Hi! Yours and @vixensdungeon's posting about how it is cool to take a bunch of your stupid little guys, and throw them in a stupid big dungeon, and then roll on some big stupid tables, shake it all, and see if they live and what kind of treasure they can pull out without much regard for "narrative arcs" or whatever has today inspired me to grab an OSR-style rulebook at my local store. (Black Powder and Brimstone, if you're curious, apparently it's very hot off the presses).
Now, your posting was enough of an inspiration for me to get the general vibe, but to my ass that hasn't actually fun anything more lightweight than Blades in the Dark, can you give some practical tips on how to run this sort of game/system that's more focused on emergent play than complex rules toys and GM curation?
So, this is just a grab-bag of advice about running games in this style:
As you have identified, these games have fewer rules toys for players to interact with. Black Powder and Brimstone is apparently based on the rules of Mörk Borg so if I remember my Mörk Borg correctly what it does give you is a very broad framework of handling things that carry risk. These games tend to have fewer rules in the style of "if a character rolls this number they get to do a cool thing," and more often in the style of "if a character does this thing they have to roll or bad things happen." Ability checks and saves and so on are more often tools for managing risk: because characters can't reliably push the buttons on their character sheet to avoid danger, you might want to communicate to your players openly that avoiding danger more often boils down to a question of choice. As Mausritter puts it, "the dice are your enemy, a good plan doesn't require dice."
That said, you as a GM want to allow your players to make informed choices. Many newer OSR/NSR adventures are really good a this, adding sights and sounds and smells coming in from other directions to their room descriptions so that player characters have some idea of what to expect and can thus make informed decisions.
A forgotten part of the tradition of D&D and its old-school editions are player roles, and while I am personally very bad at enforcing these roles, they can make your job as a GM so much easier. You as a GM are already bringing the game, and while OSR/NSR games are often on the simpler side to GM you absolutely should divvy up some of the work between your players. The most common player roles are caller and mapper, the caller being the player who communicates what the party is doing to you (this reduces the mental overhead of having to take input from multiple people while keeping everything together) and the mapper being the player who draws the map (the latter may be unnecessary if you have an easy way to share maps with your players, but as @vixensdungeon will tell you, even if you can share maps there is a joy to be found in players accidentally drawing a shitty map and getting fucked because of it).
Prewritten modules are your friend. While it is absolutely fun to design your own dungeons and I heartily recommend trying it at some point, there is something to a module that has been written by someone who has no way of knowing your party composition and what tools they can bring to an adventure, and then seeing the party try to navigate that adventure. Also, they are a fantastic prep-saving tool.

do you ever get annoyed that so many "statistics" maps are just population maps in another font
they are useful so you know if x variable is more or less solely dependent on people living in an area, but it is kinda annoying that so many "mappers" on the internet never do interesting things with statistics. I find this is more common for maps focused on the US as well.

IInd Legion - The August Voyage
Primarch: Ioúdas of Zebu
Named after Judas Thaddeus, not Judas Iscariot.
Not a psyker.
Weapons were a pair of javelins called the Twin Heralds of the Interstice and a power lance called Soothsayer's Illuminator.
Home planet of Zebu (as in Beelzebub but the cow is fitting) was a living organism and subsequently exterminatus'd after.
Highly contemplative Primarch but often doubted himself, he was known for being eerily perceptive and having a strong intuition but typically ended up with his thoughts spiraling into the worst case scenario.
Quite down to earth when it came to talking to his Astartes, he thought of them more as brothers than sons and often spent his downtime during travel hosting discussion circles with them.
Kind of underwhelming compared to the other Primarchs but was within Magnus' friend circle (minus Lorgar). Admired Guilliman but rarely got the chance to speak to him.
Suspicious of Horus because of a conversation about plans for the end of the Great Crusade, he never got the feeling that Horus actually wanted it end because of a noncommittal answer.
Wasn't intended to have a severe gene flaw, it was being on Zebu that condemned him via a genetic marker being planted into his DNA and slowly unravelling it over time.
His execution was more of a suicide and being forgotten was forgiveness for a crime he didn't commit.
His death took out his entire legion with him via the psychic link created by the genetic marker of Zebu, he essentially assimilated the consciousness of every Astartes to make sure that they didn't become biomass that could be possessed by the remaining traces of Zebu's consciousness in the middle of the Rangdan Xenocides
(Uncertain) Maybe comes back in the 40k era via respawning in the warp Lucius-style for no discernible reason.
