i am SO sorry i am like a week and a half late to this, please forgive me 🥺lets talk about eddie

i think he gets really good at being bad. not... bad per say, but he gets really good at things like sneaking out and standing up to sonia. after the hospital incident, it’s like he’s tugged at a loose thread on his shirt and it’s starting to unravel, you know? they say bravery is addicting...

after he gets home from the hospital he bikes to the grocery store and picks up a carton of peanut butter. when he gets home, he pops the lid of his epipen and shoves a giant spoonful of jif brand into his mouth and squeezes his eyes closed while he chewed and waited for his throat to close up. but... it didn’t. also, peanut butter is way slimier than he’d imagined. 

eddie memorized the way the stairs creaked. if he stepped to close to the banister on the fifth and seventh step, he’d wake his mom. after being caught once, eddie started practicing during the day; sonia had only barely accepted the shaky i’m thirsty excuse he’d given, bathrobe just barely covering his windbreaker. now, he could get downstairs and out the back door in under thirty seconds with professional ease and barely the sound of a mouse’s yawn.

bev’s always the first to jump into the quarry, until she isn’t. richie and eddie are standing at the edge arguing about which of them was the real winner of loogie when stan said, scraping dirt out from under his nail, the real winner would jump off right now. eddie turned, gave himself a few steps, and then launched himself into the water before bev had even tugged off her dress.

eddie learns to sneak out so he can hang out with the losers after dark, of course. that’s what he tells himself, because it’s true - and it is. the thing is, the more and more he successfully sneaks out, the more and more it becomes just him and richie and bill, roaming the barrens for dead bodies (not funny richie) or maybe the cure to eddie’s virginity (beep BEEP richie). and then, after awhile, it’s just eddie and richie most of the time. 

(if you ask ben, or bev, or mike, or stan, or the entire town of derry, maybe, that’s how it always is.)

and then, eddie learns a lot of things really fast. peanut butter is slimy (and he’s not allergic), there’s twelve steps on his staircase and all but one creak somewhere, and... he might be a little in love with richie. probably not, though - it’s just richie, right? richie’s eyes have always been this green, his laugh has always been this high-pitched, and his smile has always made eddie’s hand itch for his inhaler. 

fuck. shit. 

eddie quits being brave cold turkey. it feels like a logical decision.

eddie’s heart doesn’t get on board though, you know? it still wraps its hands around his rib cage and rattles them like cell bars, demanding to pop out of his chest at any moment. one time, eddie watched richie wipe spaghetti sauce off his chin with the back of his hand - and then lick it off the back of his hand. eddie was fully prepared to vomit, but also that familiar rattle rattle clunked behind his lungs. it’s called nuance

so maybe eddie’s in love with richie. it’s fine. it’s cool. maybe one day he’ll remember how to be brave; maybe one day richie and him will be standing at the top of the quarry at midnight, each of them trying to hock a bigger loogie, and after they both wipe the spit from their mouths and richie’s stopped laughing about eddie’s hitting the rock instead of the water, they’ll look at each other. maybe then eddie will tell him. 

(he will. it just takes awhile. richie never sees it coming, but the rest of the losers have nearly lost their patience.)

so yeah i guess this is a really roundabout way to say eddie figures out he really likes peanut butter, despite the way it sticks to the roof of his mouth. he does, however, like the feeling of richie’s hand in his way, way more.

it’s in the way he looks back at you to see if you’re laughing at one of his jokes. his mouth is moving in reply to someone else, but his eyes are on you as you say, “really funny, spaghetti”. his smile widens and he turns back around, almost walking into bev. 

it’s in the way he grabs your glasses and cleans them with a cleaning rag he keeps in his pocket. “do you keep that just for me?” you ask, overly batting your eyelashes and his cheeks lightly flush as he gently hands them back to you and mutters, “they’re your glasses, learn to clean them”. which. isn’t a yes or no. but you know what it means.

