Is the Monégasque Princess dragging Ferrari's golden boy down with her?

Now, dear reader, this is a bold claim for us here at the Monaco Press to make. But we've seen this happen before. We saw this happen with Frédéric Archambeau, the Instagram star from Paris. The party princess dragged him down to her level and, until his mention in this publication, he had faded into irrelevancy.

Even without his newfound relationship with Princess Y/N, Charles Leclerc is already a mega star. He is a phenomenal driver, with many eccentric adventures outside of his racing career. The latest of his adventures, it seems, is to join the royal family.

It should not have come as a surprise when Charles Leclerc was seen leaving a local dive bar with his arm around the princess. It wasn't a romantic scene. No, the party princess was hanging onto Leclerc for dear life as he helped her into his car.

The Hole In The Wall isn't the kind of place Charles Leclerc is expected to be seen. Where will the part princess drag him to next? And when will we see his reputation crumble?

She woke up, her head pounding as she looked around her bedroom. Her bedroom. She rarely ended up in her bedroom after a night like the last.

What had happened? She barely remembered anything past Charles arriving at the bar.

Sucking in a breath, she sat up and grabbed the pain killers she kept beside her bed. They were a lifeline on days like this.

As soon as she had swallowed the painkillers, she stood up and pulled an old, food stained hoodie over her body. She stood up, slipped her feet into her slippers and walked out of the bedroom, her feet dragging.

A yawn left her lips as she trudged towards her kitchen. She didn't notice the man sleeping on her couch as she opened the cupboard holding her mugs. The cupboard was empty, the mugs sitting in her sink.

She grabbed the first mug, the one that had 'Sexy' written in different fonts and colours, and made quick work of washing it up. It wasn't perfect when she placed it beneath the coffee machine and pressed 'Go'.

At the sound of the coffee machine, the person on the couch stirred. His eyes opened and he blinked, adjusting to the daylight shining in through the window. That was right, he'd managed to take care of her, but had forgotten things like shutting the curtains.

When he sat up and turned towards the kitchen, he watched as she jumped out of her skin. "Holy shit, Charles!" She cried, quickly placing her mug on the counter. "What're you doing here? You scared the shit out of me."

He rubbed his eyes and yawned as he stood up. "Good morning to you, too," he said as he walked towards the kitchen, stepping over dishes and takeout containers on the floor.

The couch hadn't been all too comfortable but, mostly, Charles couldn't believe that she lived like this. He couldn't believe that Henri hadn't gotten her a cleaner or somebody to help her live better than this.

"Want a coffee?" She asked as he leaned against the counter.

When Charles nodded, she quickly washed up another mug and placed it beneath the coffee machine. With her eyes half closed she pressed the required buttons and it started running, pouring coffee into the mug.

Once it was full and the machine stopped spluttering out coffee, she handed it to Charles. "Did you drive me back here last night?" She asked as she sipped from her own mug. (His mug was a giraffe, the long winding neck acting as the handle).

"Thought you might throw up in your sleep and die," he said and sipped his coffee. But, at that moment, it was far too hot and he nearly ended up spitting it put. He swallowed it down, ignoring the burn.

The party princess let out a snort. "Oh sunshine," she began as she walked past him, patting his chest. "You have no idea what you're dealing with.

She sat on the sofa and pulled her legs beneath her. Switching on the television, she flipped through channels as she sipped her coffee.

Charles couldn't help but watch her. She didn't seem like a princess, not the way she was now. Didn't look like she belonged in a palace, in a fancy dress and crown. She was just a girl, the same as anybody else.

He joined her on the sofa, sitting on the far end. "Do you remember last night, when you warned me about the state of your apartment?" He asked, and she couldn't help but look down, embarrassed. "You said 'it's not very princess like'."

She gestured to the mess around the couch. "You weren't expecting this, were you?"

Charles didn't want to admit that she was right, that he hadn't expected things to be this bad. "Why hadn't Henri gotten you a cleaner or a maid or something?" He asked, leaning back against the sofa cushions.

She shrugged her shoulders. "He tried. He tried several different times," she said, placing her mug on the coffee table in front of her. "I drove all of them away with reckless behaviour and because I was too much to deal with."

But still, Charles looked around. "So you don't even try to take care of yourself?"

Again, she shrugged her shoulders. "No point when I'm nothing more than the party princess."

