It’s time to explore the final Hammer Horror film of the 1970s, To the Devil… a Daughter (1976). [Note: The mystery comedy film The Lady Vanishes (1979) would drop and… vanish… in 1979.] To the Devil… a Daughter has the reputation of putting the final nail into Hammer’s filmmaking coffin. The quality and success of Hammer productions spiraled throughout the decade as the landscape of horror films changed – especially after The Exorcist (1973). Surprisingly, the film is much better than how the Grue Crew remembers it and how its reputation proceeds it. That is, up until its abrupt and head-scratching ending and that strange devil puppet. If you know, you know. Check out what the Grue Crew thinks of the film directed by Peter Sykes and featuring Christopher Lee, Richard Widmark, and Nastassja Kinski.
At the time of this writing, To the Devil… a Daughter is available to stream from Peacock and PlutoTV as well as various PPV from Amazon and Fandango At Home. To the Devil… a Daughter is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray from SCREAM Factory.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Jeff, will be Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (1973), an ABC Movie of the Week starring Kim Darby, Jim Hutton, William Demarest, and Barbara Anderson. Grue Believer Lone Wolf suggested this flick. Woot!
We want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: comment on the site or email the Decades of Horror 1970s podcast hosts at [email protected].

I will be putting the name shown to me in game, and only put names in English so I apologize to any foreign Trainers I had to leave out due to unable to write your name in your language, but I love you all the same! Names have been wrote down EXACTLY as I saw them in game, so yes, these are what people names themselves. Enjoy! ✨

Love Is Love: Passion and Art Make for Potent ' A Man of No Importance' by R-S Theatrics
Love Is Love: Passion and Art Make for Potent ‘ A Man of No Importance’ by R-S Theatrics
By Lynn Venhaus Managing Editor Passion drives the characters and the R-S Theatrics production of a miraculous little musical that has something to say. The title “A Man of No Importance” is a misnomer, for Alfie Byrne is a remarkable human being whose significance is mirrored in the faces of his fellow Dubliners. In a blockbuster musical theater climate that regularly serves feel-good fluff…

The Hamiltonian Horse Race At The Meadowlands
Hambletonian Horse Race 2020
Burke (as Burke Racing Stable) co-owns Southwind Frank (Muscle Hill - Flawless Lindy) with Weaver Bruscemi LLC, birthday boy Gene Kurzrok's Our Horse Cents Stables and J And T Silva Stables LLC. Racing Horse Hamiltonian was sired by and out of Baha Men, Hamiltonian is a 11 year old Bay Gelding horse owned by B A Hamilton & Mrs A G Williams and trained by K W Marshment. Find out more with our Thoroughbred Horse Profile Directory and Horse Racing Results. The horse was to race under his former owners' names the rest of the year, with Bertmark splitting earnings and expenses. Armbro Goal earned $578,400 with his Hambletonian victory, Firm Tribute took home second money of $289,200 on the basis of his third place finish in the first heat and his second place spot in the second heat. Hambletonian Stakes, also called Hambletonian Trot, annual American horse race for three-year-old trotters, one of harness racing ’s most widely known events. The Hambletonian was first held in 1926 at Syracuse, New York. It was later moved to Goshen, New York, in 1957 to Du Quoin, Illinois, and in 1981 to Meadowlands (New Jersey) Racetrack.
The Hambletonian stakes is a prestigious American harness race, named in honor of Hambletonian 10 a foundation sire of the Standardbred horse breed, also known as the 'Father of the American Trotter.' The Hambletonian is held annually for three-year-old trotting Standardbreds. It is the most coveted North American race for trotters; among races for pacers, only the Little Brown Jug is as prestigious. The Hambletonian is the first, and most prestigious, event in the United States Trotting Triple Crown races. The Hambletonian is currently run at Meadowlands Racetrack in August.
Hambletonian 10, or Rysdyk's Hambletonian, (May 5, 1849-1876) was an American trotter and sire who profoundly influenced the sport of harness racing. The stallion was born in Sugar Loaf, New York, on 5 May 1849. Hambletonian has been inducted into the Immortals category of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame.

