The Saint: The Gadic Collection (5.27, ITC, 1967)
"He believed that people who are foolish deserve to be separated from their money."
"Well, I must confess, I feel the same way myself sometimes."
#the saint#the gadic collection#1967#itc#leslie charteris#freddie francis#philip broadley#roger moore#peter wyngarde#georgia brown#michael ripper#martin benson#andre van gyseghem#nicole shelby#hedger wallace#henry lincoln#paul darrow#geoffrey cheshire#ann tirard#andreas malandrinos#bakshi prem#and so s5 draws to a close. this production block had actually consisted of 30 odd episodes but a couple were held over for s6 which would#take more than a year to appear on screens. quite why that happened‚ as with much of the scheduling and itinerary of this show‚ remains a#mystery to me for now. this is a suitably grand finále‚ with a strong cast. curiously there is no credited writer onscreen (network credit#Broadley on the dvd sleeve). Wyngarde returns as guest star‚ but gets no fave spotted post from me this time; I've also largely tried to#avoid images with him in for this post. unfortunately a fairly good ep is rendered distasteful (and has fully understandably been dropped#from the current itv4 repeats) by one of the worst and most offensive cases of brownface I've come across in old tv. there's no excusing it#and it looks‚ frankly‚ ridiculous as well as deeply troubling. a very disappointing element of an otherwise entertaining episode#paul darrow also turns up and is also playing a native of Istanbul but happily does not appear to be under heavy makeup.. nor do much of#the guest cast‚ and certainly nobody near Wyngarde's level of makeup. which makes one wonder what happened and why on earth

After a successful radio series, then book series, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy made the jump to television on January 5th, 1981. Most of the principle cast of the radio series kept their same roles - Simon Jones (Arthur Dent), Peter Jones (the Book), Mark Wing-Davey (Zaphod Beeblebrox), and Stephen Moore (Marven the Paranoid Android) - but Ford Prefect was recast to David Dixon as the producer didn't consider Geoffery McGivern weird enough looking and Trillian was recast to Sandra Dickenson due to Susan Sheridan being unavailable. The show also kept the same theme, but with a new arangement. The first episode followed the introduction of both the radio series and book series, with Arthur Dent trying to prevent his house from being knocked down only to find out his friend was an alien and the Earth was about to be destroyed to make a Galatic Bypass. ("Episode 1", The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, TV, Event)

The Saint: The Reluctant Revolution (5.4, ITC, 1966)
"You seem to know a lot about what's happening in our small country?"
"Well, I know from what I've seen so far that the sooner you get rid of this present lot, the better."
"Good! Then, uh, then you will... you will help us?"
"I was just waiting for the invitation."
#the saint#the reluctant revolution#itc#leslie charteris#john stanton#leslie norman#roger moore#barry morse#jennie linden#martin benson#peter illing#gerard heinz#michael godfrey#peter halliday#john garrie#louis raynor#maria roza#norman florence#clive cazes#a familiar Saint plot‚ as Simon gets mixed up in the civil unrest of a fictional country (this week‚ San Pablo) and throws his lot in with#the rebels. it's worth noting tho that this feels like a somewhat darker treatment of the trope; Simon is witness to the execution by#firing squad of an 18yr old boy‚ and later is present (if not actively involved) for the killing of a traitor in the rebel ranks. a solid#cast of familiar faces but the stand out is of course Barry Morse‚ in one of his earliest british tv appearances; despite being english by#birth and having got his start at RADA‚ Morse had spent most of his career in the US until this point‚ including a long running co starring#role on The Fugitive (and guest spots in iconic series like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits). he'd end up as something of an ITC#regular‚ later taking supporting roles in The Adventurer and Space: 1999. here he's an american crook who's attached himself to the#president of San Pablo; actually the show is almost subversive in its depiction of this state being controlled by a local officials whose#greed and corruption is exploited by US agents (not just the crook played by Morse‚ but brief mention of US oil concerns playing a major#role in determining the current and future policies of this country). i mean the CIA aren't mentioned by name but it doesn't take a lot of#squinting to read between those lines...

As George [Martin], Brian, and Judy looked on in horror, one of the diplomats’ wives sneaked up behind Ringo and, with her nail scissors at the ready, snipped a sizable lock of his hair as an impromptu souvenir. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” the usually amiable drummer shrieked. “It almost created a diplomatic incident,” George wrote. Not surprisingly, the bandmates and their entourage beat a hasty retreat, with John later saying, “Some bloody animal cut Ringo’s hair. I walked out, swearing at all of them, I just left in the middle of it.” But of course, it was worse than that. In an instant, George and the Beatles had been reminded, in a deeply personal way, about the role of class in British social politics. Already keenly aware of their social station, the bandmates couldn’t help but feel that the event had put them in their place. […] The incident made for yet another reminder, as [Ringo] would later put it, that to the kinds of folks who frequent high-society embassy soirees, the Beatles would always be “shitkickers from Liverpool.” Perhaps even worse yet, it was how, in their darkest moments, the Beatles (and possibly even George, their elder statesman) still saw themselves. Photographer Harry Benson was especially struck by the group’s reaction as they left the embassy that night. “They were very sad,” he later remarked. “They looked as if they wanted to cry, John, in particular. They weren’t pugnacious. They were humiliated.”
[—from Maximum Volume: The Life of Beatles Producer George Martin, Kenneth Womack]

Loki S2 Premiere Review | The Consequences
Loki season 2 has premiered and it's an eagle-eyed fan's dream. #TomHiddleston #OwenWilson #Marvel #Loki #MCU #DisneyPlus
CASTEric Martin (Head writer), Justin Benson, and Aaron Moorhead (Directors)Tom HiddlestonOwen WilsonGugu Mbatha-RawWunmi MosakuJonathan Majors Sophia Di Martino Review Loki S1 surprised me in many ways and set itself apart from the other Disney+ Marvel TV Shows by, among other things, its scope. It made perfect sense that it was the first series to get a second season, the trailer looked great…
