Friends, Musk is trying to downplay the chaos he’s creating by saying it’s much the same as the cost-cutting efforts of the Clinton administration. “What DOGE is doing is similar to Clinton/Gore Dem policies of the 1990s,” he posted on his X platform. Rubbish. I cut costs in the Clinton administration. The contrast with what Musk is doing couldn’t be sharper. As secretary of labor, I took the Department of Labor down from 18,500 employees to 16,600 — but did it without any layoffs. No chainsaws. No meat-axes. And we were careful to improve the services we were providing the public. For example, when people lost jobs in an industry that was shrinking, we devised a way to get them job-training and job-search assistance in addition to unemployment insurance. This helped move them into new jobs faster — which also saved the government over $1 billion a year in unemployment payments. We plowed that $1 billion back into job-training and job-search assistance, making the whole economy work better. In Musk’s attack on the federal workforce, thousands of federal workers have been fired without warning. Or they’ve been offered fake “deferred resignation” buyouts that were never authorized by Congress and may not be legal. Entire agencies have been gutted without legislative authorization, forcing judges to intervene. Our “Reinventing Government” effort was authorized by bipartisan congressional legislation. We worked carefully over several years to identify areas where government could be more efficient, notifying Congress of what we were doing. But the Republicans who control Congress today have allowed Musk to race ahead without them, even though the Constitution states that the legislative branch approves spending and federal law prohibits the president from cutting programs Congress has authorized without its permission. Clinton sought that permission, and Congress accepted $3.6 billion in cuts he proposed. We also involved federal workers, because they knew better than anyone what could be improved and how best to do it. We introduced performance standards, we encouraged our workers to embrace the internet, and we gave out awards to employees who came up with ways to cut red tape and improve service. “There was a tremendous effort put into understanding what should happen and what should change,” said Max Stier, president of the Partnership for Public Service, which seeks to improve the federal workforce. “What is happening now is actually taking us backwards.” We were deliberative and careful. Musk is the opposite. Musk sees government workers as the enemy — as costs to be cut. We saw government workers as assets to be developed, our partners in getting better services to the public more efficiently. Musk also calls people who benefit from government programs the “parasite class.” Presumably that’s why he’s eager to cut back Medicaid. But Medicaid’s beneficiaries aren’t parasites. Half of them are children. Oh, but if we’re talking about people who depend on government, Musk is the biggest “parasite” of all. Over the years, Musk and his businesses have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits, often at critical moments, helping seed the growth that has made him the richest person in the world. That he views public servants as his enemy and the people who benefit from public programs as “parasites” tells you all you need to know about Elon Musk. When you hear Musk say his effort is similar to what I and others did in the 1990s, know he’s lying. When you see him call people who benefit from public programs “parasites,” know he’s a hypocrite. Thoughts?

Need to move states because of anti-LGBTQ+ policies?

Keshet and the Hebrew Free Loan Society are partnering to offer interest-free loans of up to $10,000 for individuals and families to support relocation costs to another state because of anti-LGBTQ+ laws, policies, and climate in their current state of residence.

Applicants do not have to be Jewish and can be moving from any state in the U.S. to any state in the U.S. (but not outside of the country).

I'm glad to see posts circulating listing some of the significant legislation Tim Walz has supported as governor of Minnesota, but there's one I haven't seen mentioned yet that I think is really important for young voters to know about--the North Star Promise program, aka the reason I can afford to finish my Bachelor's degree.

Some of you may remember me posting about my financial aid offer being a lot more generous this year. That because Minnesota just implemented a scholarship program that makes undergraduate college tuition free for students with family incomes of less than $80,000 attending state or tribal colleges. As in, if after other grants and scholarships have been applied, you still owe money for tuition, the state of Minnesota will pay the rest.

Obviously tuition isn't the only expense associated with being a college student--I still am taking out student loans to help cover things like rent and other cost of living expenses--but it is the biggest one. As a low-income, non-traditional student paying my own way through college (and with a disabled partner who cannot work), I was genuinely unsure if I was going to be able to finish my degree before the North Star Promise program was implemented, and it has freed me from so much stress and worry.

A lot of factors had to combine to make a program like this possible --activists had to push for it, Minnesota had to vote in a Democratic majority in the state legislature to pass it, and we had to have a governor willing to sign the program into law--but it is still significant it was something Walz was willing to put his name on. And I cannot fathom how many lives it would change if he was willing to push for something similar to this at the federal level. So, keeping in mind that we have to vote up and down the ballot as well as keep the pressure on our elected officials to support programs like this once folks are in office, let's make it happen.

First, let me apologise for making people worry. I appreciate all those who reached out and I'm sorry that I couldn't get back to you all.

I have been through a very rough spiral. It was building for months, and I am still not fully okay.

For those who want context, it's under the cut.

I bought a house in May. It's expensive. I wasn't ready financially or in many ways for that step, but my partner convinced me. I told him as much but I was not heard. Alas, I have a mortgage, full time work, astudent loan, and an ongoing school program to contend with. It hasn't been easy and it caught up to me.

At the same time, a person who traumatised me and I have no way of fully extricating from my life, has moved closer. To keep the peace, I have to associate with him to a degree and he pretends that nothing ever happened. To him, it was nothing.

In June, I moved. It was hard and fast paced. I did most of the paperwork etc for the whole process and obv helped with the physical transition as well. I was responsible for deadlines and checklists for not just myself but my partner.

