Indigenous Men.

This is a rant but but me simp for a minute yall please.

Now, as a child who grew up in an indigenous household, I’ve had my share of exposure to fictional indigenous men.

(That’s maybe why I write fanfic about tall, blue, indigenous men but idk it’s just a theory.)

I was little when I first watched avatar but lemme tell yall one thing.

I was not looking at Mr. Sully. No sir.

You know who I was looking at?

C’mon now Mr. Thick slick and handsome don’t act like you don’t see me 🫶🏽🤭

I was down so BAD for this man. I used to draw him with my little box of crayons when I was a kid and pretend we got married.

He’s a warrior.

He’s strong.

Hes so fucking hot guys you can’t even fight me on this one.

It always kinda made me mad as a kid when a character choose someone else over the clear, green flagged indigenous male character.

Now, Neytiri is NOT an example of this. She never loved Tsu’tey romantically, and Jake was a better choice for her of course.

But you know what movie pissed me off the MOST when it came to this trope?

Now I could spend hours talking about this movie and how incredibly fucked up it is. But we’re not gonna go there rn.

(That movie cover actually brings back so many memories for me. We had VHS when I was a kid and we used to draw with whiteboard markers on the vhs box movie covers and make fun of John smith.)

I watched this movie for one sole purpose when I was little.

And no. It wasn’t for John Smith’s tea drinking pudding ass.

IT WAS FOR HIM

I used to get so peeved at ‘Pocahontas’ (her name was Matoaka.)

This was the man of 8 year old me’s DREAMS and we’re going after Mr. Ken the Colonizer!?

A couple of things I noticed from my last rewatch:

- when Neytiri fires the first shot when the kids are captured by the recoms in the forest, QUARITCH GOES STRAIGHT FOR SPIDER and reaches his hand out to SHOVE SPIDER DOWN OUT OF TJE LINE OF FIRE plz god help me

- I’ve always noticed this but haven’t really seen anybody talking about it - Spider totally has an Australian accent when he runs out of the shack saying “I’m just going to the village!”

- When spider is captured he is covered in mud from the fall down the bank, like, he is so dirty. But in the next shot of him throwing the chair around he is… clean. I thought this was probably just a continuity error BUT: spider doesn’t have either of his two armbands on in the interrogation scenes, which adds credence to my new theory that that he likely had a SJOWER at the rda before Quaritch talked to him/he went in the mind machine

- Lo’ak calls Quaritch vonvä when he shows him his fingers which the subtitles translate as ‘buttholes’, but wiki says can also mean ‘dickheads’ (I find this satisfying)

- the exopacks that Sec-Ops use are sleeker than the ones the humans at the Omatikaya stronghold have , there is a smaller, less obvious canister (which I GIESS must be for oxygen although that is disputed). The Cet-Ops masks and exopacks have the rda branding under the chin and also no visible signs of a canister in the exopack (their exopacks are even sleeker and fit into the backs of the lifejackets)

- the RDA takes Spiders knife off him when he is captured and we never see it again, which fair. BUT, for some reason Spider has his bow with him when they climb the mountains to get the Ikran 🤔 as if they kept his pokey little bow safe for him 🤔

- Lyle WAINFLEET. he is a great man. Clever, witty, tactical minded and LOYAL TO A FAULT. it was HIM who noticed that Kiri had four fingers, and thus was an actual bargaining chip. It was HIM who managed to scoop kiri out of the water when the rest of the kids had escaped, again, leading to Quaritch actually get some leverage back over jake. It was HIM who stayed behind in the bridge to babysit spider when Quaritch went out on the tulkun hunt. It was HIM who sounded so defeated when they thought Quaritch had fallen to his death… It was HIM that took Quaritch's tags from around the dead human's skeleton and kept them safe while Quaritch was not in the right frame of mind... I could go on. Lyle wainfleet has a crush on Quaritch and Quaritch knows it but ofc they NEVER speak about it , just get on with their lives x

AVATAR: WoW SPOILERS ALERT !!