She finished her coffee, stood up and placed the mug in the sink, along with the rest of them. "Can we get things nailed down?" She asked him, resting her hand against the back of the sofa. Charles didn't turn his head towards her. "Like, a schedule and shit? When we go out to dinner, events we're taking each other to, and stuff like that."

He didn't immediately recognise that she was trying to rush him out of her apartment, couldn't tell from the get go that she wanted time alone. He leaned forward, putting his half full mug on the coffee table, and turned to face her.

"Well, I can take you for dinner before my next Grand Prix. We can make it somewhat public, get in all of the papers."

A dry laugh left her lips. "Are you sure you want the party princess to drag you down to her level? Because that's what's going to happen next time we're pictured together."

Charles turned his full body towards her. "What're you saying?" He wore a frown on his face, one that didn't suit him. She realised it immediately. He looked so downtrodden when he frowned. "Do you want to break this arrangement off?"

Once again she shrugged. "Just giving you the option to get out before you end up like Frédéric Archambeau," she said.

"Who is Frédéric Archambeau?"

"Exactly."

What Did I Do In 2023?

Whatever I wanted, mostly.

As I mentioned last year, my site now has an RSS feed with basically everything I've done back to 2020, so this will mainly be going over the same stuff from that, just with added context.

In January, I finally sat down and properly realized an idea for a short story I'd had sitting around for a while: From the Sidelines, about a fantasy RPG expedition going sideways. I remain very proud of it in both concept and execution, and hope people read it.

In February, Your Turn To Die was released on Steam Early Access, receiving character profiles and some bonus mini-episodes, adding two more later in the year.

After finishing From the Sidelines, I carried that momentum to revisit my Ut0p1a story series about funny computer animals. I'd always meant to continue it - and conclude it - but hadn't been satisfied with the ideas I had for it until totally rethinking them this year. In March, I posted the remaining stories one after another: Right to Code and Left to Code. I'm very proud of these as well. Also in March, Kenshi Yonezu released LADY. (Video, interview)

In April, Uri released the Data Book of the Strange Men Series, a big collection of the writing she's done on the games in the series, with a lot of new parts as well, all translated by me.

Then in May... uh, well, let's see. In April, Capcom released the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection. I always adored the Battle Network games, and was initially excited that they finally did the thing... but by the time it came out, I was pretty disappointed by how, while you certainly couldn't call them low-effort ports, the effort didn't extend everywhere I thought it should, with the biggest offenders being the total absence of any "convenience features" except Buster Max Mode, the bad font, and the almost entirely untouched translations.

So, I ended up deciding I might as well just replay the originals, and that was a fun time (aside from the parts that were bad). Doing this, I couldn't help but notice how... turbulent the translations were, even if I'd always known they were less than ideal. I mean, the first two games just used periods for ellipses despite the tight character limits, then in BN3 they had an ellipsis character... but it's center-aligned, Japanese-style? Aside from the intro, which has normal ones? Gosh, somebody should fix that - it's simple enough to find and edit in YY-CHR. "JapanMan" is silly, too - I wonder if anybody made a patch for that? Wait, what do you mean there's just a tool to extract and insert text in all the Battle Network games including the Legacy Collection???

Thus began a journey that sort of occupied the rest of my year. First I did the BN3 Translation Revision, trying not to worry too much about cross-referencing the Japanese text unless something seemed wrong, so that I didn't spend too long on the project. Then I began to consider BN2, with its unfortunate "foreigner" text that would need some more significant reworking. I established more convenient tools for comparing with the Japanese script, and thus did a much more thorough job with it, releasing the BN2 Translation Revision in June (AKA Princess Pride Month).

Finally, after giving myself time to recover and actually finish replaying the series, I knew what I had to do to close things out. With the BN4 Translation Revision, you can finally play Battle Network 4 with a translation that isn't such a mess. Whether you'd want to is for you to decide, though if you can get over the structure, I don't think it's the worst game in the series by any means. (Oh, and in December I also updated the BN3 Revision to 1.1, doing a thorough pass with the methods I'd honed. But I think I'm pretty much good on MMBN translations now.)

Anyway, backtracking to other things that happened during my Battle Network haze... June had Kenshi Yonezu's Moongazing (video, interview), and July had Globe (video, interview, interview).

Last but not least, released in November, I translated Refind Self: The Personality Test Game, a short game from Lizardry (creator of 7 Days to End with You) with a fun concept.

Obviously I was right to have said "no promises" last year. But really, Your Turn To Die should get its final part on Steam sometime next year, maybe even early-ish in it. That's certainly the goal.

