The "Black Marauder" is a horror story of a cursed mech. Over the years urban legend has built it up into some kind of extradimensional beast, a living machine that moves of its own volition, consumes the souls of its victims and strikes fear in all that come close to it. It emerges from mist and shadows to kill efficiently and mercilessly before disappearing once more.
So I know the story says it looks like an inner sphere MAD-3R, but the way it's described as looking "Off-proportioned" and "Too smooth, almost organic-looking" makes me think it's a IIC. That and it having "Teeth", which the IIC's array of chin-lasers could be mistaken for. It also has a tendency to oneshot mechs with PPCs to the cockpit, which only Clan PPCs have the damage to do reliably. It performs unusually well in smoke/fog (advanced clan sensors perhaps?). Maybe the pirates didn't recognize what they were looking at given they lived on the opposite side of IS space from the Clan invasion front. It's also black with bits of red, the paint scheme of a certain Wolf's Dragoons "mercenary company" (read: Clan spies roaming IS space) which would explain the lack of factory markings/serial numbers. The stories mention weird behavior and unidentifiable mechanical issues so it could've been left behind since it was a liability, stripped of insignia and left on a forsaken airless asteroid in some random uninhabited system to conceal the trail. That's just my pet theory, anyway.

This one was difficult for a different reason, not painting this time but being my first time working with greenstuff and sculpting/modifying a miniature.
The paint job itself was fairly quick because of the almost uniform coloration despite the number of steps: -Primed with matte black -basecoated with Night Scales metallic black (It barely shows up, there is a faint glitter in some spots but mostly it looks like a slightly lighter black.) -Heavily drybrushed with Rough Iron, a dark rust color metallic -Lighter drybrush with Gunmetal, grayish/silver metallic. at this point I thought it was too light/shiny so I went over some panels with matte black paint, keeping away from the edges I'd drybrushed. -Mars Red in the eyeholes. White on the lasers/cockpit later covered with Red/Green/Blue speedpaint. -Blood Red speedpaint over the "monstrous" bits. It disappeared into the black, until: -Gloss varnish over the speedpaint brought the red back out again. I wanted everything to be black but still have the monster bits to stand out texturally, the gloss makes them glisten nicely. -Anti-shine matte varnish on the rest. That still looks pretty shiny to me but what can you do (Vantablack miniature paint, anyone??) -The label says MAD-BLK in the Standard Galactic Alphabet. At some point I knew how to read/write it after it featured in Minecraft enchantments, though by now I lost that and had to look it up.
The sculpting was interesting. -Green stuff is tacky and sticks to my fingers when fresh, hard to apply to the model in a careful manner, but is pretty easily workable on the model, once it's on. At some points I used metal sculpting tools almost like chopsticks to avoid touching it with my hands. I twisted a pointed tool like a little drill bit to get the eyeholes in. -Getting closer to the 1hr mark it stiffens up and becomes the opposite. Easier to apply and get off my fingers but harder to work into the shapes I want and fit in the crevices for a good hold. -The claws are superglued given they're sticking out a fair bit. Roughed up the plastic surface before applying glue for a better bond. The other greenstuff I trusted to stay on since they were molded into the surfaces pretty closely. -The blood was red ink Speedpaint mixed with good old AK water medium.
I'll have to do more modding in future, truly customize my mechs.
Last Lance of Cardinal Sins featured a Zeus, only too late did I have the idea of modding a ZEU-X with the wing-like cooling vanes. Fortunately I have a King Crab waiting for me (my favorite mech!) to make a prototype KGC-010 with. It has flush-mounted dual PPCs with spiky cooling vanes sticking out the back. Should be fun.

Death cratered into the room from above.
In a flash, the ceiling had been smashed through.
. . . In the blink of an eye.
50 Dread Barons had become 42.
8 Marines, crushed into bloody metal paste under a massive black-steel laser-core-infused drill built by the Rival Machines.
