You shove the glee curving your lips behind the ceramic of your mug.

Toji throws you a horribly incensed glare from where he's slouched on the stair. "Ya find this shit funny, eh? I can still kill ya if I wanna. These injuries don't mean anything— 'm tellin' ya."

The sight twists your heart in a way, pretty weird but not unpleasant, you decide.

A hazy yet sharp eye blinking open to watch you, Toji grumbles, "Was attacked by several men some time back on my way to the grounds... of course, I beat them up to a pulp so much, not even their family can tell them apart now; but everything happened so out of the blue—"

"You don't need to explain anything anymore. I understand where the sudden knife attack came from," you cut him off gently, keeping your cup on the ground beside and moving to rub a soothing thumb on an awfully deep scar on the underside of his palm. The muscles beneath your ministrations tense a little, before relaxing a smidgen— you hear a quiet huff of a laugh from the man next to you.

You drag your eyes away from the scars on his hands to that on his lip before lifting them to meet his deep, dark gaze. A smirking glint stays there to greet your inquiring gaze.

Toji asks, "Aren't ya scared of being alone with someone rumoured to have killed half of the Zenin clan, eh, girl? People say the man in front of you once attempted to finish off that blue-eyed brat too once... Did ya not know that?"

You do. The thing is, you do.

You do know each and every one of those rumors. Silly or not. Weird or not. Being the most popular baker in the royal kingdom has made you the unwilling listener to these rumours and so many, many more.

Also, it's for the best if I don't interfere in others' business, y'know? I've a not-very-tiny one of my own to manage, which is no easy feat, if I must admit— but, yeah. No matter what your reputation is, I don't really mind you here. You've the signs of being a nice company."

An oddly piercing gaze is the only respone your lengthy reply receives— or so you think before Toji cracks a barely-there smile at you, rising from his seat and extending a hand towards you.

It's not the etiquette, some part of your mind tsks. You shut it down in less than an instant. Etiquettes are shit stuff meant for those of noble blood. You and Toji aren't so— at least, not this very second in the soft light of the day, breaking through the cloak of the yesternight— those etiquettes can be easily forgotten by you two. For now.

Forever as well. Perhaps.

You too rise, placing your palm in his outstretched one. And shoot a wide smile when he squeezes your hand and queries, "Ya sure won't mind making an extra cup of coffee for every morning from now on, yeah?"

Enjoying the pitter-patter in the middle of your chest, you shake your head, chuckling. "Heavens, no. If anything, I'll be the happiest to drag another person into my coffee-worshipping cult."

Especially if that someone is as alluring as the one before you— with a crooked grin, a tad bloody and very much feral– but you decide not to mention it– choosing to keep it close to your heart till the time Toji too grows nearer to your heart.

Ryuji hisses as he flexes his fingers, his knuckles crinkling like paper. He watches as the skin on his knuckles split further apart each time he makes a fist and reopens the wounds. Underneath the dried and fresh blood, he can see the dark purple bruises forming. That was dumb, he tells himself. He lets his hand fall between his legs and leans his head against the wall, breathing deeply. He feels something cold press against his cheek, and his body jerks in surprise.

“Sorry,” a voice says, and Ryuji looks up, blinking in surprise when he sees Ishida.




“I thought you could use a drink,” the man says, holding out the canteen.




Ryuji quirks an eyebrow.




“It’s water,” Ishida huffs, putting the canteen in the archer’s hands. “Though you could probably use something stronger.”




“I’m fine,” Ryuji mumbles, taking a swig of the water.




“Of course you are.” Ishida sighs, leaning against the wall.




Ryuji takes another drink from the canteen. Ignoring the sweet smell of Ishida’s perfume that fills his nose every time the wind blows. He flexes his hand again as a distraction, but he must have left it still for too long. The skin pulls apart, the wounds reopening, and Ryuji flinches, clamping his eyes shut. When he opens them, Ishida’s kneeling in front of him, and he nearly drops the canteen.




“What are you…?”




Ishida holds out his hands. “Let me see,” he says.




Ryuji hesitates, his fingers twitching. He sets the canteen down next to him and shakes his head. “I’m fine,” he says again.




Ishida sighs, “So stubborn. Will you just” he reaches for Ryuji’s hand, but Ryuji pulls it back.




There’s a flash of hurt in Ishida’s eyes and Ryuji feels something tighten in his stomach. Ishida stays where he is, hand still outstretched for Ryuji’s. Slowly, Ryuji moves his hand closer, allowing Ishida to take it in his. Ishida’s fingers are smooth and soft, like feathers compared to the rough callouses on his. Part of him wants to pull his hand back, but he stays frozen as he watches Ishida cradle his injured hand. He brings Ryuji’s bloody knuckles to his lips and Ryuji’s entire body pulls taunt like the string on his bow. This close, he can make out every detail. His delicate porcelain fingers and the stark black nail polish on his nails. The smoothness of his cheekbones. The thick red lines of makeup under his eyes and the rosy color of his lips. He’s like a doll. Something cold hits his hand that spurs him from his thoughts. He looks up to watch Ishida as he softly blows over the broken skin. Light gold and blue clouds of magic come out as it does. Ryuji watches, mesmerized, as the cold air soothes the burning and neatly stitches the ripped skin back together.




