Glad I'm not the only one who's both delighted to see a full adaptation again and not looking forward to revisiting certain elements of it
Yeah! There are a lot of things I’m really excited to see animated! There are also a lot of things I’m wincing at now that I look at them as an adult with more knowledge and experience than my high school self. I really hope that people who are getting into the series for the first time can enjoy it without being blindsided by those bits, and that people a bit more qualified than me can put out some good media criticism regarding them as the series progresses.
(I’m also ready to apply mentally apply headcanons as needed while watching in order to enjoy the thing, because if I have watched DC this long i should be able to manage that)

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?Mostly frustration. I was irritated with how flatly the plot of X/Y fell, and then the build-up and letdown of the post-game plot just made it worse. Pokemon games are tailored to let the player take the place of the character, so it was easy to slip Brienne in with any sort of background.
3. What’s your favorite line of narration?Well, shit, I need to think about it. Frankly, it might be something I haven’t written yet, but that I know is coming up. I’mma be busy this Nano. With what I’ve got written so far (mind you I need to skim through 150K worth of words) I’d say…“Stars among multitudes of stars revealed themselves in the night sky, as if some great creator had tried to shove as many points of light into the inky black as they could and still call it ‘night.’ The rim of the galactic cluster ripped a line of pale, pastel white across the depths, brighter than she’d even seen from the Milky Way galaxy in her own sky. Gentle curls waved off the main path like the searching tendrils of a vine. The moon was a thin, bright crescent of white in one impossible corner of that night sky.”
4. What’s your favorite line of dialogue?Pretty sure it’s this: “The last time someone said ‘don’t worry about it,’ I found myself running through a closed park in the middle of the night to get away from the cops. That does not reassure me.” (True story, too!)
7. Where did the title come from?Me wracking my brain so that I didn’t have a shitty title like my first YGO fic did. More seriously: I guess it’s from the fact that I always knew that Bri, in fic, would look at things a little differently. And that since the antagonist is all about ‘beauty,’ the phrase made sense.
14. Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?Patience. That violence isn’t always the answer, but it’s okay to have actions stemming from anger or rage. That your feelings are always valid, but what matters is what you do with those feelings. Making families of choice can be hard, but always worth it in the end.
15. What did you learn from writing this fic?Ugh, SO MUCH. How to sit down and write for hours at a time. How to write battle scenes. I couldn’t write battle scenes before this fic. How to really describe a scene beyond what the character can see. Personality. How to let my other characters grab the keyboard and write scenes I never expected.

Anyone wanna hear about my witch Aoko, Shinichi,...
Kazuha (dammit phone) but am very curious about how this applies to Aoko
Mmmmkay!
So, Kazuha is a white witch, with the animal theme of the Honduran White Bat. White magic is powered by emotions, must be used willfully, and is better at support areas (wards, charms, sense amplification, etc) than offensive (transformations, hexes, transportation, etc). This makes her omamoris very effective, even without her knowing.
Aoko is a blue witch, with the animal theme of the Holly Blue Butterfly. Blue magic is physically driven, must be used with intent (red and black magic will work passively, without the user needing to think about it), and good for physical endeavors.
Witches will use magic from the other colors, but are best for the type they have an affinity for, and Aoko has been unconsciously using white magic, which has protected Kaito from Akako’s red magic wiles. Unknowingly using blue magic is what lets her do powerful physical things, such as easily lifting a desk, insane reflexes, super quiet sneaking, etc.
Intent, in this case, is intent to perform an action, rather than intent to use magic.

Cool Asks For Fic Writers: 1, 6, 8, 10, 18, 19, 20
1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing. What caught your attention first was her figure. Short, bold, heavily curvy with a chest most women would kill for and one she would probably kill to lessen. Hourglass shape softened by the bit of pudge to her stomach. Her stance said confidence, arms folded and weight on one hip. Her glance said shy, only glimpsing at eye contact before darting away. A short, asymmetrical pixie cut of brown hair crowned her head, wide rectangular glasses offsetting a round face. Her eyes and cheeks lent her face more to smiling than frowning, bright.