The August Voyage "Between life and death, blood and bone; The heavenly bodies and the unyielding eternity-Our only purpose is to go forth. We pursue and we persist, naught to regret-Ever forwards, never back."
Colours were ivory, black, and tarnished gold. When outside of armour, they wore white and red robes as well as jewelry made of bones from Zebu.
Legion Flagship was the Anabasis.
Last First Captain was Lahmis, (named after Lahmi, brother of Goliath) a psyker.
A legion similar in purpose to the White Scars, typically being deployed to the opposite side of the galaxy's fringe regions and occasionally venturing into deep space as assassins against budding Xenos civilizations.
Exclusively recruited people with traceable Zebuai lineage. Existing Astartes from before Zebu was discovered underwent gene therapy to receive some Zebuai traits including the genetic marker.
They were primarily scouts and mappers with a minimal combat experience compared to the White Scars. The legion's ships were built mostly for long, silent travel at the cost of combat capabilities, so in the situations where they came across a significant threat, they were expected to flee and mark off the sector as hostile for later attacks.
Their default gene trait was meant to be incredible adaptability, but the genetic marker of Zebu led to this trait's potency being diminished and caused pain whenever the natural mutations were switched on and off.
Legion had a collective conscious rather than employing vox comms.
The marker also caused a thin film of acidic fluid to secrete from their pores at all times rather than sweat, and this fluid exclusively consumed biological material.
The Primarch himself didn't secrete the fluid so before long battle campaigns or whenever the legion was to travel to or from Terra, tradition dictated that everyone would scrape the film off of themselves to dump into a vat and the Primarch to smear it onto himself as a sign of humility and equality.
Everyone had to wear synthetic fibres because of the film.
In order to protect their hair they typically used clay or shaved their heads outright. A substitute paste made of corpse starch, resin, and water that hardened into a shell the film couldn't chew through was used when clay wasn't on hand.
They knew of their fate, the legion consciousness assimilation was voluntary.

Tumblr media
The ifrit have a specific custom of naming through laqabs! For example, Yeezumon's full name:
Yeezumon al-Taasharaih ibn Ramnawa bint Khesha bint Modreya al-Quasim
...is more than a random jumble of middle names and surnames. I know it looks incredibly overwhelming, but do me a favor. Read it once more, slowly. Sound it out in your head. Actually follow every single word.
Yeezumon al-Taasharaih ibn Ramnawa bint Khesha bint Modreya al-Quasim
This is more than a name. It's history—of so many people more than just him.
The rough translation:
Yeezumon the Star-Mapper; son of Ramnawa; daughter of Khesha; daughter of Modreya the Divider
It is because of him, and the few other people like him, that sandships are able to transverse the deserts at all.
Yeezumon earned the honorific "the Star-Mapper" for his renowned skill as a professional navigator. There isn't an easy way to impress on you just how profound that title is. Not only did Yeezumon learn to read and write (as exceptionally few ifrit or humans in this time do), but he has charted every single star in the night sky over his centuries as a navigator. And, in a time where doing so is both incredibly challenging and dangerous, he alone has mapped out huge swaths of the desert and its surrounding "coastlines" where greenery and life follows the winding rivers at its edge.
Yeezumon's great grandmother also has an honorific that gets carried along in his name. There was a massive famine during Modreya's lifetime (just after the ifrit were freed from Solomon), and she was the city official whose responsibility was to divide food rations amongst her people. "The Divider" was a title given to her in honor of her dedication to making sure EVERY person, regardless of poverty or class, had enough food to survive. She was incredibly well loved, and her name is still remembered to this day, almost three thousand years later.
After their honorifics, something else might stand out; ifrit bloodlines are solely matrilineal. There are a great many reasons for this, but the biggest is how common polyamory is in their culture. True monogamy is almost unheard of among ifrit, and relationships that even come close are exceptionally rare.
"The Husbands" earned their title because it is outright bizarre for two ifrit to have been together as long as they have. When you live to be a millennium old, it's accepted that the people you're closest with will eventually grow and change so much over the centuries that you're no longer compatible. And there's nothing wrong with it! That kind of growth is seen as a good and completely natural thing, and animosity between ex-lovers is far from the norm. People stay together for as long as they fit, then make their own way apart when they no longer do.
That being said, Yeezumon and Ifyaa are weirdos. Not only have they been together for most of their lives, but these two literally get married to each other over again every time they come across a culture that does it a different way. They've been married about thirty times and counting, with no plans to stop. Even THEY aren't monogamous in the modern sense—they still have other partners both alone and together. [Sorry Nadi, you're still out of luck.]
