bq25185 + TPS61023 = USB or Solar lipoly with 5V output 🔋☀️🔌
We spent the weekend tweaking our bq25185
https://www.digikey.com/short/8hd2778w
designs and made one basic breakout for this flexible battery charging chip. Then, we made a board with a 3.3V buck output to charge the battery with a USB or solar panel and got a clean and consistent 3.3V out. With both of those working, here's a design for a version that has a 5V booster with the TPS61023
, which gives a nice clean 1A with a small bill of materials. Now you can use USB, DC, or solar to charge your favorite lipoly or liion chip and get 5V output. Maybe we'll make a version that can handle 3.6V LiFePO4 batteries, too? It's easy to set the bq to handle those by changing a single resistor.

Trinamical stepper breakout with TMC2209
About two weeks ago, we designed a breakout for the A4988
https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/11/the-a4988-is-a-classic-stepper-driver-in-a-new-fit/
and we're still waiting for those prototype PCBs, but we're not one to wait, because we think that the idea is a good one…so why not design another version? This time with the Trinamic TMC2209
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/TMC2209-LA-T/10232491
This is a similar "Step & Dir" type driver, with a wide motor range of 4.75 – 28 Volts and separate 3~5V IO pin. It has a couple nifty upgrades, though: like a diagnostic error output, index out so you know if you dropped a microstep, OTP config memory, and a half-duplex UART pin that you can use to configure and read stats from the chip. We kept the direction/step LEDs and the current-limit-set potentiometer, changed a few pins around, and voila! What do you think?

The first test for our WLED board codename "Sparkle Motion" 🌈💖💡 … 🐇⏳🌌
We got our WLED-friend PCBs today, and we only made one mistake: the wrong resistor on the 3.3V feedback line. Now that it's fixed, the board seems to work great with the latest version of WLED
We are checking all 4 signal outputs with this handy 256-LED grid that sits on our desk. Next, we will test the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C. We'll also do an Arduino IDE board definition in case folks want to use it as a generic ESP32-to-LED-driver board. We're calling the board "Sparkle Motion" for now, but if you have other naming ideas, let us know - if we pick your name, you get a free board
Sign up, coming soon.

Wooo, this one is for all of our fans of fans.

We got some 5V USB-cable fan samples, and we're testing them out. These are handy when you need air cooling or to add motion to lightweight robotics. They come in various sizes, from petite 4cm to bountiful 9cm, and have two mesh screens to keep wires and fingers from getting caught in the blades.

Testing PIO support for RP1 chips on Pi 5 Computers
Ladyada tasked Jepler with exploring the new libPIO for Raspberry Pi 5 computers: this gives us access to the RP1 chip so that we can run custom PIO state machines on the GPIO pins. A common use case is NeoPixels, because of the tight timing requirements of the WS281x LEDs. Here is our first light test that shows it is possible…

PCM5102 and PCM5100 I2S DAC breakouts 🔊🎶
We're starting to stock a lot of chips that can do digital I2S out, which makes for great-quality audio playback. That's great when you have enough processing power to decode WAVs or MP3s in real-time. However, we could really use some better DACs in the shop. We like the UDA1334A (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3678), but that's technically discontinued - it's great because it doesn't require an MCLK that some boards like the Raspberry Pi don't have and doesn't need I2C configuration either.
The PCM510x is a good family, too; it ranges from the inexpensive PCM5100 (https://www.digikey.com/short/z50cnp0h) to the PCM5102 (https://www.digikey.com/short/80z2nh3h) which has high quality output at a higher cost. This breakout could use any of the family chips & gives you all the GPIO needed with a 3.5mm headphone jack for line-level output. We're testing it out with some cool tunes from the adafruit soundcloud, check it out! (https://soundcloud.com/adafruit).

Festival of lights - night #5 0.85" 128x128 TFT breakout 🎆🌈
We're doing 8 days of light-filled designs to wrap up this year. We started with the Sparkle Motion Mini
which can drive thousands of shimmering RGB LEDs. Then, we did the Sparkle Motion stick, a USB-pluggable version
On the third night, a 1.28" round TFT display
, and on the fourth a 1.8" round TFT with captouch overlay
. we've over the hump and still going strong! Tonight, we did a 0.85" TFT breakout; it's 128x128 pixels and so tiny we had to put the breakout pads on opposite sides.

Festival of Lights - Night #4 1.8" Round TFT with Captouch ✨💡📲👈🎨
To wrap up this year, we're doing 8 days of light-filled designs. We started with the Sparkle Motion Mini
which can drive thousands of shimmering RGB LEDs. Then, we did the Sparkle Motion stick, a USB-pluggable version
. On the third night, a 1.28" round TFT display
. Today, we're doing another TFT display, this time a 360x360 pixel IPS TFT that is also round and comes with a captouch display. we're going with SMT headers for breadboard-friendly usage and EYESPI for a compact connection. since we think folks may want a compact mounting solution, we put some SMT nuts on the back so the display PCB is perfectly round.
