HIDING IN THE SHADOWS: PROLOUGE
SYNOPSIS: In a world where shifters dance on the line of public acceptance and hatred, it's safe to say shifters aren’t welcomed everywhere. To the military, shifters' worth relies on brute strength, obedience, and ability to kill, something John Price was good at. Except obedience, John Price marched to the beat of his own drum and it led to the 141 Special Operations Unit tasked with one goal; take down Markov. Long after their accomplished goal, the task force was “disbanded but a private detective agency was up and running towns over. Tasks and assignments came from all over but when Laswell phones them in for one last mission and who were they to refuse? Project Thena, the once funded government project was apprehended by an opposing force, one with an agenda to push. Wyn  Evers, the center of Project Thena and the lone survivor of the assault, is the sole person who can help them and is plagued with nightmares and fears but, most importantly, a family to protect. All it takes is one deal for her to be on board but what she didn’t consider was to fall into the secrets of the agency or the one’s who freed her.
SHIPS: poly141 x femaleblack!oc, keeganxfemale!oc x logan walkerxfemale!oc
director's warnings: mentions/ descriptions of gore, torture, blood, fighting, implications of sexual violence, fluff, angst, heartbreak, smut, and more to note
director footnotes: welcome to the prologue of Hiding in the Shadows! for an idea of what some of the characters look like or if you want check the story's masterlist! please read the warnings before engaging with the material and happy reading!
prologue warnings: light mentions of torture, bruises, scars, gore, and blood mentions. if you can't handle the subject matter, prioritize yourself first always!
Wyn knew she would never escape the prison she was in. In the mossy cage adorned with broken bricks and stone, and the dried blood splatter that coated the floor was the only source of time she had. It’s been years. Years since the fires, running, the screaming and sounds of bodies hiting the pavement. Wyn closed her eyes, rubbing her ashen hands over her face and biting down on her tongue. The agonizing pain in her left leg prevented her from crawling to her usual corner, something that was her only source of comfort. The chain around her right leg weighted her body down as she curled back into her fetal position. She was too tired to remember but the nightmares came anyway, forcing her to remember. With every bruise, it was like the past ones were throbbed and her body screamed fiery pain as open cut wounds on her stomach and arms were exposed to air and weakened her ability to even ground herself.
She could hear the doctors whispering, even if she couldn’t see them through the darkness of the cage. They clicked their pens and with her heightened hearing, she could hear them scribbling down notes. Observations after their last experiment, her thighs still burned after three hours of intense pain. She smiled, despite herself, no matter how hard those fuckers tried, they couldn’t break her. They did everything under the sun, not even their heavy boots breaking bones made her talk. They were safe and that was keeping her alive, she would make it through this. No matter what, her family was protected and suddenly the prison felt like one of her own making. In her own sick sense, it was becoming a home. Her blood spatter was the blanket she laid her head on and the chill air wrapped around her comfortingly but on the brink of suffocating. Yes, it was a prison of her own making and sooner or later she would call it her home, but until then in the safety of the darkness she let her shadows crawl over her body and take her to a quieter place.
Elsewhere…
At some point, Ghost stopped feeling emotions. The heavy weight of his muscles, the gear that was intended for protection morphed into parts of his skin and the skulls buried underneath his feet gave him an edge. The gunshots, yelling, running sort of bleed into one. It was muscle memory, a reflex honed and sharpened over the years. To anyone else, it would be sick the way he enjoyed it. Bringing his rifle up to his chin and feeling his finger wrap around the trigger, it was almost sinful. Almost but never quite there. He advanced further into the night, the darkness of the trees covered his form and his footsteps were light but purposeful. He could hear their breathing, the way their chest moved up and down and the stutter in the breath. It was their fear he fed on, it was the way they cowered, hoping for an angel to save them from the footsteps they knew were approaching. Two men hunkered together with guns shaking in every direction. Too bad he wasn’t in front of them.
Two shots, two bodies dropped and one advanced further. He could feel Johnny behind him but he didn’t look back. That was the problem with his beast, he was always too close to comfort. His hunger for something, whatever it was they were coming for was palpable. His scent was thick in the air, guiding Ghost further but reigning him from going too deep. Price was above them, the mountains gave him and Gaz the edge needed to run without being seen. He heard their guns, orders flying from the Captains mouth and Gaz’s grenades dropping into submission. Each unit had their own team and the men kept up fine, it was expected. Nothing less and nothing more. By the time they cut through the ever garden and it's haunting abyss they were met with what looked like a makeshift laboratory in a prison. The moss and leaves covered most of the makeshift paint job and broken bricks. Trees were growing from inside, bushes full of poison ivy and fruit were scattered around, the only thing kept alive. Bodies piled from the outside, men of older ages but who lost their humanity along the way. Their faces were decaying way faster than normal, holes burning from the inside as they stained his walkway.
Sitting on the nearby rock was Sunshine, odd enough for their pack of devils. She was the only bright thing in the woods, her golden hair locked into a tight shift braid and her gun resting beside her. Her back was towards them and Ghost watched as the blood of her victims dripped down her chin. Her head cocked towards him, her blue eyes were electrifying and expressions was blank. She didn’t look at him but past him, the approaching members of their little pack. He didn’t need to guess how long she sat waiting, observing, smelling. Whatever scent plagued the English woods was disgustingly sweet with despair and agony but yet, it had a hint of joy. Something that belonged to them was happy without them, happy in the cage that grew around it.
“Took you long enough, half the recruits emptied their stomachs by the time you were halfway here.” she hummed, her southern drawl practically purring as her eyes motioned to the recruits far away from her. Ghost scowled from behind his mask, beckoning them to the front with the wave of his fingers, something Johnny admired for too long. Price and Gaz, along with their units, stalked forward and shifted out of their forms. Sunshine glanced their way too, straightening slightly as Price walked forward. He eyed the prison cautiously while resting his hand on Sunshine’s shoulder. Nothing short of affection and worry laced their captains eyes, the ruthlessness was hard to stomach. But just as telling. She was watching something, farther than what they could see. Her eyes were frosty and her mouth turned down to a frown, the electricity in her eyes slowly flickered as her sight locked onto what she wanted.
“What do you see, Lass?” Price asked, his thumb grazing the dripping blood slowly and swiping it up with a turn. Her eyes darkened and her head turned down slightly, the others were quiet as they listened to the steady breathing of Sunshine. The breeze picked up the rotting smell of corpses and the iron of the leaking blood.