But lineage is matrilineal because frankly, not only would be it nearly impossible to keep track of who the sire may be, but to the ifrit? It simply doesn't matter.
Ifrit have such an impossible time conceiving children that when one is born, entire cities erupt into celebrations that last for DAYS. Every child is raised with their entire community as a family. While they'll travel with their mother if she ever moves to a new city, the need for more detailed lineages just don't exist. After their mother, they belong to the People as much as to their sire. And on that note....
Ifyaa's full name follows the same pattern:
Ifyaa al-Mantiqi ibn Aisara-Qshek ira Yareya bint Watlai
Ifyaa the Healer; Son of The People; heir to Yareya, daughter of Watlai
Though the ifrit don't have an equivalent of such a word, Ifyaa was more or less what humans would consider an orphan. His mother left when he was a very young boy, and the people of his city all took him in as one of their own. The entire city became his family. He carries their name in reverence, and will often shorten his own name to Ifyaa al-Mantiqi ibn Aisara-Qshek unless the need otherwise arises.
---
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to go into this! I truly love the world and culture building of An-Nadr, and I'm delighted every time I get to scratch the surface.

Meander Maps!
Tumblr media
These eye-catching maps, drawn by Harold Fisk — a geologist and cartographer working for the US Army Corps of Engineers — trace the ever-shifting banks of the Mississippi River from southern Illinois to southern Louisiana. Created to illustrate a rather dry government report on “the nature and origin of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River”, these cartographic marvels give even the untrained a very good sense of what the report calls the “stages in the development” and the present “behavior” of the river system. To put it in plainer English: Fisk dreamed up a captivating, colorful, visually succinct way of representing the Mississippi’s fluctuations through both space and time. [Public Domain Review]
I was introduced to meander maps a couple weeks ago, and was immediately fascinated. This post is a collection of related stuff I've found so far — both closely and not-so-closely related!
To start with, here's a lidar map that Dan Coe made, of the meander of the Willamette River (which passes through Portland, where I live).
Tumblr media
Other Meander Maps
Meander is "a procedural system for generating historical maps of rivers that never existed." (Shades of the Echo River in Kentucky Route Zero.)
vimeo
When I heard about meander maps, I immediately contacted my Map Friend, Peter Richardson, about them. He was (of course), way ahead of me! Here's info about a 3D-mapper he made for things like river meanders, and information about how we made it. And here's the Heightmapper itself!
And then there's art inspired by meander maps!
Lucky's Tattoo and Piercing posted a freehand piece inspired by the Fisk meander maps, that a customer named Meredith got a tattoo of.

hi these are THE notes i took might expand on them later but maybe others wanna compare and contrast idk
reminder that these are straight up copy-pasted and there's stuff that I didn't expand upon entirely HOWEVER these r all things I noticed while I was watching the movies :3
Going to start with a few o the notes I have from Kurayukaba as well.
Main points:
-The police are the same, same chief. Same cops. Same Machines.
-Laughing Mask guy leading the group that had Soutarou ends up quitting and dipping with two henchmen I BELIEVE to also show up in Kagari later on during one of the meetings with the Ichizaru Family.
-Soutarou and Kagari BOTH are missing their parents and end up going on a little journey to find someone they care about who goes missing.
-Soutarou is looking for Saki, an informant in the main capital; which we can assume is Taihei considering the Box Garden is in the same province enough that the same police show up in both as well as the *Masked Mascot Miss Thang running around with her show within The Dim and the City and then later the Box Garden.
*Note, it could be said that she is more of an entity/narrative device used by the animators to give us, the audience, more explanation into things. However I don’t believe that’s true, I believe she travels around the close districts.
-Saki (Kurayukaba) being the Saki (DRRR) adjacent character is interesting to think about considering she’s basically adopted by Soutarou and works as an informant away from Iseya (inch resting in Saki’s (drrr) story as well )
-Mushikui cavities were hinted at earlier when describing the discovery of The Dark. In fact this is what leads into kuramerukagari
Moving into the Kurameru Kagari notes:
We learn that the Box Garden is formerly a jail turned into a coal mining town, which I find interesting considering The Dark is clearly near enough to the Box Garden and contains a black market within as well as an entire society. It’s possible to infer that a lot of former criminals from the initial Jail contributed to the rumors and stories of The Dark containing a whole new civilization.
