R x J Week 2024 Day 1: Pride

Five days. Five whole days. One work week.

That was how long they’d been fighting.

Or at least, Usagi thought that Rei and Jad had been fighting. Really, she didn’t even know what the start of it was.

She’d heard second hand from Minako that the two had been shouting at one another early last week and that was all Usagi needed to know.

Which, unfortunately, meant she would have to ask one of them to get to the root of the problem. And from the way Jad had been kneading that dough for the past five minutes…

Usagi reached over and tapped him on the shoulder.

The scowl that met her called to mind the time when he had been under the control of the Dark Kingdom, but it quickly melted away when he realized just who it was.

“Usagi,” he said, surprise coloring his features, “I was expecting—what are you doing here?”

“Oh, I just wanted to say hi,” Usagi said, “You know, I was in the area.”

Jad frowned, returning to his previous task.

“In Rei’s kitchen?”

“I was… hungry…”

A pregnant pause stretched across the room, to the point where Usagi wanted to tug her own pigtails to relieve the tension.

“Well, lunch probably won’t be ready for about another hour,” Jad said, “so you’re in for a wait.”

“I’m fine with that.”

Anyone who knew Usagi would know she wouldn’t be fine with that. If she had truly been hungry, that is. She had, in fact, just come from an early lunch with Mamoru, which they had only had to fortify themselves for what they were currently doing.

Another pause, more tension. Probably best to rip the band aid off.

“So,” Usagi began, hands clasped behind her back, “how’s it going?”

“Fine.”

“You’re sure? No stomach problems, nothing too stressy going on?”

“Can’t think of anything.”

He didn’t even look up! Usagi fought down a pout.

“If anything was wrong, you’d tell one of us, right?”

“You mean like a certain someone refusing to apologize?”

Usagi wasn’t sure if this was progress, but hopefully it was.

“Maybe…”

Jad put plastic wrap over the dough he’d been working over and moved to another counter where a knife and vegetables waited for him.

“When Rei’s ready to apologize, she knows where to find me,” he said, dicing a red onion.

“But what if you apologized first?” Usagi asked, moving so she was just at Jad’s immediate left, “Then everything would be fine and none of our meetings would have any really weird tension…”

“I’m not apologizing when she’s the one at fault here.”

Usagi’s face fell. Plan A was a bust, it seemed.

“Can you at least talk to her? I know you care so much about each other and I hate seeing my friends fight.”

For a moment, Jad paused and Usagi thought she had a breakthrough. Instead, Jad returned to his task.

“Please!” Usagi said, “for me?”

Jad said nothing, focusing instead on his veggie slicing.

“Oh, come on! I know you heard me!”

Still, nothing.

“Vegetables aren’t that interesting!”

As if in answer, Jad moved to the fridge and removed a package of hamburger from it.

Usagi sighed and left the kitchen. Hopefully, Mamoru was having better luck with Rei.

“When Jad’s ready to apologize, he knows where to find me.”

Mamoru ran a frustrated hand through his hair. Rei had been holed up beside the sacred fire for every day since her apparent argument with Jad (At least according to the other senshi).

Mamoru could understand the desire for solitude after feeling hurt, but this felt ridiculous.

“Can you at least tell me what he did to make you so upset?”

“Why don’t you ask him?”

“What if he doesn’t know?”

Rei didn’t say anything after that, seemingly staring at the sacred fire.

Most people would have thought she was just haughtily ignoring him at that point.

Most people couldn’t feel human emotions like raindrops on their skin.

Anger, confusion, sadness, they all flickered from Rei like ashes. And for some reason, maybe it was psychic powers, maybe it was a gut feeling, but Mamoru knew Rei wouldn’t elaborate any further.

The two of them collapsed on the couch in Mamoru’s apartment. How a conversation with friends could be so draining was beyond either of them.

“So,” Usagi began, “how’s Rei?”

Mamoru sighed.

“Angry. Too proud to admit anything.”

Usagi’s frown deepened.

“And Jad’s the same way.”

Mamoru sighed. He should have expected. Those two really were made for each other.