I was plugging holes in a sinking boat.

At the same time, I had obligations to my family. Every weekend if I wasn't dealing with the house and all that goes into it, I was running around to babysit or see family or whathave you.

In July, I pinched a nerve behind my tailbone. I missed a week of work bc my injury but it took longer for my to recover. I am still feeling it today. It was more than physical, but emotional.

I also got three periods that month. Hormonal can't begin to explain how fucked up I've been.

On top of all that, there are underlying issues associated with other trauma and discontent. I'm realising that I have been loyal and tolerant to the point of my own detriment.

I don't want to hurt people how I've been hurt, so I don't speak up. When people tell me something about myself, I let all the doubts planted in my mind from years of abuse convince me that they're right. I can admit my faults but often times I will think that proof of one flaw means everything about me is rotten.

People forget about me or just don't care. Both or either. They don't put the same effort in that I do. I find it hard to connect because years of disregard and neglect have told me that the other side just won't care.

But I'm not just hurt, I'm angry. I'm seeking therapy and trying to figure this out.

It all boiled over after my last post. Nothing I do is enough. For anyone. Not even when it's a hobby. I was frustrated bc the place I use for escape just made me feel like less than.

Obviously, I don't mean everyone or even the majority. I appreciate the discourse and fun and everything here! There are so many awesome people to interact with and I have missed you all, however, my headspace was bad. Very bad. I had thoughts I haven't dealt with in years.

I put my nose down and just went to work. I didn't wanna talk to anyone. I didn't wanna be in the world.

I did some reading, eventually some non-fandom writing, and sometimes, I just stayed alive.

I don't know if I'm really okay but I'm trying.

To those who have been so patient and supportive, you deserve everything. To those who are silent supporters, you do too. And even to those people who send me the most vile hate, you deserve to lift yourself out of the dark space you're stuck in. Hopefully, I can, too.

"Seven federal agencies are partnering to implement President Biden’s American Climate Corps, announcing this week they would work together to recruit 20,000 young Americans and fulfill the administration's vision for the new program. 

The goals spelled out in the memorandum of understanding include comprehensively tackling climate change, creating partnerships throughout various levels of government and the private sector, building a diverse corps and serving all American communities.

The agencies—which included the departments of Commerce, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and Energy, as well the Environmental Protection Agency and AmeriCorps—also vowed to ensure a “range of compensation and benefits” that open the positions up to a wider array of individuals and to create pathways to “high-quality employment.”  

Leaders from each of the seven agencies will form an executive committee for the Climate Corps, which Biden established in September, that will coordinate efforts with an accompanying working group. They will create the standards for ACC programs, set compensation guidelines and minimum terms of service, develop recruitment strategies, launch a centralized website and establish performance goals and objectives. The ACC groups will, beginning in January, hold listening sessions with potential applicants, labor unions, state and local governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders. 

The working group will also review all federal statutes and hiring authorities to remove any barriers to onboarding for the corps and standardize the practices across all participating agencies. Benefits for corps members will include housing, transportation, health care, child care, educational credit, scholarships and student loan forgiveness, stipends and non-financial services.

As part of the goal of the ACC, agencies will develop the corps so they can transition to “high-quality, family-sustaining careers with mobility potential” in the federal or other sectors. AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith said the initiative would prepare young people for “good-paying union jobs.” 

Within three weeks of rolling out the ACC, EPA said more than 40,000 people—mostly in the 18-35 age range—expressed interest in joining the corps. The administration set an ambitious goal for getting the program underway, aiming to establish the corps’ first cohort in the summer of 2024. 

The corps members will work in roles related to ecosystem restoration and conservation, reforestation, waterway protection, recycling, energy conservation, clean energy deployment, disaster preparedness and recovery, fire resilience, resilient recreation infrastructure, research and outreach. The administration will look to ensure 40% of the climate-related investments flow to disadvantaged communities as part of its Justice40 initiative.  

EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the MOU would allow the ACC to “work across the federal family” to push public projects focused on environmental justice and clean energy. 

“The Climate Corps represents a significant step forward in engaging and nurturing young leaders who are passionate about climate action, furthering our journey towards a sustainable and equitable future,” Regan said. 

The ACC’s executive committee will hold its first meeting within the next 30 days. It will draw support from a new climate hub within AmeriCorps, as well as any staffing the agency heads designate."

This is also by far the longest request I've written and honestly this took a life of its own but I still hope you like it! Main masterlist

The monotone droll in the bank was white noise in your life that you learned to slowly hate. Day in, day out it was the same thing—customers withdrawing, depositing, and claiming loans. You liked numbers, that was how you ended up as a manager, but the cookie cutter business smile you had to keep on your face was a con you wish to part from. 

You sighed. Your roommate turned secret crush, Dr. Spencer Reid, had warned you about the serial robberies that had happened within the state of Virginia and Washington. He advised you to be vigilant and if possible, to keep your phone within your reach and you easily agreed having heard some of the macabre cases he’d been involved in.

You just didn’t think it would happen today.

“Get down on the ground!” A man’s voice echoed throughout the lobby, followed by a series of gunshots.

Spencer’s voice played in your head as if he was a lighthouse guiding you out from the panic. Hide. Don’t panic. Press the hidden alarm and dial my number.

You thanked your past self for programming his contact on speed dial. Volume down and no words uttered, you hid the phone inside your blouse hoping to not get caught.

“You there!” One of the masked men caught sight of you. “Outside. Now!”