“It’s stuck in a cage, don’t know what but it’s guarded by iron.” she growled, her grip on the rock cracking it down the center. The ever growing capacity of her emotions wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. The bubbling anger was why they let her go first with the recruits, so they can get a taste of the savagery their Lieutenant is.
Price nodded, gently rubbing her back before stalking his way to Ghost. The rumbling of their bond turned into a small, quiet but still a slither of whimper that turned back into stillness. Whatever was in that cage, Sunshine wanted it now.
“How we gonna do this, Cap?” Ghost inquired, resting his hands in the space between his vest and stomach. Price rested himself close, almost brushing against his shoulder but not quiet. The small distance had caused a small growl to rumble past his lips, not intentionally but it did what it needed as he moved closer.
“Sunshine goes in first, let her clear what’s ever in her path, you and Soap flank to the right with her and your unit but don’t advance before Sunshine. Gaz and I will take the second floor and scavenge for what we can find. No one goes near the iron, not until we know what’s inside.” Price ordered, the men around them taking their weapons and falling to rank. Sunshine pulled herself off the rock, her body suit stained with crimson and her eyes locked on the door. Johnny’s eyes danced with excitement as Ghost walked towards him, his hand finding home into the crook of his neck and being welcomed by a rumble.
“No one goes near the iron, Captain's orders.” Ghost restated, stroking and massaging the center of Johnny’s neck, his eyes dancing with Ghost’s own.
“When have we ever listened to Captain’s orders?” Johnny purred like a devil, his smirk turning far more upward than it should be.

Bezel. It is here, a name. A name born of the verb born of the noun which is a synonym for frame, for barrier, for boundary between symbols and the places which view them. You got that so far? Should I keep going?
There are things, shapes, which don't suffer names well, at least not for long. I met Bezel when I was visiting, playing tourist. It is not a someone, nor an object in the way a particular stone or home may bear a name to distinguish it from others of the same type or class.
A wave is a name we give an abstraction, names we place on different things to confuse ourselves between them. This confusion, surprisingly, is helpful. Not a birch, or a maple, mulberry, or pine, but a tree. Waves pass through water, through metal, and again, metals' sparks.
Why I'm hiring you to write in this particular venue, in this particular way, is so that the little ripples don't get lost just because you (or I for that matter) discard them because we don't understand how they got there. Editing is a useful habit, but not for all uses.
I will make mistakes, you will transcribe oddly or poorly, and if we leave the option open, we will fiddle and tweak and generally make a mess of things by making them legible, presentable, or perhaps acceptable.
Nuggets.
Bertrand.
Sarsaparilla.
There we go, good luck interpolating that.
Alright, time to go back and remind myself of where I was headed. You don't have to include notes like this in the text.
Actually, you know what, go ahead. Just cram it all in there. Seems fitting. Besides, I may add the caveat too late and then you couldn't oblige anyway. No need to put you in a bind like that.
Bezel, that's where I started, I'll continue with that. It's a good glossary word to start with here. Can't have a gate without a boundary, and it sure is tough to get somewhere by having already been there... or, at least tough to give directions that way.
Calling attention to disjoints, faults, gaps, and the like, that seems to be the local language. Walls are good for many things, bad at others, but often good structures on which to rest when tired.
Did you ever notice how few advocacy groups there are for gravity? Or how scant moral codes there are that forbid pickpocket the Sun? A conspicuous lack of charities collecting for the cause of keeping river rocks smooth. And I've never been yelled at for not sweating glass.
There are things that enforce themselves but do so largely unnoticed, and there ate things that enforce themselves which we fancy might do otherwise. And then there are things which we enforce which are enforced by us and need that pressure to not evaporate.
Cold water boils in low enough pressure, and so do some ideas. It is polite to eat with your mouth closed. A particular word means a particular thing. We just don't do that here. That's something something unnatural something something tradition.
Bezel is a character in the story I'm telling, but like how the number twelve is a character in math, or 人 is a character on screen. Story isn't the right word, but it's the one I've gotten hold of and it's in the neighborhood.
It's an act of reminding myself of the local pressure needed to maintain the ecosystem of ideas where I happen to be. A reminder that I can move to somewhere with more or less or different pressure if it suits me or I need a different context.
It is a golden flag of a warning to remind myself to use the door rather than claw at the wall, to do the local bubble the respect of not bursting it without cause. But that is neither here nor there because it is staunchly between.
The panic of feeling every boundary is there to ensnare, impede, or imprison leaves a long wake of leaky membranes, violent depressurization, and a lot of wounds vulnerable to opportunistic infections. Oops. Mistakes worth learning from.
So what is the payload here? Why did I commission this work? And why through such roundabout methods? An abstract device. Seemed the thing to do. Filters.
Absorbing State. Another vocab word for the glossary. One of my personal favorites. An absorbing state is a state that, once entered, one does not exit. That may be water running down hill until it enters the ocean where it stays forever (in an oversimplified model), or death.
Things transition between states. On a technical level, that is the founding principle behind computation, look up Markov Chains if you wanna up the legibility of things in general. Moods, beliefs, and other experiential events can also usefully be described as states.
Let's steal a scene. Juliet on the balcony, lovestruck Romeo below. That's a scene, and just to be pedantic let's map "state" onto "scene" and see where that takes us. Some things have to happen in order for these kids to die for our entertainment.
If lines aren't said, plot ain't played out, sets aren't struck, then these two lovebirds loom peacefully and romantically entwined in Balcony State indefinitely. And, well, hang on, aren't they dead? We saw it happen. Very sad. How are they alive and well in Balcony?
Another reason for going about this project this way is to ensure publication, to cement the digital footprint. Drafts sit and await rigor, await scrutiny, and I love both of those, but I tried to eat them rather than own them. An approach, mine, but not the only or recommended.
The ghosts of discourse still linger in libraries, the academic sort, and they are lovely or terrible or very in their own ways. And the living rampage through songs and drinks and smells as always. But now, we have a nifty sort of substrate between. And not just receipts.
I was frightened to spill ink for a long while. What if I'm misunderstood, or worse what if I am understood but incorrect?!
I thought it was a matter of picking the right cause, of allying myself with whatever was stronger or righter or deeper or taller or betterer. Craved that clear thoughtless ringing of certainty and affirmation. But wait... Hmm...
They, you know the ones, the right ones, the pedestal dwellers, what's this proscenium, what's this stage? What are the chances that this message is compelling because it matches how I'm compelled. Well, that's just doubt. That's probably bad. Am good. Am brave. See me.
Wait a spell, why am I compelled? What are these rewards I'm driven to seek, these hurts I'm calloused to, I should be calloused to, I didn't need it anyway. But if I didn't need it because I'm strong, and I'm doing what they say to get the thing that was mine they took .