6. First fic/pairing you wrote for? (If no pairing, describe the plot)Shiiiiiiiit. I really gotta think back for this one. I want to say a Yu-Gi-Oh fic, just as the DOMA plot was really getting into stride? So somewhere in 2006? I don’t remember the plot and I kinda don’t want to, I mentally embarrass myself enough as it is, I don’t need to do it more. If it helps, that original fic morphed into Illusory Love, which is on my ffnet account. If you want to read some bad writing. That was a self-insert OC/Yugi pairing. I was just starting high school at the time, so I needed the self-esteem boost.
8. Why do you choose to write?Anger and Spite and the NEED to create. You’d be surprised what you can come up with when you’re pissed as hell. Creativity doesn’t always have to come from a happy place, though it can and often does. Anger can be as much of an inspiration as joy, or sadness. Also the need for Satisfaction. Those are my big motivators.
10. What inspires you the most?Sometimes it’s the most random of things. Usually, like above, it’s anger. Something pissed me off. All my friends will tell you, I get really creative when I’m ragingly angry. My rants can be beautiful pieces of work in and of themselves.
18. How old were you when you started writing?Shit, I don’t know. The youngest I can definitely remember is 12/13. I do have a vague memory of trying to write something at age 5 or 6, but giving up pretty easily for a long while.
19. Why did you start writing?Frankly? I got tired of the damn story writing itself in my head and I wanted it OUT. I had a habit of disassociating a LOT when I was younger (still do, a little) and I would fill the ‘missing time’ with stories.I also enjoy the description and pull that words give when crafted properly.
20. 4 sentences from your work that you’re proud of.(May have to cheat at this a little bit. There’s a lot I’m proud of. Also, some of it isn’t posted yet, and won’t be for a long while.)“Something ancient and hereditary in the very deepest part of her mind saw the Horns and understood why this world had such a reverence for their Gods still.” – Eyes of the Beholder, Chapter 19, 'Do You Got Room For One More Troubled Soul?’“Fuck continuity straight up the stable time loop.” –Unposted Looker Missions fic.“Your research was never correct, Xerosic!” she yelled. “Anything that can take away the free will and consent of another sentient being will always be wrong. And I will risk everything that I am to end this, not only as a detective, or Champion, but as Emma’s big sister, you piece of shit!” –Unposted Looker Missions fic.“Stars among multitudes of stars revealed themselves in the night sky, as if some great creator had tried to shove as many points of light into the inky black as they could and still call it ‘night.’ The rim of the galactic cluster ripped a line of pale, pastel white across the depths, brighter than she’d even seen from the Milky Way galaxy in her own sky. Gentle curls waved off the main path like the searching tendrils of a vine. The moon was a thin, bright crescent of white in one impossible corner of that night sky.” –Eyes of the Beholder, Chapter 10, 'I’ve Got It, Just Breathe’

Fanfic ask meme: C, X, Y, Z
C: What character do you identify with most?
I always tend to identify with all the characters I write to some extent, so it often changes depending on who I’m writing more of at the time. But - at the moment, I’d still say Phoenix Wright. Because he tries to stay positive, has an overall depressive/sarcastic inner monologue, and has a good heart, wanting no one to go through things singled out and friendless. I can relate to all of those.
X: A character you enjoy making suffer.
I enjoy making all of the characters suffer as long as the pain actually, y’know, means something. Pain for pain’s own sake is boring and too close to real life for me to be honest. Pain/suffering that they’re able to come out of and are able to deal with the physical/mental/emotional fallout? give it to me.
Names, though, uh… Phoenix, Kuroba Kaito, Cyrus (Pokemon), the Master… could go on.
Y: A character you want to protect.
BILL POTTS. Let the girl be happy, yeah? And stop killing her maybe?
(Missy is under protection mainly for ‘stop telling people I’m dead’ reasons. Seriously, stop killing her, too.)
Z: Major character death–do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?
^^^ YUP. So, while I have sometimes written character death (I once killed Kaito off to make him a ghost, and I killed Edgeworth off once) I don’t really like to read it, or have it be canon, most of the time. I get rather angry at the ‘redemption equals death’ trope, too, because for me I’m far more interested in the storylines and development they could have if they, y’know, stayed alive. Much more painful for when they realise what they did wrong, too.