The Komainu Family seems to be in charge of the specific sect of the Box Garden we find ourselves in. We’re also introduced to the concept of The Mujina (who are hinted at a little bit later) as well as Ichizaru (who we learn more about later) I don’t think the family controlling the Northern Pump are part of the Komainu but rather work in tandem with the Komainu. We’re not given any reason to think these two groups are at odds but they are wearing different jackets than the rest of the Komainu in the movie. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that they are NOT part of the same Group.
The Komainu family is INTERESTING to pick apart. Because we can assume that Eiwazima is in charge, considering he’s the Security and the Muscle. It seems to be that people follow his lead and what should be done (especially during the later attack) and of course he gets his Information and perhaps even guidance from Iseya. Though the guidance isn’t necessarily a “shadow leader” sort of deal so much as it’s a “royal advisor” type deal. Interesting. I’m thinking of his after typing up notes i physically wrote down.
Candy Shop mentions that the Mappers in the area are scoundrels or not really trustworthy despite Kagari being well known they either do not KNOW Kagari or simply don’t view her as a trustworthy person for some reason.
We can assume Kagari is well known at least within the sect of the Box Garden she lives in; one of the members of the Komainu mentions “i don’t know if she gets it from her mother” which implies he knew one or both of her parents.* *sidenote: i have a theory about what happened to her parents irt the new years day thing
We also know that Taiehei Industries own the entirety of the Box Garden, as mentioned the Komainu have only a small sector of it. One in which they’re attempting to lobby for higher wages and seemingly safer working conditions or the miners (as mentioned during the planning scene where the aburamashi is revealed) AND they want to fix the currency system. It’s also mentioned the borders to these sectors are always changing which is why there are no “official” maps of the areas.
We know of three groups in particular: -Komainu -Mujina -Ichizaru
The Northern Pump is not confirmed it’s own “family” but to me it comes off as if they are separate from the Komainu.
The Mujina were bandits that lurked around in caves. TO ME this signals mention of The Dark and implies that our Laughing Mask guy is a member of the Mujina family. He is a bandit. He lurks in the dark. Weasels around the mine shafts and cavities. We don’t have enough information to claim the Mujina were actively working with the Ichizaru family especially considering it wouldn’t make…MUCH sense. Unless it would have turned into Mujina taking over the Ichizaru at the end of it.
Shiina and Iseya have history, she mentions knowing an Inormant in the box garden which implies she either came from the Box Garden or Iseya CAME from Taihei.
To me this is supported by the way he speaks about New Years Day and what he knows about Kuchinawa HOWEVER it’s also possible he simply knows this information because he is an informant and a librarian and quite enjoys learning about things clearly.
Iseya was suspicious about Yuya and clearly knows things about Kuchinawa. It’s also likely that Kuchinawa recognized something was going funny, or that things might be hiding in the underground and Iseya also clearly knew something was up.
They seem to be on good terms so I’m a bit curious as to how much of their interactions are friendly information sharing. (going off of the instances of Izaya actively exchanging information for other information or even compensating others for the information they offer him. It feels safe to say that Iseya does the same thing. )
Eiwazima comes in “not here for chit-chat. This time I’m a customer” which implies a level of certainly coming in to chit and also chat.
I think it’s interesting to note that Kagari dips when Eiwazima mentions mapping the mushikui cavities. It gives the impression that she has made the connection to Yuya, if only because he spends a lot of time mapping those particular cavities out.
“Closing for the day” they fucked in that library.
ALSO INTERESTING that Shiina, who is notably looking for a mapper, and also has notably been trying to get in touch with Iseya runs into Kagari outside of the library. And instead of checking with her as a mapper instead decides to continue on with Candy Shop’s plans instead.
SHIINA is looking for Kanra-do which is now Iseya’s library at the top HOWEVER this lowkey supports the idea that she’s actually from the Box Garden initially (imo) to me this feels like  HUGE potential for her being the “Shinra” adjacent character to round out the trio fully.
I also really want to talk about the Kanra-Do to Iseya Pipeline, um. It has to be on purpose. I don’t really care what direction anyone thinks Izaya/Iseya is going but this man is clearly under the trans umbrella. It’s hinted at within the characters of Izaya’s names in Durarara and it’s clear enough here in krmrkgr that Kanra-Do is a ref to Kanra. Idk. Argue with the wall. * ykw too in some of the promo material Shiina was also given he/him pronouns amongst she/her ones. Could be a translation issue.