A drill that was as wide as 4 drop pods combined, carrying a black-steel box into the depths of this world that was the size of 5. Marked from top-to-bottom in Rival Glpyhs and Patterns…
Any barons that weren't crushed like tomatoes were thrown to the cave floor, dazed. Staring up at the enormous box.
Even the Power Scales and the Chief were floored by the crash-down of the box… rubbing at their visors to get the dust out of their vision.
Red: " . . . What. In. This galaxy?" Yellow: "What is that...? 'S massive!" Green: "The Barons! They were...!" Blue: "Red? Red, what-? What do we...?" Dread Baron Chief: " . . . B r o t h e r s . M Y . B R O T H E R S ! " Seeing the fate of his soldiers, the chief of the Barons began to shake with a believably unfathomable rage. Red: " . . . Control. What... what're your readin's sayin'?"
Management has been alerted. We’re awaiting orders. I’m scrambling another platoon of Marines as exfil, but the odds of them getting there before that… thing… reduces you to a fine red mist are low. I’d also recommend getting away from the Chief- you’ve heard the term seeing red? He personifies it.

**Take the Shot**
 It was unseasonably warm. Ed looked up from the strider he was stripping for parts and glanced over at his mate Iz, who was hunched over a scrapper nearby. Iz was bleeding from a cut on his cheek and there was a mark on his shoulder where a laser bolt from the machine he'd brought down had been absorbed by his leather armor. He looked tired. They were two of the oldest hunters still active in their tribe. Maybe too old. 
 “You alright, man?” he asked. Iz looked up, yanking a handful of wires out of the metal carcass as he did.
 “Fucking fine. Get the heart, we need the shards,” he muttered. Ed nodded and went back to work. 
 “There's a ruin nearby. Want to hit that too when we're done?” he asked. Truth was, he was bored of scavenging machines and had been for a while. He knew what answer he'd get, but he held out hope.
 “No. I'm not fucking dying for your stupid fucking curiosity,” Iz muttered. He pulled another clump of wires and grimaced. 
 “These damn things are getting so fucking violent we break half the valuable parts bringing them down,” he said with a sigh. Iz kept his hair shorter than most Nora, but still long enough for it to droop in his eyes. He flicked it out of his field of vision with a twitch of his head. He was a gesture that Ed never failed to find attractive. 
 “Ed, stop staring and get that heart,” Iz ordered. Ed sighed and went back to digging through the carcass. The desired part finally pulled free and was undamaged. Strider hearts were a common enough resource, but shards were shards. 
 “Here you go, you little nightmare,” he said, tossing it to Iz. Iz grunted in appreciation. 
 “Let's go home. I'm tired and hungry. And there's a rumor that a sawtooth has been seen around here,” he said. 
 “Well, fuck! Let's go after that! If it's shards we need, anything off that thing will grab us a sackful,” Ed said.
 “Oh by All-Mother, Ed!” Iz groaned. “My spear is broken and I'm exhausted. Your bow won't be enough to bring down something that big by yourself.”
 As he spoke, a deep growl came from the trees. 
 “We might have to find out,” Ed whispered. The foliage rustled and rumbled. 
 “I didn't see any watchers or any other machines around. What the fuck is it doing here if not guarding?” Iz hissed. Ed darted past him and yanked him into a clump of red grass. It grew taller than most other grass and the swaying red tips seemed to better hide them from machines. He was hoping it hid them well enough to survive now. The treeline swayed and moved once more and the machine stepped into the clearing. 
 It was huge even by sawtooth standards.
 It was heavy up front and lean in the back. Huge fangs sprouted from its mouth and long metal claws tipped its feet. In its chest, a canister of blaze glowed dully. 
 “If I can hit that blaze canister, it'll ignite and explode. If it doesn't kill it, it should give us time to run,” Ed whispered. 