And as for ‘can’t tolerate’, I’d put Missy up there on number one at the moment.  Like, the attempt to kill the character off for good is pretty transparently not going to work permanently, but do I care about that? No.

11 Questions Tag: Writer Edition!
Tagged by @mangaluva (aaaa my fave writer noticed me)
1) How many works in progress do you currently have?
Counting original works:
1. My Otherworld setting, which I am currently working on the first book of. Modern fantasy with fairies! And super involved metaphysics because I enjoy that sort of thing
2. A web video series I’m doing with a good friend based on Dungeons and Dragons, which is currently in the first draft phase.
Counting D&D stuff:
3. A running journal for my character in a friend’s medieval stasis campaign, which I really need to take some time to work on. Maybe I should just put a few lines for each session? But that would be reductive...
4. Nihularian, a D&D setting of my own, which I plan to run at the end of this month/start of next month. I made like 12 new races, and the world is the inside surface of a sphere, because I am Just That Extra.
5. Nibelung, a D&D setting that I pumped out intending to run for my sister and her friends. It’s a lot more conventional than Nihularian, but I enjoyed putting in politics and magic.
btw I plan to run Fate Core, not d20. d20 would be too complicated to build a totally original setting in.
Counting fanfiction that I’ve at least started:
6. My Pokemon self-insert series, AKA my first fanfic, which is so dead I can’t even describe how dead it is. I had planned all the regions, and then crammed The Legend of Zelda and Kingdom Hearts onto the end with the same characters, because I was small but ambitious.
7. The Multiple Personalities of Artemis Fowl, AKA my second fanfic, which is dead because I was so disappointed in The Last Guardian I couldn’t write in that universe anymore.
8. Pokestar Studio Productions, which I swear I’ll work on again someday. I thought it would be fun to write fanfic chapters based on the Pokestar Studios movies from Pokemon Black 2 and White 2. Mostly it turned out to be tedious, but rewarding.
9. Satisfaction and Skating, which is the only fic I’ve completed an arc for. Hi, Check Please fanfic! We start you now! A Hamilton/Check Please crossover fic that I wrote for the Check Please Big Bang last year. Planning to write more of it this summer.
10. A Kingdom Hearts self-insert series I was working on with a friend, but never posted. It was a fun experiment in writing with a full co-author, and I’m still slowly plugging away at it for writing practice.
And now, counting fanfiction that I have at least partially planned, 90% because @a-canker-in-a-hedge is an enabler:
11. A Check Please/Pokemon crossover I toyed with before the release of Sun and Moon last year.
12. A Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812/Jupiter Ascending crossover, 30% because it would bring a better plot and 70% so I can do lavish descriptions of SPACE BAROQUE.
2) Do you/would you write fanfiction?
See above. I mostly write fanfic, because I think it’s fun. I do try to do something original with it, though, because I wasn’t raised on the fanfic conventions by which character interactions constitute a plot. I need to have some sort of external driver to what’s happening to enjoy what I’m writing.
3) Do you prefer real books or e-books?
In theory, e-books. In practice, real books.
I like the idea of e-books because then I could get rid of so much clutter in my house, and they make so much more sense than using dead tree to store all our words. But in practice, I can’t survive without the feeling of an actual book under my hands. But I won’t write in either; that’s blasphemous.
4) When did you start writing?
My first piece I remember was in Grade 1, but that was a class assignment and it’s only notable for being the first time a teacher said that I’d been really exceptional at something. I believe that I can call that a catalyst?
I posted my first fanfiction when I was 14/15, but started working on it when I was 11/12. I started doing original work in earnest about a year ago, when I was 18, once I started seriously thinking about doing a university creative writing program.
5) Do you have someone you trust to share your work with?
That would be @a-canker-in-a-hedge for my fanfic. I’m remarkably cagey about original WIPs, but once the draft is done to my satisfaction I will throw it at literally anyone I think can give me feedback. The more perspectives I can get, the better.
6) Where is your favourite place to write?
I plan on the bus or in other public places when I don’t have other entertainments. I have great ideas in the shower (and then desperately hope I won’t forget them). When I write by hand, it’s mostly in bed or on the couch, and when I write on the computer, it’s in my university’s library that I get the most done. I try to write from my desk a lot, but it never works. Tumblr calls to me...
7) Favourite childhood book?