it’s in the way he dismisses a suggestion for lunch because he knows you don’t like the food. it’s quick and everyone moves on, but you catch it and your heart thumps just ever so slightly. later, when everyone is eating lunch, he’s in the bathroom when the waiter comes by for everyone’s order so you order a strawberry lemonade for him and a classic lemonade for you. you know it’s his favorite drink. you know each other like that.

it’s in the way he keeps all of the rocks you’ve given him over the years. you give him a rock if you find it cool or weird, and it’s never a Big Thing. you hand him the rock and he takes it and places it in his pocket. you assume he washes them after. but he has a shelf in his room that’s mostly taken up with rocks from the years of friendship. neither of you say anything about it. 

it’s in the way that he lightly jogs after the car as you leave Derry. everyone that’s left waves with watery eyes as your car pulls away. but not him. he follows your car to the end of the block, waving as he does so. he shouts a goodbye as you turn a corner, watching him grow smaller in the rear window until he’s gone completely. 

it’s in the way his face is one of panic when he sees you again for the first time in nearly three decades. there’s recognition there, and your stomach flips over and your heart slams in your chest and you decide to drink as much and as soon as you can. he doesn’t take his eyes off of you for the majority of the night, while you avoid looking at him. at one point you arm wrestle and you want to put all your effort into it just to keep feeling his hand in yours. 

it’s in the way his eyes are so trained on you as you tell him he’s brave. nobody has gotten through to him. but here you two are, and the words are easy and “you’re braver than you think” is a phrase that you can see hits him. and you know he doesn’t fully believe it just yet. but he trusts you. for as loud as you are, for as dirty as your insults are, you’re who he trusts most. 

it’s in the way your name is his exclamation as he’s pierced through his chest. he’s being thrown like a ragdoll and all you can think is “eddie” and all he said was “richie” and it means something, but neither of you have put it together. he said your name as if you could save him or make this all a bad dream. and you try to. you do what you remember seeing people do on tv or in movies. but it isn’t enough. and you put it together as you bring his stuff to his wife and she mentions that you’re the comedian he always watched. 

it’s love. it’s in the way he smiled at you, the way he would fire comebacks at you, the way he always squeezed into that hammock with you. it’s in the way the words never left your lips. it’s in the way he’ll never hear them. but it’s there.

🎵👨‍🎓PROG METAL👩‍🎓🎵 Artist: Royal Orphan Title: Royal Orphan EP Genre: Progressive Power Metal Release Date: 24th April 2018 Label: Self-released As a devoted reader (if there are some) you should know by now that I tend to dig good Prog stuff, ROYAL ORPHAN for example is such a case. ROYAL ORPHAN was formed in 2017 by Brendan Kelly and Joey Migz. The two-piece band from Long Island, New York play old-school Progressive Power Metal like old-school QUEENSRYCHE or ENCHANT. Let’s check their press text: “The history of ROYAL ORPHAN can be traced back to 1989 when guitarist / vocalist / bass player Brendan Kelly met with drummer Joey Migz as freshmen in high school. The two formed a lifelong friendship and played together in various incarnations of the project which eventually became ROYAL ORPHAN. Their sound became refined over time, rich with influences that span decades and genres into their own style which focuses on a singer / songwriter approach to Traditional Heavy Metal. ROYAL ORPHAN exists primarily as a studio project, joined by bass player Dan Kelleher to complete them as a trio for select live gigs. Welcome to the future of the old school!” First thing that comes to mind is: this is a bit odd but in a nice way, the vocal arrangement does not always match the guitar leads but I get the feeling these guys do it intentional and yet it works, there are moments the guitars escalate (‘In Requiem’) or when Brendan’s vocals go soft and balladesque (‘Fondest Wish’). The whole narrative is quite proggy from start to finish, melodies interwoven in other melodies broken up by transitions and powerful drums and of course riffs, lots of riffs! This is a great tale told by two skilled musicians and I am thrilled to hear what comes next for ROYAL ORPHAN.