 “Oh, fuck no. You're a good shot, but you're not like Rost or Aloy,” Iz growled. Ed grimaced at the mention of his two lost friends. Iz merely glared back. 
 “I can do it, Iz,” he insisted. Iz sighed. 
 “Well, I suppose how we die won't matter much. Take it,” he said. Ed ignited a blaze arrow and drew the string back to his cheek. He breathed out, steadied his arm, and waited. The sawtooth raised its head, scanning the area. The canister in its chest glinted. 
 Ed let the arrow fly.
 There was a sharp crack as the arrow struck the canister. The machine roared. Iz began stumbling back, grabbing the back of Ed's leathers as he went. There was a sudden second of utter silence.
 The canister exploded.
 “Mother's mountain!” Iz swore as the blast knocked them both over. Ed sat up, rolling off of Iz. 
 The sawtooth wasn't dead!
 The huge machine was staggered and severely injured, but still alive and moving. The red light of its lens fell on the two hunters.
 “Run! Run, Iz, run!” Ed shouted. He sprang to his feet and hauled Iz up. Iz was still staring at the burning machine before them. Finally, Iz's brain caught up as the sawtooth let out a blood-curdling growl and charged. Iz darted to the side and took off after Ed.
 Ed sprinted down the hill, long legs stretched like a strider. A glance back and he realized he had left Iz behind. Iz was a good hand and a half shorter and while he was quick in a fight, he was no runner. Ed pulled up short to run back to him. The sawtooth gained ground, practically snapping at Iz's heels.
 “What the fuck are you doing? Go! Go!” Iz shouted at him. Ed fired another arrow. The sawtooth took it with a mechanical growl, but kept running. As Iz passed him at last, Ed whirled and looped an arm through Iz's, dragging him along. 
 “Go, Ed, go!” Iz cried. Ed could hear the sawtooth, frighteningly near, heard the servos and gears whine within. 
 Suddenly, Iz was jerked from under his arm with a shriek. Ed stopped short, nearly hard enough to cost him his balance. The sawtooth had swiped Iz's legs out from under him and now Iz lay dazed in the grass nearby. Ed fired a sharp-shot arrow almost without thinking. It struck the machine in the shoulder.
 “Come on!” Ed screamed at it. Finally, the sawtooth turned to look at him. Iz was groaning in pain, his left leg bloody and bent at a crazy angle. Fear surged through Ed. 
 “I'm right here! Come at me! I'll but the next one through your lens!” Ed bellowed. The sawtooth growled and charged. Ed loosed another arrow as of bore down on him. 
 This is how it ends for us. Sent to the All-Mother together. My fault, of course.
 He braced for the jaws to crush his chest.
 The impact never came. 
 There was a thud as the dead sawtooth hit the ground a mere foot away from Ed's feet. As promised, the last arrow had gone through the left lens. It had been enough to kill it. Ed sagged with relief, before heading over to Iz. 
 Iz was crying in pain as he approached, curled on his side. 
 “Ed, you have to go. Go home,” Iz groaned. 
 “Nope. You know I can't do that. You know I'll never find anyone who can tolerate me enough to be my mate again. So can't lose you!” Ed replied. He checked the leg. It had been a glancing blow, which was the only reason it was still attached. A claw had struck him just below the knee, snapping the bone and shredding the surrounding muscle.  Ed swallowed. It was unlikely Iz would survive this, but he would be damned if he wouldn't do everything he could to save him. 
 “Come on, let's get you moving,” he said. Iz whimpered as Ed lifted him. They had known each other since they were children, mated for nearly twenty years now. Ed had never heard that kind of sound out of Iz. 
 “Come on, Izzy, we can make it,” Ed cooed. Iz growled at the affectionate nickname. Ed grunted under Iz's weight, but lifted him to carry over his shoulder. Iz was small, but solid as a rock. It was a long way home. 
 “Ed, just… you can't carry me all the way home like this,” Iz groaned. 
