Over the course of 1989 and 1990, Columbia Games released what I can only call a seven-volume series of zines that expanded on the magic system first presented in the HarnMaster rules. This organized the use of magic into six elemental schools (air, fire, earth, water, metal and spirit) which correspond to a variety of metaphysically important essences — for example, Odivshe embodies water, but also slowness, darkness, cold and ice. These schools are arranged in a wheel, which symbolizes harmony and provides a framework for progression — the mage must attune to the other schools, a task that proves trickier as they progress further around the circle (I think there is a good chance this arrangement inspired the schools of magic in 2E D&D). Supplementing the specialized spells of each school are a set of neutral spells available to all casters. Further, especially learned mages can transcend the limitation of the circle, becoming Gray Mages, a rare and powerful occurrence.

HarnMaster: Magic (1997) collects all that earlier material into one set of loose leaf pages (heavy stock, full color, droooool) and makes everything delightfully modular. Even in the zine form, I liked the Harn magic system and found it surprisingly usable, but here even more so, thanks the inclusion of the humble check box. Basically, every mechanic is accompanied by one, and if the GM wants to use it, they check it off. Unchecked boxes are ignored and if whole pages are unchecked, they can simply be removed from the rules entirely. I haven’t given a close look to the binder version of HarnMaster 3E (1996), so I don’t know if this is a something the entire ruleset employs, but it strikes me as a very clever and usable way to present a system that can scale to the desired complexity of the players.

The downside of the magic system is that while the spells are novel, interesting and useful, they are all named using in-world logic. I think Dream of Galega (which evokes a powerful healing coma) is a more interesting and evocative name than “Heal,” but on a mechanical level I prefer the latter as I know what it does without having to memorize or refer to the text. Boring though that may be. But that kind of balance between the fiction and utility is a challenge something like Harn is always going to face.

Foundation pieces match default foundations/decks which are slightly larger than a 1x1 tile space. They will overlap slightly – so depending on your design, you may want to shift things around with cheats.

Some items are asymmetrical/oversized so they’ll fit better with others in the set and give the paths a bit of a “distressed” look.

All Tomorrow’s: Vanga Vangog’s Processor and Asteromorph’s HC’s

The grand finale of this saga of Vanga’s posthumans, and this one is on one of the saddest stories among the posthumans, the Mantelopes! In canon they had been born in bodies that made them unable to meaningfully interact in the world inspite of their sapience, and this would disappear quickly in a few thousand years as their songs of sorrow turn into regular mating songs and bellows.

Of course, that had not happen in Vanga’s timeline. Instead, the Asteromorph’s took interests on these posthumans due to the realization of their high intellect. This process, at first merely one of master and servant, would become a symbiotic one for both parties, with the Processors acting as the Asteromorph’s brains and memory-keepers, and the Asteromorphs the Processors hands and (Relative) brawn.

You can do a surprising amount with just a brain, and the Processor’s are the penultimate conclusion of that question, their relationship with the Asteromorphs making their empire far more technologically advanced and powerful than in canon, ironic considering the Asteromorph’s themselves wouldn’t become bigger brained.

-Their curious minds and natures made Processor’s extremely excited and interested on learning new ideas and things, to the point that they and the Asteromorph’s would make earlier contact with the Second Empire in this timeline, learning about all of their cultures and sharing some of their technology and ideas. This also had the benefit of stopping the Gravital’s from killing everyone.

-They kept their ancestral traditions of singing songs, their laryx (Voice box) being the only thing other than their brain to grow in size. Only instead of singing exclusively sorrowful songs, they instead sung songs of hope, rage, and so many other different emotions, including those only they can feel. Their laryx were so developed that they could mimic a ton of different sounds we couldn’t, including metal guitars, chainsaws, plane jet engines, and stuff that is beyond our hearing range.

-Most Processors are born offworld in the zero-gravity habitats of their Asteromorph Symbiotes, though there is still a very sizable trillions of them living in their home-Star system. This birthplace is effectively their version of Mecca, as almost every Processor visits once to several times during their lifetime. (With help from Asteromorph’s of course.)

-The Asteromorph’s are much less reclusive than in canon, and in fact a sizable amount of the population are now living in space habitats or even low-gravity worlds of other posthuman species. The highest populations of them live alongside the Modular People, Stickmen, Pterosapien’s, and the Satyriac’s .(Even they need to cut loose and party!)