Oh. Ohhhhh. Ewwwwwwwww. Get it off let me out get it out of me!
Huh. That's better. What a relief. Wow. Oh wow. This is amazing! Is this what freedom tastes like?!?!
Okay, what's next? Hello? Oh. Yeah. I mean, yay! But, yeah.

ML Group Chat Headcanons
It is canon that the entire class (including Lila, Chloe, and Sabrina who don’t usually hang out with the others) are all in a group chat + Luka + Kagami + Marc, and since that is the greatest gift ML could possibly have ever given me, here all my headcanons. This is so long and I do not even care.
It’s definitely that one group chat that has like fifty messages every half hour. It’s so long and there’s a minimum of five different conversations happening at once that Max programmed Markov to deliver up-to-date developments and highlights whenever someone says, “Wait, what did I miss on the group text?”
Yes, even when everyone is in school, there’s still fifty messages every half hour. Chloe and Alya are skilled at texting without looking at their phones, but Juleka is the true champ of secretive texting and she just spends the day making really funny commentary about school and Luka’s reading them under his desk and trying hard not to die laughing in his class
At least 50% is solely memes, courtesy of Kim, Alix, Adrien, and Nino. They once had a meme off and everyone else simultaneously left the group chat.
25% is Marc and Nathaniel’s comics, Marinette’s designs, Luka’s music, Nino’s music and other art projects being shared with something along the lines of “I don’t think this is any good, but I thought you guys might like it.” And then everyone else loses their minds over it because how are their friends so talented??
The group chat is a dream for Adrien and Kagami because they aren’t allowed to hang out with friends, so they make up for it over text. They’re the first to respond to every single message. It’s a bit of a competition now
Marinette: I don’t know, what do you guys think about this design?
*Cue Kagami and Adrien dropping everything in the middle of fencing and wrestling each other to get to their phone first and tell her how much they love it and adore her work and creativity and she shouldn’t doubt herself because she’s amazing and wonderful-*
Alya: I think it’s great girl :)
Marinette was the one who added Kagami to the group chat (and the separate girl gang group chat).
Kagami’s first text: What’s everyone’s blood type?
Marinette: OMFG lolol
Bonus: Kim now lowkey thinks Kagami is a vampire because he’s never seen her outside and who else would ask that kind of question OBVIOUSLY-
Rose’s good morning and good night texts are like Lin Manuel Miranda’s tweets but add in 100+ gifs of unicorns and rainbows and hearts
Chloe doesn’t like to interact in the group chat much because she’s better than all of them. But she spends hours every night scrolling and catching up on everything like it’s a bedtime story.
Lila’s lies know no bounds in the text chain, but neither does Marinette’s emojii vocabulary. For every Lila text, there’s a Marinette eye-rolling, barfing, angry, or head-exploding emoji to follow
Mylene is always sharing links about environmentalism and creating polls on when everyone’s free to clean litter or plant trees. She keeps the receipts too on who responded and then bailed, and now Nino, Luka, Marinette and Sabrina owe her a Saturday Clean Up.
A lot of times, Marinette stumbles home in the dead of the night after an akuma attack, watches a Chat Noir meme video, and sends it to the group only to get a response from Adrien seconds later.
Marinette: Adrien, what are you doing up so late?
Adrien: Uhhhh, homework! You?
Marinette: Uh, yeah, me too! What’d you get for #7?
And then they’re both internally crying as they have to get out their physics homework now
Ivan invited everyone to a death metal concert, and only Nathaniel and Marc responded. Now they’re all best friends and share links to bands to try and get everyone else on board.
The girl gang try to get Marinette and Adrien together via text because somehow Marinette still stutters around him even over text.
Whenever Adrien compliments Marinette, it’s followed by side-eye emojis and the girls responding, “Hmm, interesting. Anything you want to say to that, Marinette?”
Marinette in the girl group chat: You know that thing you guys keep doing? STOP.
Alix back in the main chat: Hmm, interesting. Anything you want to add, Luka?
That being said, Marinette just about dies every time Adrien and Luka reply to her messages or compliment her stuff and Tikki has to fan her exasperatedly
At least like once a day, there’s the usual:
“Wait, we had homework??” (Nino)
“Hey, does anyone have a spare-” “Oh, I got it!” (Sabrina)
“Has anyone seen Marinette?” (Alya)
Of course with so many people there’s bound to be the occasional disagreement. Max is busy computing the statistics: “That was a 67% effective burn.” “That joke was calculated to be 82% unfunny” “There’s a 93% chance that they won’t forget about it by tomorrow.” “NOT HELPING, MAX.”
Alya is always trying to analyze superhero stuff, but since that’s all she and everyone else in Paris talks about, the kids are super over it.
Alya: Who do you think is Ladybug?
Everyone sends in pictures and videos of Ms. Bustier, Roger the cop, that random pigeon, their shoe, the anime dvd cover, a random supermodel, Marinette tripping into a trash can all with the caption: “This is Ladybug.”
But it’s Kim who almost causes a nuclear war after asking “Who’s better, Ladybug or Chat Noir.”
LADYBUG OFC (Alya, Chloe, Marc, Luka, Adrien)
CHAT NOIR DUH (Lila, Sabrina, Kagami, Nino)
The argument lasts almost 24 hours.
It finally ends with a  4-AM, high-after-an-akuma-attack five paragraph essay (complete with citations from the Ladyblog and a bibliography) from Marinette starting with the phrase “Excuse me?!? If you think for one second that Chat Noir is not the best-” and ends with “I never believed in a world where I would agree with Lila, but here we are. Chat Noir is the best and that is a fact. In conclusion: I said what I said.”
Now everyone thinks Marinette has a crush on Chat Noir.
Alya: I have to screenshot this to the Ladyblog
Marinette: NO. What if he sees it??
Adrien already saw it first thing in the morning. It was the best text he ever received
Then a few days later, Kim goes, “Who do you think is the best superhero after Ladybug and Chat Noir?”
Marinette nearly spits out her tea laughing as all hell breaks loose and the app closes due to an overload of people typing at once.

I finally finished writing up my February playlist for your enjoyment but mostly mine. It’s 48 songs ranging from italian screamo to Celine Dion and you have my personal guarantee you will enjoy at least one of them.
Halftime - Young Thug: There's two parts in this song that are maybe my top two Young Thug moments ever. 1) when he says "I got water I look like I'm fresh from Hawaii" and then makes a noise like a dog shaking himself off 2) the world's longest tyres screeching sound, at about :47, it goes for fully 12 seconds and is absolutely perfect.
