“we need more women in music/more female fronted bands.”
this is another sentiment i see a lot, and it’s usually from the grunge camp. gonna tell you this right now, the only part of this i’m really hung up on is the “female fronted” part.
okay.
off the top of your head, name one.
hmmm... let’s see, there's:
Jefferson Airplane
Janis Joplin
Melanie
The Pretenders (i think Chrissy went solo at one point?)
Blondie*
Heart
Fleetwood Mac
Joan Jett
The Plasmatics
The Waitresses
Cocteau Twins
The Sugarcubes (Bjork, too)
Hammerbox
L7
7 Year Bitch
Hole* (and by that extent, Auf de Maur)
Garbage
No Doubt*
Veruca Salt
Jack Off Jill
Bikini Kill
Le Tigre
Bratmobile
Babes in Toyland
Lunachicks (who are awesome)
Sleater-Kinney
PJ Harvey
Lush
Poe (side-note: her brother Mark Danielewski wrote House of Leaves)
Fiona Apple
Olivia Rodrigo (arguably; as someone who grew up in that era, she wouldn’t sound out of place in the 2000s)
Sonic Youth when Kim's on vocals
Pixies when Kim's on vocals
The Breeders
Throwing Muses
Skunk Anansie (Skin singing with Sevendust counts)
Guano Apes (Sandra’s solo career counts, too)
Luscious Jackson—all female no less; they also have a lesbian drummer
Portishead (who believe it or not, influenced Limp Bizkit of all people)
The Dresden Dolls (Amanda’s solo career, too)
The Donnas (another all-female)
Paramore*
Evanescence (Amy’s solo career, too)
Lacuna Coil
Halestorm*
The Pretty Reckless*
In This Moment*
Butcher Babies
Jinjer
Otep*
New Year’s Day
Huntress
Stitched Up Heart
Infected Rain
Arch Enemy (twice over no less)
Whitesnake, as of this past thanksgiving
Madonna... when she was first starting out
Madonna... when her kids were born
there’s also D’arcy from the Smashing Pumpkins
Sandy Denny, who sang on The Battle of Evermore
Nathalie Lorichs, who sang on Coil by Opeth
Cilla Black
Courtney Barnett
Elle King
ZZ Ward
Dorothy*
anything Marianne Faithfull touches *cough cough* The Memory Remains *cough cough*
anything Pearl Aday touches Scott
six words: The Great Gig in the Sky
Prince had a chick bass player and drummer; I think Lenny Kravitz does, too?
any of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s women singers (Meeun Kim, too; that’s a lot of Kims)
and there’s also Malina Moye and Divinity Roxx (black women to boot)
(no, miley does NOT count and stfu about her already)
the ones with an asterisk are the ones who went the gwen stefani route and left their band mates behind for a pop career or they probably could have at any point and i’m genuinely surprised they haven’t. i’ll explain this, too.
now. the phrase “female fronted bands” and also “women in music” annoys me, someone who has difficulty in fully identifying as a woman because i feel i’m at the mercy of gender roles, and like i let this gender down with something like this. like i’m strictly forbidden to say something like this otherwise i’m a misogynist and i should be ostracized twice over. (i just don’t feel like i belong with women anyways, like i’m a complete phony and i’m not feminine enough to identify as a woman, but that’s beside the point)
but it's the same reason behind why my old friend lydia and i left s.w.e. when i was in stem school.
what's the matter, you think the girls can't be as good as the boys? or worse, you think they're better than the boys? the sentiment itself makes it sound like you deserve special treatment all because you’re a woman. it sounds separatist, like just because you’re a woman, you’re put in a league of your own, and it doesn’t sound fair to me. at all. and whether you like it or not, a few of these have taken it a bit too far at this point and let it go to their heads (looking at you, lzzy hale and taylor momsen). and when gwen came back to no doubt, their music suffered - my brother and his wife at the time saw them back in 2010 and they actually left about halfway through. her marriage to yeehaw doesn’t help matters, either.
point is, there’s been and are lots of women in rock music so there’s really no reason to say that. and just ‘cause you see a female face there doesn’t mean they’re to be put up on a pedestal like that. we’re as human as our male counterparts, you know. i hope.

