”

              “Danny and Daisy.  Those are the princesses?” Ford asked.  Fiddleford nodded.  “My nieces.” Fiddleford nodded again.  Ford rubbed his face.  “I can’t believe I have two nieces I didn’t know about.  And they’re literal princesses.”

              “They’re sweethearts, too,” Fiddleford said.  Ford strode over to the armchair Fiddleford was sitting in.

              “I need to see them.”

              “Stanford…”

              “They’re my nieces.  And Stan’s my twin.  He just saw his wife almost get killed.  I should be there.”

              “Look…”  Fiddleford sighed.  “I understand your reasoning.  I just don’t know whether Stan would appreciate a visit right now.  He’s busy.”

              “He needs support.”

              “You didn’t offer him support when he got kicked out of the house years ago,” Fiddleford said.  Ford opened and closed his mouth silently.  “That was rude of me, I apologize.  But that’s how Stan will see it.”

              “I want to make amends,” Ford insisted.  Fiddleford shook his head.  “It’s the right thing to do.  I felt like I couldn’t do anything before, but now that I know you’re a prince…”

              “I don’t think-”

              “He’s my family.  When we were younger, he was the person who meant the most to me.  We have our differences, but I can’t refuse to offer condolences or assistance when I know he’s going through something this terrible.” Ford could tell his final plea was successful.  Fiddleford pressed his palms to his eyes.

              “Fine,” he muttered.  “We’ll- I’ll take you to Lirone to meet with him again.  Now that you know where he is, I don’t see much merit in trying to keep you away.”

              “Thank you, Fiddleford.”  Ford smiled warmly at his research partner.  Fiddleford smiled back hesitantly.  “And I think his reaction will be better than you expect.  He was fine with you working with me, after all.”

              “He doesn’t know,” Fiddleford said.  Ford frowned.

              “Pardon?”

              “Stan doesn’t know you’re the person I’ve been doing research with.  I haven’t told anyone in the family.”

              “Wh- why not?”

              “Stan’s not happy with you.  And since he’s not happy, neither is Angie.  Or my younger brother.  Or my older brothers.  Or my parents.”  A growing sense of dread built in Ford’s gut.

              “Your entire family hates me?”

              “Hate is a strong word.  More like, they won’t go out of their way to make you feel welcome in the castle.” Fiddleford forced a grin.  “Better go pack, Stanford.  We’ll catch a flight first thing in the morning.”

Prinxiety at Kings Island - Part Two

Now Roman and Virgil were towards the back of the amusement park. The two of them got into the short line for the Windseeker. It was a tall swing ride that went hundreds of feet up into the air. Virgil found it terrifying every time he rode it because he always imagined himself falling from that height. He somehow always ended up riding it despite his fears.

The Windseeker may be a scary attraction, but cool music always played on the way up and down. It somewhat calmed people’s nerves, but it never helped Virgil. He saw past the fake charade that they were putting up. The park was trying to make it seem less horrifying, and he didn’t find it working.

Once they were back on the ground, Virgil found himself feeling a bit dizzy. Trying to jump out of the seat didn’t help because the bottom of his feet now stung. When he took a step forward, he stumbled a little bit. Roman chuckled as he gently grabbed Virgil’s arm and helped guide him out of the ride and to a bench to sit down.

“Are you alright?” Roman asked.

“I’ll be fine,” Virgil said, “The Windseeker always makes me dizzy. I think it’s because of how high it is. It causes me a lot of anxiety, but I still like to ride it.”

“Are you afraid of heights?”

“Not that much. I can do all of the roller coasters and go to the top floor of tall buildings, but the Windseeker is different. There’s nothing I can do if it breaks and there are cases of some Windseeker rides getting stuck at the top. I could also die if I fell from that height.”

“Yeah, I can understand why you would be nervous.”

Virgil soon got over his dizziness and stood up to signal that he was ready to continue. Roman was glad that Virgil felt better. He had immediately felt worried when he saw Virgil stumble around. He was having a lot of fun and didn’t want it to be ruined for Virgil if he felt sick. He knew that Virgil would feel bad about it, even though he wouldn’t have been able to help it. Smiling, Roman walked alongside Virgil as they went to the next ride.

The Vortex was another roller coaster that they skipped. Neither of them liked it that much since it made them very uncomfortable. It was okay to ride once in a while, but not every trip. Their heads always got banged around on the restraints by their heads, giving them bad headaches sometimes. There were a lot of loops, but they were annoying.

