I am constantly and immensely grateful for the community of women in my life. Brilliant, creative, capable, supportive, funny, dynamic women. In watching them and they way they live their lives, in experiencing my own in the world, and in being someone who is honored to communicate with all of you here, and hear your stories and witness your lives? One thing is clear to me. We show up. Do our best. Give it our all. And we are, because of a system that wasn’t designed to benefit us, often made to work harder. Period. As our friends @argent said recently, “Women work, but the status quo doesn’t.” What do we mean by that? Over 2 million women have left the workforce since the start of the #pandemic. Even before #COVID-19 our economy was not built to support women —especially women of color. The data makes it clear: Women work, work, work but no the status quo doesn’t. Women take on more of the work of caring for children and the family. That data? Women spend seven more years on average performing more household work than men (SEVEN!? YEARS! TY for the info @melindafrenchgates) And according to a recent @nytimes piece, experts are saying that due to the pandemic, it will “take our women 10 years to get back” in the workplace. It’s simply not okay. So what’s the solution? There will need to be many — and we are looking at you policy makers! — but “many” also means we can get creative and each use our unique abilities to help out. Happy book birthday to The Toll by @nealschusterman! I finished it last night and WOW! What a conclusion! I think it is the best ‘third book in a series’ I’ve ever read! I COULDN’T PUT IT DOWN!! The Arc of a Scythe series has firmly cemented itself as one of my most favourite series… EVER! . To celebrate the release of The Toll, @walkerbooksya have encouraged us to choose our own Patron Historic. I could have chosen so many different people for this exercise, however I came across a quote from @melindafrenchgates this morning that spoke to me. I have been working on a secret project and it is exactly what I needed to hear! It is the biggest dream I’ve ever dreamt and it is very much about giving a safe space to voices that don’t yet have a place to shine. A space of empowerment, growth, creativity, inclusivity and wonderment! I would design my robes around a jumper I purchased last year because every time I wear it, I receive comments about how happy it makes people feel when they see it! Swipe to see! The simple right to contraception is one of the biggest themes here, Melinda is a Catholic and does not let this get in the way of her important work. 2. Child arranged marriage is discussed, and some of the stories are heartbreaking. The author approaches these tragic issues with humility and grace. I applaud the author for using her wisdom, knowledge and position to raise up the status of women from around the world. 3 Example of Musahar tribe of India. Blows you away how these rat eating girls are turning their lives as medal winners in the international arena. 4. Genital cutting of women to trade for education ...prevelant in Africa. If you invest in a girl or a woman, you’re investing in everyone else. As bill Gates says ,But to me, what is really impressive about the book is the way Melinda combines her mastery of data with her ability to tell powerful stories about individual women she has met. In an especially memorable passage about how she handles seeing people in desperate circumstances, she writes: “All of us have to let our hearts break; it’s the price of being present to someone who is suffering.” Your heart will break more than once when you read this book. But more often, you will be enlightened and inspired.