Juliette Gréco was born on February 7, 1927. She was a French singer and actress. Her best known songs are "Jolie Môme", "Déshabillez-moi", and "La Javanaise". She sang tracks with lyrics written by French poets such as Jacques Prévert and Boris Vian and singers like Jacques Brel and Serge Gainsbourg. Her sixty-year career finished in 2015 when she began her last worldwide tour titled "Merci".
As an actress, Gréco played roles in films by French directors such as Jean Cocteau and Jean-Pierre Melville.
Gréco was portrayed by actress Anna Mouglalis in the film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (2010).
Jean-Paul Sartre based the singer in his trilogy The Roads to Freedom (Les chemins de la liberté) on Gréco.
An allusion to Gréco is made by English singer Ray Davies in the song "Art School Babe" from his album Storyteller.
"Michelle" by the Beatles was inspired by Gréco and the Parisian Left Bank culture. Paul McCartney said of the song: "We'd tag along to these parties, and it was at the time of people like Juliette Greco, the French bohemian thing. They'd all wear black turtleneck sweaters, it's kind of where we got all that from, and we fancied Juliette like mad. Have you ever seen her? Dark hair, real chanteuse, really happening. So I used to pretend to be French, and I had this song that turned out later to be 'Michelle'."
John Lennon wrote in Skywriting by Word of Mouth: "I'd always had a fantasy about a woman who would be a beautiful, intelligent, dark-haired, high-cheek-boned, free-spirited artist à la Juliette Gréco."
Marianne Faithfull said of Gréco: "When I was a young girl, Juliette Gréco was my absolute idol...She’s my role model for life. If I want to be anybody, I want to be Juliette Gréco".
In 1999, a rose was named after her by Georges Delbard under the name of "Juliette Gréco".

FAVORITE MOVIE LOVE STORIES
THANKS FOR THE TAG: @superkingofpriderock
Belle and Beast (Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, 1946)
Tumblr media
Since i was a kid, Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite western european fairy tale. I relate at the same to the Beast’s desire to be accepted by the society that fears and looks down his appearance and to Belle’s mixture of fear, curiosity and fascination by the hybrid anthropomorfic creature. And with their great chemistry, the actors Josette Day and Jean Marais really captured those feelings in this classic adaptation directed by Jean Cocteaus
Damiel and Marion (Wings of Desire, 1987)
Tumblr media
A 1987 film by Wim Wenders originally called Der Himmel über Berlin (lit: ‘The Heavens Above Berlin’).The film depicts two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, wandering in Cold War era Berlin and listening to the thoughts of humans. Among those humans are an old man looking for the now-destroyed Potsdamer Platz and recalling the good times he used to have there; Peter Falk As Himself; and Marion, a lonely French trapezist desperately looking for a purpose in life.  The angels don’t directly intervene in human existence but sometimes give comfort to humans who need it, like a woman in labor, or a suicidal man on a tram, or a motorcyclist who is dying in the street after he was struck by a car. However, Damiel yearns to be human himself and to experience life as a mortal does. Eventually he falls in love with Marion, the trapeze artist, and has to make a difficult choice: to become human himself in order to be with her, leaving Heaven.
Queen Fantaghirò and King Romualdo (Fantaghirò/The Cave of the Golden Rose franchise, 1991-96)
Tumblr media
Fantaghirò (known in the english speaking world as The Cave of the Golden Rose) is a series of five television films produced in Italy by Lamberto Bava (Mario Bava’s son), telling the adventures of Fantaghirò, the youngest of three princess sisters, who traines to become a brave warrior as a way to get free of the sexist restrictions imposed at her life by her father. Her kingdom has been at war with a neighbor kingdom for years, and one day the rencently crowned young adversary king, Romualdo, decides to end the war by personally challenging the best champion of Fantaghirò’s kingdom. Fantaghirò, disguised as man, presents herself as this champion, and their love story begins when Romualdo falls in love with the beauty of her eyes. What’s interesting about this couple is how their personalitys complement each other: Fantaghirò with a more combative strong temper, and Romualdo with a more sweet and calm temper.