Instead, they made their way to their favorite ride at Kings Island: The Beast. When it opened in 1979, it was the tallest, fastest, and longest wooden roller coaster. While it wasn’t the tallest anymore (having been beat out by Goliath at Six Flags Great America) or the fastest (which was now Lightning Rod at Dollywood), it was still the longest. The Beast was very intense. When they first built it and had it tested by a few people, they were absolutely spooked when going through the end tunnels because there were no breaks used during the swift turns. They added them in and that part of the ride was still the most intense. The coaster zoomed through the woods at a very high speed, and it was the best at night since it seemed to be spookier and faster. It was by far the best thing to happen to the amusement park.

“The Beast really is a beauty,” Virgil commented.

“You could say that the story is wrong, it’s actually called Beauty is the Beast,” Roman joked.

“Shut up.”

Next, they rode the Backlot Stunt Coaster. Before, it was called Italian Job: Stunt Track, but it was obviously renamed. It was a smaller coaster, but it was still fast and exciting. The cars turned rapidly, passing the different road signs and cop cars. In the middle, the cars stopped and waited as helicopter sounds were played and fire lights around them. Then, they were plunged into darkness and then exited the wall to the outside world as if they crashed through it.

Virgil and Roman decided to take a small break from the thrill rides and head towards Kiddie Land. They wanted to ride a few of the more childish attractions, such as Boo Blasters on Boo Hill, Surf Dog, and the Woodstock Express.

“I miss this being Nickelodeon and not Snoopy,” Virgil mentioned. “That was my childhood in this place and, frankly, it was a lot better. I remember being really sad when my mom told me that Cedar Fair had bought out this place. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cedar Fair parks too, but I preferred Kings Island being owned by Paramount.”

“I know!” Roman exclaimed. “Boo Blasters used to be Scooby Doo themed and the Woodstock Express featured the Fairly Odd Parents. The trains were even painted as Cosmo and Wanda! I also loved running through that Spongebob splash pad.”

“Yeah, and that yellow roller coaster over there, I think it’s called Flying Ace Aerial Chase, was the Rugrats and the log ride was the Wild Thornberrys. I also miss the one where you lay on your stomach being Danny Phantom. My favorite one was what Surf Dog used to be, though. It was Avatar the Last Airbender before!”

Obviously they were bitter about Cedar Fair buying Kings Island from Paramount. Who could blame them? Everything was changed to Snoopy this and Snoopy that! There was nothing wrong with The Peanuts, and they still loved Charlie Brown and his lovable dog, but those characters were already used at Cedar Point, which was another amusement park in Ohio. They liked how there was a more variety in characters and themes going on before, but now that was missing.

As they were in Kiddie Land, Virgil ended up beating Roman at the shooting game in Boo Blasters on Boo Hill. Roman claimed that his blaster was broken and that was why he didn’t get at many points, but they both knew that that was not the case. Roman was just really bad at it.

They also rode the other two rides that they had come there for, but nothing significant really happened while they were doing so. They mainly just teased one another the entire time. They did see a few of the kids from Sanders Summer Camp, but most of them were too busy running around and having fun to stop and talk to them.

When they were tired of the lamer rides, they went to ride Mystic Timbers. The line was a tiny bit longer because it was the newest roller coaster in the park, but it still didn’t take much time at all. The crowds had stayed away that day like they hoped, so the lines weren’t too bad.

Mystic Timbers was wooden, but it was not nearly as long as The Beast. There were lots of twists and turns that led to a fun ride, but the ending was pretty weird. The train slowly entered and stopped inside of a shed. A voice recording warned them not to go in, but they did anyway. After a few seconds, some music started playing on its own. Everyone focused on a large screen on the wall in front of them, wondering what would happen. They waited there for what seemed like forever before they started to move forward again. As they did, a giant tree creature popped up on the screen. The monster was supposed to be frightening, but Virgil and Roman thought that it was lame. The tree was one of three things the screen could have showed. The other two could have been snakes or bats, possibly representing the Diamondback and The Bat. The tree represented Mystic Timbers.

The only roller coaster that they hadn’t ridden yet but wanted to was the Diamondback. Since it was after dinner time, they grabbed some chicken tenders and fries from a nearby food stand and ate while waiting in line. When they were in the front, they threw away their trash and got on. The seats were very different than on other roller coasters. Each car on the train had two seats close together in the front and two spread apart on the back. The last pair of seats had a long line, so Virgil and Roman sat in the second to last pair of seats.

Diamondback was a tall coaster that made one’s stomach drop. It smoothly ran over the tracks, moving through a lot of wide turns. At the end, it plummeted towards the water and almost seemed to glide across the water. As the train passed, water shot into the air due to the last car on the train having a piece that went into the water and caused it to spray up.

Finally, once they got off, they found that they only had an hour and a half left. They rode The Beast one more time before settling with walking around some. Roman really wanted to play some games for some reason, so they did just that. Virgil lost the two games he let himself be talked into playing. He was actually a little disappointed because there was a squid hat that he really wanted. He didn’t tell Roman about wanting one, though, especially as he watched Roman win a pink one for himself.