Hambletonian 10 bred by Jonas Seely, Jr. on his farm at Sugar Loaf in Orange County, New York. He was sired by Abdallah who was a grandson of the hugely influential Thoroughbred sire, Messenger. Abdallah was ugly in body and temperament, so much so that he was sold to a fish peddlar for $5. Hambletonian's dam was known as the Charles Kent Mare or the 'Kent Mare.' Hambletonian was thrice inbred to Messenger, considered a foundation sire of Standardbreds.
Seeley's hired hand, William Rysdyk, cared for the mare and foal. Rysdyk became so attached to the pair and was so convinced that the foal would someday be great that he asked to purchase them. Seeley finally agreed, and for $125 William Rysdyk took his prize possessions home.
Hambletonian had an unusual build, being low at the withers (15.1 ¼ hh) but high at the croup (15.3 ¼). This length of hind leg did, however, provide a great deal of thrust with each stride, and he passed this on to all his get.
Career
Hambletonian 10, as he was registered, made his first public appearance at the age of six months at the nearby Orange County Fair in Goshen. He caused quite a sensation and horsemen started referring to him as 'Rysdyk's Abdallah colt.' This colt began his stud career at age two when Rysdyk allowed him to cover four mares. Meanwhile another son of Abdallah, Abdallah Chief, owned by Seeley C. Roe, was looming as a competitor for the local stallion honors. Roe had nothing but contempt for Hambletonian, and claimed he'd never be a trotter, only a show horse. This issue was settled in 1852 at Long Island's Union Course. Hambletonian and Abdallah Chief were hitched to skeleton wagons with their owners driving. Three minutes and three seconds after the start, Hambletonian crossed the finish line ahead of his rival. Roe still wasn't satisfied and insisted on another race. A time trial was held. Abdallah Chief went the mile in 2:55 1/2. Then Roe watched Hambletonian, in what would be the only time trial of his career, trot the mile in 2:48 1/2. Rysdyk then placed Hambletonian at stud in Chester and bred him to local mares for a fee upwards of $500. The horse's reputation quickly grew as a sire of speed, and Rysdyk made a modest fortune from the horse's services. In his years at stud, 1,331 foals were sired. From four of Hambletonian's sons (George Wilkes, Dictator, Happy Medium, and Electioneer), the lineage of virtually all American Standardbred horses can be traced.
Death
At age 27 on March 27, 1876, Hambletonian died. Both he and his owner, who had died in 1870, were buried in Chester, N.Y. Seventeen years after Hambletonian's death a granite monument, the gift of many people who had fond memories of the horse, was placed over his grave on Hambletonian Avenue.
Legacy
In 24 seasons at stud, between 1851 and 1875, Hambletonian produced about 1,335 foals. Through four Hambletonian sons, 99 percent of all of the harness racing horses in North America today trace their bloodline to him.
In the 1860s, one of his sons, Dexter, trotted the mile in 2:17.25-a record. Dexter was immediately bought for $25,000 by a Robert Bonner for his own private driving pleasure. A rigidly moral man, Bonner did not approve of racing or betting, so no one will ever know if Dexter could have trotted even faster. But ever since, no horse lacking lines to Hambletonian in their pedigree has ever done better.
The Hambletonian Stakes race, the most prestigious harness race for trotters in North America, is named in honor of Hambletonian 10.

The Hamiltonian Horse Race At The Meadowlands
The Hambletonian Stakes is a major American harness race, named in honor of Hambletonian 10, a foundation sire of the Standardbred horse breed, also known as the 'Father of the American Trotter.' The Hambletonian is held annually for three-year-old trotting Standardbreds. It is the first event in the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Trotters. The Hambletonian is run at Meadowlands Racetrack (New Jersey) on the first Saturday in August.(1)

Hambletonian Horse Race 2020
The Hambletonian first took place at the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY in 1926. The race switched from Syracuse to Lexington, KY for the 1927 and 1929 races, however, because of rainouts. Starting in 1930, Good Time Park in Goshen, NY hosted the race until 1956 with the exception of 1943. That year, The Hambletonian was raced at Empire City Race Track, which became Yonkers Raceway in 1950, because of wartime gas rationing. The Du Quoin State Fair in Du Quoin, IL gained the rights to host the race in 1957 and held on to it until 1980. Since 1981, the race has been at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, NJ

Live Picks: 7/25
Tumblr media
Screaming Females
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Americana, R&B, punk, hardcore, improvisational jazz--take your pick.