YES HERE I AM RANTING BECAUSE NONE OF MY FRIENDS HAVE SEEN IT AND I NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT (please feel free to comment with your opinion because I!! Need!! To!! Talk!! About it!!)

I loved the movie, I enjoyed every minute of it and right now I’m obsessing over it (clearly) BUT there are some things about it that don’t sit right with me.

Of course I know that James Cameron doesn’t really care about a complicated plot and that’s absolutely okay! The plot on the first movie too was very simple and straightforward, and yet the movie was incredibly powerful. Although WoW was powerful as well, it lacked in… I don’t know, something.

I didn’t like the choice of moving the characters from the forest to the ocean, because it felt rushed and downright wrong. It hit e especially at the end, when Tonowari said (I’ve seen it in Italian so this is a liberal translation) “your child rests with our ancestors, you’re one of us now” and I thought… well, don’t their ancestors rest with the Omatikaya Clan? I’m talking about ancestors but also Neytiri’s father and all the people they lost in the first war. How can it be that they are Metkayina now, just like that? If someone moved me to idk France I could never say that I’m French, I would always be an Italian living in France. So yeah, the whole moving situation felt I bit wrong

Then the other thing that I didn’t really like was Neteyam’s death. Okay, I might be biased because that protective and responsible older brother hit me right in my trauma, but I think it’s more then that. Because me dislike of his death it’s not in a “he didn’t have to die” sense or a “no that’s my favorite character you can’t let him die” sense (although he is my favorite character okay), but more in like… was he the sacrificial lamb (sorry for the Bible reference, that’s Italian culture for you) from the beginning? I appreciate the courage of killing of an emotionally important character, but the story didn’t really allow space for him to grow and let himself be known, you know what I mean? He was there for a few scenes, and then SLAM, he’s dead and everybody is crying. It weirded me out. I actually didn’t cry for his death because I was too stunned and trying to piece together… what happened to him during the movie. I genuinely think he deserved more time and space to grow damn it

“Sa’nok will you tell me the story again,” a young metkayina boy asked his mother. The mother in her sick weakened state showcased a smile for her son. “Rotxo this is the third time today aren't you tired of it by now?”.

“They were guardians, and great healers being taught the ways of eywa herself. They are eywa’s stxeli, eywa’s tìhawnu, nothing was impossible for them. Their eyes glowed white and bright and could see into the soul of any” she opened her eyes wide and tickled her son a bit”.

“Peering into their soul to see their true intentions see who they truly were even if such wasn’t known to the spirit itself. How these gentle creatures flowed through pandora like a breeze protecting all they came across. But as we Na’vi began to advance more and more eywa’s stxeli began to lose more and more territory”.

“After they began stepping on our homes they realized giants and na’vi simply couldn’t exist side by side without danger.” She says less excited. “So they took off hiding away. Where they went is not known but it is said that some left to the deepest parts of the ocean and others ascended above us in the clouds.” She moved her hand and arm down and up as she spoke of the giants’ new homes.

The young boy’s eyes went wide in admiration not inky for his mother's storytelling but for the beauty of the story she told. “Sa’nok do you believe the giants are real? Because aonung always tells me that they’re just a story”.

“My boy, don’t listen to him they are real I know this because I met one myself” the boy shot straight up on his mat. “You did!? Why didn't you tell me” “Yes I did rotxo she's the only reason I met your father her name was n’ayla I saw her very few times but she was there when I needed her, I even saw her after your father's death”.

“Wow, so they're real THAT'S SO COOL MA”. Laying her son back down “yes it is cool my boy” “Ma, I'm gonna find one of eywa’s stxeli, and ill give them a gift then once the giant and I become best friends I'll bring them here to heal you then you'll be all better and everything will be perfect”. She smiled weakly knowing she won't be here for long “I can't wait my son, but remember one thing no matter what happens never stop believing”. She then kissed the boy on his head as he drifted to sleep.

But what will Rotxo do when he finds one of Eywa’s stexli sitting in the forest behind his home? Will he freak out? Pass away from utter shock? Or will he fall in love? I guess only time will tell what will happen with Rotxo’s Not So Little Secret.