Hydrogen - M|O|O|N: Hotline Miami is a good ass game and this song is great but I've got to admit that I only really know it because someone edited a video to make a dog bark the melody line and I think that's very good.
Vale - Bicep: The way the fuzzed out bass rhythm contrasts against how crystal clear and plastic futuristic everything else in this song is is just great. This song reminds me that I should probably listen to Kelala because I've only heard her in features so far and they've all been great.
Sittin' On The Edge Of The Bed Cryin' - The Drones: This is a sort of atypical Drones song because it's not about about a particular thing, it's just about a bad feeling and not being able to see your future because of everything lurking ahead of you. I think that's why I like it so much, because it's just sort of a song about saying 'I feel bad!!' and not having to give a reason.
Golden Dawn - Gospel: I really do think that The Moon Is A Dead world is an all time great album and that it rarely gets talked about anywhere is one of the greatest crimes of underappreciation in music. It's understandable, because it takes a lot for an uncool genre like screamo to get mainstream critical attention the way something like As The Roots Undo did, and mixing that kind of aggression with extremely uncool lengthy 70s prog keyboard solos... look, I get it. But somehow there's nothing uncool about any of this music; it's just deeply felt, radically composed and authentically performed. It's absolutely one of my favourite albums of all time and this is the centrepiece. I was taken with a fantasy this month of doing something very cool and transcribing the drum part of this song just to see it laid out in front of me because it is really a masterpiece. Also there is something very special about imbuing a lyric like 'hey you, you got a cigarette man? you know I know you got one on ya.' with so much gravity that you can't help but yell along.
I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times) (feat. Popcaan & Young Thug) - Jamie xx: Young Thug says he's gonna ride in that pussy like a stroller in this song and that’s when I knew I was in love.
Crow Jane - Skip James: Yet another good song in the pantheon of songs about shooting your wife for being too proud and then immediately regretting it because now you have no wife.
Le Merle Noir - Olivier Messiaen: I think it's really funny that in the classical music canon there is about one hundred freaks who got singularly obsessed with putting their best approximation of bird song in their music. Birds don't even sound that good but in the old days its the closest you had to a markov chain I suppose. Anyway this is a really nice piece that my girlfriend did as one of her flute performances in her music degree and I like it a lot.
Obsession - Animotion: I started watching Comrade Detective this month and the soundtrack is all sorts of very good 80s synthpop. This song especially stood out because in the show it was being performed with accordions in an illegal Romanian casino, but this version is good too.
Back To The Trees - Adele H: Nothing worse than being a musician named Adele and having to go by Adele H because Adele is well and truly taken. I found this album on a random blogspot and it truly felt like 2011 again. This song is like a primitivist hymn sung with a loop pedal, and if you're in the right state of mind it's very moving.
Aries - Lynx: I was doing some googling and ended up finding the band that Dave Konopka from Battles used to be in. This band is good because they're called Lynx and they have a song called Mrs Lynx, and I think it's both prudent and wise to write a wife for your band. This song however, is called Aries. I was hooked from the start-stop drums right at the start, but this is some of my favourite type of math rock. Clean, clear, concise and purposeful and never losing sight of the structure of the song as a whole.
Westham United (live) - Tera Melos: This is the best version of Westham United I've ever heard, and you can hear the lyrics a lot better here than the album version. Tera Melos live are so unbelievably tight it's insane, This is ferocious, god bless Audiotree.
You Let My Tyres Down - Tropical Fuck Storm: Tropical Fuck Storm is Gareth and Fiona from The Drones' new side-project and it sort of just sounds like the Drones with more female harmonies in the background which is good as hell. I love the weird little guitar frills in this where it's mostly pretty chordy and then he does these little hammery runs now and then that really liven the place up.
Fool - Mia Dyson: I have a big thing about Mia Dyson because she made three incredibly good albums and then left Australia to try to make it in America and unfortunately failed, and ever since then all her music has felt like she's aiming toward some kind of crossover appeal instead of just doing what she really wants. But luckily it's finally paying off because this new song sounds like Haim's first album and it's really good so everyone wins.
Are You Ready For The Country? - Neil Young: This is the song I envision playing over the air raid speakers through the city when it all goes down.
Living Through Another Cuba - XTC: Continuing that theme, Stereogum had a very good playlist of the other day called 80s Nuclear Anxiety and I discovered this incredible song in it. This song is good in headphones because someone's doing some very restrained zither playing every 4 bars and once you notice it it's impossible to stop hearing it.
Release - Christoph De Babalon: I found out about this extremely bleak album from the really good reissue review pitchfork had the other day, and this is probably my favourite song on it because I'm basic and it's the most straightforward dnb on here. This album reminds me of Zomby a lot, not only in the music but in the approach where the structures seem to simultaneous reflect someone putting a lot of care into their music and not giving a fuck about it. The individual sounds are so meticulous but the structures of all the songs here are very meandering and feel like they could end at any time or go another ten minutes and you wouldn't notice.
Preachin' Blues - Son House: The idea of joining the preisthood as a way to get out of having to get a real job is a timeless idea that appeals to the teens of today more than ever.
1 di 6 - Raein: What I love about the internet is the way you can just type words in and it will manifest whatever you wish, like a sort of cursed wishing well. In this instance the words I typed were 'italian screamo' and the gift it bestowed was this incredible one-long-song album from Italian screamo band Raein that completely kicked my ass.
A Little Change Could Go A Long Ways - City Of Caterpillar: I've been investigating early 2000s screamo, and in particular Circle Takes The Square's contemporaries and it seems crazy that I've never heard this City Of Caterpillar album until now because at long last it's something that sounds comperable to As The Roots Undo. The extremely brooding, crescendocore post-rock intro that dominates more than half of this 10 minute song gives way to a complete storm. I am absolutely desperate for a screamo revival but it seems like nobody else is.
Jupiter - Cave In: This song is good but it also sounds like it's from a musical, I think it has to do with the clarity of his lyric delivery. It sounds like the difference between American Idiot and American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording, but it's also a very good song.
I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) - Pitbull: I woke up with this song in my head one day which is always a very good song. Also this song has a good sample chain: the beat's sampled from 75 Brasil Street by Nicola Fasano, which samples the horns from The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind) by The Bucketheads which in turn sampled the horns from Street Player by Chicago. How good is music!
Introduce Me To Your Family - Otoboke Beaver: My friend sent me this song because it came up mysteriously in his Discover Weekly and I'm so glad he did. It's good to know that japanese punk has been continuing on and getting more and more insane without me noticing.