Marianne Danielle and Doctor Van Helsing (The Brides of Dracula, 1960)
Tumblr media
While watching Hammer Horror’s Brides of Dracula, i finded adorable how Doctor Van Helsing cares for Marianne Danielle (whom he befriends while arriving at Transilvania), how he wants to protect her and respects her feelings, to the point of trying contain his sorrow when she announces her engagement with Baron Meinster. I always imagine that when he defeated the Baron (who is revealed to be a vampire), and flee the wind mill with Marianne, he declared his feelings, she reciprocated, he teached her how to fight vampires, they married and became a battle couple searching to purge the world of the vampires. This is a pairing who deservers more love, fanart and fanfiction.
Fininha and Clécio (Tatuagem, 2013)
Tumblr media
Tatuagem (Tattoo) is a movie set in the late 1970s, during the period of the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship, that tells the love story between Fininha, an young soldier, and Clécio, an actor and playwrighter who produces satirical plays for a underground theater called Chão de Estrelas (Floor of Stars). Their romance is one of the most sweetest ever captured on film, but we also feel a certain unease that the fact of Fininha being at the service of the military who persecutes the theater artists will break the couple apart at any moment…
Karaba and Kirikou (Kirikou and the Sorceress, 1998)
Tumblr media
Kirikou and the Sorceress is a 1998 French animated film, directed by Michel Ocelot, loosely based on a West African fairy tale.  It tells the story of a tiny baby boy, named Kirikou, who is born in a spectacular way (all by himself, without effort of his mother nor outside help) and can speak and walk immediately after being born. After a couple of questions, he learns that a wicked sorceress, Karaba, has cursed the village and devoured all the men and boys, except his uncle, who is on his way to fight the sorceress. He tricks the sorceress, saves his uncle as well as the children of the village (twice!!), brings the water back to the dried-up spring and, among other things, discovers the sorceress’ true motivations: Karaba is evil because of all the suffering she went through at the hands of men, including a very subtly implied rape. All the bad things that she allegedly had done are ultimately proved to be false. She does hate everyone, but she gets better. Despite being a baby, Kirikou asks Karaba in marriage when she pulls a Heel–Face Turn, saying that he doesn’t like little girls. She doesn’t accept, of course, but then her kiss turns him into a handsome young man.
Nina Shah and Lisa MacKinlay (Nina’s Heavenly Delights, 2006)
Tumblr media
Nina’s Heavenly Delights is a Rom Com about a cooking contest,  directed by Pratibha Parmar. The death of her father Mohan brings prodigal daughter, Scot with Indian ancestry Nina (Shelley Conn) home again to Glasgow, her mother, siblings - and the family restaurant, “The Taj”. Being able to keep the latter now hinges on the cooking skills Nina learned at her father‘s knees. In the “Best of The West Curry Competition” she will have to face the former fiancé she left at the altar, Sanjay. In this competition, she will count with the partnership of Lisa, who owns half of the restaurant since Mohan’s death and already seems to be very much part of Nina’s family. And in the proccess, Lisa also becomes a part of Nina’s heart…
Lady and Tramp (Lady and the Tramp, 1955)
Tumblr media
I grew up watching VHSs of the old Disney 2-D Animated movies over, and over, and over. And a thing that i find funny is that most people tend to quote movies from the 1990s Disney Renaissance as when Disney Couples started to met each other first instead of fall in love at first sight, bu when we make a retrospective, in actuality it was Lady and Tramp who started the trend. First they met at Lady’s house and have a verbal fight due to diverging points of view about humans, them they encounter each other again at the streets when she flees from Aunt Sarah, and they walk trough the zoo to unleash Ladys muzzle, Tramp takes her to dinner at Tonys (wich us gives Bella Notte, one of the most romantic scenes in movie history)… every step that a real couple takes to meet each other is taken by Lady and Tramp.