 “Yeah? Since when have I ever let you tell me what to do?” Ed murmured. We just have to hope there are no machines, roaming bands of Carja, or bandit raiders on the way. 
 “Just leave me somewhere, Ed. You can come back for me,” Iz was still protesting. 
 “No, man, unless you want to spend the night in that ruin I mentioned, there's nowhere safe to leave you.”
 One step. And another. And another. Ed began counting steps. He refused to leave Iz, but he was so heavy…
 “Ed, please…” Iz murmured. His voice was growing quiet. Ed could feel the blood flowing steadily over his back. No. No. Iz will be fine. Pissed off and in bad shape, but he'd be fine!
 “We are going home. Together. Fuck what you think!” Ed snapped, half at himself. 
 His only thoughts were to get home. He knew the direction he was going in. But he'd stopped concentrating on the specifics. 
 He didn't notice the unsteady ground until it was already giving way beneath his feet. 
 Ed registered Iz crying out and then they were falling. 
 He hit the ground first, Iz landing on top of him, thankfully. He had enough time to realize they'd fallen into the very ruin he'd wanted to explore before he lost consciousness.

Lancer: Hostile Forces
Here are 3 unrelated factions (each consisting of 3 units) for the mecha/pliot table-top role playing game Lancer:
1. Voidborn Oppressors
They used to be humble spaceship salvagers during the war between worlds. Once the war was over, they found themselves to have more military assets than the surviving planet-bound nations. And so they've leveraged their power to regulate all trade and politics across the entire solar system. Anyone who shows defiance to their authority will be crushed with disproportionate force.
Demolisher + Pirate = Wreck Mistress
During the war, arguments over salvage rights were typically resolved in favor of whoever had a Wreck Mistress. It is an intimidating machine traditionally piloted by a cold woman. It incorporates the most terrifying weapons-tech from the war: Slaver Signal, Demolition Hammer, Coreworm Rockets, Seismic Destroyer. These mechs are passed down from mother to favored daughter. Wreck Mistresses were used during the subjugation of planetary nations to butcher both mechs and their pilots in grisly spectacle.
Scourer + Commander = Las-Boss
Using a mecha-scaled laser cutter to disassemble military cruisers requires a steady hand and a keen mind. One miscalculation or twitch of the controls could result in a small nuke going off. During the war there was always demand for a "lascut specialist" for the previously stated reasons. Those who survived long enough in the profession would earn legions of followers and the best berths in any station. These wartime scrap-stars are now looking for opportunities to prove they are still just as hot as their instruments, prior to cooling. They may be accompanied by a Squad or a couple of Assault Grunts serving as groupie-bodyguards. A Las-boss must have the Melt optional system and the Military Discipline trait.
Assassin + Spacer = Boarder
The Boarder MK.I was a standardized powered exoskeleton designed for high mobility and dirty close quarters combat. It's pilots would typically use Thumper Grenades to disable targets, Leap to close the gap, and a Heated Blade to finish them off. The Mk. II was designed for combat on planet surfaces and operating alongside Wreck Mistresses. This new version of the Boarder was equipped with a Gravity Rifle (much needed ranged firepower) and Kai Bioplating (maintaining it's mobility within a gravity well). The MK. III addresses the fact that Boarders were being destroyed by being out-ranged or out-gunned, and so it features a two-fold solution. The Assassin's Mark would give the Boarder some protection from a single attacker. And a Cloud Projector would give it the ability to dodge fire from multiple attackers. During protests against the Voidborn, effigies of Boarders are set on fire and paraded around.
2. Radiovore Colony
These organisms are like a cross between bombardier beetles and nudibranchs, scaled to megafauna sizes. Radiovores naturally produce hyper-reactive chemical substances that they use for a variety of purposes. They are able to do this because they feed on rare metals and radioactive materials which gives them the necessary mutations. Their diet puts them at odds with human mining colonies pursuing the same resources. Both the Nester and the Suitor have the Regenerator and Living Chassis traits from the Exotic template.