-The Asteromorph’s knowledge of their ancient history, alongside the Processor’s general intelligence and assistance from the Second Empire, allowed them to find their ancestral homeworld earth far earlier. No one would inhabit the planet however, instead deciding to seed the almost deserted planet with new life from each of their worlds and millions of years later, when the sun threatens to blow up, they safely move earth into a new star system, allowing the introduced, establish and possibly sapient life to flourish.

-The Asteromorph’s and Processor’s of later times treat eachother like friends or even siblings, with an eachother being paired so long as they get along very well.

-After reaching connecting eachother’s consciousness’s, the Processor’s would offer their Asteromorph and other posthuman brethren the ability to do so as well, with them being able to agree or decline however they see fit.

-Once finding the Qu, this Posthuman empire would not horrifically mutate or kill every last one of them, instead deciding to strip them of all of their biotechnology, take down their leadership, and having them live alongside as equals….. the posthuman’s unwilling to stoop down to their abusers level.

-Like in canon, they would all disappear from this galaxy, but instead of it being a relatively ambiguous fate, the Author’s species would discover what had truly happened to humanity……… in that they had reached apotheosis and have left this universe altogether, instead deciding to seed new universe and life, so that they may love today, and seize all tomorrows.

**Working for the Traverse Town Moogles Headcanons**

-You first encounter the Moogles of the Synthesis Shop not long after your arrival to Traverse Town. While looking for available work, you’re directed to an odd little workshop located just above the First District Accessory Shop with only a simple “Good luck,” to give any indication of what awaits you. Not the most reassuring remark, but how bad can it be?

-You receive your answer the moment you arrive at the workshop when a loud bang shakes the ground beneath your feet. From within the building you can hear the muffled bickering of two high-pitched voices. (Maybe you should come back later, part of you wonders, but you already came all this way…)

-Inside, the cluttered workshop is filled with a pungent smoke that makes your eyes water. Two little winged creatures with red pompoms sprouting from their heads are deep in a heated argument in front of a crackling forge. (“I told you, kupo! TWO fire crystals! Just. TWO.”) Their argument is soon forgotten, however, when the two Moogles see you standing there. “Our new apprentice, kupo!” one of them says in excitement. “And they have thumbs!” the other adds.

-The Moogles are quick to put you to work, but it’s duties of little consequence at first. Sometimes it’s sending you to get them food from the café down the street or having you run deliveries to Squall—ahem, Leon—and his group. Other times they have you move around heavy boxes or transcribe notes as they discuss recipes. You ask for a chance to use the forge, but the Moogles are reluctant to let a newcomer handle such important equipment.

-After a week of asking for a chance to prove yourself, they eventually relent and allow you to work on an order. Your first job is simple, just setting magical crystals into a protective chain. It takes a few attempts and the metal gets a little scuffed in the process, but to your delight the Moogles deem it passable and put it on display to sell in the shop downstairs. Even they seem to be surprised at how well you did with your first creation!

-(A spiky-haired boy buys it the next day before leaving on a ship with a knight and a wizard to travel the worlds. Unbeknownst to you, it saves him during a particularly difficult fight against a massive Heartless.)

-After seeing your potential, the Moogles take a more active role in teaching you the skills of the craft. You’re still not allowed to touch the forge, but they have you put the finishing polish on various accessories and brew consumable medicines now that you’ve proven yourself a capable synthesis artist! (Sometimes it feels like you’re single-handedly keeping the Item Shop stocked with all the Potions and Ethers they have you make.)

-That spiky-haired boy and his companions visit the shop several times over the following months, turning in materials they’ve collected from their battles. They become familiar faces in the shop and often bring you the materials need for your orders. You listen to the stories of their adventure and the boy’s mysterious “Keyblade” while you work, and one day the weapon’s modular keychains sparks an idea.

-You work on the design in secret between all of your order fulfillments. After several weeks you eventually finish your recipe blueprint and show it to the Moogles. For once they fall quiet as they look over your diagrams and measurements and even notes on material procurement. You’re not sure what they’re thinking until they set your blueprint down.

-“A keychain packed with this much power? I’ve never seen anything like it, kupo,” they say before handing you a pair of protective goggles and heat-proof gloves and pointing to the forge. “Let’s see if you can bring it to life, kupo.”

-You spend hours toiling away in the workshop, using the materials you have on hand to build what you hope is an acceptable prototype. It’s only an example piece because such exotic materials are incredibly difficult to source and “Orichalcum doesn’t grow on trees, kupo!” But still you can’t waste this opportunity to use the synthesis forge.