Orfeo x Eurydice (Black Orpheus, 1959)
Tumblr media
Black Orpheus is a 1959 film, a French production shot in Brazil and in the Portuguese language. It is a retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in Rio during Carnaval. Orfeo is a trolley conductor who moonlights as a dancer in a samba school. He is engaged to be married to the gorgeous and passionate Mira, but doesn’t seem too enthused about it. On his trolley car, he meets Eurydice, who has arrived in Rio from the countryside because she is being chased by a mysterious man who she thinks is trying to kill her. Orfeo and Eurydice fall in love, but the strange man—Death himself—is still stalking her.

Maruxa Mallo e Valentine Hugo

No ano 1934 entra en contacto co grupo surrealista e aí muda a súa percepción estética.

Remedios Varo, Frida Khalo, Leonora Carrington

French Shoegaze, Dream Pop & Noise Pop, a quick guide, Vol. 2
In our Volume 1 you discovered / revisited Welcome to Julian (90’s), Dead Horse One, Stuck in the Sound, Venera 4, Soon she Said, Automatic Fiction, Candelabre (see our collaboration) and the Sigh (90’s).
You are here again for a other musical treat, as we continue to introduce you to some of the fantastic bands that France has (had) in our favorite genres. This second volume, like the ones to follow, includes past, present, big and small bands in no particular order.
First a big thank you to Elisabeth (Kill the Moose), Margot (Tapeworms), Michel (Lucie Vacarme), Evol (Dead & Nothing Collective), Yann (Marble Arch), Pierre (Dead Mantra) and their bandmates for taking the time to ensure that their band’s information was accurate.
LUCIE VACARME (90’s)
Lucie Vacarme, from Toulouse, is one of the main and most influential French Shoegaze (called ‘Noisy Pop’ then) band of the 90’s. This the first recorded musical experience of Michel Cloup, known for having worked in one of the major bands of the French scene of the 90s, Diabologum. They disbanded in 1993.
The band was known for their saturated and hazy sound, at the limit of the audible, especially in concert (those of Toulouse and Bordeaux in the first part of Lush were known to have caused tinnitus).
Despite the support of Bernard Lenoir (the French Equivalent of John Peel), Lucie Vacarme did not break through.
All readers of ‘Les Inrocks’ knew the band even if it was not easy to get their CD’s. I for one had the CD’s copied on tape as I could not get the CD proper (always out of stock when I looked). Unfortunately, I have lost the tape since unfortunately.
The band had more influence on the limited ‘Noisy Pop’ French musical scene as the time that they think. Many bands (my band Smiling Marianne, The Sigh, …) knew Lucie Vacarme’s music and we were inspired by some of it, if only to know that French bands could make such great music. Milkyway was to our opinion one of the best Shoegaze album around. Thanks guys.
There is a little story as Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) featured on the band’s album, as detailed in Michel Cloup’s interview in ‘Soul Kitchen’
“We sent our first EP to Thurston Moore. He sent us a postcard back. We had suggested to Kim, at the time when they recorded ‘Dirty’ to make a featuring on our song "Kelly Kiss". She did it over the phone with a very bad sound and accent. Fortunately, we wrote her name on the booklet and people were able to know she featured”.
One of their songs, ‘Souffle incandescent’ features on DKFM ‘Shoegaze classics and rarities vol2’ that can be found here on Mixcloud.
The band’s lineup was:
David Amsellem : guitar, voice
Michel Cloup : guitar
Patrice Bellanti : bass
Valery Lorenzo : drums
The music work is as follows:
1990: Metalvox, EP
1992: Milkyway , Album
1993: Audioscope, EP
Some of the songs we love:
ALCEST
The presentation of the band on Wikipedia tells us that Alcest is a French Post-Metal band from Bagnols-sur-Cèze, founded and led by Neige (Stéphane Paut). It started in 2000 as a Black Metal solo project by Neige, soon a trio, but following the release of their first demo in 2001, band members Aegnor and Argoth left the band, leaving Neige as the sole member.
In 2009 drummer Winterhalter from Les Discrets (and formerly Peste Noire) joined Alcest's line-up, after eight years with Neige as the sole full-time member.