However, he was very surprised when he played the game he won the squid hat at again. He won another time and got another squid hat, this time blue. Virgil felt a little jealous until Roman approached him and placed the hat on his head.

“There!” Roman grinned, “Now we are squid buddies!”

“You didn’t ha-” Virgil started before Roman cut him off.

“Nonsense! I wanted to! I thought that you would look cute in it...and I was right! Besides, I felt bad that you didn’t get a prize too, so of course I needed to win one for you! What type of prince would I be if I didn’t?”

“Well, first of all, you’re not a prince-”

“Hahahaha that’s a funny joke, Panic! At the Everywhere!”

“Okay, whatever...but thanks…”

Roman grinned as he told Virgil that it was no problem. He then proceeded to drag him over to another game. It was one of those games where you had to shoot the water into the target to make a balloon pop. Roman beat a few people who were playing a few times and ended up getting the big prize. He picked out a giant stuffed Pikachu.

“Virgil,” Roman said slyly.

“What?” VIrgil questioned.

“I seem to have won this Pikachu here, but my room at home already has an abundance of stuff animals.”

“Of course it does.”

“I don’t think Pikachu would be very happy in my room. Would you mind keeping him for me?”

“Roman, you just spent a bunch of money playing that game for that prize!” Virgil yelled. “I can not take him because you won him. You’ve already given me this squid hat.”

“But Viiiirgiiiil, I specifically played that game to win Pikachu for yoooou!”

Virgil sighed, a deep blush on his face. “Are you really sure? I don’t want to owe you anything more.”

Roman gasped. “You don’t owe me anything! I really just wanted to win you another prize to make you happy. Please, Virgil, I really like you.”

“You-You do?”

Roman felt his own face turn pink. “Well, yeah. You’re really cute Virgil. I know that I just moved here and that we barely know each other, but I’ve noticed you from the first day of camp. I would love to hang out with you a lot more. This day was really fun and it made me realize how much I want to stay by your side.”

Virgil was shocked, “I-”

“Wait,” Roman interrupted, ruining the moment, “this has to be done in the perfect place. Come with me!”

Roman shoved Pikachu into Virgil’s arms, grabbed the emo’s hand, and pulled him towards the front of the park. They soon ended up in line to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower replica. Only the very top was available, not the lower 50 foot level. The reason for that was because a guy once tried to climb the elevator shaft from the 50 foot level during an after hours graduation party. He ended up falling and getting killed. Since then, the stairs that led to that level had been closed off and nobody was allowed up there. The elevator only went up to the top level.

Anyway, they took the elevator to the top and stood where they could overlook the park. The height didn’t get to Virgil like it did on the Windseeker because there were railings and they weren’t trapped on a seat suspended from a thin pole. It was very peaceful up there, save for the occasional roar of a roller coaster. It was hard to hear the laughter and screams from people riding them since they were so far up.

The night sky was very pretty. The moon was out and there were only a few clouds. The stars could not be seen very well due to light pollution, but they could imagine that they were still there. The different rides littered around Kings Island were lit up with bright, colored lights in order to make everything look beautiful.

“This is wonderful,” Virgil said in awe.

“Yeah, it is,” Roman agreed. Both of them were nervous to continue their conversation from earlier, so Virgil spoke up about a different matter first.

“Thank you for coming with me today. Usually I’d have to hang out with one of the groups of kids since they didn’t want me going off on my own. I knew Patton felt bad, but there was nothing he could do about it. Not even Logan, who the other volunteers are scared off, would force me to hang out with people who hate me. I would have had to skip out on all of these roller coasters and be bored all day.”

“It’s no problem at all,” Roman replied. “I don’t get why the others don’t like you. Virgil, you’re so amazing! I had so much fun today, but it wasn’t just because we were here. No, I had fun because I was with you.”

Virgil turned to face Roman, only to find him already staring at him.

“Did you mean it when you said that you liked me?” Virgil asked.

“Of course I did! You’re beautiful! You’re funny! You like some of the same things that I do! I like everything about you and it drives me crazy! I just want to be with you…”

Virgil was blushing hard now. He wanted to respond, but he didn’t seem to be able to muster up any words. He was afraid that he would say the wrong thing.

“Virgil?” Roman asked.

“Yeah?” Virgil whispered as best as he could.

“Can I kiss you?”

Now Virgil was really shocked. He had not been expecting that at all. He nodded after a moment, not wanting to be silent for too long in fear that Roman would take it negatively.

Roman grinned as he cupped Virgil’s cheek. He leaned in slowly before pressing his lips gently against the other boy’s. It wasn’t very deep or long. Actually, it was rather clumsy, but it was perfect to them.