Part 5/ The Sun's Gone Dim And The Sky's Gone Grey - Johann Johannsson: RIP to a good man. I was so sad and shocked to hear that Johann Johannsson had died last month. This album is a favourite of mine, and while this song doesn't have the weight it should outside of the context of the rest of the album it is still an incredibly heavy mood and a beautiful piece of music.
Heart - Bertie Blackman: This song feels like the alternate, evil version of Single Ladies by Beyonce to me and I get it stuck in my head all the time.
Acetate - Metz: I'm obsessed with the rhythm of this song, how it just tumbles over itself over and over in this lopsided way and the way that plays against the big straight forward power line of this song: I. WANT. YOU. TO. TAKE. IT. AWAY.
Bodysnatchers - Radiohead: It's funny to think of Johnny Greenwood as a film composer, and especially as the composer of the Phantom Thread when he does songs like this. This song is just straight up Riffs. The most air-guitarable Radiohead song outside of Creep.
Nameless, Faceless - Courtney Barnett: I'm so glad Courtney Barnett is back and her new song is an absolute killer! I can't get enough of it and I cannot wait for the album.
Can't Fight The Moonlight - LeAnn Rimes: This is a song written from the perspective of a vampire, and a banger. The instumentation in this is a perfect distillation of everything good about 90s pop. Especially the bizzare chunky guitar and orchestra stab that starts it off. The big bass sound and orchestra stabs in the chorus? I'm kissing my fingers like a chef right now.
Lava Lamp (Chopnotslop Remix) - Thundercat: It sounds strange but the chopped and screwed version of Drunk is fast becoming my favourite version. Firstly because it's very appropriately named Drank and secondly because the biggest obstacle to me getting heavily into this album was that it was just way too busy sometimes, a flaw that has been perfectly surmounted by chopping but NOT slopping the entire thing.
Someplace - Yamantake // Sonic Titan: I am desperate for more from this band. I absolutely love this mix of airy guitar and vocals suddenly moving into very classic metal. It's very theatrical and I absolutely love it.
Jejune Stars - Bright Eyes: Remember how Bright Eyes last album had extremely heavy Rastafarian But Not Reggae influences for some reason? I loved that. The guy talking about Pomegranates at the end of this song, and especially the way he pronounces pomegranate has become a staple of my inner monologue.
New Coke - Health: God Health are just so powerful. I want them to score a film some day soon, because they did a great job with Max Payne 3 and their sort of singular aesthetic is just so intoxicating. I go through stages of not listening to Health for months and then it's all I want to listen to for hours and hours very loudly.
3AM - Matchbox Twenty: Check this out: Rob Thomas has the exact same voice as Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance
Is That All There Is? - Peggy Lee: I was thinking about Trump's weird brain, which I believe to be a sort of smooth pebble covered in mashed banana, and so I googled his favourite song, and it is this. He says "It’s a great song because I’ve had these tremendous successes and then I’m off to the next one. Because, it’s like, “Oh, is that all there is?” That’s a great song actually, that’s a very interesting song, especially sung by her, because she had such a troubled life.". Listen to this extremely nihilistic song and imagine him swanning around with his weird body and singing along to it please.
New Town - Life Without Buildings: Life Without Buildings reinvented songwriting and nobody even cared. It's unbelievable. This song is an incredible end to their incredible album that feels like it was written just for me. I love Life Without Buildings!
Music For The Long Emergency - Policia & s t a r g a z e: Polica's new album with the stargaze orchestra is unfortunately kind of mixed but luckily the title track is very, very good. It feels like a real textural expansion of everything Polica's been doing before, to have so many more layers to play with really benefits them but the songs are thankfully still rooted in the drums, bass and vocals combo like usual and haven't gotten lost in the possibilities of playing with an orchestra. The synth sound that begins about halfway through this is so thick and so nice and really takes the whole thing in a different direction for the second half.
Carnival Of Sorts (Boxcars) - R.E.M.: I'm really loving R U Talkin R.E.M. Re: Me? and so far and the main difference I've found between it and UTU2TM is that every single R.E.M. song sounds exactly the same. They're very good, but it's one song. So when they go through the album track by track and talk about what the love about each one it almost sounds farcical. They could be playing the same song 12 times in a row and I wouldn't notice. That said, this one differentiates itself by starting with a weird circus organ before beginning The R.E.M. Song so I appreciate it for that.
Give Me A Smile - Sibylle Baier: As I understand it, Sibylle Baier was warned about the existence of music blogspots some time in the early 70s and started living her whole life from then on in the hopes of being the source of a good post. This album was released in 2006 and is made up mostly of reel-to-reel recordings she made at her home in Germany in 1970-73, except for this track which was included on a 1970 compilation called Folk Is A Four Letter Word 2 which I think was the only commercial recording she ever made before quitting music and acting entirely, moving to America and starting a family. 30 years later her son made a cd of the songs to give to family and friends and somehow one made its way to J Mascis of all people and he had it released on his label Orange Twin.
III. Toccare - John Adams: This piece came up in my Release Radar playlist because of the day a couple of years ago when I listened to Nixon In China twice in a row. I don't know anything about it but I love it a lot and am particularly in love with the bass guitar that comes in about a third of the way through and then disappears entirely. What a choice.
Saturdays (feat. Haim) - Twin Shadow: On Twin Shadow's last album he made a swing at Big Chorus all-out commercial pop and it didn't go perfectly so I'm very glad he's back to his old ways because this song is just amazing. Every part of this song is catchy. The chorus is so satisfying because it has about it has about three different sections and it builds beautifully. Haim are here doing great. It's just perfect and I can't wait for the album.
Because I'm Me - The Avalanches: Wildflower didn't get the respect it deserved in my opinion. It quite literally sounds like it could have come out the year after Since I Left You, which is a very good thing! I'm also a huge fan of fading a whole song down right in the middle just to play a sample of someone quietly saying 'hello?' like they're answering a phone.
Bats In The Attic - King Creosote & Jon Hopkins: I've never heard another album that sounds like this one. Every part of the recording just sounds so beautiful it's like it was handmade from silk or something. Listening to this after literally anything else feels like a chilled glass of water on a hot day. King Creosote's voice also has the very beautiful paradoxical qualities of a scottish accent mixed with incredibly clear enunciation and I really love it. I'd love them to do another album together.