You nodded, averting your eyes to show submission. Another tactic from Spencer.

Wishing the call picked up the trio of robbers voices, you stayed facing down on the lobby surround by the rest of the hostages.

Spencer, please. Please, get my message.

Just a few miles away, tension was high in the BAU conference room. The round table littered with folders and cooling coffee mugs. The team was running on a mixture of caffeine and sheer will to solve the serial bank robber case, tagged as priority by Strauss, that had been terrorizing states for a span of months. 

Spencer raked his already unruly hair. So far, the profile was incomplete. They knew there were three in the team but with varying heights and builds in various crime scenes, even that was shaky. What they were sure of was the sick game of Russian roulette they would play with their hostages, always with one bullet in a revolver and who ever is unlucky, dies with a hole between their brows and the remaining hostages are pistol whipped to unconsciousness. 

He knew he should stay objective. He knew that but how could he, when who he considers as his secret flower was at risk every second the unsubs were at large? It was his mission to keep you safe and the chances of you being caught in the line of fire heightened each second.

Vibration from his pocket brought him out of his musings. 

It was you. Right there and then, Spencer knew it was anything but good. You never called during work hours and with the last conversation between you having been about safety, it had settled in his stomach that the worst reality had come to fruition.

He picked up without saying a word, straining his ears to hear any distinguishable background noise. That was when he heard it—the authoritative, cocky voice yelling at you to come outside. His heart dropped. 

No. No. No. Anything but this.

“Sir, we just got a call,” Penelope rushed into the conference room. “There’s a live hostage taking at—”

“—Commerce Bank. 125 Independence Boulevard,” Reid interjected.

The profilers shared a look.

“That’s right,” Penelope muttered.

Morgan raised an eyebrow at him as he hurriedly stood up and collected his belongings. “Wait Reid—” causing him to stop in his tracks and turn to face back at the team. “—How’d you know?”

“Because Y/N works there,” he promptly exits the room, hightailing it to the elevator.

Emily looked at JJ. “Who’s that?”

She shrugged, lost too on who you were.

The team had split into two vehicles. Hotch, Rossi, and Reid in one while Morgan Emily, and JJ in the other.

Rossi glanced at Hotch, communicating the tension Reid was releasing from the passenger seat. In turn, Hotch sneaks a peek via the rear view mirror and profiles Reid’s ticks—hands clasped tight together, right leg shaking up and down, eyes shifting from left to right, and deep breaths through the nose and mouth. 

“Reid,” he called out.

Blown wide doe eyes meet his. “Hm?”

“We need you to stay focused. If you can’t do that, I’ll pull you out of this case.”

“I—I can do it!” His voice cracking.

“Are you sure, kid?” Rossi clarified.

He nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, it’s just she’s my—” roommate but that singular title wasn’t fitting to describe who you were to him. No classification was good enough, really. “—I can focus,” he declared. 

There was a series of looks exchanged between the two senior agents. They didn’t need to be seasoned profilers to understand that their youngest is one slip away from panic.

Hotch sighed. “Alright, Reid, but you follow my orders. Got it?”

“Yes.”

Einstein’s theory of special relativity was what came to mind as he paced outside your hospital room. The physicist implied that time moves relative to the observer. An object moving very fast experiences time more slowly than in rest and that was exactly what he felt as he paces back and forth outside your room, desperately waiting for any update—the good or the bad. Everyone seemed to be moving at a leisure pace while he, Dr. Spencer Reid, hangs on the precipice of elation and despair. 

The team had sent him away, to you specifically, when it was obvious that his otherwise objective mind was of no help in finishing up the case. Was it dreadful of him that he felt relief course through his veins when it wasn’t you that got the short end of the stick during the unsubs’ Russian Roulette? Yes, possibly but he was only human. A being filled with conundrums and good vs evil. 

The impact of today was eye opening. He could no longer deny to himself that you were more than just a roommate or an acquaintance or a friend. Oh, how hard he tried so hard to push away any thought that seemed any less innocent or chivalrous, but the idea of seeing those beautiful eyes broken and in pain made him want to face the truth. The truth being how deliriously in love Spencer Reid was with you. 

His phone rang, disturbing his mind-altering revelation thoughts.

“Hey kid,” It was Morgan. “How is she?”

Reid licked his lips, eyes trained on the still closed door. “I—I haven’t seen her. The doctors are still inside and I’m still here—outside.” 

“I know this isn’t the time but should we know who she is?” A pause. “Girlfriend?”

“No. No, she’s my roommate,” his sigh coated in despair, murky and sad enough for Morgan to notice.

“You sounded so worried. It’s almost like you’re in love with her or something.”

“I am—” your door opened. “I have to go, Morgan,” he hung up before another word could be uttered.

“Are you Dr. Spencer Reid?” The female doctor asked.

He nodded.

She smiled. “She’ll see you now.”

