On Friday I baked Mazanec – a Czech traditional Easter currant bun – and went for a walk. This is the first Easter I'm spending home with my husband, not visiting any of our families, and I'm really glad. I have a lot of free time and the days are going by fast. I'm reading, learning Swedish, going for walks. Today I spoke German on Discord for an hour and a half and I'm so proud of myself for that! I doubt my German abilities so much, it's nice to see that I'm able to speak it – yes, with mistakes, but I'm able to communicate more or less what I want. I'll bake another Mazanec today, since you're supposed to make it only on Easter and I love eating it, I need to make use of it and bake some more.

Easter - entirely for the pastries!! I hate Czech cuisine but our pastries fuck. Jidáše my beloved they are a very sweet pastry lathered in honey and it is an insane amount of fun to watch people try to eat them. Personally I just go fuck it we ball and wash my hands afterwards but my father and sister do not and it is very fun to watch them try to not make a mess of it. Mazanec also fucks but that is just vánočka without the fun shape so unfortunately not that neat

Christmas - if Easter wasn't this week I would say Christmas first because of Christmas cookies. The aforementioned vánočka obviously fucks too and don't let wikipedia lie to you it is not that hard to make, it is just a yeast based dough which is a bitch to make any time no matter the pastry/baked good

Advent (last four Sundays before Christmas) - okay I might be cheating with this because this is technically Christmas but also, this and Christmas are separate and I make the rules on this blog so it counts. Because it is such a stretch of time before Christmas we have ample amounts of time to prepare aka make Christmas cookies. I have also been making the family advent wreath since elementary and I do enjoy a good crafts project so thats always fun

Pálení čarodějnic (April 30th) - we stole this from Germans apparently so it's called Walpurgis Night (fork found in the kitchen. sort of what happens when your culture gets yeeted to hell by Austria/Austria-Hungary for several centuries) but from how I know it, it is a massive bonfire and the entire town gets together. In recent years as an adult it is also a wonderful time to go get drunk with friends one town over. Which leads me to (and at this point I have ran out of semi serious reasons so I am getting a bit unhinged):

May 1st - okay this is officially Labor day but emotionally for me its always been the day to sleep in after I was up for too long at pálení čarodějnic. My father lovingly says its a holiday only because everyone would call out of work anyway after pálení čarodějnic and as an adult I do have to agree with him. So I enjoy it lol

Adam Smith Departs Nailers for Czech Republic

The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced that defenseman Adam Smith has elected to leave the team and continue his career in Europe with HC Oceláři Třinec, who plays in the Czech Extraliga, which is the top hockey league in the Czech Republic. Smith, 26, came to the Nailers just after the start of the 2020-21 season, and spent the majority of the next three campaigns with the club. Adam was a key player both on the ice and in the locker room, as he was part of the team's leadership group and was an alternate captain in two of his three seasons. The Sharon, Ontario native saw his productivity increase each year, and he finished his Wheeling career with 13 goals, 40 assists, 53 points, and a +26 rating in 152 games. Smith earned AHL playing time in each of the last two seasons as well, as he appeared in seven games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, while starting on an ECHL contract. Additionally, he earned the Nailers 2021-22 Community Award. "We are very thankful for three special seasons with Adam, as he played a major role in helping to change the culture of our team," said Nailers Head Coach Derek Army. "We would have loved to have had him finish this season here with us, but our organization takes pride in helping players advance in their careers, and this will be a big step for him." Adam joins HC Oceláři Třinec, who is currently ranked fourth in the Czech Extraliga with 67 points. HC Oceláři Třinec is the defending champion, as it defeated Sparta Praha in six games in last year's final. There are five former NHL players on the team's roster - Marko Dano, Jakub Jerabek, Martin Marincin, Marek Mazanec, and Andrej Nestrasil. "I am so fortunate to have had the privilege of playing for the Wheeling Nailers," Smith said. "Wheeling was always a special place that I was sad to leave and excited to return to. I want to thank Brian Komorowski and Derek Army for helping me develop as a player, a teammate and a person. Only those in it can understand how special the culture they've created is. I'm forever grateful to have gotten to wear the Nailers uniform and play in front of Nailers Army. Wheeling will forever feel like home." Wheeling has suspended Smith, so that it is able to retain his ECHL rights. The Nailers will return home this weekend, where they will play five of their next six games. The first of those contests is a Frosty Friday against the Iowa Heartlanders on February 3rd at 7:10. Iowa will be the opponent the next night as well, which is Pups & Pucks Night at 7:10 on February 4th, when fans are invited to bring their dogs to the game.