Since its creation, Alcest has released five studio albums and a number of EPs and split releases. Their fourth album, 2014's Shelter, marked a dramatic shift towards a distinctly Shoegaze sound, however their latest album Kodama marks a partial return to their earlier Blackgaze sound. The band are widely credited with pioneering the Blackgaze/Post-Black metal genre, particularly through their EP ‘Le Secret’ released in 2005.
Alcest's fourth effort, entitled ‘Shelter’, was released on January 17, 2014 via Prophecy Productions. It features a guest appearance by Neil Halstead (Slowdive). Stylistically the album is a radical departure for the band, dropping all traces of metal from their sound and fully committing to the Shoegaze side of their sound. Neige later said in an interview that
"We are proud of it, but I think it was maybe a bit too influenced by other things. I really was obsessed with Slowdive at that time. Shelter still sounds very ‘Alcest’, but maybe not as much as the other records.”
On January 22, 2019, the band announced that they would start recording their next studio album the following day.
The current line-up is:
Neige – lead vocals, guitars, keyboards (2000–present), drums (2000–2009), bass (2001–present)
Winterhalter – drums, percussion (2009–present)

NøTHING COLLECTIVE
The Nøthing Collective is a Collective of like-minded French bands within the Shoegaze / Noise Pop / Altrock / Dreampop genres. They include an extensive lineup of some of the best current French artists.
They present themselves as follows:
“No matter where, no matter who and no matter how. What matters is the sound. What brings us together is the desire to have one. What binds us is the will to defend it. What we are passionate about is the desire to reveal it to you.”
The bands part of the collective so far are: A V G V S T, Future, Dead, Dead Horse One (see our Volume 1), Marble Arch (see below in this guide), Maria False, Saintes, Seahorse Hunter, Still Charon, Venera 4 (see our Volume 1), Beat Mark, Cavale Blanche, Des Roses, Giirls's facebook, Hermetic Delight, Mara, The name of the band, San Carol, Shadow Motel, Soft Blonde, Volage, Tapeworrm (see below in this guide), La Houle, T/O, Bank Myna, Good morning TV, Big Wool, Soon She Said (see our Volume 1), Brace! Needless to say, Nøthing Collective was one of our main resources to source great bands for this Guide. More bands form the Collective will be included in the next volumes of this guide.
  MARBLE ARCH
As stated on the band’s social media, “Like the white marble monument -located on the West end of Oxford Street- from which the group borrowed its name, Marble Arch was cut for triumph. Having perfectly digested Shoegaze and Dream Pop's secrets, their music has been oriented toward childhood and experimentation.
After the first DIY record, Yann Le Ravazet had some time to think about the musical tone and sounds of his new record. He didn’t want it to be labelled Shoegaze nor Dream Pop. As a matter of fact, we’d be more likely to hear reverberated pop (Remeniscence), saturated pop (the infectious song “I am on My Way”), nostalgic pop (Moonstruck), synthetic pop (Instant Love) or even contemplative pop (Gold).”
The band has indeed evolved between the first and second album, though still into the music world of reverberation.
Les inrockuptibles (the French NME) did a very good interview of the front man from which this is extracted:
"In 2014, we discovered Yann Le Razavet with 'The Bloom Of Division', album entirely designed by the light of his bedside lamp. Under the name of Marble Arch, the young musician flew far away from the noisy shoegaze of his first band, Maria False, and delivered many of titles full of foggy nostalgia and twilight lyricism. Full of an elegance and finesse rather rare in France, 'Children Of The Slump' is without a doubt a very good record, and even when wholly mustering our critical mind, there is not much at fault."  -- Les Inrockuptibles
Band Members are:
Yann Le Razavet, vocals, guitar and keyboard
Thomas Tan, Lead guitar
Adrien Vernet, guitar, backing vocals
Thomas Beilles, Bass
Danny Kendrick, Drums
Music work to date
2013: echidna, EP
2014: The bloom of division, Album
2016: The Sand, single
2019: Children of the Slump, Album
Some of the bands’ songs we love:
KILL THE MOOSE
Kill The Moose is an alternative rock band, strongly influenced by the British Shoegaze scene of the early 90's.