The White House announced that a landmark 23 million Americans, 1 in 6 households, have been connected to affordable high speed internet with the help of the Affordable Connectivity Program, saving Americans between $30 and $75 every month on their internet bill. 4 Million ACP users are seniors, 1/4th of households on the program are African American and 1/4th are Latino, and it supports 320,000 households on Tribal lands. Sadly the program will be forced to end if Republicans in Congress continue to block new funding

The White House announced $5 billion for a National Semiconductor Technology Center, focusing on research and development as well as workforce needs. This is part of an effort under the CHIPS and Science Act to make America a world leader in science and grow jobs for the 21st century. This will include hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in workforce development

The EPA announced finalized rules that will strength air quality standard around fine particle pollution, AKA soot. The new stronger rules are projected to prevent 4,200 premature deaths and save Americans $46 billion in health costs by 2032. Soot is particularly harmful to those with lung and heart illnesses, children and those with asthma. Industrial soot is more common in low income communities

The Department of Transportation announced $1.5 Billion investment in America's bus systems. The bulk of the money will go helping local transport authorities buy low or no emission buses. There will also be investment in bus facilities.

President Biden signed a memorandum directing a strengthening of human rights safe guards around weapons transferred from US stockpiles to allied nations. The directive seeks to guarantee no arms are transferred that might be used to violate human rights.

HHS and HUD announced a join program partnering with 8 states and DC to help streamline an all of government response to homelessness. This is an off shoot of the $3.16 billion dollar investment amounted by HUD last week to end homelessness in America

The Department of Energy and FEMA released the findings of a two year study that projections Puerto Rico will be able to be 100% renewable energy by 2050. DoE also announced that by the end of the 30,000 low income Puerto Ricans will be able to apply for a solar power program, the first investments in a billion dollar DoE program for the island's renewable energy future

Department of Transportation announced $417 million dollar loan to the North Carolina Turnpike Authority to complete a major transportation overhaul in the greater Raleigh area

The EPA and Department of Energy announced a joint plan to invest federal funds to help measure and reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas production. Methane is the second largest green house gas after CO2 and is responsible for 30% of global warming in the last 200 years. This comes after the EPA pushed new rules to fine oil and gas manufacturers for excess methane emissions.

The Senate confirmed 2 more Biden nominated federal judges. This brings the total number of Biden judges to 177 For the first time in history a majority of a President's judicial nominees are not white men, Biden has nominated a majority women and people of color Biden also nominated 4 more federal judges, including two LGBT candidates. If they are confirmed it'll bring Biden's LGBT judge total to 11 tying with President Obama for the most LGBT people put on the federal bench

The sun was setting and the tide just reached its lowest. You walked barefoot in the late Spring warmth looking at the tide pools and for any seashells that might have floated up. Seeing tide pools full of marine life would be more suitable for your newest project. You were accepted 4 years ago into the marine biology program at your university that boosted a satellite center on the coast of La Push. For your senior protect, you would be staying with a local family and working with the tribe. The goal was to find and record data on their coast of the reservation. The boring part was the why- funding and paperwork for the state, etc., but the fun part was the actual research. What caused different levels of salinity, temperature, tides day to day versus other pacific coast, types of animals and how this changes through the day,as well as the major impact on the tribe.

Your family were the Clearwater family as Sue was on the council, therefore your parter and sponsor for the project. Mostly to keep you away from vampires or wolves, she also knew the land where you needed to be, as well to pretend other areas do not exist.

Eventually, you found out. It was funny and embarrassing the story how you two met. You were staying in Seth’s room for the couple of weeks you were there before your project completion and therefore your graduation and off to look through all the new job opportunities. Sue had to work on tribal projects so Embry was deemed your partner and guide for your final work day. Later this evening, Emily was throwing you a party to celebrate your graduation and to wish you luck in your career. Embry was torn-he wanted you to stay with him, but it’s only been two weeks and you had a life without him waiting for you. Two weeks was not enough time to admit all the feeling he had because he felt like he trapped you. He tore your future away and put you in danger now. He ruined your life. The thoughts spiraled all the morning as you two walked hand in hand. Sharp rocks were under you as you climbed the cliffs and he wanted you to be careful while respecting your independence.

You noticed he was down so you asked him to be honest. He basically threw up everything he was thinking in word vomit. He couldn’t hide it when his imprint asked for honesty. He didn’t even know if you understood just how deep the imprint went. He didn’t want you feeling pain or getting sick with the distance. You lived in Montana, but closer to the east state line. He knew your job opportunities included California, Portland, Atlanta, Florida, and even the Caribbean. He couldn’t leave his pack, but he didn’t think you knew the severity of all this.

Processing all the weight he let go, you were able to start to see the life as an imprint. Honestly, you had been thinking about ways to stay, even considering a job under the tribal land conservation department of the state. It was a job with wonderful pay, benefits, and it had no end in sight to the conservation efforts. Meaning- you do a great job and you will hold the position. The surprise was going to be told tomorrow as only Emily knew to help surprise him. You were not going to lie as you were nervous that he wouldn’t want you to stay. Maybe he didn’t feel the closeness you did or how every time he moved you felt it? All you know is there is pain when he leaves to go patrol or when you have to travel with Sue out of the reservation for research. You knew you loved him from the first day and you thought you were crazy. It did make it easier yet stranger when none of the pack seemed bothered by the quick pace. It just worked. You wanted forever, but were not sure if you were really just a short term fwb to him? Your heart had been broken before so you were always analyzing trying to save yourself from hurt. So you told him all that just like he did to you. You left out the surprise job acceptance for the party still.

He kissed you. You felt the same and kissed back. It felt perfect and right. You finished your research and emailed the final document, while walking out of the woods with a feeling of accomplishment. Finally a graduated woman that you worked so hard for! You screamed and clap while jumping in the air as Embry laughed and pulled you in kissing your forehead. “I’m so proud of you princess.” Looking into your eyes and then suggestively at your lips, you let him congratulate you without words and only a kiss as you were still in a public setting.