When they pulled away, Roman dropped his hand from Virgil’s cheek in order to grab his hand instead. Virgil was careful not to drop his Pikachu as he listened to what Roman had to say.

“I hope that you believe me now when I tell you how much I like you. I really want to give us a try, but only if you want to. What do you say, sunshine? Would you be my boyfriend?”

“Of course, you idiot!” Virgil exclaimed as he nodded enthusiastically. “I like you too!”

Virgil was the one to take the initiative this time to kiss Roman. It was more passionate, more emotions coming through. Virgil was really happy because somebody finally wanted to be with him. Somebody finally liked him and not those who bully him. He felt joyful tears run down his cheeks as they pulled away again. Roman just smiled before kissing them away.

“But you can’t call me sunshine,” Virgil ordered.

“No promises, My Chemically Imbalanced Romance,” Roman teased.

“Ugh, whatever Sir Sing-a-Lot.”

“I like that one! Feel free to keep calling me that.”

Virgil just rolled his eyes and decided to shut his new boyfriend up with another kiss.

About 20 minutes before closing, they returned to the ground in order to head back to the bus. They didn’t want to be the ones to keep everyone else waiting. As they walked, their hands were intertwined with one another.

They got back to the bus with 10 minutes to spare. They paused before reaching it fully, turning back around to watch the fireworks that lit up the sky. Kings Island sure knew how to end a night. They looked at each other with smiles on their faces, sharing another small kiss in order to help remember that moment.

They knew that they would have a lot of annoying teenagers to ignore once they got on that bus. They also knew that the summer would be filled with those teens annoying them and making fun of their relationship. However, the most important thing they knew was that as long as they had each other, they could get through all of that and more.

Don’t be pissed at the messenger, but we thought you should know, it’s time to let go of Game of Thrones. HBO’s smash series is about to come to a thundering end, and we suggest that you prepare yourselves. However, this doesn’t mean the ladies of Westeros will vanish from our lives forever. The women of GoT have some fantastic new roles already lined up. Here’s what’s next for the women of Game of Thrones.

Though GoT is inspired by the George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and is generally beloved globally–the series has notoriously failed its women. During Season 8, Episode 4 –we all looked on in horror as Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), the only woman of color on the show was beheaded. (Shrugs in spoiler.) This isn’t the first time GoT has had some serious missteps with its female characters. From depictions of sexual violence to is glaring lack of diversity–Game of Thrones has broken many TV barriers while keeping women in a box.

Many women–including actress Jessica Chastain and director Ava DuVernay have slammed the series for its use of sexual violence as a character-building tool. Assessing Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) journey on the series, Chastain recently tweeted, “Rape is not a tool to make a character stronger. A woman doesn’t need to be victimized in order to become a butterfly.” She continued, “The #littlebird was always a Phoenix. Her prevailing strength is sole because of her. And her alone.”

After a near-decade-long journey on the series, for most of its leading ladies –the actresses are ready to embark on new (and hopefully more female-positive) projects. This is where we can find them next.

Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams was just a preteen when Season 1 of Game of Thrones began. As Arya Stark, Williams’ character’s arc has been one of the most revolutionary on the series. As a little girl–Arya was a precocious little fighter, more at ease using swords with her brothers than learning to sew or wearing a dress. Over the past eight seasons, we’ve watched Arya blossom (out of necessity) into a bold killer who will do anything for her family. All hail the Night King Slayer!

Williams auditioned for GoT because she wanted the money to buy a new laptop, but it looks like she’s ready to make a career out of acting. X-Men fans can catch Williams in The New Mutants which will debut on Aug. 2. She also just wrapped filming for the ’90s set film adaptation of the comic book series, The Owners. The movie is also set to star  Sylvester McCoy and  Rita Tushingham.

Sophie Turner

Like her on-screen sister, Sophie Turner had little acting experience before she stepped into Sansa Stark’s gown. When we first met the auburn-headed Stark–she was an exhausting and annoying little girl who was desperate to win the affections of a prince. Sansa did not live happily ever after. Instead, she was held captive by Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), raped and tortured by Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and manipulated by Petyr Baelish aka Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen). However, what Sansa did learn from all of her experiences was to play the game of thrones. As she told Littlefinger right before his execution, “I’m a slow learner, it’s true. But I learn.”

Though it’s a wrap for GoT, Turner is about to step into the shoes of another red-headed legend. She will reprise her role as Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix which is set to drop June 7. The newlywed first played Jean in 2016’s X-Men Apocalypse. Following Dark Pheonix, Turner will star in Jouri Smit’s Heavy.

