Must be a year ago now. I was in a cab with a German friend. I must have mentioned how I consider going out on Indian roads as act of bravery and how each outing is like a call to death. Anything could happen to you. I'm fact, I have always felt long train, bus, flight journeys as some kind of closer to death experiences. The relief I get when I reach the destination safely is just too much to hold. I was told I was overthinking. Then I explained how we Indians are so many that a few hundred of us vanishing does not register in people's heads as some danger. Close to 300 died in Balasore train tragedy. Even half of that number anywhere in world and people in top would have resigned as matter of responsibility and accountability. In India, we had railway minister chant Bharti Mata ki Jai at crash site. When Prime Minister visited the site there were chants of "Jai Shri Ram"! Yes. People are so numb to deaths. And these were people on the site, many of whom saw the dead bodies and their parts lying around. They had sense of mind intact to chant "Jai Shri Ram" when Modi appeared on scene. They weren't numb in pain. Deaths were not significant event to move them. It was a regular event. We are all so used to avoidable deaths in India that we just take deaths for granted. Unless of course it's someone rich who dies. A celebrity dying of heart disease, a Mistry dying in car accident will have us bothered for so many days. In fact, Mistry car crash pressurised Modi minister to frame new rules and such. Because a rich person dying is abysmally rare in India. Rich person's death counts because it is rare. Their tribe is small too. They own most of the wealth but their numbers themselves are small. So it matters when one of them dies. Rest of us can die everyday in hundreds and it would not register in our heads. We are too many. Take a drop from ocean and who would care? Why would anyone care?

Just remember this when you are out.