After a shower and change of clothes, you wait for Embry to come pick you up again for the big surprise party.

Arriving at Emily’s, Embry comes around to yourself to help you out of the truck. Giving you a big hug and spin you knew he was likely stalling. You didn’t mind. He put you down and backed you up to the truck, kissing you soft and slow, finally pulling back to repeat for the millionth time “congratulations baby”. You giggle and thank him. You know he’s excited so you don’t mind the constant phrase being given. Besides he has a sexy voice calling you baby and you wanted to savor it just incase you staying to work here was not appealing to him.

Asking if you are ready, you nod as he takes your hand to go inside. Opening the door screams of congratulations are heard as well as cheers and claps. You blush hard as the huge group of people here to celebrate you was overwhelming. You thank everyone and the party gets started. Music, food, and drinks go around. Emily brings you a cake and before cutting it everyone says words if they wish. Sue thanked you for all you did, as you did to her for her home and friendship. The guys shared funny stories and the other council members appreciated your work. Finally you go to cut the cake and suddenly got hit something making an unexpected bang noise with the knife. Emily baked a sealed container into this cake for Embry to open as her accepted job. As he read the results he was nervous, as you were as well for different reasons. He pulled out the answer to be “La Push”. Everyone was confused and you explained. Embry didn’t say anything as he was still confused but the others smiled knowing you were happy and wouldn’t leave. The party continued a while longer and wrapped up. Finally you head home to pack. Embry drives you and you ask “were you disappointed?” Embry doesn’t realize he never said anything. “No Y/N, I wasn’t. I was confused as to what job you have and curious to why you are staying. Guilt that you feel you have to and also angry that i stole you from living your dreams due to close proximity necessities. I guess I’m saying, I feel guilt because I ruined your life. But I can’t be sorry for loving you because I can’t help that. And I wouldn’t want to”

Tears were falling. You hugged him and started laughing. You explained that you both worried about the same thing but are dancing around the reality that you fell in love and life changed. You wouldn’t change it. So you went home to pack your apartment and move back to La Push in your new home. The position came with lodging and you appreciated the privacy over neighbors. Embry and you dated. You stayed where he was because you landed your dream job. No limits, your ideas and rules, and one very hot wolf bringing you lunch everyday.

The starfish always amaze you with their beauty as you study them more. Embry calls to you as he quickly runs to grab your arm leading you off the rocky tide pools. “38 weeks pregnant and you are literally climbing rocks? You are on work leave right now princess please relax.” You just smile as he knew you would never pass them without looking. Turning to watch your oldest boy play with the pack on the beach, you thought about how your middle boy was such an easy pregnancy. This one was medically complicated. Embry says there will be more as he saw your family in the vision during imprinting. He hasn’t let you down this far, only healed you and loved you.

Intuit: “Our fraud fights racism”

Today's key concept is "predatory inclusion": "a process wherein lenders and financial actors offer needed services to Black households but on exploitative terms that limit or eliminate their long-term benefits":

Perhaps you recall predatory inclusion from the Great Financial Crisis, when predatory subprime mortgages with deceptive teaser rates were foisted on Black homeowners (who were eligible for better mortgages), resulting in a wave of Black home theft in the foreclosure crisis:

Before these loans blew up, they were styled as a means of creating Black intergenerational wealth through housing speculation. They turned out to be a way to suck up Black families' savings before rendering them homeless and forcing them into houses owned by the Wall Street slumlords who bought all the housing stock the Great Financial Crisis put on the market:

That was just an update on an old con: the "home sale contract," invented by loan-sharks who capitalized on redlining to rip off Black families. Back when banks and the US government colluded to deny mortgages to Black households, sleazy lenders created the "contract loan," which worked like a mortgage, but if you were late on a single payment, the lender could seize and sell your home and not pay you a dime – even if the house was 99% paid for:

Usurers and con-artists love to style themselves as anti-racists, seeking to "close the racial wealth gap." The payday lending industry – whose triple-digit interest rates trap poor people in revolving debt that they can never pay off – styles itself as a force for racial justice:

Payday lenders prey on poor people, and in America, "poor" is often a euphemism for "Black." Payday lenders disproportionately harm Black families:

Payday lenders are just unlicensed banks, who deploy a layer of bullshit to claim that they don't have to play by the rules that bind the rest of the finance sector. This scam is so juicy that it spawned the fintech industry, in which a bunch of unregulated banks sprung up to claim that they were too "innovative" to be regulated:

When you hear "Fintech," think "unlicensed bank." Fintech turned predatory inclusion into a booming business, recruiting Black spokespeople to claim that being the sucker at the table in the cryptocurrency casino was actually a form of racial justice:

But not all predatory inclusion is financial. Take Facebook Basics, Meta's "poor internet for poor people" program. Facebook partnered with telcos in the Global South to rig their internet access. These "zero rating" programs charged subscribers by the byte to reach any service except Facebook and its partners. Facebook claimed that this would "bridge the digital divide," by corralling "the next billion internet users" into using its services.