Monstrosity = Progeny
Casually classified as being old enough to leave their nest but not mutated yet. They have claws, a corrosive bite, and acid spittle attacks. Progeny use hit and run tactics on prey, while threats are safely melted from a distance. There doesn't seem to be a limit to how old a Progeny can get, ancient ones gain the Regenerator trait.
Pyro + Exotic = Nester
When a Progeny finds high quantities of mutation-inducing materials in a defensible nest, it will become a bloated Nester. It's acid spitting gland becomes a shorter range flamethrower. They use an ability similar to the FIREBREAK Shield to protect their eggs and Progeny. After mating with a Suitor, the nester will start to lay eggs. Radiovore nests filled with eggs generate so much heat they are practically kilns. Nesters have to have burn immunity and the ability to disperse heat in order to survive. As they get near the end of their lives, an old Nester will form a hardened shell (siege armor) over their body.
Seeder + Exotic = Suitor
Progeny that have left their nests, have found low quantities of radioactive material but little shelter, turn into Suitors. These Radiovores spend their time building biomechanical bombs with different kinds of yields and payloads for multiple purposes. At first their explosives are used for the creation of nests and exploratory mining operations. Once a Progeny has taken over a nest and become a Nester, the Suitor's bombs are then used in a courting ritual. The Nester will only mate with a Suitor who presents bombs that are highest-yield/least-stable. To minimize damage, Nesters will instinctively drive suitors far away from the nest. The Suitor has to make and transport their explosives from these remote locations. They may test out delivery routes to a nest with Stun, Sealant, or Shock Mines first before upgrading to the Explosive type. Wait long enough and an exterminator can follow a Suitor back to their nest, but actually tracking it (even in low flying aircraft) can be incredibly risky.
3. First Strike Team
Long range nuclear missiles, "Super-Hacker" NHPs, TBK bioweapon suites. All these human-made horrors need time to arm, aim, and launch. First Strike Teams can neutralize these threats to national security within that prep phase, if deployed accurately and correctly. Because of that big if, FSTs are maintained and commanded by covert intelligence bureaus, to ensure an uninterrupted flow of reliable target data. These teams are subject to less scrutiny than the superweapons they hunt and are only beholden to a bureau's director. Because of this, FSTs are viewed with suspicion by everyone who knows about them. When deployed to a target location, an FST is a frantic collective because they know they've only got minutes to save their world.
Mirage + Ship = Blink-Boat
The purpose of this ship is to get a Ground Team as close as possible to their targets. Blink-boats can teleport from their launch pad to anywhere within a half-lightyear but after that they can only make shorter jumps. That's when their secondary stealth functions are used, to protect itself and passengers from any immediate attacks by defensive. Given how delicate and experimental they are, Blink-boats do not carry any conventional weapons that can backfire on itself. There has been some speculation about what might happen if a blink-boat's launch-pad jump was sabotaged.
Squad = Ground Team
GTs will not leave their blink-boat until they are exactly where they should be. Once deployed, they will overwhelm hostile security with superior numbers and firepower. They are given all kinds of equipment and training depending on which target they are supposed to disable. The gear can range from breaching charges and system hacking tools to 3D maneuvering gear and heavy body armor.
Ace + RPV = Escorters
Durability, mobility, and firepower, these are the three virtues of the Escorter remote piloted vehicle. They deploy and spread out from the underbelly of the Blink-Boat after it has arrived in a target location. These robots will take the hits (which they will occasionally dodge thanks to Barrel Roll) that the rest of the FST cannot. This miraculous semi-autonomous weapon design comes at a horrible cost: Escorters are absurdly vulnerable to electronic warfare. However if one of them was hacked so thoroughly that it fired on the rest of the FST, the blink-boat's e-warfare suite would be able to keep the rest of the team safe.
