Common Imperial Butterfly - Cheritra freja

There’s a small, but marvelous Butterfly settled on in the undergrowth here, courtesy of my dear friend SaraLi from her yearlong trip around Asia. Even though this specimen’s white-wings makes it easy to spot again green leaves, if I were to come across this scene in the wild, I would probably blink and miss the settled Butterfly and then chase it as it flies from leaf to leaf. The wings are the most prominent feature of this Gossamer-Wing, and like its distant cousin for Laos - the Purple Sapphire - the wings at rest hide iridescent scales that would make it far more conspicuous. There are sadly no flashes of scales to be found here, but if you find one of these in the wild during a vacation, expect to find either blue scales or brown scales on top. Based on what I’ve read and seen, these are likely the colors of the male and female Butterflies respectively, but I’ve found conflicting information. There might be fading overtime with the blue slowly losing its luster and/or variability among individuals to consider, but these are only thoughts. The only way I could be sure is to see a living Butterfly for myself. For something that can be seen, and is most prominent however, there are the strikingly long tails at the back of the hindwing. 

Other Butterflies have tailed wings, but given the size of this Butterfly, the tail length is outstanding! Even Butterflies that call Ontario home such as our lovely Swallowtail Butterflies which feature distinct rear tails aren’t as long and have far different proportions. The length of those streamers greatly surpasses the tails of Ontario’s small Gossamer-Wings such as the Striped Hairstreak. The shorter tail below the primary tail (yes, two tails were absolutely necessary) is more a match for the tails of temperate Butterflies, but those long tails above, wow! Just from these pictures alone, they appear to be almost as long as the actual wings. With streamers like that, I wonder how their flight and air mobility is affected, if at all significantly. If the tails were a detriment, they wouldn’t be as long as they are, so it’s likely they are handy to have while flying through the tropical jungles. It’s thought the tails could deserve as a distraction from predators who attack and pursue from the rear. Perhaps its small size necessitates longer tails if it cannot fly stronger or for long distances. Better to lose a piece of a tail than for something to bite a piece off of a wing or the abdomen! Week 3 - Semiotics

 I think that Semiotics is the study of images that can be interpreted in different ways. An example of this could be branding when a company combines both a topic and its message into one. This would let you look at the hidden meaning behind a simple image.

This is a  very creative Macdonalds advertisement. It's a very interesting way to incorporate Albert  Einstein who is known for his theory of relativity, with a food advertisement. It could link to the idea that he's just as human as we are who need fuel. The header of “what's for lunch” links to food being incorporated with E = MC². “Solve lunch first” reaching out to all working people out there to come on down and purchase the new burger.  I think its something unexpected for Macdonalds to come out with as an advertisement.

  On the other hand, this  “Tobasco” campaign advertisement is not as good. I would say this ad is not as good as it encourages people to drink Tabasco like it's a drink rather than a condiment. The man with the flames coming out of him does not look appealing nor would a customer willingly want to experience that. I think the idea was there to portray the sauce to be very spicy and the fire coming out of the man to look like a dragon spitting out the fire to indicate the spice level, but as a viewer, I personally would gravitate towards willingly wanting this experience as well.

After a long four years, I am officially a Registered Nurse after writing and passing the NCLEX yesterday!!!

In three weeks my psych degree will also be complete - what a crazy ride. It still doesn’t feel 100% real, and I can’t imagine how I will feel in three weeks when I don’t have to wake up at 5am on weekends just to squeeze in a few hours of school work before my love wakes up and I wanna hang out with him. It’s gonna be freakin surreal pals.
