people actually went on about how game of thrones made it socially acceptable to be a fantasy nerd, as though the lord of the rings movies hadn't been released less than a decade earlier and left far greater cultural ripples and i am just

got may have made the adults feel better about liking fantasy, but lotr got into the kids' heads when they (we) were just young and impressionable enough to be absolutely transported and emotionally rewritten by don't you leave him, samwise gamgee and my brother, my captain, my king and and rohan will answer

lotr was rewriting entire generations' brain chemistry long before asoiaf and so obviously it's not fair to compare any post-lotr fantasy novel to it, and each book series was trying to do different things within their own spheres and so that also is not a fair comparison, but in terms of the cultural impact of the adaptations that came out within a decade of each other, saying that it was game of thrones that made fantasy mainstream is baffling

#lotr #lord of the rings #lord of the rings movies #i started this post because ''may it be'' came up on my playlist but now i think i'm going to start my nth rewatch of the trilogy #there is a lot to discuss about it re: comparison to the books but it's like...#for all the changes they made - good and bad and neutral - everyone involved in making the films *loved* the source material #they all *wanted* to do justice to it and believed in it and it shows #i think of some posts i've seen about how frustrating this modern push towards tongue-in-cheek irony over sincerity #so afraid to be corny or cheesy that you have to tack a joke onto every real emotional moment #like no fuck that #give me sam hauling frodo onto his shoulders saying ''i can't carry it for you but i can carry you''#give me aragorn gently kissing boromir's forehead as he dies #give me merry and pippin throwing themselves at the uruk hai to distract them from frodo #give me theoden's grand speeches and gandalf's pained expression when frodo says he'll carry the ring #tbh i think that sincerity is a large part of *why* it has such staying power even now #because it is a story you are meant to get deeply emotionally invested in and not hold yourself a little ironically apart from #it isn't meant to sell merch it's meant to bring you to middle-earth and capture your heart and make you believe that the war can be won #with love and loyalty and hope and fellowship and fidelity and integrity and just... just refusing to give in to despair #it is earnest. it is unafraid to be melodramatic or corny because it believes in the story it's telling.#and so it imprinted onto a whole generation growing up right at the cusp of a barrage of apocalypses #anyway. i have Feelings about these movies and their impact and how that mirrors and enhances the books' own impact

it’s sooo fucked up that boromir’s last words were “I’ve failed.” literally sooososo fucked up

#lotrposting #it’s interesting how the scene in the movie & specifically what boromir says differs from the book tho #I mean they made it more dramatic for the film obviously but also the speech in which he essentially accepts aragorn as the/his king #while in the book he specifically calls the people of minas tirith his Own people; not aragorn’s #elli rambles #also fun fact I watched the fellowship of the ring with my brother a few days ago #and after boromir’s death scene my brother (who normally thinks shipping is stupid and I always try to make everything gay)#said ‘okay yeah I ship them now’#and he seemed pretty serious? so gay win 🌈💖 (getting my brother who is occasionally homophobic by accident (often either bc he wants to #annoy me or just by virtue of being a thirteen year old cishet boy)) to ship two guys #anyway. I’m not even especially fond of the lad (he’s. fine. shrug. good for showing the power & danger of the ring even on good people)#but this is soo evil to me. he redeemed himself through fighting for merry & pippin (or at least if you see it like that) but his last #thought was that he’d died in dishonour and as a failure #he couldn’t withstand the power of the ring and couldn’t return to protect his home #also aragorn choosing to keep boromir’s betrayal a secret so that it wouldn’t tarnish gimli and legolas’s memory of him…#tolkien

I just gotta say. After watching tng and moving on to ds9, I can't speak for any of the other captains but. Any of the scenes with Picard that are supposed to be moving or inspiring or emotional- ain't shit compared to the fucking HEART that Avery Brooks put into playing Captain Sisko

Oh gawd. I'd forgotten how sad Theoden's death was. It's tragic in the movies but it's 10x more sob-worthy in the books. Here I am making brownies for a birthday party and about to add salt water to the mix. I don't even cry much at stuff but dang if it doesn't get me every time. I suppose it's appropriate that his death is what makes me weep given it would have done the same to Eowyn

will say one piece is by no means the best story in the world but it definitely holds the record for the amount of times any kind of art has made me cry. that shit has had me bawling easily 20 times in like 350 something episodes

EDIT: i counted it was 33 times in about 350 episodes so like. once every 10 episodes on average

#second place goes to last words of a shooting star by mitski :muscle:#sigh. dog from orange town usopps moms death kuinas monologue kuinas death. donkriegs first mate starving to death sanjis backstory.#zoros defeat from mihawk. nojikos death nami getting the courage to ask luffy for help. i am on like episode 30 at this point in these tags #i have cried easily like 4 seperate times at the zoro backstory just thinking abt it and rewatching it #labboons self harm and then his resolution to meet with luffy again.#like 3 seperate times in drum island. when chopper got all beaten up trying to fetch the mushroom.#dr hiriluks speech/death. then whenever chopper runs down the mountain to join the strawhats #alabasta really didnt make me cry but i like zoros littl emoment to shine in his fight a lot #the blackbeard speech about dreams.#the flashback with noland and like twice regarding that little girl who just wanted to have a couple of handfuls of dirt.#and fucking water 7/enies lobby #i do not know how many times i cried that arc.#usopp getting beaten up. frankys backstory. usopp/luffys fight. cried at least like 5-6 times thinking about usopp leaving crew.#robins backstory twice both when her mom died and when she set out to sea and kept doing that silly little laugh.#the 'i want to live' moment. the going merrys death montage thingy.#at this point im lik pretty early into fuckin. thriller bark and no tearful moments yet #im gonna go back through these tags and count.#33 #jeez louise!#idk if its a very emotionally poignant show or if i have just been more tearful as of late. idk.
