@red-pearl-white-flower made a comment earlier today that really struck me: they were talking about how Mei Nianqing wanted to seal one of Hong-er's senses just to appease Jun Wu. And that struck me not only because, holy cow, you're right, but also because of what that meant for Xie Lian. When Mei Nianqing proposed sealing Hong-er's senses, what he wanted was to show Jun Wu, look, this prince, he's not like you were. He doesn't try to save everyone. He has limits! He wouldn't try to defy the heavens. He won't try to defy you.

another reason i think that xie lian felt an instant connection on the ox cart is because he and hua cheng both grew up in xianle.

there are maybe 4 people still alive that grew up in that culture. based on my own experience, you can pick up on things like accent, cadence, references, and humor that suggest a person is from the same place as you without consciously noticing it. that sense of comfort and similarity probably played into their instant chemistry.