The Redwall series by Brian Jacques. I reread it continually from when I was in Grade 3 to Grade 6, without ceasing for almost anything else. There were just enough surprises mixed in with Jacques’ formulas that I could be interested but never shocked, which was perfect for a kid who loved everything to be just so.
You could probably qualify the border between my childhood and adolescence by the point at which I put Redwall aside for good and dove into my high school’s fiction section to finally read Percy Jackson and Septimus Heap.
8) Writing for fun or writing for publication?
I’d like to add a third option: I write online for validation. What other skill do I have that people will adulate like my writing? None, that’s the answer.
For real, though, I write because it’s my favourite thing to do, and because I hope to someday get published/self-publish. As one of the TAs in my Creative Writing class this term said, if I had to stop writing I’d probably lose my mind, so I may as well use it to its best advantage.
9) Pen and paper or computer?
I write so much better by hand, especially when I have a plan. It forces me to think through what I’m about to write before I get there, and it distills my thoughts to make them more easily transferable to other people. You better believe I do all my planning by hand: I think in flowcharts and diagrams, and putting those into a digital universe is too time-consuming and involved to be practical.
However, my writing is more spontaneous on the computer, and it ends up... passable, I suppose. Because University, I rarely have the time to do a draft by hand followed immediately by drafting on the computer, so I write directly onto the computer based on the planning I did in my notebooks. If I had the time to do it all by hand, though, I would.
10) Have you ever taken any writing classes?
I decided to become an author in a grade 6 class called Reading Writing Workshop, because I was the best at it. I do a lot of things because I like being exceptional with minimal effort.
In the term I just finished at uni, I took a class on writing for children (there was a bit of good info) and last summer I took an introductory class on fiction writing at the university level (it was useless, and the classroom smelled of cleaning products).
The purpose of taking a writing class, I think, should be to force the students to produce a large volume of good work for deadlines, because that’s what I need to improve. The craft of writing is something that I, personally, learned primarily from reading voraciously, and from large amounts of practice and getting things wrong.
11) What inspires you to write?
Screaming with @a-canker-in-a-hedge.
Seriously, though, it’s reading, and playing games, and going ‘huh. that’s not how I would do that’. And then the idea takes root and suddenly there’s a new writing project. Often, I won’t actually write it until there’s a deadline, and then it will get done and it will be wonderful but I won’t be pleased because I couldn’t do it until the last minute and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
Anyways
I tag @a-canker-in-a-hedge, @sakura-deserved-better, @ohthewhomanity, and any other writers who happen to see this! Do the thing! Then write something!

so, I stole @captainkirkk‘s idea, and now present to you:
✩ WEEKLY FIC ROUND-UP ✩
All the fics I’ve read and really enjoyed in the past week-ish. NOT E-rating
ATLA
The (Mis)Adventures of Ambassador Sokka by:  That_Amazing_Asexual
starting with:  Diplomatic Immunity
Sokka may have done something mildly illegal. Only a third-degree felony, at the most. But that wasn’t the point.
Sir, This is My Emotional Support Turtleduck by BalrogDeMorgoth
A stressed out Zuko gets an Emotional Support Turtleduck, which he end up sharing with Azula. The Council learns to live with it.
A viper-lizard's tales by Yumi_Take
The desert sun burns and Zuko probably shouldn't touch the moving cloth, but he does anyway.
[PG: it’s just sooo cute! i really loved it!]
Hope Is A Mistake by Chuthulhu (Mangaluva), Mangaluva Zuko didn't escape the Fire Nation on the day of the eclipse. Azula decides to invite him to her coronation, setting off a chain of events involving abuse, trauma, siblings, recovery, and rebuilding.
the very reason you're alive for by lesmiserablol for remussimp (demiboy_zuko)
Azula's life isn’t glamorous. It isn’t close to the life she ever imagined for herself. It is the kind she had sneered at once, deeming it for the peasants while she was destined to always be a princess.
She rises and rests with the sun. She gathers eggs from the pickens. She starts fires using spark rocks.
Zuko has offered to teach her how to firebend again, how to find a source to reignite her inner fire, but she has never taken him up on it. Sometimes she tries, just to see what will happen, and sees only smoke come from her fingers. Eventually she stops trying.