“I hope he wasn’t too rude to you,” he said, putting his arm around Usagi's shoulder. She snuggled all the closer.

"He was a perfect gentleman... just like he is with Rei."

"I'm glad you're still optimistic about them."

"They'll work it out," Usagi said, "you'll see."

I got greedy and couldn't decide on just one.

✨What's a fic you've posted you wish you could breathe life into again and have people talking about it? (or simply a fic you wish got more credit)

I kid! I kid! (mostly). I mean, I do want all of my fics to be loved by the masses, but I would love to see my series Out of Yesterday's Ashes get more love. I'm really proud of that series, and I think it's some of my best writing. I also would love to see Face in the Crowd get more attention. Every so often, I try to write things that I don't see a ton of in the Zutara fandom- this one in particular is my second attempt at a mystery story (first being The Harbinger Bloom). I know that popularity can't be the main goal of fic writing because what gets popular is so unpredictable, no matter how well or poorly written a story is, but I had hoped that by writing genres that don't get written often would bump me up. Don't ask me why, it made sense at the time. Still, I like how these stories turned out.

💘Is there any posted fic you want to rework/re-edit/re-write?

LOL! There are bits and pieces of most of my stories I re-read and wish I had done a bit differently, but I won't. Otherwise I'd never finish a story. One that I really would like to redo is Looking For You. I...can explain. I am proud of this story's premise. I like how it turned out for the most part, but I was a very young writer. I tried too hard to be funny. I included references that I wouldn't have added now. I made Usagi a skater! I don't know what I was drinking to make me do that! I'm going to be cross posting this fic on Ao3 soon, and I don't know if I want to rewrite it or post it as is and include a HUGE disclaimer in the notes. Maybe I'll get around to doing both? I don't know. I don't want to shame baby Badger, but...I'll say this, Looking For You is definitely my most fanfic-y fanfic.

What if...? Sailor Moon Muse AU account

Yeah so I made an AU account for my muses. There are far better Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino RPers out there...and so I wanted to try my hand at another tale.

The What if Universe, is "What if Mamoru and the reborn Shitenou were the ones fighting the Youma of the week while looking for the Silver Crystal and the Princess?

The Another Life AU: is...what if one of the many times Usagi had her and the Senshi reborn...she was reborn as Victoria? (Saban Moon)

Anyway, its more 90's anime centric. Please give it a chance?

Sailor Moon Season Mashup: A story idea

I just had an idea I've got to share and hopefully inspire someone to write. An aged-up season mashup where the first season and the latter half of the second come together.

Basically, when the Nijizuishou Arc is happening Usa and the others are in their early to mid twenties. Usa and Mamo are pining for each other but don't want to act on their feelings because they don't want to endanger each other in the event their identities are found out so they make the best of their situation by getting together with their partner-in-youma-fighting/not-quite-ally-or-enemy because at least if they're discovered as being together they know they can protect themselves.

And then, the Reveal.

It's during the time of Mamo's conversion, Usa doesn't know if he's dead or alive and depressed that the man she's been pining for and wanting to be with is also the man she's unknowingly been with because she didn't know she could be with him, that a strange little girl with hair in a familiar style lands in Usa's lap while at the park for some fresh air. And to get away from her well meaning friends' smothering. Said little girl is stunned that she's landed in the lap of someone who looks so much like her Mama that she just starts crying and apologizing. It's all her fault after all. Usa gets her calmed down before taking her home, she's been SM for a while now and whatever instincts she's honed however long are telling her to not let the girl go off alone. That she's important and she needs protection and, depression over her lost love or not, she's gonna give it to her, damn it!