John Paul White, Lincoln Hall
Even if you were never a fan of The Civil Wars or John Paul White’s post-band solo career, you have to appreciate the guy. He co-founded Single Lock Records and helped expand its reach beyond music of The Shoals, releasing great albums by Nicole Atkins, Erin Rae, and Donnie Fritts. Plus, he co-wrote two of the best songs on the most recent Lindi Ortega album. Tonight, he may play only his music and non-White adjacent covers, but if you go, trust that you’ll be seeing one of the best Americana figures today.
Louisiana singer-songwriter Caleb Elliott opens.
Anderson .Paak, House of Vans
We previewed Anderson. Paak & The Free Nationals’ show last month at Huntington Bank Pavilion:
“Executive produced by Dr. Dre, Anderson .Paak’s Ventura is a quick follow-up to the disappointing Oxnard that’s solid, but safe. From the get-go, the skill at hand, in both the singing, rapping, and instrumentation takes reigns from the lyrics or themes. It’s a bold move to open your album with a song featuring a typically dexterous and overwhelmingly awesome verse from none other than Andre 3000, and .Paak’s slow and smooth delivery doesn’t quite keep the song in check. Overall, the record sees him at various stages of relationships, wanting a lover to come back to him on the opener, wanting to ignite a flame on blue eyed soul jam 'Make It Better' (which doesn’t use Smokey Robinson nearly enough), and questioning a woman on the freaky keyboard funk-laden, two part 'Reachin’ 2 Much'. On 'Chosen One', he wants a woman that loves him for him. On 'Twilight', he tells a lover that she guides him through the darkness–all you really care about is the arpeggio horn line and retro Pharrell beat. On closer 'What Can We Do?', he contemplates his next relationship–all you really care about is the mere presence of the late, great Nate Dogg. This is standard stuff with a great cast making the most they can out of the material.
Ventura succeeds best when .Paak gets creative with the format or delves into his sociopolitical perspective. The short, funny 'Good Heels' is a conversation disguised as a slow jam, he and Jazmine Sullivan contemplating how she’s gonna sneak in and out of the house to get her stuff back when his girlfriend is coming home. On 'Yada Yada', .Paak expresses his gratitude at being able to make music in general, let alone the type of music he wants to make: “Chicken wings and sushi, I’ve gotten used to the perks / Narrowly escapin’ the holy war on the turf.” And the political funk of 'King James' pays tribute to the biggest star in the NBA of the past couple decades, someone who also happens to be a philanthropist and advocate for the black community at large, someone for .Paak to look up to and aspire to be like.
Too often, though, .Paak’s grand realizations come in the form of thoughts like on 'Winners Circle': “If I know that I can get it, then I’ve already had it” isn’t really deserving of any sort of praise, despite its honesty and newness for .Paak. Songs of devotion and love might be novel for him, too, but the fact that he’s overshadowed by his guests make you wonder whether he’ll ever return to the greatness of an album like Malibu.”
Psych soul singer Kadhja Bonet opens, and .Paak’s band The Free Nationals perform a set of their own in between. Up at the site will also be an art installation by Dewey Saunders.
Screaming Females, Beat Kitchen
We previewed Screaming Females’ Lincoln Hall show last March:
“We’ve always loved Screaming Females, having last seen them at Music Frozen Dancing 2017, where we wrote that they stole the show even from that year’s headliners, METZ. We’re even more hype on their headlining show at Lincoln Hall because their new album All At Once is the best music they’ve ever made, highlighted by the stop-start thrill ride 'Glass House', far out, two-part 'Chamber of Sleep', and barn-burner 'Step Outside'. They’ll play a lot from All At Once and perhaps a couple from their other truly great album, 2012′s Steve Albini-produced Ugly.”