(or: Azula goes to therapy, starts a garden, bonds with her brother, learns to bake, and meets her niece, but not necessarily in that order.)
Desperate Times by Dawen
Ursa sat in her seat, pride of place as the only adult member of the royal family in the audience. She wore a small, concerned frown, watching the introduction of the fight, keeping a close eye on her husband. She worried; Ozai seemed a little… off. Enough to lose the fight? Ursa didn’t know.
To her right, Zuko squirmed uncomfortably. To her left, Azula held perfectly still, a small smirk curling at the corners of her mouth. Ursa had no doubt that she fully expected her father to win.
And then, five minutes into the Agni Kai, the unthinkable happened.
(Fire Lord Azulon doesn't die in his bed, mere days after the news of Prince Lu Ten's death reaches the palace. But it's still not long until Ursa's life changes forever, and her children's with it.)
The Stitches that Bind us Together by SunflowerSkys
Azula looks at it with disdain. ‘What’s this.’ she says in a voice so patronizing that he immediately feels offended.
5 year olds have no right to be able to achieve that tone he thinks indignantly
‘It’s a dragon, obviously.’ he huffs. Azula squints at the silk in front of her ‘Are you sure? This looks more like a tiger-eel to me.’ Zuko glares at her. ‘It’s a dragon’ he repeats.
Just an idea about embroidery traditions.
Mountains and Badgermolehills by Glass_Onion
After the Blue Spirit frees the Avatar from the Pohuai Stronghold, Admiral Zhao captures Prince Zuko under suspicion of treason. Isolated from his Uncle and his crew, Zuko has only one ally: the chatty prisoner one cell over.
On Top of the World by mindbending for Museflight
“Lord Agni,” Azula says, swallowing a laugh. It’s hilarious that she’s down on her knees, praying like she can rely on any force but herself. “I have power, but I’d like some more if you’d be so obliging. Power to get the things I want. Power so grand, it’ll shock everyone on earth- even me, if you can manage that.” She snorts before adding on her last ridiculous, meaningless request. “Power to match the Avatar’s or outdo him, if you’d like!”
Or: after the Boiling Rock debacle, Azula gets what she didn't quite wish for and wakes up as an airbender.
No friend like a sister by Dissenter
In which Ursa dies in childbirth, Zuko becomes the most obsessively overprotective big brother imaginable, and Azula looks up to the big brother who raised her a lot more than her mostly absent father.
Gratidad by nbj
Gratidad - noun / ˈɡrætɪdæd /
A deeply grateful father who tries to instill this gratitude to the Prince of the Fire Nation, to whom he owes his daughter's life. But with strong painkillers, childhood trauma and Zuko's general awkwardness, it's not as easy as Hakoda had imagined.
Encanto
Object Permanence by a_6yearold_inside
Bruno made the effort to get to know all his nephews and nieces while in the walls and now he was out! It was great! He got to hug his sisters again, and join the whole town in rebuilding their home. It was great.
…except he wasn’t really sure Camilo existed.
In which Camilo's been doing a lot of shape shifting recently, Bruno doubts his sanity and assumes the worst.

mangaluva replied to your post: sapphireswimming: commandersya replied to your...
Honestly, shit like this is why I only post one thing on FFnet, and that with the stated intent to stop posting there once it’s finished. I have fond memories of FFnet, but really, it’s been years since that site was worth it.
Basically, other than a few people (few enough that I can literally count them on one hand), no one I care about uses FFN as their main fic site anymore. Unfortunately, a few of those people who do are really dear friends, so I keep posting there. But this is going beyond the pale. My Gundam 00 fics now have twice as many reviews as there are active members of the fandom, and maybe two of those reviews are from real people.
So yeah, if my next fic only shows up on AO3? This will be why.

Gen DCMK fic reccs
So I thought I’d compile a list of gen fics for anyone looking to dip their toes into this craziness. I’m gonna prioritize shorter, character focused fics over the long, plotty ones that I adore from fans just to avoid confusion from the immense amount of background info needed. (edit: okay maybe a few of my favs at the end)
Frozen Moonlight by Batsutousai
Kaito's relaxing holiday with the Nakamoris gets turned on its head when a certain miniature detective shows up at the same resort, and then promptly goes missing.