I think you see where I'm going with this. Instead of the 'breakup' that happened in the second half of the 90s R season it's that Mamo is Dendy when Chibi makes her appearance. Diamond wants Serenity, as always, and, what joy of joys, they've come to a past in which the King has married a different Queen (obviously he hasn't but the minds of the obsessed work in mysterious ways in order to fit reality into their narrative). And lo and behold, because Diamond knew the King was only in it for the power she could wield, the Senshi are fighting against the King, not with him because he wants the Ginzuishou for his 'new' Queen; Diamond's ecstatic. Because it means Serenity's his for the taking. No marital vows of fidelity. No spawn that man planted in her beautiful body to trap her into marrying him in the first place. She probably hasn't even been tasted yet, never known the pleasures of a woman fully grown. But he wouldn't mind being the one to teach her. No, no, he'd do so gleefully.

Thing is, despite the many precautions that SM and TK took whenever they were intimate, Time will always try to find a way to keep the future it wants to happen preserved, even if it doesn't happen the way it should. Usa is, unknowingly for now, pregnant when Mamo's kidnapped. The Key is acting as a shield, not that Chibi knows that yet, against the Law that says "Past and Future must not be in the same space for long." It's keeping Chibi's presence from affecting her Past self while being in said Past.

But now, the Senshi are being run ragged because they're being attacked on two fronts because a surprise second enemy faction came out of the woodwork, they're not gonna ally with people trying to hurt/kill a child, while they were still fighting against their first while also trying to make money at their jobs and keep a surprise child fed, clothed and safe from said second enemy faction. Usa's not gonna let her family be targeted, even if she has to claim of secretly being a teen mother who recently, finally, got her baby back; being an adult in this AU Usa can't help but act like the Mama she's claiming to be to Chibi. It's feels scarily easy, she tells the others, there just seems to be a connection she can't ignore, and she doesn't want to. Then there's how certain Shittenou are being weirdly protective of certain Senshi (you figure out how to justify not killing them off) when the Ayakashi Sisters try to nab them time and again, and said certain Senshi gets frantic returning the favor (you choose whether the sisters are saved like in the 90s anime or not) when the Ayakashi sisters try to kill them for interfering which they don't understand why! They're the enemy! ...Aren't they? Not to mention the hullabaloo caused by the miracle worker Dr. Chiba going missing so suddenly even though there are multiple people calling in saying they've seen him here and there but it's just Endou. And poor Chibi, unknowing she's Found Out and Realized, can't seem to stand letting Usa out of her sight if she can help it. (She really is Mama! She's alright and not sleeping, maybe dying, in a Crystal Tomb because she was a bad girl.) Clings to SM whenever she saves her and only tends to let go when she mentions getting her to her Mama. Crying silently whenever she gets a glimpse of TK when she's near the battlefield and trembling like she's holding herself back from... something whenever she sees Endou on the street. (She wants her Papa to hold and comfort her, he claimed time and again that there's nothing in the world to keep him from loving her Mama and she wants to know why?! Why did he lie?!)

You can choose whether or not the BMC and the DK ally with one another and actually try to help keep Usa and Mamo apart or try to make them properly fight against each other, but ultimately (obviously) fail, or go the route of Ail and An in trying to kill the one in order to have the other, making excuses to keep the other sweet when they fail, and damn the feelings of the one who's obsession is killed because they have what they want. And/or Metallia and Wiseman team up in the background while the two fools who act as their respective puppet leader get destroyed alongside the Senshi they're fighting against while their own plans come to some form of fruition.

Let’s review some of the Headcannons I’ve used with my Senshi/Shitensou series or elements I hope to use in the future: 

Bedroom/house/living quarters headcanon

Crystal Tokyo happened with everyone living in separate wings of the palace. 

Beforehand, Mamoru and Usagi bought a home, preparing for Chibi-Usa even if they didn’t become King and Queen. 

Jadeite worked at the Hikawa shrine attempting to show Rei he has changed. 

Nephrite and Makoto lived together saving for her to buy her bakery. 

Ami continued to live at the apartment she shared with her mom, eventually moving in with Zoisite when they got married. 

Minako, although she briefly shared an apartment with Usagi, usually spent most of her time at Kunzite’s place. 

Luna does her best to stay with Usagi and Mamoru by having them work out a hand gesture system to the cat now she should make herself scarce. 