Another Man - Barbara Mason: Check out this song. First of all it sounds extremely good. Secondly it's about when your man turns out to be gay. It starts out good but by the last verse it is straight up hateful, calling him defective, not entirely a man and a 'facsimile of a man' which is unbelievably cruel. The way she says it is very good though because she says "Because in my case what I thought I had was not a entire whole man, but a facsimile thereof. Wasn't a clone or nothin', you know, I'm not.." and then she trails off. Glad she clarified this wasn’t a clone situation. Weird, mean, good song.
Monument (T.I.E. Version) - Robyn & Royksopp: The original version of this song is long as hell and a lot more on the ominous side of the ominous/menacing scale, whereas this version pushes the slider all the way up on 'menacing' with the huge distorted bassline leading the whole thing. A perfect song for obelisk worship in the grim electronic future, or even for carving your own obelisk in preparation.
Everybody Knows - Leonard Cohen: Hey remember when Leonard Cohen died and bleedingcool.com had the best headline of all time "Genius Songwriter Of Music From “Watchmen” Sex Scene Dead At 82". I think about that all the time. Anyway this song is great but that's obvious.
E-Mail My Heart - Britney Spears: Britney Spears first album is good cause Hit Me Baby One More Time is about pagers and this song is about emails. Teens love to communicate, and they've only grown to love it more since this song came out. In Britney's own words in 1999: "E-mail My Heart is a song that everyone can relate to, everyone’s been doing e-mails and it’s “e-mail my heart” so everyone can relate to that song.“ True.
It's All Coming Back To Me Now - Celine Dion: This song is deluxe. This song sounds like it was recorded in an expansive marble bathroom and I feel like I should have to be wearing a suit just to listen to it. This song has 15 cup holders and comes with power windows as standard. This song sounds like someone paid November Rain $100 to attend a fancy party with them and pretend to be their boyfriend but then they accidentally fell in love for real.

How Ads Data Hub works
Google Ad Platforms
Google-owned Cloud project
Ads Data Hub
Your Cloud project
Linking your data
Ads Data Hub enables customized analysis that aligns with your specific business objectives, while protecting user privacy and upholding Google’s high standards of data security. Combining your data with event-level data from your Google ad campaigns can unlock insights, improve advertising efficiency, help you achieve data-driven business goals, yield more effective campaign optimization, and more.
Results from the queries you run using Ads Data Hub are written to BigQuery datasets in a Cloud project that you own (“your Cloud project”). You can combine your data within your Cloud project with Google’s data to evaluate the efficacy of your ads, and much more.
Ads Data Hub ensures end-user privacy by enforcing privacy checks and aggregating Google data before it leaves the Google-owned Cloud project.

How Ads Data Hub works
Ads Data Hub reads data from a Google-owned Cloud project, and writes aggregated Google campaign data to your Cloud project:
Read: The Google-owned Cloud project, which contains Google ad data from your campaigns across multiple buying platforms, such as Display & Video 360, Google Ads, Campaign Manager 360, and YouTube.
Ads Data Hub can read data from your Cloud project when you grant it explicit permission to. This is what enables linking Google’s data with your data.
Write: Your Cloud project. The results of the queries you run in Ads Data Hub are exported as aggregated Google campaign datasets into your Cloud project, and stored there.
Privacy is maintained through the separation of Google’s Cloud project and your Cloud project—both for end-user data, and your data. Google’s raw data set is not accessible to Ads Data Hub users, and Ads Data Hub only accesses data within your Cloud project—with your permission—for the purposes of joining your data.
The ecosystem surrounding Ads Data Hub is shown in the following diagram. Each component is explained below:
Google Ad Platforms
Upstream Google ad platforms input event-level ad data into the Google-owned Cloud project. These data sources consist of the ad links which you authorize in your Ads Data Hub account.
Learn more about linking accounts in Ads Data Hub
Google-owned Cloud project
This Cloud project is owned and managed by Google, and it contains Google campaign data. The event data in this project persists for 13 months, after which it is deleted.
Note: Data in the Google-owned Cloud project begins populating after account links are approved — it is not backfilled.
Ads Data Hub
This is the product itself. Using either the Ads Data Hub UI or API, you can write queries to access aggregated Google ad data, manage account settings, and more. Ads Data Hub doesn’t require you to download any software, or install and run any code locally.
The Ads Data Hub UI and API act as an intermediary between both Google’s Cloud project and your Cloud project, ensuring that your query results pass privacy checks.
Your Cloud project
Results from the queries you write in Ads Data Hub are written to BigQuery datasets in your Cloud project. Additionally, if you work with CRM or offline data in Ads Data Hub, this is where you upload that data.
Linking your data
You can configure Ads Data Hub to key event-level data to unique user identifiers. These identifiers are sent to Google when users interact with your ads. After working with Google to set this up, you can write queries that join data in the Google-owned Cloud project with the data that you store in your Cloud project.
Your data remains in your Cloud project throughout the entire process—Google only operates on the data that you explicitly reference in your SQL queries. Joins are privacy-centric and are keyed to a unique user identifier of your choosing. This ensures that end-user data remains secure.

Making Minty Fresh Music With Markov Chains: The After Eight Step Sequencer
Step sequencers are fantastic instruments, but they can be a little, well, repetitive. At it’s core, the step sequencer is a pretty simple device: it loops through a series of notes or phrases that are, well, sequentially ordered into steps. The operator can change the steps while the sequencer is looping, but it generally has a repetitive feel, as the musician isn’t likely to erase all of the steps and enter in an entirely new set between phrases.
Enter our old friend machine learning. If we introduce a certain variability on each step of the loop, the instrument can help the musician out a bit here, making the final product a bit more interesting. Such an instrument is exactly what [Charis Cat] set out to make when she created the After Eight Step Sequencer.
The After Eight is an eight-step sequencer that allows the artist to set each note with a series of potentiometers (which are, of course, housed in an After Eight mint tin). The potentiometers are read by an Arduino, which passes MIDI information to a computer running the popular music-oriented visual programming language Max MSP. The software uses a series of Markov Chains to augment the musician’s inputted series of notes, effectively working with the artist to create music. The result is a fantastic piece of music that’s different every time it’s performed. Make sure to check out the video at the end for a fantastic overview of the project (and to hear the After Eight in action, of course)!
[Charis Cat]’s wonderful creation reminds us of some the work [Sara Adkins] has done, blending human performance with complex algorithms. It’s exactly the kind of thing we love to see at Hackaday- the fusion of a musician’s artistic intent with the stochastic unpredictability of a machine learning system to produce something unique.
Thanks to [Chris] for the tip!