Rolling Snake Eyes (Two Craps Two) by joisbishmyoga
The hotel was a tiny thing, a bed and breakfast really, made from a pair of old townhouses at the edge of the old mountain village. Some creative spark had put an actual floor in where one house's kitchen and storage had been, and ringed the sunken space with comfortable bench seating and mounds of pillows. It wasn't ideal to wait out the coming storm, not with the slow wifi and close quarters with Meitantei, but it was cozy and warm, and didn't even have the usual decorative iron f--f--thing in the tea kettle's traditional suspension chain over the hearth.
(The plots to both of these are ‘Conan gets in way over his little head requiring Kaito to trudge out to save him’)
Third Time’s The Charm by ToukoTai
Kaito's not sure what made Shinichi look at him and decide: 'that guy. right there. We're gonna get acquainted.' But he's not complaining. He would however, like to lodge a compliant over the visiting hours.
(Post-Conan Shinichi aggressively befriends the Kaitou Kid, Kaito is concerned)
Moonlit Secrets by Applepie
With the completion of the antidote to the APTX4869, Shinichi knows it's time to take action against the Black Organisation. Meanwhile, Kaitou Kid is missing his favourite critic and no one will tell him where Conan disappeared off to.
(This fic works off the assumption that Kaito doesn’t know Conan = Shinichi even though most fics make the strongly hinted at leap)
Secrets in Indigo by Sinnatious
A throwaway comment about Kaitou KID’s eye colour sets Kaito on an uncomfortable path of discovery.
(One of the best ‘Kaito is actually Pandora’ fics that I’ve found, its sooo good)
Miracle by Mangaluva
Death doesn't like to leave empty-handed. But Death can be dealt with, and Death can make miracles.
(Now the obligatory ‘Shinichi is actually Pandora’ this one takes angst to a whole new level. It continues to haunt me.)
Nerves of Steel by Ellen Brand
I will have what is yours... Somebody just sent Kuroba Kaito a heist note. And the treasures being targeted are very precious indeed...
(A throwback from FF that can’t be missed. Takes a silly chapter from Magic Kaito where a scientist builds a robot double of Kaito/Kid to its horrifying conclusion.)
Moments in the Moonlight by chibby
Three-shot: After the Kirin's Horn heist, Kid has a few things to say to certain people, and Kaito needs to make some important decisions about what he's trying to do.
(Now this is an excellent mix of meta and storytelling.)
No Little Plans by Candyland
There's a serial killer on the loose, with an very odd MO. Helping with the investigation means that Kaito might need to watch his back for more than one reason...
(Another one from FF, this is technically a sequel to A Perfect Act but it stands well on its own with some fabulous character beats)
Now a little longer
The Reichenbach series by athena-crikey
It all starts when the Kaitou Kid gets shot at a heist defending Nakamori’s daughter. Now Ginzo must cope with the dizzying reality that the thief he’s chased for 20 years might not be the bad guy here.
(Truthfully probably some of my all-time fav DCMK fics. Focuses on lead Kaitou Kid inspector, Nakamori Ginzo and his downright complex fascinating give and take relationship with the thief. Slip & Fall/Pride Goeth Before are masterpieces and Heavy Silences makes me scream from tension every time.)
The Hidden Epidemic Trilogy by MirrorandImage
Conan has stumbled across a mystery. This time the victims are much closer: the students of his elementary school. With Genta and Ayumi hospitalized, Conan will need to solve this case quickly. But then Ran gets hospitalized.
(A classic I can’t not recc since I just finished my reread. Three wonderful mysteries along with character exploration and development, especially of Conan/Shinichi and Ran)
Schrodinger’s Detective by scratchienails
After overhearing an ominous conversation between some suspicious attendees of a heist, the KID Capture Brigade decides to investigate the bizarre disappearance of Kudo Shinichi. But as their attempts to unravel the mystery of his apparent murder progress, and enemies and allies alike close in, they start to realize that some cases should be left closed. Just how can a detective be both alive and dead?
(Am I obsessed with this fic? yes. The MK cast looks into what happened to up and coming teen detective, Kudo Shinichi, who vanished without a trace. Kaito, who damn well knows Shinichi is Conan, worries. A wonderful outsiders look at the general BS of DC with some real mounting tension as they get closer to the impossible truth.)