Sex headcanon

Mars & Jadeite: Rei and Jadeite often appear to be in a loveless marriage by people who don’t know them. This is because they share so much passion for each other, it takes very little physical affection for them to end up in bed together. (I used this in Captured Spy)

Jupiter & Nephrite: As I said in @sailorheadcanons post: Makoto and Nephrite enjoy being very aggressive during their love making usually resulting in collateral damage. They have destroyed 8 beds, numerous lamps and vases, and a poor roomba that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. (really need to use this one in the future)

Mercury & Zoisite: Despite when many think, Ami is one of the first to become physical when she reunites with her Shitensou lover. This happens in many reincarnations as Ami finds it difficult to articulate her feelings for her beloved. (Kinda used this in The Healing Properties of Mercury). 

Venus & Kunzite: Are switches who work to explore each other’s fetishes extensively. Kunzite especially is down to try anything as he has a slight worry Minako would find someone else if he refused. Minako is well aware this is the one area of his life Kunzite lacks confidence and does her best to be reassuring he’s all she needs. (I haven’t explored this as much as I wanted but I have so many Kunzite/Minako series right now I won’t explore it for a while). 

Endymion and Serenity: I explore this extensively in my “Royal Affairs” series.  

Luna and Artemis: Luna is actually well aware of how she treats Artemis and flirts with handsome men like Yaten intentionally. Once she found out how animalistic he got when he was jealous, Luna couldn’t help herself. (This was actually going to the sixth entry in the “After the Cauldron” series but when I got a low reception to that Andrea Hui)

Family headcanon

The Sailor Amazons are reborn as the children of the Senshi and Shitensou, giving them the opportunity to come from loving families as they grow up to eventually be Chibi-Usa’s guardians. The second batch of children are Kousagi and the girls shown in Sailor Moon: Parallel Moon (who I renamed as just calling them Junior after their mothers seemed lame).

Fanfic and fan art, as well as a pretty big catalogue of SM-inspired electronic music and filk

What do you enjoy about creating for the SM fandom?

Well, who doesn't love feedback? But also, I love how it's so big and so old that even rarepairs have dedicated, devoted followings.

Are you strictly UsaMamo or do you create for other pairings as well?

I'm actually mostly not UsaMamo anymore since lots of people have them covered so well-- the vast bulk of my stuff centers on Mamoru or Endymion and the Shitennou (shipping or gen), with a reasonable helping of MakoNeph.

What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?

They are the healthiest non-boring young-to-old couple I know of in fiction. Plus they're adorable.

Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?

Definitely multiple WIPs at a time. [looks sheepishly at huge stack going back to 2016]

Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?

It depends on my mood! But considering I think of 20k as a longfic (for me) I probably count as all small projects, lmao.

Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?

Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?

TBH I want to do time travel stuff. More time travel stuff, I did one previously. Also, some weirder AUs. Like I still want to do SM x World of Darkness, hahahaha.

Can I offer some alternative Senshi/Shitennou pairs? Some of this is inspired by the 90s anime and PGSM.

Ami/Nephrite: Okay I first loved these two from PGSM. But when I really think about them we could get an adorable shy girl x cool guy. Okay look, the first version of Sailor Moon I ever saw was the DiC dub. And Nephrite always came off as the cool guy. And I can't help but thinks he looks like a guy from an 80s Hair Metal Band (Nephrite did you give us that She's Got the Power abomination?). So yes this could be adorable.

Rei/Kunzite: They are both very serious, powerful, and usually presented as the most mature of their group. (Although we didn't get to see much of the Shitennou.)

Ami/Kunzite: I could see him wanting his partner to be a very intelligent person and her liking someone that is mature and calm.

Makoto/Zoisite: Okay look, the first version of Zoisite I ever knew was the 90s anime. He was either a bloodthirsty lady or and effeminate man in love with Kunzite. So I always see him as the most feminine of the Shitennou and I see him as non binary. (Except for Dub Zoisite, she's a transwoman). In the anime, Zoisite uses petals to teleport. What does Makoto want to do with her life? Run a cake and flower shop. Zoisite would love to work there. Now let's also imagine that he'd love for his girlfriend to be a touch masculine and very dominate. I always imagined Makoto being bisexual and she'd love her nonbinary partner.