I'm also hoping to buckle down and finish one of my own games, but as usual, who knows how that'll pan out. Letting my whims carry me this year let me finally finish From the Sidelines and Ut0p1a, which was great, and it also led me down a Battle Network rabbit hole, which was... fine, but definitely for a narrower audience. I'd always like to get back to more free game translations and the like, too, but it takes effort to find things I'd want to translate. For now, I think my increasing desire to be able to let loose some of these original games I've been planning, and the stories in them, might come out on top.

i was feeling dissatisfied with the logos i'd made for my symphogear fic, so i spent a weekend reverse-engineering the font used in the english release of the mobile game. what originally began as recreating the letters used in the logo quickly evolved into making all of the letters in the alphabet, uppercase and lowercase, numbers, and all the punctuation you would conceivably need in a font that has, to my knowledge, only ever been used to spell out "SYMPHOGEAR":

it's my first time making a font from scratch, but i was pretty happy with the results! i used it to update the logos i made for my crossover fic (first draft on top, second draft with the new logo on bottom):

here's what the font looks like:

it's not an exact match for the logo but with the right skewing and squashing you can get it pretty close!

o kuku é um grande enigma pra mim 😭 ia falar que pra ele td ta bom nao tem preconceito nenhum e tbm escuta de tudo que vc colocar PORÉM acabou de me ser revelado aqui em sonho que ele por ele mesmo escutaria bastante rock nacional!!!! gente pensa comigo, ele tem uma carinha de quem adoraria pitty, skank e principalmente os clássicos, ama um titãs, um capital inicial, um legião urbana, paralamas 💭 é a CARA dele !!

pro pipe acho que diria quase o mesmo que pro matías (apesar de achar que trap/rap combina mais com o matías mesmo) então ficamos aqui com o funk!! tb curte mto um rockinho nacional (herança dos pais dele) mas no off pra ele não tem mta frescura ou mto segredo ele ouve o que tá bombando e nao eh mto de artistas mas sim de playlists ☝🏼 todas que tão tocando atualmente nos rolês que ele cola ele ta escutando, é apaixonado por um mega (principalmente se for sampleado de hit gringo anos 2000) e ta com aquariano nato no repeat desde que estourou 💭

apesar de tbm ser MUITO do funk também (sabe vários passinhos e manda sem vergonha alguma na rodinha fodase) o simón é mto do PAGODE meu Deus do céu!!!!!! agora imagina vc aqui comigo um simón td alegrinho de cerveja, te puxando pela cintura com um sorrisão mais bobo q tudo e te recitando a letra de camisa 10 da turma do pagode junto com a caixa de som já meio prejudicada que trouxeram pro churrasco entre amigos 💭💭💭💭 FALA SÉRIO MANAS este homem GRITA a energia romântico cafajeste e putífero que apenas o pagode exige e exala!!!! e ele não tem mta frescura tbm não viu? curte os mais novinhos e atuais mas pra ele nada supera os clássicos de 1990/2000/2010 do exalta, da turma do pagode, do sorriso maroto, do pixote 🛐 tbm não nega um sambinha e vê o zeca pagodinho como figura paterna

o rafa e o santi me passam vibes de que adoram um vocal feminino (os amantes de mulheres q nois gosta 🤭) então não sei mas me veio marisa monte (e tribalistas ‼️) e outras divas da mpb na cabeça!

o della corte tbm me passa mto vibes de um rockinho nacional mas vou ignorar em favor do meu headcanon favorito: della agroboy do centro-oeste que adora um sertanejo 🛐💭 pode ser um modão das antigas ou um universitário mais recente que nao interessa ele ta curtindo e cantando todas as letras junto! ama dançar agarradinho também, tem um fraco pelas de corno e sofrência (apesar de ser tão de boa e cabeça firme na vida amorosa dele q nunca nem passa por isso) e não aceita que discordem que a rainha de tudo é a marília (e ta correto! 🗣️)

o blas já temos uma noção pela playlist brazuca dele rs então eu encaixo ele quase nas mesmas categorias que o kuku e o matías: ele ouve de tudo um pouco quando ta com os amigos mas ele mesmo não é mto chegado em tudo não - conhece e curte mto rock clássico dos anos 80 por conta dos pais e cresceu ouvindo charlie brown jr, mas daí acabou conhecendo bastante rap e trap (principalmente os mais atuais - tudo culpa do matías) por conta dos amigos e hoje praticamente só ouve esses 3 sons