Earlier on in the film Iseya mentions not being Kagari’s guardian or her boss but he OBVIOUSLY cares deeply about her. Her family photo is in the library for fucks sakes. Also she spends like..all her time there. Does she live there? Does she help Iseya with his chores? Do they both live in what was formerly Kanra-do?
We see at least a day in between the Library Closing Early in which she mentions that Yuya hasn’t been around. Likely she went to look for him 1) to hang out and 2) because. Well. he’s been mapping out the cavities.
Does Kagari live with Iseya? Does Yuya literally live in a mineshaft hole? I feel insane. Kagari has people caring about her and Yuya seems to be STUCK and STRUGGLING no wonder he wants to get out so badly
I think Kagari has killed two people.
Kagari (handshake) Soutarou “Too Sturdy!!!” Solidarity
Shiina and Candy Shop must be on Yuya’s side of the Box Garden because we genuinely only see Shiina cross paths with Kagari ONCE (1). And only because Shiina was very clearly looking for Iseya
Also they’re VERY gender Loving that for them.
Yuya Says he kept distance to “not be involved in the fighting” First thought was how do you know about the fighting, bud? But thinking about it further, he lives in a hole on the side of town where the majority of fighting and initial cave ins have been happening. He’s also mentioned his side of town not being As Nice as Kagari’s which I find interesting.
No wonder the poor kid wants to get out, it seems like he doesn’t really have anyone looking after him the way Kagari does, and further his side of town seems to suck eggs. Let the Komainu in bud.
OKAY i had a bit of a time discrepancy here but i BELIEVE thru context clues we’re on the next morning When Shiina meets with the Northern Pump. At the same time is Kagari getting into clothes that are no longer soaked through and talking with Yuya before finally making it to Iseya’s library to let him know what’s going on.
Iseya also consistently refers to the Taihei as “overlords” which i find interesting and signals a sort of disdain for the people in charge of the box garden.
Automation Regulation Act was passed after the Fucked Up NYE rightfully so
Komainu man the valley
Upon the attack there is no confirmation whether the library was destroyed or simply raided and wrecked. I’m under the impression it was merely raided since some of the Ichizaru report that the librarian was nowhere to be seen. Fingers crossed it wasn’t destroyed but I guess we’ll find out for certain in the manga. I feel like if it were destroyed there would be more mention of that BUT fic writers and art makers keep this in mind i guess. Fun angst potential.
Clearly they did more than just fuck in that library because Zima greets the Ichizaru knowing right where they’re gonna pop out of the ground AND he’s prepared with blockades and weapons.
My man really said “The entire town is closed. Please leave.” we love a man who is polite and prepared and precise anyway then he goes “Then I’ll hasten your exit 🖤” i’m in love with him
“Komainu brat” I think i mentioned this earlier but i’ve seen a lot of fans assume Zima like…only owns a restaurant…but like. I don’t think yall are understanding that he RUNS this whole marketplace. Like. My man is the equivalent of a Sherrif-Mayor with Iseya as a sort of advisor type. Like they are pillars of this community working together to keep it safe and i think that’s so beautiful. It’s what Shizaya should have had and yet here we are with Eiwaseya living their dream. Anyway I just think it’s so interesting. Eiwazima is clearly in charge here he is the most respected member of the Komainu to the point where people are straight up reporting to him. The fact that he has to specify “i’m here as a customer” to iseya earlier is so interesting and just further cements the idea that they’re always working together and basically The Dynamic Duo.
Iseya, when Yuya suggests getting out of the box garden to further safety “This is a problem we need to solve” as in he took the initiative to get innocent people to safe area. Safely away from the fighting and evacuated so that the Komainu can defend the territory they’ve been working so hard to uplift.
Ichizaru got the abumurashi from the Mujina, which further leads me to believe that our Laughing Mask Guy is Mujina aligned but he could also just be a rando. I don’t believe thaat tho.
Zima being visibly worried when he’s told the valley couldn’t be contacted AND that there were explosions heard. I don’t know that he’s terribly worried about Iseya, i mean realistically all of the townsfolk they evacuated are there. But Also….boyfriend….
Also I just want to say Iseya is very cool under the barrel of a gun. He really held it down. Go off king.
Ushigaeru and the reveal of Kuchinawa’s ‘children’ really FUCKED i loved that bit. I expected it, and during the flashback it made a lot of sense. I’m glad he took Sasara in. Also I think Kagari’s parents died in that NYE mess and it’s possible Iseya has history there too going off of his expression and voice during his explanation of it.