Gwendoline Christie

So, we’re never going to forgive GoT for leaving Brienne of Tarth aka Brienne the Stallion standing in her housecoat in the biting cold begging Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) to pick her over his evil ass twin sister. It really boils our blood just thinking about it. To beg a man who has THREE (maybe four) kids with his twin sister! The GoT writers tried it. However, that’s neither here nor there.

Before she slayed as Ser Brienne on GoT, Gwendoline Christie was slowly making a name for herself in the entertainment industry. However, she exploded in 2012 after her first appearance on GoT. She’s already starred in the Star Wars franchise and the critically acclaimed mini-series, Top of the Lake. After she lays down Brienne sword, you can catch the 6′ 3″ legend as Jane Murdstone in The Personal History of David Copperfield opposite Tilda Swinton.  She will also appear in 2020’s The Friend with Dakota Johnson and Jason Seagal.

Emilia Clarke

Are y’all going to crumble when the Mother of Dragons dies? We aren’t. Admittedly we loved Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen for the first several seasons of Game of Thrones, but lately, homegirl has been working our last nerve. She’s clearly showing signs that she has some real anger issues and her lust for power certainly isn’t helping. Still–we will give Khalessi credit for her journey to try and take back her family’s throne.

Though her character is no longer our fav, we absolutely adore Emilia Clarke. She’s already delighted us in several franchise films including Terminator Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story. She also gave us all the feels in the movie-adaptation of, Me Before You. Up next, Clarke probably won’t be riding any more dragons, but you can catch her in Above Suspicion which tells the story of the first ever conviction for the murder of an FBI agent and the rom-com, Last Christmas opposite Henry Golding and Emma Thompson. Both flicks will debut in Winter 2019.

Lena Headey

One way or another, Cersei Lannister is about to hang up her crown on Game of Thrones. Whether she wins the throne or Dany and Jon Snow take her out –Lena Headey who has played the sinister queen since Season 1 is ready to move on. Headey isn’t a stranger to film or TV. Her career stretches back into the ’90s. While filming GoT— the British-born actress did some extensive voice work as well.

Following GoT you can catch Headey in The Flood, Gunpowder Milkshake opposite Angela Bassett and Paul Giamatti, and the movie Crooks. Hopefully, she’ll ditch that tragic blonde cut though. And honestly, we don’t know how we feel about seeing Headey in pedestrian clothing. God forbid her character is courteous and friendly.

Oh, Missandei, she had the best twist out in Westeros, and she and #BaeWorm were supposed to live out their days on some warm sandy beach somewhere away from the racists of Westeros. Nathalie Emmanuel’s days as Missandei may have come to an unsettling conclusion. However, Nathalie Emmanuel is just getting started. Before snagging a role on GoT back in Season 3–Emmanuel was known for her work on Hollyoaks. Since then she’s been in everything from The Fast and the Furious franchise to Maze Runner: The Death Curse.

Up next the vegan actress is saying farewell to HBO and hello to Hulu and Netflix. She is starring on two different forthcoming original series. You can spot her in Hulu’s Four Weddings and a Funeral written by Mindy Kaling. You can also see her in Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance which stars Helena Bonham Carter, Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe, Natalie Dormer as well as everyone else and their mama.

Carice van Houten

So… no one was that pressed when Melisandre took off her choker and withered away at the end of the Battle of Winterfell. We don’t know about you, but we’ve been ready to pull up on her since she burned Shireen Baratheon alive in Season 5. But we suppose we can’t hold that against Carice van Houten. She spoke to the New York Times about her character’s “timely” demise, “I was actually happy and quite sentimental when I read the script. I thought it could be a beautiful ending to this character.”

Like Lena Headey–van Houten has been a staple in entertainment since the ’90s. Post-GoT, she’ll be starring in Brian De Palma’s Domino opposite her former Game of Thrones co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as well as the thriller, Lost Girls and Love Hotels.

Amity Park

It was A Typical Normal Day In Amity Park. Kids heading to School People heading to work.Ghosts attacking, What!.? that's not normal?! you ask. Well, it is to me you see Amity Park is the most haunted city in the world.How do we protect ourselves you say?

Well we don't protect ourselves you see Danny Phantom does who revealed himself to being Danny Fenton the son of professional ghost hunters ironic, isn't it? He saved the planet from the Disasteroid and revealed his secret to the world. So let's see how he's doing.

Danny's Pov

Sam and I were walking to my house after our date at the Amity Bowling Alley, I won by two. It was Friday so that meant date night for us.It's just not as private since I revealed myself after the Disasteroid Incident. The Camera crew of Amity Park News was A few feet ahead of us. Which meant the Paparazzi and Fans weren't far behind. I grabbed the mail As we entered Fenton Works. Scheming through the mail I noticed A specific one with A Chinese symbol of A Dragon on it. It was addressed to my Mother. Sam looked at me concerned, I must have spaced out. ''What is it? she asks, ''A Letter addressed to my Mom.''What's that Emblem on the Envelope?. ''A Dragon I say still examining the Envelope, she gave me A bewildered look.'' I don't understand either maybe I should give this to my Mom and ask Questions later. Sam nodded in agreement and we headed down to the Lab.