They may play a new song tonight at Beat Kitchen.
Punk bands Bad Cop/Bad Cop & Dark Thoughts open.
Terror, Bottom Lounge
The oft-touring Terror is one of five bands from Pure Noise records on this current showcase tour. We previewed their set at Subterranean last fall:
“Sure, Total Retaliation’s got its fair share of lyrical head-scratchers ('Execution / Exile / Disillusion / No trial!’). But a song like 'Resistant to the Changes’ is Terror turning a new leaf for the positive. ‘I will never take these words for granted,’ Vogel sings, 'I came here to erase those years / You gave me a place to come home / And I will never walk this world alone.’ Finally, the walls have fallen.”
Orange County hardcore punks Stick to Your Guns headline. Canada’s Counterparts, Long Island’s Sanction, and Delaware’s Year of the Knife also open.
Rempis/Abrams/Ra, Elastic Arts
In preparation for their performance at the Chicago Jazz Festival mainstage, saxophonist Dave Rempis, Joshua Abrams (this time on bass), and drummer Avreeayl Ra will play two improvised sets tonight at Elastic Arts.

New Look Sabres: New Coach 2K19
Tumblr media
New Look Sabres! How I miss you so! It’s only been a month and a half, but I really enjoyed writing New Look Sabres and this little break is actually wearing on me. I have a need to blog about the Sabres! I have such a need to blog that you may have noticed I redid the whole blog this appears on and even broadened what I can blog about in terms of hockey. All that is well and good, but nothing beats my good old warhorse, my sweet sweet New Look Sabres! I couldn’t wait for the Draft or the Schedule release, I had to write this: a bonus blog! A bonus blog if anything in Sabres fandom right now can give you that rush of energy that a bonus does. If I am the only thing giving you that bonus rush then so be it. Luckily, I’m writing this mainly because I don’t think I’m the only reason you maybe excited about the Sabres right now. We have a new coach! I touched on Housley’s departure in the Season Retrospective but that was a whirlwind and what feels like forever ago in yet another offseason the Sabres have failed to make the postseason. There’s a new guy in Housley’s old job on the bench and his name is Ralph Krueger! The news first arose over the weekend when Elliotte Friedman first sounded the inside alert that Krueger had rocketed to the front of the pack for the Sabres Head Coaching vacancy. Then he sounded twice as sure it would happen on a radio hit on WGR550 Monday morning. It turned into the waiting game again until Tuesday Night when Friedman went on popular Canadian sports show Tim and Sid to say he thought it was more or less imminent, in his words: it could happen as soon as tomorrow (Wednesday). Then came the bomb from the king of all hockey insiders Bob McKenzie: Ralph Krueger will be named the next head coach of Buf. That’s about as official as you can get without the confirmation tweet from the team account but that came Wednesday morning. It’s official: Ralph Krueger is the 19th Head Coach of the Buffalo Sabres.