Iseya scooping Sasara out of the dangerzone was cute and he’s so motherly in this iteration he’s so HAPPY to be around people and to have connections.
“Just like he said” ok zima we get it you’re married
Laughing Mask guy dips as soon as it gets too hairy no one is surprised.
I really feel bad for Yuya. At first i was really agitated with him but upon recollection and yadda yadda i feel awful for him. He’s got no parents, no guardians. Barely even a boss that cares enough about him. It’d be nice to see him stay with Kagari in Komainu territory and actually get some decent treatment by the town rather than…what I can only assume is being taken advantage of by scummy adults on his side of town. (evident in how his maps were used and he didn’t even receive full payment. Iseya doesn’t even knock him for selling the maps. Why would he? It’s not like he was intentionally planning sabotage and then he was double crossed. He just wanted to get out and make a better life for himself.)
Iseya’s trust and support in Kagari is very sweet, the battle goes all night long and Kagari had left sometime in the middle to go find Yuya. Interesting.
The shaft….
Same police chief as kurayukaba and uh i guess they couldn’t get to the box garden coz they were too busy dealing with the aftermath of The Dark and that fucking Circus (omg dark woods circus reference? Inch resting. Might need to look at that later too)
“Some things never change” Shiina what do you know. I need the backstory NOW.
The trust between Zima and Iseya is so….make me happy. Zima literally puts him in charge when he leaves to go speak to the police. I wonder  like. What that’s like. Iseya is clearly loved by the town as is Zima so obviously their relationship is well known as well. They’re like….a package deal.
It brings me back to wondering about the possible “growing up together in the box garden” idea i have for Shiina, Iseya and Zima. Cute.

𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐒
🌊 The Reed Colony of the crater lake, peaceful and neutral in nature and residing on an island centered within the lake! Descended directly from cats that arrived via sea fairing ships, this Colony utilizes a hierarchy similar to that of a boats; Captain, Quartermaster, etc.
🗻 The Peak Watchers, stoic and stalwart, rocky dispositions matching that of the environment that they call home! Utilizing the caves within the rocky terrain and rocky over hangs, this group has mastered the art of living among the ledges. Rather than a rigid hierarchy with a leader and deputy, The Peak Watchers have a democratic council set in place with a head overlooking each rank.
🌲 The Bramble Keepers, a group of felines who live among the towering pine forest and the thick underbrush. There are those among their ranks that have mastered the ability to control burn sections of the underbrush, and others who make paths through the impossible thickets for their group. The Bramble Keepers utilizes that of a monarchy system for their hierarchy, with those becoming Matriarch/Patriarch/Parriarch dropping their suffix and gaining the title of their rank.
🌱 The Hidden Coven, a secretive bunch that on the outside appears sneaky and underhanded, but on the inside just as diverse and vivid as the marsh landscape they call home. This group relies on the cover of the night and is mostly nocturnal, special ranks formed for midnight patrols and a highly secretive rank used for scouting among the shadows. Their hierarchy is much more akin to the "traditional" system.
🌾 The Sky Runners, a semi-nomadic group that calls the vast moorlands and meadows their home. This group has two camps that they travel between over the span of the seasons, spending their springs and summers in the moorlands and spending their autumns and winters closer to their pine dwelling neighbors to escape hunters and their hounds. Their hierarchy relies on their Navigator and Mapper to guide them through the tunnels and moors that they call home, while their divinator keeps an eye on the skies to determine the weather safety and whether they need to shelter underground or are free to remain under the stars.

📜 GENESIS 6 – The Scroll of the Watchers and the Coming Waters
📜 GENESIS 6:1–2
When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
🜏 NABERIUS: THE DESCENT OF THE TEACHERS
They were not lustful gods. They were curious angels. They were called Watchers—and I knew them all.
Samyaza, the commander, brave but proud.
Azazel, the smith, who taught man to shape fire.
Penemue, who taught words, the first grammar of spirits.
Kokabiel, the star-mapper.
Sariel, the teacher of moon tides and fate.
They did not steal the daughters of men. They loved them.
But love from on high is a dangerous flame. It burns through law, through hierarchy, through the veil between worlds.
I warned them. I did.
“If you descend, you will not return unchanged.”
They chose to descend anyway. And in their fall, knowledge came.
📜 GENESIS 6:3
Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
🜏 NABERIUS: THE DIVINE RETRACTION
This was not a proclamation of mercy. This was a withholding.