Jake's POV

''Yo Mom what's with All the Packing! I asked as I entered the house and stared at all the Clothing around the Living room.''We have A Family reunion at Aunt Kathy's my annoying goody-goody little sister Hailey said glancing up from her book. ''Whaaaat, I say glancing at my Mom. ''Now Jake I know you don't care for your Aunt Kathy or cousin Gregory.''Which I quite frankly agree with you about. '' But It would be A good gesture, besides certain family members I haven't seen In A long time will hopefully be there.''Who Mommy? my sister says in her little perky annoying voice. ''My Sister's Maddie Fenton, Miriam Sparks, and Alisha Wu.'' I haven't seen them in years. '' If you saw them you wouldn't think we were related. She said chuckling slightly.''We never told you this but your Grandmother was American. ''She was born here not one ounce of Chinese in her blood. ''Wow Mommy! that's interesting ! ''right Jake? said, Hailey. ''Ya whateves,' I said.''When are we leaving? ''Next Saturday she tells me. ''Do you know if they have any kids?Hailey asks our Mom with excitement in her voice. ''Probably honey but maybe around Jake's age. I saw my Eleven-year-old sis bow her head in sorrow before I said goodbye. ''Alright I'm gonna head over to Gramps shop see yaz. I tell her before heading out then Dragoning up and heading to Gramps shop.

Danny's POV

'' Mom? you down here?! I yelled down the kitchen stairs that led down to my Parent's Lab. '' Yes Sweety. I hear her say. As we head down to the Lab, where we saw her in her usual Jumpsuit with Hood and goggles on, tinkering with the Spector deflector. I shuddered hoping she modified it to work with me than against me. ''Uh?Mom? I yelled over Mom's fire flare. ''Sam and I just got here and I got the mail and theirs one that really got our attention! I finally got my Mom's attention when she stopped what she was doing and took off her hood to look at me with those Amethyst eyes. ''What got your attention? she asked. ''This letter it's addressed to you with some Dragon symbol on it. I said as I handed her the letter. .We waited while she opened and read the letter her eyes bulged as if something horrible happened. ''What's wrong Mom? I asked after two minutes of A very awkward silence. ''It's A letter from my Cousin Kathy theirs A Wu Family Reunion Next Monday and since it's Spring break we have time to pack but Knowing Susan she Probably already started packing. ''Really Should we start Packing? I said looking at her curiously. ''Yes it's Next Saturday.'' I'll tell your Sister when she gets home. ''Well Sam and I are going to go meet Tucker for patrol I said. ''Alright sweety Oh you still need to tell me and your Father how you became Half Ghost. ''I will after Patrol alright? I told her, ''Sure sweety she says. ''Bye Mom I said before grabbing Sam by the hand and leading her up the stairs. ''Bye Mrs. Fenton, Sam says as we head out the front door.

We were ready for the Reunion we just needed to pack all of Gramps Magical Mojo.''Yo G, I said while picking up A box.''What'sThe Deal with the Reunion! all of A sudden it's messing with my Schedule Rose and I were going to go on A Date? ''Young Dragon you and I both know that you as the American Dragon has many responsibilities even if it's sometimes not Dragon related. G told me.

''Wait wait wait fairies? as in this size fairies. I said demonstrating An inch the size of A toothpick. ''Well no human size but she can miniaturize. ''Did they have Children? I asked. ''They did Maddie and Jack has two kids Jasmine and Daniel Fenton. ''Really? ''Yes Jasmine is seventeen and Daniel is fifteen. ''Miriam soon left the Palace and Married King Oritel of the planet Sparks. '' ''Whaaaaat?'' King, Queen? ''I'll miss you. Sam tells me as we were packing the R.V to head to the Airport to go to New York. ''I'll miss you too, I tell her. ''You sure you and Tuck can handle AmityPark without me for the weekend? ''Of course, Go mingle with your Family. ''Alright I love you. she tells me. '' I love you to tell her. She then grabs the collar of my shirt and gives me the most passionate kiss I had ever felt from her since we started our relationship.

''See you soon. she tells me. ''See you, I say getting into the R.V sitting next to my Sister, Just as the R.V started up and we rode off out of AmityPark heading to the Airport to head to New York to meet my Mom's side of the Family. I hope they don't think I'm odd because of my powers. Because I know they heard the News after I saved the Planet.