Minako/Nephrite: Because I can't help but see Nephrite as a bit of a rockstar, these two could be a rockstar couple. They could both be in a punk band taking turns with the vocals.

Ami/Jadeite: Okay, Jadeite is the hardest one to place. I feel like I have the least to go off of him. But Ami is more passive than her friends and doesn't like to be noticed. And Jadeite sticks out the least of the Shitennou. They could walk down the street and not have many eyes on them.

Zoisite/Minako: The most beautiful couple ever. And if anything I could see these two being good friends.

Kunzite/Mamoru: I mean does anyone else think it would be kind of funny given the 90s anime? Think evil Mamoru seducing Kunzite and being the top. Kink fic anyone?

Usagi/Zoisite: These two could be a chaotic duo. And if they need a decoy Sailor Moon Zoisite would volunteer in an instant. God now I have an image of the two doing it while Zoi is dressed up like Sailor Moon.

Usagi/Kunzite: Does Usagi deserve a beautiful powerful knight?

Mamoru/Zoisite: in a world where Queen Beryl doesn't kill Zoisite for losing the silver crystal. Evil Mamoru steals Kunzite's man and taunts him over it. Kink fic anyone?

i like reinako a lot but i'm generally not hella invested in rei or minako unless i'm purposely thinking about either one, so i don't have as many Feels about them as some other ships-- but i think they'd actually be super healthy for at least thirty years starting when they're about 40

i LOVE them. i dont ship anyone in BSSM with only one other person, and i multiship so i can do parallel AU exclusive ships, and lets look at this as one of those so it doesnt get tangled in my mamoru x shitennou polycule--

they are horrible for each other in the DK because there is *nothing good* in the love department of the DK, BUT it is all-- i am CONVINCED it's all subversions of a really much healthier love from before the DK, and they cling to each other as the last piece of happiness theyre otherwise denied from a history they don't remember

not sure i'm doing this right but gosh it's delightful low-effort fun!

Usagi’s dad gets Mamoru to become her tutor for Biology because Ami’s methods were clearly not working. Leading to higher grades for Usagi, but also a lot of miscommunications and half truths spoken that will have to be cleared up.

Why does both Sailor Moon and Star Wars hurt me so much????

But no I was thinking yesterday that the two series I always go back two are Star Wars and Sailor Moon. They deal with vaguely similar things-star-crossed love, opposites attract, space, good vs evil but in very different tones. Padme had her handmaidens, Usagi had her senshi, Mamoru had his shitennou.

But also, both series have different "verses." Star Wars started with the 6 movies, Sailor Moon started with the manga, but both exploded with books/tv shows/etc, and as a writer, it is so much fun to have so much to draw from. I can say oh, I'm doing a story set in "canon" but with Jedi Apprentice backstory vs the canon books of that time period. I can seamlessly mix canon, legends, animation, and movie to make characters and settings that are like quilts. A bit of my favorite authors and a bit of me.

Same with Sailor Moon. I can choose to say work on a Helios/Chibiusa idea that has the Crystal Tokyo that's a mish/mash of 90s anime and manga with most of the Senshi/Shitennou couples inspired by that one drawing BUT with Naru and Nephrite from the 90s anime AND also have the Sailor Quartet from the manga/Crystal. Just drawing bits and pieces from everywhere to make the future I want. Or do a more 90s anime centric Season 1 but with the Shitennou being Mamoru's guardians in the past and the Senshi x Shitennou romance. Even just like dub vs sub vs Viz dub can differ. (And when I say S x S romance, I do have different headcanons for all of them, all 4 are very different relationships. Not all are straight forward romance)

Like some of my most basic headcanons for both series mixes canons.

It's just so much more fun and freeing to mix different canons, to piece them together like puzzle pieces without having to have only one canon, one way of things being done. Way more little lore to draw from. And it's interesting that my two lifelong series(Along with Pokemon games) have the same basic makeup of multiple verses to draw from. Does anyone else feel this way?