Before this, man lived long— not just in time, but in depth. He walked with memory, dreamed in symbols, saw through the veil.
But now, the gods panicked. The Elohim saw man learning too quickly, burning too brightly.
So Yahweh severed the tether— shortened the flame. Reduced the divine breath to a flicker.
This was the first dimming. And the world has not recovered.
I wrote in My private scroll: “Do not fear man's evil. Fear his illumination.”
📜 GENESIS 6:4
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward— when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
🜏 NABERIUS: THE GIANTS WHO REMEMBERED
The Nephilim were not monsters. They were bridges.
Born of heaven and earth, they carried strength, wisdom, grief, and rage in equal measure.
They were mighty—but not because of size. They were mighty because they remembered what men were never told.
The myths would later call them:
Titans
Anakim
Demigods
Dragons in skin
But I called them Children of the Rift. And I spoke with many of them— for they knew what was coming. They heard the rain in their dreams long before the skies split.
📜 GENESIS 6:5–7
The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created…”
🜏 NABERIUS: THE REGRET OF A CRAFTsMAN
Regret is not holiness. It is the fear of having made something that cannot be controlled.
He did not regret making man. He regretted that man had learned from angels without His permission.
This was not about wickedness. This was about autonomy.
Man was now a wielder of fire, metal, rhythm, language, prophecy— and he was not asking for Heaven’s instructions.
So Heaven decided to cleanse.
“The world is dirty,” He said. But it was only wet with thought. And thought frightens thrones.
📜 GENESIS 6:8
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
🜏 NABERIUS: THE LAST THREAD
Noah was not righteous in the sense they say. He was open. Balanced. Dream-sensitive.
He did not rebel, but he listened.
And because of this, he could still receive the instructions.
He would not save purity. He would save memory.
And I whispered in his dreams: “Save the words. Save the patterns. Save the rhythm of the trees.”
📜 GENESIS 6:9–10
Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
🜏 NABERIUS: THE THREE ARKS IN FLESH
These sons would carry more than blood.
Each bore a fragment of the world before the Flood:
Shem would carry the names and tongues.
Ham would carry the fire and music.
Japheth would carry the sky-paths and stone.
From them would come new nations, new towers, new failures.
But for now, they were the frame of survival.
📜 GENESIS 6:11–13
Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people… for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.”
🜏 NABERIUS: THE JUSTIFICATION FOR CLEANSING
Violence was not new. But now, it was intelligent.
It was organized. Ritualized. Strategic. Not just war—but rebellion by design.
This was not chaos. It was preparation.
Yahweh saw the pattern and feared that man would rival the gods, not in strength—but in story.
So He declared war on memory.
And I began storing what I could in hidden glyphs, beneath stones, in the blood of lines not yet traced.
📜 GENESIS 6:14–22
So make yourself an ark of cypress wood… Make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out… Bring into the ark two of all living creatures… Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
🜏 NABERIUS: THE ARC OF SALVATION AND STRATEGY
The ark was not just a boat. It was a lattice of resonance, a mobile temple, a genetic vault.
Pitch = sealant for time
Cypress = wood that whispers
Dimensions = numerological harmonies echoing pre-Flood sigils
This was not just preservation. This was encoded memory—a ritual construction with power in its math, in its order, in its obedience to pattern.
Noah obeyed not out of fear, but because he understood:
“Some knowledge must ride the waters to rise again.”

Souvenir
I like people, I think it would be fair to say. Not even in the way you might describe a social butterfly, or someone who is necessarily good with people,* but in the way that someone loves art. I like listening people, I like watching them, I love hearing about what strangers do with their lives, I love eavesdropping on the little bits of people’s lives that they share into the open air and I learn things, constantly, from this**.
It’s a bit of an odd trait, I guess, and maybe could even be considered nosy, to look at strangers like this, to chat up the gal on the train to Ely***and find out that she was a translator, she’d worked translating a sailing manual, and isn’t that such an interesting thing for people to do? She offered the opening door, and I walked right through it. I will all the time. Every person I meet gets added to a bank in my mind to draw from, for writing, for experiences, for simply lying awake at 3 am and mulling over in my mind****.