The fact that this would make "Facebook" synonymous with "the internet" was just an accidental, regrettable side-effect. Naturally, this was bullshit from top to bottom, and the countries where zero-rating was permitted ended up having more expensive wireless broadband than the countries that banned it:

The predatory inclusion gambit is insultingly transparent, but that doesn't stop desperate scammers from trying it. The latest chancer is Intuit, who claim that the end of its decade-long, wildly profitable "free tax prep" scam is bad for Black people:

Some background. In nearly every rich country on Earth, the tax authorities send every taxpayer a pre-filled tax return, based on the information submitted by employers, banks, financial planners, etc. If that looks good to you, you just sign it and send it back. Otherwise, you can amend it, or just toss it in the trash and pay a tax-prep specialist to produce your own return.

But in America, taxpayers spend billions every year to send forms to the IRS that tell it things it already knows. To make this ripoff seem fair, the hyper-concentrated tax-prep industry, led by the Intuit, creators of Turbotax, pretended to create a program to provide free tax-prep to working people.

This program was called Free File, and it was a scam. The tax-prep cartel each took a different segment of Americans who were eligible for Freefile and then created an online house of mirrors that would trick those people into spending hours working on their tax-returns until they were hit with an error message falsely claiming they were ineligible for the free service and demanding hundreds of dollars to file their returns.

Intuit were world champions at this scam. They blocked their Freefile offering from search-engine crawlers and then bought ads that showed up when searchers typed "freefile" into the query box that led them to deceptively named programs that had "free" in their names but cost a fortune to use – more than you'd pay for a local CPA to file on your behalf.

The Attorneys General of nearly every US state and territory eventually sued Intuit over this, settling for $141m:

The FTC is still suing them over it:

We have to rely on state AGs and the FTC to bring Intuit to justice because every Intuit user clicks through an agreement in which we permanently surrender our right to sue the company, no matter how many laws it breaks. Even as the scam was running out, Intuit spent millions lobby-blitzing Congress, desperate for action that would let it continue to privately tax the nation for filling in forms that – once again – told the IRS things it already knew. They really love the idea of paying taxes on paying your taxes:

But they failed. The IRS has taken Freefile in-house, will send you a pre-completed tax return if you want it. This should be the end of the line for Intuit and other tax-prep profiteers:

Now we're at the end of the line for the scam, Intuit is playing the predatory inclusion card. They're conning Black newspapers like the Chicago Defender into running headlines like "IRS Free Tax Service Could Further Harm Blacks,"

The only named source in that article? Intuit spokesperson Derrick Plummer. The article went out on the country's Black newswire Trice Edney, whose editor-in-chief did not respond to Propublica's Paul Kiel's questions.

Then Black Enterprise got in on the game, publishing "Critics Claim The IRS Free Tax Prep Service Could Hurt Black Americans." Once again, the only named source for the article was Plummer, who was "quoted at length." Black Enterprise declined to tell Kiel where that article came from:

For Intuit, placing op-eds is a tried-and-true tactic for laundering its ripoffs into respectability. Leaked internal Intuit memos detail the company's strategy of "pushing back through op-eds" to neutralize critics:

Intuit spox Derrick Plummer did respond to Kiel's queries, denying that Intuit was paying for these op-eds, saying "with an idea as bad as the Direct File scheme we don’t have to pay anyone to talk about how terrible it is."

Meanwhile, ex-NAACP director (and No Labels co-chair) Benjamin Chavis has used his position atop the National Newspaper Publishers Association to publish op-eds against the IRS Direct File program, citing the Progressive Policy Institute, a pro-business thinktank that Intuit's internal documents describe as part of its "coalition":

Chavis's Chicago Tribune editorial claimed that Direct File could cause Black filers to miss out on tax-credits they are entitled to. This is a particularly ironic claim given Intuit's prominent role in sabotaging the Child Tax Credit, a program that lifted more Americans out of poverty than any other in history:

It's also an argument that can be found in Intuit's own anti-Direct File blog posts:

The claim is that because the IRS disproportionately audits Black filers (this is true), they will screw them over in other ways. But Evelyn Smith, co-author of the study that documented the bias in auditing says this is bullshit:

That's because these audits of Black households are triggered by the IRS's focus on Earned Income Tax Credits, a needlessly complicated program available to low-income (and hence disproportionately Black) workers. The paperwork burden that the IRS heaps on EITC recipients means that their returns contain errors that trigger audits.

As Smith told Propublica, "With free, assisted filing, we might expect EITC claimants to make fewer mistakes and face less intense audit scrutiny, which could help reduce disparities in audit rates between Black and non-Black taxpayers."

Meanwhile, the predatory inclusion talking points continue to proliferate. Nevada accountants and the state's former controller somehow coincidentally managed to publish op-eds with nearly identical wording. Phillip Austin, vice-chair of Arizon's East Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, claims that free IRS tax prep "would disproportionately hurt the Hispanic community." Austin declined to tell Propublica how he came to that conclusion.

Right-wing think-tanks are pumping out a torrent of anti-Direct File disinfo. This surely has nothing to do with the fact that, for example, Center Forward has HR Block's chief lobbyist on its board:

The whole thing reeks of bullshit and desperation. That doesn't mean that it won't succeed in killing Direct File. If there's one thing America loves, it's letting businesses charge us a tax just for dealing with our own government, from paying our taxes to camping in our national parks:

Interestingly, there's a MAGA version of predatory inclusion, in which corporations convince low-information right-wingers that efforts to protect them from ripoffs are "woke." These campaigns are, incredibly, even stupider than the predatory inclusion tale.

For example, there's a well-coordianted campaign to block the junk fees that the credit card cartel extracts from merchants, who then pass those charges onto us. This campaign claims that killing junk fees is woke:

How does that work? Here's the logic: Target sells Pride merch. That makes them woke. Target processes a lot of credit-card transactions, so anything that reduces card-processing fees will help Target. Therefore, paying junk fees is a way to own the libs.