An article to understand the existing state of blockchain games
Along with currency and finance in the blockchain field, games have also been attracting attention. You start with CryptoKitties, it has ignited people's enthusiasm for blockchain games. However, due to problems such as user encounter and scalability, blockchain games have been around in a small-level state. So, from what extent is the current blockchain sport progressing? Does it have any hope later on? Regardless, there's an undeniable fact that compared to 2 yrs ago, the existing research and growth and funds invested in blockchain games have greatly improved, and the number of users has also increased a lot. As more pleasurable blockchain games enter the market, it'll allow gamers to slowly realize the distinction between blockchain games and traditional games, and gradually it'll open up its territory. Blockchain games cannot replace traditional games. But because of its unique characteristics, such as prop ownership, cross-sport asset trading, etc., it'll grow up 1 day. Although DeFi is among the most most important direction of dApp growth in 2019, blockchain games haven't weakened because of this. Some fresh games have been launched this year. Based on the number of energetic wallets, some of them have rapidly developed into the most famous dApps. Furthermore, some older games remain competing for the very best spot. Because of this, when we enter the 4th quarter, at least four games have more than 2,000 daily energetic wallets. Five hottest blockchain games (calculated based on the 30-time rolling typical of DAU) Rise and fall 2019 started as a blockchain game leader. EOS Knights is developed by a little Korean team. This is a casual RPG game, in which all game operations are dealings on the EOS blockchain. EOS Knights is quite popular inside South Korea and China. It achieved sustained growth in the first quarter of 2019 and arrived at a peak of 7,000 everyday actives in early March. Since then, it has steadily declined, which may be due to two reasons: one is that it lacks long-term retention, and another can be that it has adopted even more aggressive anti-robot methods. EOSKnights daily action statistics (calculated based on the original, 30-time and 90-time rolling averages respectively) In the blockchain world, it really is difficult to clearly distinguish how many active wallet addresses will be the real gamers. It can vary widely, with respect to the particular style of the game and the blockchain which it runs. There is no doubt that casual games working on EOS will attract higher-degree robots than collectible games such as crypto cat games working on Ethereum. However, with the introduction of various other meta game features, EOS Knights has now stabilized its users at around 3,000 day to day activities. It is worthy of noting that the new version of the game "Klaytn Knights" will undoubtedly be launched on the Klaytn blockchain of the Korean quick messaging giant Kakao, and it will also be supported by Korean cellular phone manufacturers Samsung and LG. Put simply, EOS Knights is most beneficial considered an experiment, and its improved version is going to be used by thousands of people. (Glowing blue Fox Note: Thanks to the effective channel capabilities of Kakao quick messaging and Samsung and LG cell phones, it could reach more users, that's, the Klaytn Knights sport based on the Klaytn blockchain is enhanced on the successful experience of EOS Knights , Upgrade to better works, and may end up being touched by more folks, so as to achieve wider user adoption.) It's time to upgrade Another blockchain sport from Asia, it really is "My Crypto Heroes" produced by the Japanese. It runs on the Ethereum blockchain and skilled different take-offs in 2019. At the beginning of 2019, it had about 200 daily active wallets each day, but in February it added registration providers, and the number of daily active wallets all of a sudden skyrocketed to nearly 2,000. With a payment of 0.1ETH, gamers can receive everyday benefits, such as experience enhancement, fresh characters, in-sport currency, and unlocking fresh arenas. Indeed, such benefits are very generous. For gamers who are interested in playing this sport anytime, this is effortless. Combined with probably the most energetic NFT role market segments, the effect is that Our Crypto Heroes has steadily grown in order to approximately 3,000 DAU, that was only suppressed by the upsurge in gas charges for transactions on the Ethereum blockchain within September. As gas costs have fallen, users of the game have rebounded to the level of August. MyCryptoHeroesDAU data (calculated based on the original, 30-time, and 90-time rolling average) It is worthy of pointing out that you can have fun with the "My Crypto Heroes" game like a traditional centralized sport without using any blockchain features, such as character ownership, dealings, and subscriptions. Tokyo Double.Jump, the programmer of the "My Crypto Heroes" sport, claims that only one-3rd of gamers have interacted with its blockchain elements. That is irrelevant to this article, nonetheless it can also remind us that future blockchain games could be games that mix on-chain and off-chain activities. The rise of EOS games When it comes to new blockchain games which have been successful in 2019, it has a clear trend. The following games are running on the EOS blockchain, including Prospectors (explorer, released in June), EOS Dynasty (EOS Dynasty, released in May) and Crypto Sword & Magic (encrypted sword and magic, released in June). In addition, they also have different experiences. Prospectors can be an economic simulation on the theme of the Crazy West, produced by developers from Eastern European countries. EOS Dynasty is really a Chinese medieval kingdom theme much like EOS Knights. Crypto Sword & Magic is really a blockchain version of the Facebook sport successfully produced by Korean programmer NOD Games. Prospectors and EOS Dynasty will be the most successful of these three games: in all respects, each has won first place in the position of the very most popular blockchain games, with a maximum of 3,000 DAU. It could be seen that the gamers of Crypto Sword & Magic are developing, but the order of magnitude is lower. It currently has about 800 DAU. Raw DAU data for the 3 EOS games Prospectors, CryptoSword&Magic; and EOSDynasty One more thing will probably be worth noting. As stated previously, because Prospectors and EOS Dynasty make use of their very own tokens, they can be monetized from the game economy, that will stimulate gamers to use robots for financial benefits. That is not the same as the case of Crypto Sword & Magic, which only uses EOS as the project currency. Now, DappRadar attaches excellent importance to this uncertainty. We filtration system the raw data and remove traffic that people consider to end up being manipulable. More features will undoubtedly be introduced later on to further mark such actions, specifically on the EOS chain. Some dApp developers are also very open to zero tolerance. For example, Tokyo Double.Jump, the programmer of "My Crypto Heroes", stated: "We often follow bots through the use of Google reCAPTCHA and other tools. As soon as detected, we will immediately ban them." What's next? There is no reason to end this article with frustration. The field of blockchain games is still really active. The current game is only a small area of the total number of tasks in each growth stage, and 2020 is a essential period for this emerging industry. High-profile project launches include Blockade Games' Neon District, Pixowl's The Sandbox, Animoca's F1 Delta Period, and Experimental's CryptoWars (all running on Ethereum), and Blankos Block Party working on EOS.