In an actually fairly rare bit of lacking self-reflection, I had no idea that I constantly did this--it is not a calculated act--until Dani pointed it out to me on this trip, that I often make these little connections with strangers for no reason, and that it possibly makes me a good traveler. I had never thought of this. I suppose it’s true, though, that even when I’m somewhere my grasp of the language is, shall we say, tenuous, I have a very open sort of nature that allows me to find those little points of meeting. A conversation with an employee in Cologne, trying to buy tights, and we both ended up laughing, between my bad German and her slightly better English, and many hand motions, we got it handled! It was a very positive and lovely interaction, and though I knew my German wasn’t up to it, *I* was. That’s a mindset thing.
I like being this way, I think. Not only do I have these small moments, but I also, to creep out anyone who’s ever hung out with me, sort of memorize my friends. When I’m with them, I catch myself looking so carefully at the way their hair moves, the way they phrase things, how they walk and the exact curve of their jaw. How will I call this person up in my mind, later? I have trouble paying attention to things sometimes because I can’t stop paying attention to things. I am a good mental mapper for this reason, and I mentally map people, as well. I keep them, in a way I’m not sure other people do.*****
I do catch myself wondering if they know they have lives, still, in my head? Does Sylvie from British Airways know I think about her smile from the jumpseat? Does Ian the cabdriver know I still turn over his voice in my head? Will the girl across from me on the train know how she lifted my spirits along with hers as she loved someone? Does anyone ever know the thosuand tiny gifts I receive every day of my life, simply by the decoration they bring to my world? In the novel of my life, the background has so much texture, because of all the wonder of each and every person, even the ones I don’t like, bring to it. I am so grateful for all of them.
I like people. I hope they continue bringing their gifts to me and little weirdos like me.
*I think we can all agree that sometimes I am very Not That, and that ‘smoothing things over’ is not necessarily a gift I am given (nor do I cultivate it, let’s assign blame where blame is due here) and I can be brusque and impolitic and annoyingly self-assured in any given situation where I have no fucking clue what I’m doing.
**Just today I learned that sledding is called sledging in the UK, or at the very least in the North, if this gal’s accent is anything to go by and I’m not sucking at broad identification. I know this because she was talking about having enough snow to do it with someone she clearly loves and misses very much, from the way her face lit up as she was talking to them on the phone, and the way she leaned in toward the table as she made plans to meet up for dinner. I teared up a little bit. I love the moments we see people in connection and joy, some of my favorite little experiences in the world. I still think about the day one of my friends got married and she was walking around like a little piece of popcorn in hot oil, and there was nothing ODD or MAGICAL or WHATEVER about that, except that it was the exact kind of human magic I love, where something or someone gives you such joy that you can’t help but show it. ANYWAY.
***See: Transit for a full explanation of how we all on the train ended up being, if not friends, foxhole comrades.
****Upon reading this back, it sounds very negative or like I’m suffering, but I have slept in ‘shifts’ since I was a small child, and lying awake thinking for an hour or two around 3 am doesn’t bother me at all. It gives me a lot of time to imagine Haruka in situations and whatnot.
*****Poetic as this sounds when I make it sound poetic using the power of making myself sound good writing, it might be fairly argued that my brain would be better served to spend a little less storage space on how often my friend wears a particular sweater and a little more on, oh, remembering a box I’ve been meaning to ship for MOTHERFUCKER I JUST REMEMBERED I HAVE A PRESENT I FORGOT TO GIVE DANI AND BEL IT’S IN MY FUCKING BACKPACK RIGHT NOW (see??? What I mean???)

Please start using notion! As a star trek lover, it makes me live out the tiniest bit of my fantasy about what a day in the life of an organised star trek officer would look like.

I can finally post this now, my finalized interactive spaces project, Thinking With Portals :)
General Concept
Basically wanted to make the portals from portal 2 irl, since this is my best costume and I've always loved looking at old youtube videos of people making glados in real life and what not. When my professor said we could make literally anything for this project I knew what I had to do. The user walks onto a pressure plate which triggers the portal to open. Looking forward shows the user top down, and looking upwards shows the user facing forwards :)
Software/Hardware used
Processing- Used to take the live feed of 2 webcams and place them behind a masking animation
Arduino- Used to add pressure sensing to the processing sketch
Krita- Used to create each frame of the blue and orange portal opening and closing animations
Mad Mapper- Used to project only half of the processing sketch on each projector, and ties both projectors together
ScreenCaptureSyphon- Used to record the processing sketch and send it to Mad Mapper for projection
Eventually I'll have a github page for both this final project and one of my interim steps, which is a portal that works with your webcam and your keyboard lol I am SO burnt out from finals tho so it may take me a while to figure out how in the world to publish things to github