“There,” Ishida smiles, “that wasn’t so bad, now was it?”




“Thank you,” Ryuji says softly, his eyes still fixated on Ishida’s face in the moonlight. His eyes are like the light of fireflies and Ryuji thinks he could get lost in the warmth of them. But something in his mind twitches, and he pulls his hand away from Ishida’s. Ishida blinks at him in surprise, standing slowly, while Ryuji pushes himself up.




“I’ve got to get back.” Ryuji lies, handing the canteen back to the smaller man before turning back towards the tavern.

With the twenty or so years Red has on Liz - however irrelevant they are at most times - his body sometimes shows its age in small but irritating ways, especially during particularly cold winters or at the end of long days. He gets headaches more often than he used to from too much caffeine, his eyes get sore from squinting & straining on the days he forgets his glasses, & his knees & back hurt awfully after an especially active day. It's after these days that Liz - seeing the familiar way the corners of his eyes & mouth tighten in pain, the stiffness in his walk, & the telltale way he sometimes favors his left knee - says nothing & simply steers him to the couch when they're winding down for the evening. Without a word, she gently maneuvers him to lay his tired head down on her lap & he goes without complaint, happily & thankfully settling down in his favorite relaxing position with his most trusted person, as she runs her fingers lovingly over his scalp, rubs his cropped hair against the grain in a way that makes his toes curl, & strokes his neck & shoulders as far as she can reach. By the time she's done her impromptu, loving massage, he's on the cusp of sleep & with no more pain in his joints & she urges him to bed where he curls up happily with her & falls gratefully into a peaceful, painless sleep.

When Liz's time of the month comes around, she tends to get awful cramps & lots of back pain that often keep her from getting a good night's rest. Painkillers only provide minimal relief & Red can always tell that she's suffering by the way dark circles appear under her eyes from lack of sleep & she often curls in on herself with her brows furrowed in pain, even when she tries to be valiant & hide it from him. During these few days every month, Red makes a special point to wait on Liz even more than usual, insisting that she rest on the couch while he prepares dinner - even if what she wants for dinner is simply take-out - he neatly arranges it on a plate & serves it to her on a tray on the sofa. He also makes sure they have plenty of chocolate in the house, usually going out of his way to order & pick up Lizzie's favorite gourmet cupcakes from their local bakery. Lastly, to help her sleep, Red spoons up tightly behind her, knowing the only thing that will ease the pain in her back is his warmth, & splays his hands low on her tummy to help with her cramps, until she sighs in relief & gradually falls asleep in his arms.

In their line of work, the occasional tussle with an unruly blacklist is unavoidable & sometimes - after the ones where Red or Dembe were just a few seconds too late - Liz gets injured. In those regrettable instances, Red whisks her back to their house with no thought to debriefing at the Post Office, his first & only priority getting her patched up. He says nothing to her, only taking her hand & tugging her into the bathroom, where he pushes her down onto the closed toilet lid & immediately turns to the well-stocked medicine cabinet to retrieve what he needs to tend to her wounds. Usually, they're nothing worse than a deep cut or a nasty bruise, but he cleans & bandages it with a thorough & gentle touch anyway, adding a tender sweep of his fingers to her uninjured skin. As he pampers her, Liz often thinks to herself that a few minor injuries are well worth it to see the way his eyes burn in fury at whoever dared lay a hand on her & the way he stays glued to her side until her wounds are healed.

Last night I watched for the second time “Cloud Atlas” and I was brought to tears again. I wanted to ask you if you watched it and what you think. I have a feeling the book will be more shattering, I still hadn’t a chance to read it. All this intertwining of destinies, predestinations, impossible love between two men (Ben Whishaw!), the anti-utopian story, the fateful significance of the decisions we make, etc. And last but not least, the great performances of all the actors!

You're very welcome 🤗 . Ah, I'm so glad you're planning to watch FRANTZ. I came across its name while reading a CMBYN review (two days ago) and, quite frankly, remembering that I'd seen a selfie of Timmy with François Ozon the director might've made up my mind to watch it. I went in thinking it was one thing but it turned out to be quite something else. And I have to say, I loved not being able to see where the story is taking the viewer.

As for CLOUD ATLAS, I watched it a few years ago and didnt like it that much. Which might be my fault coz I always expect so much from the Wachowskis. I felt Cloud Atlas was too sprawling and figuring out who's-playing-who-again? is almost too distracting. But yes, I can imagine a second viewing might be far more rewarding. As it is, I remember Hugh Grant and Tom Hanks doing a good job and that the Frobisher storyline was the best bit. But then again I dont think I've ever seen Ben Whishaw in a role he has not delivered on. The man is amazing. Even when he's a bear. ❤️ 

Speaking of PADDINGTON, I wasnt quite sure how I felt about the director for that -Paul King- helming WONKA. While the PADDINGTON films are warm and cuddly they dont hit any high notes for me other than the jungle scenes (specially the dream sequence in the sequel). But I looked him up and he directed the tv show THE MIGHTY BOOSH and that gives me a lot of hope. TMB is a surreal, bonkers tv series that is a genius blend of weird and wacky. I'd say it's rule-bending but it just flat out throws the rule book out of the window while driving thru a forest...with a shaman and a talking gorilla in the backseat. So yeah high hopes are back on the menu.