Jake's POV

''I'll miss you. My Girlfriend Rose tells me. ''I'll miss you too I tell her.

She gives me A kiss and leaves. ''Come on Jakaroo my Dad tells me If you want to meet your new Cousins you better hurry and get in the car. ''Dad? ''You Just Found out six months ago that you married into A Family of Magical Reptiles.''You really want to go diving head first into it. '' I mean they're probably going to freak when they find out you know. ''Mom what about the Dragon Council? ''Well Jake I just don't know she tells me. Awwww Maaaannn.

Little Did the Ghost Boy and the American Dragon knew is that Prince Aragon and the Dark Dragon would team up to defeat The American Dragon and the Infamous Danny Phantom.

Because of the anticipated release of Justice League on Friday November 17, I’ve decided to write reviews of all of the movies that make up the DC Extended Universe so far. There have been a lot of talks about how long this franchise will last, but as a comic book fan, and huge lover of movies, I never want movies to be bad. I’m hoping that it’ll be amazing. Cast & Crew

The director of Man of Steel was Zack Snyder, whose work includes films that I enjoyed such as ‘Watchmen’ in 2009 and ‘Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole’ in 2010, as well as films that I didn’t enjoy so much such as ‘Dawn of the Dead’ in 2004, and ‘Sucker Punch’ in 2011. The film that in my mind, he’s the most known for is ‘300’, which while visually amazing, was more of a meh kind of film for me. He has since directed the sequel to this film ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, and most of ‘Justice League’ before having to step away due to personal reasons.

Man of Steel was written by David S. Goyer, based on the story that he and Christopher Nolan wrote. Nolan’s work as a writer includes ‘Memento’, his ‘Batman’ trilogy, and ‘Inception’ prior to working on this film. He has since wrote ‘Interstellar’ in 2014, and ‘Dunkirk’ in 2017. Goyer’s previous writing jobs includes the ‘Blade’ trilogy from 1998 – 2004, working with Nolan on the ‘Batman’ films previously mentioned as well as the sequel ‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ in 2011 prior to working on Man of Steel. He’s since wrote the ‘Constantine’ television show, as well as ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ in 2016. He was recently announced to be one of the writers for the ‘Green Lantern Corps’ that will be coming out in 2020.

Review

The character of Clark Kent / Kal – El was played by Cooper Timberline, Dylan Sprayberry and Henry Cavill, with the latter also playing Superman. I feel like all three of them did a good job at playing the Clark Kent character, and I was surprised at how consistent they were in terms of character. Cavill’s acting in the role of Kal – El was rough at first, with some very wooden delivery of some lines, however that could also be the script or the direction that he got. I enjoyed the portrayal that we got, even if it was a ‘darker’ and ‘broodier’ version of what he is supposed to be, I still thought it was well done at the end. Cavill’s Superman still needs some work, but seems to have a lot of potential, and I was pleased with the improvements in the character in the follow up film.

The character of Lois Lane was played by Amy Adams, in which she did an alright job with what she was given. I didn’t enjoy what they did with her character overall, but I will go into more detail about that further below. I feel like Adams was a good choice for the role that they put her in, but didn’t give off the Lois Lane vibe that I remembered from the few comic books that I read of Superman(read both Marvel and DC as a kid, but enjoyed Marvel more).

Michael Shannon as General Zod was a good choice in my mind for the role, as he demands the attention when on screen, and you need someone with a presence to portray Zod. I feel like the character could have been used a lot better, but from I enjoyed the performance that we got from Shannon. It demanded more than what we ended up getting.

The Kent parents were played by Diane Lane and Kevin Costner, who I feel was really well cast in those roles. I would have prefered a lot more from Costner’s character, and the way he died was just stupid, but from the acting standpoint, I really enjoyed that Lane was able to capture Martha Kent’s essence of trying to connect with Clark on the emotional level, while Jonathan Kent was the moral compass of doing what’s right at the right time. I didn’t enjoy the fact that they made him say the word ‘maybe’ when asked if Clark should have let his classmates die.

The Kryptonian parents Lara Lor-Van played by Ayelet Zurer, and Jor – El who was portrayed by Russell Crowe was a mixed bag of emotions for me throughout this film. I loved everything about Zurer’s performance from the flashbacks to Krypton, and the struggle to send her child away for a chance for survival. It’s something that I wish would be explored more in the future, with the A.I. Jor – El talking about his wife to their son. Russell Crowe’s performance was a problem for me in this role. I don’t think he fit the role of Jor – El, whatsoever, and I didn’t like that they made him capable of beating General Zod in a fist fight. That was one of the problems with certain characters in the film.