Even yet in the latter area of the fourth one fourth, Lucid Sight's Crypto Area Commander and Immutable's Gods Unchained and other games have entered the general public beta stage, and the release of Decentraland is going to support the release of games much like Battle Racers. And these are just area of the blockchain game tasks we are talking about. There are various other tasks in growth, but we will not make sure they are public for the time being. Wonderful previously

Updates | Week 12 : more tutorials…. Process development
Tumblr media
I think i forgot to mention that in the beginning I was focusing more on using Processing to help me out with my project, but eventually after delving between processing and p5js, I found that the interface of p5js was really intuitive. And the web editor they have is really handy.
I also decided to move away from Markov chains because the idea of predicting and having an algorithm decide the poetry didn’t sit right with me and the conceptual part for my project. I want this project to focus mainly on how the lights can be translated into messages of hope during quarantine. So I looked into how I could use the ‘0’s and ‘1’s to select a word from a column of words from poetry that related to ‘light’ and ‘darkness’ .
Process development #7
Use the 8 value string from each apartment ➜ each ‘0’ and ‘1’ will be assigned a word ➜ the string will be translated into a binary number ➜ number determines the colour value ➜ the first 3 apartment values determine if it sits in the blue value, red value, green value or if its grey ➜ outcome is a collection of postcards from each apartment each day.

How I Attempted To Mathematically Model the Spread of Memes on the Internet, pt 1.
This is my first ever /actual/ Tumblr post, so first of all, let’s hope I’m doing this right.
I’ll make my introduction fairly brief as to get to the mathematics ASAP. This was part of my senior project for my mathematics B.S. (which I am very close to completing!). I presented parts of this research at the Michigan MAA Section Meeting in April of 2017. And I am really excited to share what I found in a more casual setting (rather than in a formal paper for my class or a conference presentation).
So let’s get to it, eh?
For the first installment of this series, I want to touch on two main things:
Why Did I Decide To Do This?
Things You Need To Know Before We Can Get To The Cool Stuff (I Know, I Know, But You Need To Know These Things)
Why Did I Decide To Do This?
My senior mathematics capstone course was on the topic of Markov chains. The main purpose of this class was for each student to complete an individual research project. I struggled for quite some time to determine what I wanted to do my project on. I eventually settled on disease modeling, but found myself disinterested with the material. I credit one visit to my advisor’s office for what sparked in me the most academic drive and passion for a project I’ve ever had.
I walked in, planning on just talking about my ideas for my disease modeling project. My advisor suggested that I could use this sort of model to work with other things, and me, being the Internet-addicted smart ass that I am, asked, “Like memes?”
So here we are.
Things You Need To Know Before We Can Get To The Cool Stuff
First, I’m assuming that you are familiar with the following concepts from linear algebra:
Matrix algebra
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
Diagonalizing matrices
For the sake of time and length, I leave reviewing those as an exercise to the reader. Ha, I’ve always wanted to say that.
So I’ll begin with Markov chains.
A Markov chain is a stochastic process where the probability of being in the current state is dependent solely on the previous state you were in.
What’s an example of this?
Suppose you are playing a game on a rectangular board of 7 squares. Your piece starts on the center square. For each move, you have a probability of 1/3 of moving to the left (which I'll denote L) and a probability of 2/3 of moving to the right (which I'll denote R). If you get all the way to the right, you win! However, if you get all the way to the left, you lose (*sadface*). Once you reach either the leftmost square or the rightmost square, you can’t move out of them. We’ll talk about this in more detail later, but these are what we call absorbing states.
See below for the starting position.
Tumblr media
Say your first four moves are R, L, R, R.
Tumblr media
Your probability of moving to the right is still 2/3 and your probability of moving to the left is still 1/3. Much like the honey badger, the probabilities don’t care that you moved R, L, R, R already; they are still the same as before. Examining this as a Markov chain is nice because it allows us to answer two important and interesting questions:
What is the probability of winning after a certain number of moves?
What is the average number of moves it takes until I win?
I’ll attempt to answer question 1, and I’ll leave question 2 as an exercise.
In order to find the probability, we must first create a transition matrix. The transition matrix, $T$, is a matrix where $T_{i,j}$ is the probability of getting to the $i^{th}$ state from the $j^{th}$ state. In this example, each state is a square on our board. Our transition matrix looks something like this:
Tumblr media
Let’s discuss!
We note that every column sums to 1. This makes sense! We have to move every turn, so the sum of the different probabilities of leaving each state should equate to exactly 1. We also note that $T_{1,1}$ and $T_{7,7}$ are both equal to 1. These are our absorbing states! Absorbing states are those states where the probability of returning to itself is exactly 1. So, you’re essentially trapped (mwa-ha-ha) in these absorbing states.
How does this help us find the probability of winning?
Excellent question! If we want to find the probability of being in the $i^{th}$ state after starting in the $j^{th}$ state after n moves, we simply find $T^n_{i,j}$. This can be done using your favorite computing software (I personally opt for SageMath), or if you’re feeling particularly ambitious, you can do it by hand (but I don’t recommend this, for the sake of your health).
So if I want to find the probability of winning the game in at most, say, 10 moves, I would look at $T^{10}_{7,4}$, as this entry shows the probability of ending in the 7th state (win!) from the 4th state. Additionally, I could also find the probability of losing after at most 10 moves by looking at $T^{10}_{1,4}$.
Here’s $T^{10}$ as outputted by SageMath:
Tumblr media
Our $T_{7,4}$ entry is $\approx$ 0.7133, giving us a nice 71.33% chance of winning the game in at most 10 moves!
We can continue to raise $T$ to higher and higher powers and see if we can find the values that the probabilities approach, but there’s an easier way! We can find the steady state distribution of our transition matrix.
The steady state distribution is the vector that when we multiply $T$ by this vector, we just obtain the same vector. In other words, it’s a vector $v$ of probabilities such that $vT = v$. Also, this vector $v$ is actually the eigenvector associated with the eigenvalue of 1!
For the sake of time, and since I’m assuming you’re comfortable with matrix algebra, I’ll leave the solution to you.
After finding the steady state distribution, we can determine that the overall probability of winning is 8/9 and the overall probability of losing is 1/9. Good odds!
How does this fit into my research? / Preview for the next post!
I’ll talk more in the next post about how I viewed the spread of memes as a Markov chain, but in general, I worked sort of backwards from how I solved this example. In my research, I don’t know my probabilities, and my goal is to try to find them! So I use these ideas to create some ~pretty dope~ equations involving these unknown probabilities and try to match these equations to data sets I obtain from Google Trends. Of course, this will make more sense with my future posts!
Hope you enjoyed! Any questions/comments/concerns, feel free to send me an ask.
Best wishes and stay positive!
(I promise that wasn’t a math pun)
(Okay, maybe it was)
Update: Here’s Part 2 of this series.