It was founded in 2015 by Elisabeth and Alex, in Nice, on the French Riviera. Kill the Moose is a concentrate of noise energy mixed with melodies that remain in the forefront. The songs are ethereal, pop and sweet, drenched in a wall of sound, full of reverb and distortion, with the beats of a deep bass and powered-up drums.
Note that the name ‘Kill The Moose’ is not a tribute to Shoegaze's British band ‘Moose’, but a reference to a Monty Python piece.
The lineup is:
Elisabeth Massena, Vocals
Alex Ornon, Guitar
Alexis Fedunizin, Bass
Nicolas Bonnet, Drums
Arthur Arsenne, Guitar
The music work to date is:
2017: Demo #1
2018: Good Girl EP; The World Is Your Oyster EP; Contented Eye (Adorable cover); To The Moon And Back EP; Suzanne (Moose Cover)
2019: Into My Arms (Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds Cover)
Some of the songs we love:
DEAD
Dead is a Coldwave / Noise / Electronic band from Rennes. Their music errs more towards the Early Cocteau Twins and The Cure (disintegration period). Their combination of synth waves and reverb guitars give a beautiful cold and dark feeling.
The band present themselves as follows:
"What more can you say about a band called DEAD that hasn’t already been made abundantly clear at first glance?
The fact that these French mercenaries of noise can conjure up such a powerfully dark aesthetic before even hitting a note is impressive, but when they finally do, they unleash a far more potent beast entirely. If DEAD aren’t already mapping out the future destruction of the planet, they’ve sure as hell written the soundtrack.
Bleak, confrontational, but with a firm command of rhythm and deep grooves, this might be the dancefloor antidote we’ve been waiting for."
The line-up is:
Berne Evol, vocals
Brice Delourmel, guitars
Bernard Marie, drum machine & keyboard
Musical work to date is
2012: Transmission, EP
2014: Verse, EP
2016: Voices, Album
2019: Dreams, EP
Some of our favorite songs from the band:
TAPEWORMS
Tapeworms is “3-piece rock band, mostly eating French fries, listening to Smash Mouth and watching Evil Dead. From Lille, they're trying their best to produce some noisy, dreamy, aggressive but kind music.”
An interview in Section 26 summarizes the band in a few words: ‘Do It Yourself’ is in the DNA of the band, which is outlined in the former student room of Theo, when they have fun with Margot covering Sparklehorse or Drop Nineteens on an online beat box, with an old cassette player as recorder. Eliott, used to play with his big brother, then started on the drums "We began to rehearse my grandmother’s attic. Tapeworms is really born at that time, fed with her pies and 90’s music. " Tapeworms has a shoegaze sound, noisy pop, immersed in the tradition of the 90's.
The band members are
Margot Magnière: Bass, Vocals
Théo Poyer: Guitar, Vocals
Eliott Poyer: Drums
The music work to date is:
2016: All Stars, EP; Tapeworms, single; macadam star, single.
2018: Everything Will Be Fine, long EP
Some of the songs we love:
DEAD MANTRA
Dead Mantra were created in 2009 in le Mans. The define their music as being “Gregorian Shoegaze”. They are part of the record label Cranes Records with Dead Horse One
The inrockuptibles give a very good overview of the band’s sound
"The maliciously saturated guitars sneak around a powerful rhythmic base. From this wall of sound, a veritable ice-cold and cavernous maelstrom, pierce the dark and delicate dark-pop melodies of The Dead Mantra. Young Manceaux, spotted by the Cranes Records label, stand as worthy French heirs of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club for swirling psychedelism and The Jesus & Mary Chain for shoegaze violence. Perfect harmony between devastating fury and sinuous writing."  -- Guilhem Denis, Inrocks
The lineup is:
Paul, guitars and vocals
Pierre Hamelin, drums
Louis, guitars
Henri, Bass
The music Work to date is:
2018: Saudade Forever, Album
2015: MXEICO Remixed
2014: Nemure, Album
2012: Split EP with Dead Horse One
2010: Path Of Confusion, EP
Some of the songs we love to discover the band:
For once we include a Music Video as ‘Mxeico’ is a genuine original piece worth watching and listening. As a warning, it contains male nudity.