Before we get into any of the dynamics of this hiring let’s just reflect on how we’ve not had a boring named coach since… Ted Nolan? Think about it: Dan Blysma, Phil Housley, Ralph Krueger. All great names to tell you wife to her bepuzzlement. Anyway, if you know nothing about this guy let me just say one word to you about him. Culture. No just kidding, we’ve been tortured enough in Buffalo; but that was a part of the interview apparently. No, the word on Krueger is he is an open mind. He’s not a math wiz so he’s not an analytics darling but by all accounts he’s far from turned off to it either. He’s a reliable leader but also a tactician not moored to coaching beliefs that haven’t worked since the 1980s. The word communication came a lot in the Press Conference too: communication with his bosses and the players under him. He is apparently such a good motivator of this generation of hockey players that he has helped groups overachieve their expectations time and time again. We could use a little bit of that for the Sabres couldn’t we? Believe it or not, players vouch for him. Imagine that! Tomas Vanek was excited for the Sabres to get him. Tomas Vanek. Let that sink in. Enough about the intangible stuff that is only talk until its proven on the ice next season, what is his actual record? Well, both of his most recent hockey coaching stints were with teams that were not expected to do great. He coached the Edmonton Oilers during the last lockout and did pretty well with the pre-McDavid club. His record there is nothing to gawk at but there are some layers to that onion that end up making you cry tears of joy. He coached Team Europe in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey all the way to the Final with a squad that was basically Leon Draisaitl, Anze Kopitar and a dozen other guys you didn’t realize were Europeans until you read their names on the roster. Just like with the Oilers he coached the team beyond expectations, this time he had a good enough team to give Canada a run for their money. He does special things with groups others see as nothing special and that fits so wonderfully into my narrative on the Sabres that I can’t help but be excited. It’s also worth noting he built a dynasty club team in Switzerland in the 1990s. He’s different than your average NHL coach for several reasons but the biggest and best maybe that he’s not a member of the old boy’s club that seems to still dominate hires in this league. For a Front Office that looked likely to hire Jacques Martin at one point and interviewed Lindy Ruff apparently, that is a huge, a giant confidence booster for fans who were prepared for a doomsday scenario this offseason.
Jason Botterill still has to have a big summer once he gets back from the World Championships, but this is one big sign he’s got his head on straight. Botts wasn’t afraid to tap the shoulder of a guy whose been an executive in the English Premier League for the last several years and that shows some big balls. He’ll need big balls to sign Skinner and do the roster surgery we’ve heard about. That’s right, he’s been in the Premier League as President of Southampton FC. If you got a problem with soccer that’s your flaw but it’s worth noting if he was rumored to come back to the NHL it would be for a Front Office job like President of Hockey Operations. In the presser after the hiring Botterill said the conversations with him were always about being Head Coach. I resist the idea Botts hired his successor, that’s a bit overzealous, but I speculate he was told if the shit doesn’t work again next season for the Sabres he can be bounced upstairs. This guy literally wrote a book on building a successful sports franchise so if that Armageddon comes I am fully prepared for Ralph Krueger to be our Bruce Willis and blow that asteroid to kingdom come! The key here is that he is 59. If things go good enough for him to be around more than two years he’ll probably retire from the job… and get bounced upstairs… ok we’ll sit on that idea. Only games will tell next season if this guy has the stuff, but Krueger is checking all my boxes. There is so much to like about this guy and its hard to really lend credence to individual pieces of information except this idea that he’s well respected around the Hockey world. Other coaches and players, like our old boy Tomas Vanek, vouch for this guy and that feels different from the last few years here. It looks like Chris Taylor will stay in his role and Steve Smith will stay on as an assistant coach. Otherwise you can look forward to Krueger bringing in some other new faces.
Perhaps a known face is what I’m most excited about looking forward here. Understandably Jeff Skinner was supposedly waiting to see who the Coach would be before signing. There are different reports out there locally and nationally but Botts himself said he would meet with Skinner and his agent again after returning from the World Championships later this month. I can’t help but say hurry up. Jeff Skinner is our Stanley Cup this offseason but when I say that I mean it more rhetorically. Getting him to stick around is really the break even point for this offseason. Look out for Botts to make moves before, during and after the draft. He set a bar in the hire announcement press conference that I will not let go of for months to come: “We should be in the discussion for Playoffs.” That’s as close to a guarantee as you’re going to get. Krueger’s phrasing was even more aggressive on that. The work starts now to make sure you got a roster that can do that. I for one am absolutely psyched for what might happen. Like, share and comment on this blog and keep your eyes open for non-Sabres content on this blog as well. I like to think this is a buffet now. Either way don’t expect another New Look Sabres post until June. If Jeff Skinner signs between now and then just know that I am on Cloud 9 about that. Let’s Go Buffalo!
Thanks for reading.
P.S. I didn’t bring up the Rochester Americans because I’m still very much mad at them for getting swept in a postseason they could’ve made the Finals. I’m not sorry.