One thing that was really unexpected in the movie, was that it opens with the birth of Kal – El, literally Lara in labour, the first time that a natural birth happened on Krypton for centuries. I enjoyed what they did with the movie, in a way to make Kal – El ‘special’ in that sense, however I really wish that they will elaborate on the Codex. That is something that would be very interesting if ever they were going to have a new Krypton eventually in the universe, however I feel like they’ve already forgotten about it.

Seeing Krypton was absolutely amazing. I thought that the scenery and the animals in that sequence was very much inspired by James Cameron’s movie ‘Avatar’. The cinematography in general for this movie was beautiful. I thought that the way that they captured Krypton, Smallville, and the Arctic was extremely well done. It’s one of the better looking films in the past 5 years, and part of that quality is thanks to the cinematographer of the film – Amir Mokri. His work includes ‘Coyote Ugly’ from 2000, ‘Bad Boys 2’ in 2003 and ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ in 2011 prior to Man of Steel.

The score for this film was put together by one of the most well known and fantastic composer since the early 2000s. Hans Zimmer‘s work has sadly been given a lot of slack in recent years for the loud ‘BWAM’ that marketing people love putting in trailers, which have become annoying, I have to admit. In my opinion, his work is on the same level in terms of quality and how memorable they are as other great movie score composers such as John Williams, Howard Shore and Danny Elfman. Zimmer’s work in this film was strong, hopeful, and sometimes inspiring while still having those epic moments that is required in big budget films.

Movie scores are what I listen to while I’m working at my desk, or writing these reviews, or when I was studying while in school. I just looked at my ‘instrumental’ playlist that I’ve had and been adding to it for the last 10 years and Hans Zimmer has 61 out of the 250 songs on that playlist. His work includes such soundtracks as ‘The Lion King’, ‘The Prince of Egypt’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’, ‘The Last Samurai’, ‘August Rush’, ‘Sherlock Holmes’, and ‘Inception’. I really enjoyed the music in this movie, and I know that a lot of people were disappointed when the Superman theme was never incorporated into the score, however I feel like Zimmer added a sense of wonder and grandness that was needed for this version.

The flashbacks in Man of Steel was very much hit and miss for me. I feel like the two younger version of Clark Kent did a good job in their portrayals, and I was happy to see that they were providing some backstory to who he is, while at the same time not lingering too much on it.

One of the stupidest death scenes that I’ve ever watched was the flashback scene of Jonathan Kent being swallowed up by the tornado (twister, not entirely sure of the difference, if you know, tell me in the comments below) while telling Clark to stay where he was, and stupidly sacrificing himself. I feel like Clark could have easily saved him, but they wanted to make the film ‘darker’ and make Clark go on this long and arduous journey to find out what his place on Earth is, and to find out what kind of man he wants to become, but I was pissed off at that death scene.

One of the bigger mistakes in this film was that Lois Lane was made to be an integral piece of the film. She was involved in everything, and while I know that she’s a reporter and loves getting information, the fact that she took a picture of cliff face, and saw a man enough to know to zoom in, then can somehow scale a mountain, and thinks she can escape the authorities after being called is funny. I feel like they should have kept her as a supporting character rather than one of the leads in the movie. I’m not happy that they made her find out that Superman is Clark Kent right away, as there’s a lot less in which they can explore and do in further films.

A small problem with the movie, is the magical appearance of the suit, with the crest of the house of El on it, that just happened to be on a spaceship that crashed on Earth 18 000 years ago, while also having one of the passengers on that ship survive and get out of their sleeping pod. Where are they? I don’t think we’ll ever find out.

One of the most amazing things in the whole movie was that they were so casual with the destruction of Metropolis, and causing so much damage to the city, and they cry out that Superman is a hero. Yes, it wasn’t entirely his fault, but from the look of it, he did very little to save anyone, going as far as throwing Zod towards buildings full of people.

I enjoyed the nice touches of the greater plans that they might or might not have been planning towards the DCEU. Including the Wayne satellites, and the LuthorCorp trucks.\

The most controversial part of the movie – the death of General Zod, is one of the most hated things about this movie, and I’m still upset about this to this day. Superman does not kill, yes, he’s killed Zod once in the comics, but that was one story that they had out of thousands of different stories. I feel like the circumstances of the death was stupid as well, I would have much prefered if Zod had gone into the Phantom Zone with everyone else when the ship collided with the World Engine. It would have been a much satisfying ending, rather than the whole air punching fight scene that caused so much damage to the city and to the Superman character as a whole.

Overall, I feel like this was a solid film that had amazing music and cinematography, a little shaky on the characters and the acting, with an ending that is extremely divisive amongst the fans. I love Cavill’s performance as Superman, but there’s still a lot of room to grow. At the end of the day, I don’t have much more to say about this film, and I would end up giving this movie a final score of 7.5/10.