Keshet and the Hebrew Free Loan Society are partnering to offer interest-free loans of up to $10,000 for individuals and families to support relocation costs to another state because of  anti-LGBTQ+ laws, policies, and climate in their current state of residence. 

Applicants do not have to be Jewish and can be moving from any state in the U.S. to any state in the U.S. (but not outside of the country).  

To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Have plans to move to a different state within three months of receiving an HFLS loan and be able to submit documentation of their move OR plan to move no later than six months from the time they receive the loan.

Have annual household income sufficient to support loan repayment, and no higher than the HFLS income limits.

Have an active checking account.

Provide one guarantor who meets the two requirements above.

Initial funding for this program is provided by the Jewish LGBTQ Donor Network.

i think the thing about carlos and lando that pushes things into focus is how they speak about each other, to each other, how comfortable they are when one of them is suddenly around. it feels so surreal because of who they are; carlos, in his late twenties, driver with maybe the most confident and guarded personality i have ever encountered and lando, in his early twenties, driver that is somewhat anxious and really outgoing which culminated in who they are today.

like don’t forget how depressed carlos was before he met the kid, he was stupidly released from his red bull contract after being loaned off to renault for a year, some of the best racing in the sport at the time being straight up ignored and given a one-off chance by mclaren. like lando was in the mcl young driver program while he was still at carlin, he had the reins in a way even if he was a rookie. fernando left it to him but he wasn’t arrogant about it.

lando can be sometimes but he wasn’t with carlos. he worked with him and carlos saw a friend in him, he could have battered the kid that first year but in choosing the team, he chose lando. he could’ve been threatened, either of them, but they stuck it out with each other. i think that’s what fucks everybody up. we never were close to winning the championship that year but fuck sake, that fourth place really had us feeling like champions after all of it.

that’s why brazil means so much to me. between it being lando’s birthday that year and carlos first podium, i felt like they’d given a little piece of their selves to each other. like i can’t be the authority of what a best friend is, what a teammate is or what a partner is but no one can ever say to me that carlos sainz jr doesn’t absolutely, with every fiber of his being trust lando norris; in the same way lando can’t forget it and how carlos thinks of him, how he keeps repaying it over and over again.

his nineteen year old self still so fucking chuffed that his teammate thinks he’s good at what he does and keeps telling him, keeps passing him praise and reassurance in a way no other teammate has. and so now twenty three years old, carlos sainz jr looks at him and lando norris feels like a teenager again. one that will be worthy of his support. lando still doesn’t understand carlos has believed in him since they’ve fucking met. since snowy first day in england.

[Lore/Story behind the aircraft below the cut]

When Lockheed Martin won the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program with their YF-22 Raptor demonstrator, Northrop & McDonnell Douglas placed their contender, the YF-23 Black Widow II's, into storage pending dismantling for static display.

However, fortune would come calling from an unsuspecting source: Australia. The Royal Australian Air Force had recently completed delivery of 75 brand new F/A-18A/B Hornets to replace their aging fleet of Mirage III's. However, planners within the Department of Defence and Australian Defence Force recognised the shifting landscape of aerial warfare, and payed close attention to the US's ATF program.

Initially, the RAAF wanted to purchase the F-22 after it won the program in 1991 and had expressed tentative interest, though didn't commit due to the high initial operating costs at the time and recent budgetary issues the ADF faced due to other concurrent modernization programs taking place. By the time the RAAF were ready to order the aircraft, the US had marked the aircraft as unavailable for export sales.

Lockheed Martin did offer the RAAF the opportunity to buy into the Joint Strike Fighter program, which would be the precursor program that resulted in the development of the F-35 Lighting II series of aircraft, however RAAF leadership turned to McDonnell Douglas and Northrop, recalling how well their YF-23 performed in the program demonstrations.

The two testbed aircraft, Spider and Grey Ghost, were shipped to Australian on loan for use by the RAAF's Aircraft Research & Development Unit (ARDU) for evaluations in the mid 1990's, as the operating environment in Australia was different to that of the United States. While the aircraft performed well, some modifications were suggested including the use of more fuel efficient engines, an adjusted cockpit panel layout, and provisions to mount external stores much like the F-22 had (primarily for long-distance ferry flights across Australia, but also for use in low-threat or permissive environments where stealth is not a concern).

Northrop & McDonnell Douglas accommodated the upgrades, and in 1999, an initial purchase of 24 F/A-23A stealth fighters was made to equip two squadrons with the modified design. The airframe was given the designator of Redback in reference to the small but dangerous spider that called the continent home, whilst also showing homage to the original name of Black Widow II.

No 75 SQN and No 77 SQNs were the first recipients of the new F/A-23As, operating as composite squadrons comprised of both the new Redback and the older F/A-18A+ Hornets. As the Hornets aged, they were transferred to No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit for training and adversarial use.

There was talk of purchasing more Redbacks to augment a strike gap left behind pending the retirement of the venerable F-111C Aardvarks, however the decision was made to purchase Boeing's F/A-18F Super Hornets (with Boeing having bought and merged with McDonnell Douglas).

