Movement Coordinators: Much More than the Cerebellum and Central Nuclei!
Movement coordinators are a complex network of brain structures that work together to plan, initiate and execute movements. In addition to the cerebellum and basal ganglia, other important structures are involved:
Brain structures involved in movement coordination
- Motor cortex ⚙️: Responsible for planning and executing voluntary movements.
- Premotor cortex: Involved in the planning and preparation of movements.
- Prefrontal cortex: Responsible for decision-making and movement planning.
- Thalamus: Relays motor signals between brain and muscles.
- Brain stem: Connects the brain to the spinal cord and contains motor nuclei that control movements of the eyes, head and face.

Role of each structure in movement coordination
- Cerebellum ⚖️: Responsible for fine coordination of movement, balance and posture.
- Central gray nuclei: Play an important role in planning and initiating movements, as well as learning new motor skills.
- Motor cortex: Responsible for generating motor commands that are sent to the muscles.
Conclusion
All these structures work together in a coordinated way to enable us to perform a wide variety of movements, from the simplest to the most complex.

MEDICA 2024 has come to an end and we are looking back on 4 days filled with intense exchange with our global partners and customers. It was our great pleasure to showcase our innovations in the field of hardware such as our brand new “comfort” handrail for locomotion therapy as well as the latest treadmill generation 150/50 G7 including the UserTerminal Touch Pro and perturbation or dual tasking. And of course, we really enjoyed the countless demonstrations of our software solutions like the recently launched VAST.Rehab software for VR applications or the para control 6 for enhanced treadmill control and programming.
Thank you all for taking the time to pass by our booth this year and we are looking forward to putting all the new input to practice in the upcoming months!

Episode 49: “Motor Learning and Plyometric Pistol Squats" With any sport or skill, the goal is to promote motor learning of the movement pattern. In this particular exercise, the movement pattern was a plyometric pistol squat. In the past, I’ve worked on my BODY - ankle and hip mobility, hip stability, balance, and core control. I could pump out rep after rep of pistol squats with no issues or compensations. But in order to learn a new movement pattern and successfully complete a plymometric pistol squat, I now had to work on my BRAIN. Neuroplasticity is the foundation upon which all new skills, tasks, and motor patterns are learned. Neuroplasticity refers to the potential that the brain has to reorganize by creating new neural pathways to adapt to new stimuli. By practicing a particular movement pattern over and over again, I was able to drive neuroplasticity and the motor control necessary to learn to control a plyometric pistol squat - with no movement deviations or compensations. Initially, when I attempted this 2 weeks ago, I demonstrated medial knee collapse and consistently loss my balance. But after many repetitions and practice, I was finally able to master the movement today. Next up --> lateral progressions and taller boxes. #Neuroplasticity is the key to motor skill acquisition. Check out @thebarbellphysio for an amazing 9-step pistol squat progression and read this TIME article (Google —> The Brain: How The Brain Rewires Itself) for more info on neuroplasticity. #pistolsquat #plyometrics #plyo #motorlearning #squat #slowmo ______________________________________________ The Prehab Guys: Optimizing human movement and functional capacity, promoting longevity, and keeping your body in tune one post at a time. Motor Learning.

(Playing with patterns of rotation, reaching, gaze, and weight shifting.) I love to see more people showing these important things nowadays. We need to increase the awareness of natural and practical movement over trendy exercises. There was a time when I mentioned to people about these things and even tried to implement sensorial exercises to workouts and movement education and people laughed. "We are not old people who need therapy", or " That is for babies", they would say. Even trainers. They believed that everything could be fixed or improved with weight loss, more muscle mass, and lifting heavier. It is comforting to see that there are professionals out there being educators, teaching physical literacy and motor control, and not "pumping and grinding". Keep up the good work. #quantumfit #physicalliteracy #physicaleducationforsocialchange #physicaleducation #motorlearning #humanmovementpatterns #practicalmovement #education #functionalmovement #literacy #letsmove #moving #edificationandwellbeing #learning https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz1psf_BWOf/?igshid=23evs8zabu3z