Avatar fic rec post
Hi people, this is an Avatar fic rec post for @kuruccha who wanted a primer. Happy Avatar renaissance to you :D
Everything under cut, because boy, there are a lot of fics. Forgive me for being repetitive in my recs, but they are all so good and amazing and *melts in a sea of feelings*
First, some authors who are so, so very good and my favourites by them (fics aren’t in any particular order, authors are in alphabetic order):
Avocadolove  (Tumblr: @awesomeavocadolove )
The Problem with Zuko: I love the idea that Zuko finds his way to team Avatar even without the Agni Kai and the rest. One of my favourites fics for at least 10 years.
Another Brother: Zuko was adopted by Hakoda, but he doesn’t remember his past. I really like how Iroh is portrayed in this story, very interesting!
Unchained Melody: Sokka doesn’t return with his body after being spirit-napped from Her Bai. Strangely, only Zuko can see him. I really love how everything is developed here :)
Consider Chaos: series where Zuko finds Vaatu and becomes the Chaos!Avatar. Really interesting premise, cooler effects!
Half a Heart: Zukka!soumates AU. Very interesting choices about world building and Hakoda’s character.
Haircrescendo
Carry On For You: from the series intro “Not the Pokémon AU you asked for but the one you’re getting anyway.”. I like it a lot, amazing adaptions and backstory building for Zuko. It focuses on Zuko and Sokka.
Compassion For All Our Monsters: intro “How Sokka learned to shut up and be nice, and also learn a little bit more about Zuko than he wanted to.” mandatory Sokka-finds-out-about-Zuko’s-past.
Fire Nation Yacht Club: one of the angstiest series I’ve read, I love it and I re-read it like once a month. Intro of the fist fic “Sokka knows three (3) things: 1. The caldera is on fire. 2. Ozai’s really, really dead (and so is his daughter). 3. The only one having a worse day is probably Zuko.”
What We’re Given: such an amazing series! Intro “Started out as a “What would happen if Zuko happened to rediscover sky bison while searching for the Avatar?” and turned into something more than that.” Zuko blasting Aang for not washing Appa properly will always be amazing xD
MuffinLance (Tumblr: @muffinlance, suggest following for plot-bunnies)
Towards the Sun: Zuko doesn’t manage to escape on the Day of the Black Sun, a very angst novella-length intro ensues. I love this a lot because of the angst and how it sparkled inspiration for other stories with a similar premise.
Salvage: here it his, the original dad!koda fic. Intro “Mid-Season-One Zuko is held ransom by Chief Hakoda. Ozai's replies to the Water Tribe's demands are A+ Parenting. Hakoda is… deeply concerned, for this son that isn't his, and who might be safer among enemies than with his own father.” Lots of feelings and amazing A+ writing.
The One Where Zuko's Hair Matches Sokka's and Other Tales: fillets from tumblr, extra material, general awesomeness all around.
Miscellaneous
The Home I've Searched For by Kayasurin: I didn’t know Azula/Kuei could be that good! Really awesome story, amazing Azula.
The Festival of Four by SuperKat: Aang knows his time is coming near and he says goodbye. Very touching and moving (yes I did cry), amazing Aang voice.
Sunday in the Park with Appa by Dracze: Parks and Recreation!AU, Aang as Leslie Knope and Zuko as Ben Wyatt. I loved how the AU was adapted on the characters and on the format -blogging instead of “watching in camera”.
Like Fire and Water by Setari: Sokka and Katara find their father in Ba Sing Se with his new wife, Ursa. Very funny, especially when Sokka/Katara and Zuko/Azula realise that they are siblings.
the beginning of a new and brighter birth by aloneintherain: from the intro “In a new era of peace, Zuko works to be a very different Fire Lord than his forefathers.”. I love how Zuko tries to make changes in the Fire Nation at the start of his reign.