F/A-23A Redback was the initial version developed in the late 1990s and early 2000's, with upgrades and enhancements introduced over time to incorporate newer technologies and extend the life of these aircraft. Upgraded aircraft were unofficially referred to as -23A+s, similar to how F/A-18As that were upgraded to match the capability of the newer F/A-18C/Ds were referred to as A/B+

In the late 2000's, the RAAF (under license from Northrop/Boeing) introduced a variant featuring new engines, a new radar and updated avionics to incorporate newly released weapons systems, designated F/A-23B.

With the F-35 coming into service with the US and other JSF partner nations, and the older legacy Hornets retired out of service, the RAAF were looking into how to compliment their fleet of Redbacks. The F/A-18F Super Hornets operated by No. 1 and No. 6 Squadron were due for upgrade, and Boeing proposed the "Advanced Super Hornet" as a upgrade package.

To sweeten the deal, components from ASH were splintered off for use to update the fleet of F/A-23Bs, now used by all three former Hornet squadrons (3, 75, & 77) as well as 2OCU and the ARDU. Forming the B+ 'Mid Life Update', components borrowed from the ASH included it's new IRST and AESA radar package, compatibility with the Enclosed Weapons Pod, and a fully glass cockpit display.

By 2020, both the Redback and Rhino finished their upgrades, and formed the backbone of Australia's air warfare component, with No.'s 3, 75, and 77 operating F/A-23B+ Redbacks, No. 1 operating the F/A-18F+ (informal designation for the Advanced Super Hornet) and No. 6 operating as a composite of F/A-18F+ and EA-18G+ (EA-18G Growlers given the Advanced Super Hornet upgrade package).

Australia remains the only operator of the YF-23 platform, though not for a lack of trying on the part of Northrop & McDonnell Douglas (later Boeing).

This YF-23 "What If" concept livery is dedicated to my friend @kaitaiga, who I know is fucking obsessed with the YF-23 Black Widow II. The livery came first, and then of course my 'writer' brain had to think up a background as to how the RAAF got their hands on an F-22 equivalent aircraft and maintained its service instead of buying into the F-35 program.

I have nothing against F-35 (anymore) though I am still salty that we haven't gone full-send into the Advanced Super Hornet. The CFTs along the spine just look sleek as fuck.

Yesterday, Trump dismantled much of the Department of Education. He ordered wrestling executive-turned-Education Secretary Linda McMahon to shut most of her department, although student loans and special education funding will continue.

His executive order will effectively destroy a $100 billion-a-year executive department created by Congress under President Jimmy Carter 45 years ago.

But there’s a much larger story here.

Combine this with Trump’s attacks on higher education — his gutting the funding of the National Institutes of Health (which provides a large portion of biomedical research) and the National Science Foundation (engineering and computer research) and his effective closure of USAID (which underwrites research in global diseases).

Put this together with Trump’s attacks on the freedom of speech of university students and professors.

And with Trump’s (and RFK Jr.’s) attacks on vaccine science.

With Trump’s and right-wing governors’ attacks on teaching the truth in our schools about America’s history of slavery and Native American genocide.

Combine this with Trump’s attack on America’s libraries — last week’s executive order mandating cuts in the funding of libraries around the country — which will jeopardize literacy development and reading programs, reliable internet access for those without it at home, and homework help and other resources for students and educators.

And his attacks on America’s museums (the same executive order cut their funding, too). And his attack on the arts, as illustrated by Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center (last month, he announced himself its new chair, replaced 13 board members, and inserted a new interim president).

What’s the larger picture?

Not an “attack on the liberal state,” as I keep reading. Not “the culmination of Trump’s culture wars.” Certainly not that Trump is seeking “small government” over “big government” or advancing traditional conservatism over traditional liberalism.

What’s really occurring is an attack on the American mind.

Throughout history, tyrants have understood that their major enemy is an educated citizenry. Slaveholders prohibited the enslaved from learning to read. Nazis burned books. Putin and Xi censor the media.

Ignorance is the handmaiden of tyranny.

Those who believe in democracy, on the other hand, have been at the forefront of the movement for free, universal public education and for public libraries, museums, and the arts.

They understand that democracy depends on people knowing what’s occurring around them and having the capacity to deliberate critically about it.

Trump is only the frontman in this attack on the American mind.

The attack is really coming from the anti-democracy movement: from JD Vance and from Vance’s major financial backer, venture capitalist Peter Thiel, who staked $15 million on Vance’s Ohio senatorial election in 2022 and helped convince Trump to make Vance vice president. And from Thiel’s early business partner, Elon Musk.

Thiel is a self-styled libertarian who once wrote: “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible.”

Hello? Freedom is incompatible with democracy only if you view democracy as a potential constraint on your wealth and power.

Behind Vance and Musk is a libertarian group of rich crypto bros, tech executives, back-to-the-landers, and disaffected far-right intellectuals.

Curtis Yarvin comes as close as anyone to being their intellectual godfather. He has written that political power in the United States is held by a liberal amalgam of universities and the mainstream media whose commitment to equality and justice is eroding America’s social order.

In Yarvin’s view, democratic governments are inefficient and wasteful. They should be replaced with sovereign joint-stock corporations whose major “shareholders” select an executive with total power, who serves at their pleasure. Yarvin refers to the city-state of Singapore as an example of a successful authoritarian regime.

Make no mistake: Trump’s attack on the American mind — on education, science, libraries, and museums — is an attack on the capacity of Americans for self-government.

It is coming from the oligarchs of the techno-state who believe democracy is inefficient and want to replace it with an authoritarian regime replete with technologies they control.