-Despite your efforts though, the keychain doesn’t come out quite right. The substitute base metals warp under the immense power of the inserted gemstones, and the energy within can’t flow without the necessary Mystery Goo to channel the trinket’s magic. As you show your Moogle teachers the results of your effort and explain to them what went wrong, you can’t help but feel disappointed.

-But to your surprise the Moogles nod their heads in approval. This assignment was to test your skills in the art of synthesis, and they clearly see the potential in your drive and passion. The knowledge you show about the prototype’s weak points proves that you are a true synthesis expert. New Minis Case

I got a miniatures case (Orca size) from Crystal Forge. It was expensive, but I really wanted a nice way to transport and display them. The cases are modular too, so if I paint any more minis, I can add another story to my display.

I wanted to use magnets to hold my minis but didn't want to attach magnets directly to the bottoms in case I need to put them on a monitor being used as a gameboard. I read that magnets like that can screw those up. The solution was to buy these adhesive discs and put those on the bottoms of the miniatures. Then I got super strong neodymium magnets to hold the minis to the bottom of the box. I used pieces of cardstock held by tiny magnets to protect the bottom panel from scuffing.

I like the strong hold of the magnets, but they sometimes snap together if too close. They're difficult to pry apart. Also, I can't rest the box on metal since it yanks the magnets to itself.

Music tech startup closing doors due to low investor, public interest in flagship product

Earlier this week, the CEO of AbleSound Acoustics sent out notice that the company would be closing its doors, citing lack of initial investment and poor first impressions of their flagship product, the Tondeker modular guitar.

"While disheartening, we must face the reality of music production in the current day and age. The DAW has its place in the studio, as do those who are serious about recording their own performances. We were searching for that weird combination of live performer, disc jockey, and audio technician, but ended up missing the mark for all three. I'm still proud of my team and the strides that they were able to make in the name of music production, but the world has chosen to head in a different direction."

The CEO continued, citing AI-assisted music generation as one of the many reasons behind the lukewarm audience reception. Critics and reviewers provided a multitude of additional reasons for the Tondeker's failure to launch.

The guitar was lambasted for its appearance among the public, with one such post on social media decrying it as "an ugly metal box that has no right to call itself a guitar". While those willing to give it a chance found it easy to use, they noted that they also had difficulty understanding the niche it was meant for.

"Not every performance needs to be recorded, and not every composition needs to be performed. I play my actual guitar and compose on my tablet. I don't need to tape the two together!"

In spite of its shortcomings, the Tondeker is still technically impressive. It is lauded for its hard-light integration, a first for the emerging technology. However, even there it was not free from criticism, as the idea of interfacing hard-light with music led to safety concerns among testers.

"Take away all the extra doodads, and this thing is nothing more than a fancy theremin. It's fun to mess around with, but the novelty wears off quickly."

AbleSound Acoustics will cease operations in June. The company's employees are hopeful that they will be able to continue collaborating and innovate in a different field that is better suited to their strengths.

Investors speculate that the technological uniqueness of the Tondeker combined with the limited nature of its manufacturing run will lead to both the guitar and its modules being highly sought-after by collectors and enthusiasts.

**Some debug-related items float slightly when placed on Allshelf 001 or 002 – this is something I’ve experienced when cloning BuggyBooz shelves - it’s not terribly noticeable from most angles. If it bothers you, close the gap by shifting another object underneath.

***The jewel cases have 6 slots. This may be awkward for the smaller case but that’s on purpose - to make moving several clutter items at once easier. In my opinion, the larger one looks better when paired with a shelf.

3) With “move objects” ON and “snap objects to grid” set to FALSE, shift/rotate the shelf into place as needed. As you combine different objects, some will look best when they’re all facing the same direction (i.e., the green arrows are pointing in the same direction) and others might not – this depends on what items you’re using. You can shift/combine the Fjord Single Item Displays with select objects to add neon light accents to your displays.

You’ll need “move objects on/off” and “snap objects to grid true/false” cheats to make some combinations work. You may also need fences, OMSPs, or other objects to keep sims from walking through parts of the display.

4) Use the Tile Blocker as needed (especially if you play with Object Freedom by Fway, 2023). All objects have 1-tile footprints – but some cover more space than a single tile. The Tile Blocker is included in this set to help you cover those unused tiles and keep sims from walkin’ where they shouldn’t be walkin (learned this the hard way!).