The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris: the platonic Gang soulmate AU I needed without knowing. I liked it a lot, especially at the end. One of my favourites!
illustrate the remnants of the life i used to live by WitchofEndor: also a platonic Gang soulmate AU but much angstier. This Zuko is simply heartbreaking.
where the stars do not take sides by WitchofEndor: intro “When Azula is nine, she becomes an only child. She hears the Fire Lord call for Zuko's life, and in the morning, her mother and brother are gone. Azula may be young, but she isn't naive. She knows what happened to them. Which makes it all the more surprising when Azula tracks the Avatar down and fights his group of peasant friends, only to find herself staring into an eerily familiar face.” as beautiful as it sounds, really amazing Azula voice.
Doe-eyed by OldeShoestrings: Azula as the big sister of Zuko. I love how Azula is fundamentally the same but how her being the old sister changes everything. I like this a lot.
How to Care for Your Local Fire Lord; A Memoir by The Palace Staff by RejectsCanon: the fire palace’s stuff joins the Zuko protection squad. I salute them.
The Sins Of Our Family by Mangaluva: amazing series inspired by Towards the Sun. Intro “Zuko didn't escape the Fire Nation on the day of the eclipse. Azula decides to invite him to her coronation, setting off a chain of events involving abuse, trauma, siblings, recovery, and rebuilding.”. Really love this portrayal of the fire siblings.
There Is No Fire Lord by OccasionalStorytelling: other fic inspired by Towards the Sun, basically Zuko remains in prison even if he is basically the Fire Lord. The plot soon becomes its own creature and I love how it develops.
Two Perspectives by Sabretoothgooselion: series about Zuko and Kuei, really lovely. As of now there are 2 fics, but apparently more are in the works. Cannot wait!
this love burns so yellow (becoming orange and in its time, exploding) by meliebee: the first year and something of Zuko reign. Amazing Zuko voice, very angst, much approved.
and love will be your teacher by Ford_Ye_Fiji: series on hiatus, AU where Azulon doesn’t die and takes Zuko away from Ozai giving him to Iroh instead. Very very nice, I love the relationship between Zuko and Iroh.
Of Dead Fire and Dragon Dreams by ChickadeeChickadoo: during the Day of the Black Sun Ozai lies to Zuko saying that Iroh is dead. Zuko redirects lightening to him and he finds himself Fire Lord. Very cool story, love Azula in here.
In the Soft Light by CSHfic, VSfic: Zukka, moon-spirit-Sokka!AU. I love this story so much! Zuko is so very an awkward turtleduck here.
How to Disappear Completely by aeoleus & the long way around by ciaconnaa: two modern Au where Zuko is Kiyi’s guardian, very very nice.
kintsugi by discordiansamba: when Zuko is banished he becomes Toph’s bodyguard. Yes it is as amazing as it sounds.
it's the illusion of separation by argentoswan: very nice Zukka!modern Au. Sokka starts working at the Jasmine Dragon, but alas, his old high school bully Zuko works there too. I love how Zuko’s past with the gaang was adapted and how the relationship between him and Sokka develops.
Finding Solace in Parking Lots by RejectsCanon: Zukka!Modern au, Sokka and Zuko find themselves in the same McDonalds’ parking lot having a breakdown. Really really lovely.
Fractures by EvieNyx: instead of being banished, Ozai imprisons Zuko far from everyone’s eyes. When Ozai and Azula are defeated he evolves from prisoner to Fire Lord in one big step. Love the characters and the cliffhangers!
Fight by Electrons: Zuko doesn’t side with Azula at Crossroads of destiny, but that doesn’t make everything much easier. Amazing word-building and lovely dive in cultural diversity. Also, ace!Zuko which is very lovely.
Dragon of the Yuyan by 00AwkwardPenguin00: intro “In which Zuko is fostered/adopted/raised/recruited by the Yuyan Archers of Pouhai Stronghold, and destiny hiccups.” very very cool story, I really like how Zuko is portrayed here.
Always trust Sokka's instincts by Thisisentertaining: whereas Jet shows Sokka an interesting Fire Nation prisoner... a Zuko-joins-the-Gaang-early-Au. Very very good :D
all my skeletons out for the taking by 136108: Azula wins the Agni Kai. It’s still on progress but for now it’s very very good and I can’t wait to read what’s happening next.
Mark Time by foil: yes, another Zukka modern au. This is very very angst, be careful with the tags’ warnings. This story keeps surprising me and I hope Zuko and Sokka will find their happy ending.
