I feel kind of bad cashing in on your pain but I am also about to move flats and need to clean and I wondered if you had any tips? You can wholly tell me to shove off though, aha (also I hope you've recovered a bit from it!!)
OOOOHHHHH what a question.
Okay yes having just finished moving and cleaning out my old apartment, sure anon I can probably wrangle some advice for you given the number of times I've done this in the past decade. I am finally no longer fully exhausted at least. good luck with your move!
I broke it down into two sections: packing/moving and cleaning
Packing and Moving
the most important box you pack and put somewhere you can absolutely keep track of it, is the box of stuff you will need your first few nights and days at the new place. Cups, plates, spoons, coffee mugs, coffee maker, whatever you will definitely need, put a few of those in this box and make sure it stays with you and not in the moving truck
throw out as much stuff ahead of time as you can. i didn't do that this move and it made everything way harder. donate clothes you don't need, throw out stuff you've been meaning to get rid of, downsize as much as possible
start packing sooner than you think you need to. Designate a staging area to pile a bunch of boxes and get to it., rn. don't wait. it WILL take longer than you think.
start with what you don't use every day, extra clothes, books, dishware, etc.
Only pack books in SMALL boxes!!!!!!!! they're heavy as fuck!!!!
Label EVERY box with details of what's in it. Not just Kitchen but kitchen-saran wrap and foil etc.
it's way easier to pack a bunch of stuff in huge rubbermaid containers instead of endless cardboard boxes but they also cost money so your mileage may vary
if you're paying movers to haul your stuff, keep and transport personal items and stuff you're worried about losing like electronics yourself, just in case.
if you're not paying movers to drive a truck for you but you can at least pay some guys to show up and load boxes onto a uhaul or whatever at the old place and unload at the new one, do that. It's worth it. Or bribe your entire family to show up to help, that works too
when you and your team are unloading at your new place, try and make sure furniture gets placed kind of where you want it to stay and that boxes end up in generally the right room
prioritize unpacking room by room to make it livable for you. push yourself to get everything unpacked asap and not leaving boxes around for months. if it takes so long to unpack that you never feel fully moved in before you have to move again it's a huge downer
try to bring plants and stuff with you early on, don't leave them for the end when they have to get squished into your car with a bunch of other stuff (remember my poor monstera which lost two leaves this way)
AND NOW CLEANING
Okay, so most of your stuff is moved out of the old place, and you're gonna clean that sucker spotless to get your full deposit back
throw more stuff away. yes more than that. i didn't do enough of this during this move and in the final hours of sleep-deprived panic i kept some stuff i should have thrown away and had to throw away stuff i wish i could have kept. don't make my mistake, be ruthless early on and get rid of stuff you don't need or is easy or cheap to replace. many things can either be thrown away or given to your neighbors.
Similarly to packing, start cleaning sooner than you think you need to, and assume everything will take twice as long as you think it will.
consolidate everything left in your apartment into one area, i chose my dining room cause that way i could clean the carpets.
if you have carpets, rent a steam cleaner. Way cheaper than paying people to do it or taking the hit to your deposit. Check first how long it's been since your landlords replaced the carpet. Where I live landlords are required to replace the carpet every three years, so if it's been longer than that you don't have to worry about doing more than a cursory vacuum. Steam Cleaning is a many hours long project. Plan accordingly.
Don't cook while you're doing this process. Get takeout, buy some frozen pre-made dinners, get cold brew coffee that's ready to go quickly. Simplify the process for yourself as much as you can.
pre-treat carpet stains and any really dirty bits with the hand held scrubbing carpet cleaner things. For me with my long haired dog it took three full attempts to fully clean the carpet. I did a first pass with the steam cleaner, then a pre-treatment with baking soda and vinegar to oxidize, then did a second steam cleaning, then treated all remaining spots with handheld carpet cleaner and let that sit for a while, then a final pass with the steam cleaner. If you have pet hair it will gunk up the workings so make sure to clean out the underside of the machine as you go
Create a plan of action. Go either room by room or area by area. My breakdown looked something like this: clear floors of all debris, vacuum and then steam clean carpets as described above, clean walls, clean patio, clean windows, first pass at mopping the floors, clean the bathroom, clean the kitchen counters and inside cupboards, clean the fridge, get everything remaining in the apartment outside, final pass mopping the floors, final pass wiping down all surfaces with clorox wipes
the main cleaning agents I used were a paint safe wall and trim cleaner, a strong degreaser for the kitchen, a scrubbing bubbles style foaming bathroom cleanser that's good on soapscum, a glass cleaner for windows and metal, and a pack of clorox wipes for the final pass. for the degreaser and foaming bathroom cleanser I sprayed every surface thoroughly, let it sit for at least ten minutes and then wiped it down
ALWAYS WEAR A VENTILATOR MASK while using cleaning products. try not to mix products, but even if you don't accidentally create mustard gas you still don't want to inhale cleaner fumes. Keep windows open and fans running so as to not gas yourself.
Similarly: ALWAYS USE WELL FITTING GLOVES or your hands will get Fucked Up. I stopped with the gloves at the end of my cleaning because I was in such a rush and I earned a chemical burn that still hasn't fully faded. I also took my shoes and socks off while steam cleaning and ended up with minor chemical burns on my feet, so I'd recommend just cleaning the bottom of your shoes instead of doing what I did.
I usually also always try to do small paint repairs anywhere the paint was damaged. Check your lease and see what size of paint damage counts as minor cosmetic damage that you don't need to worry about. Ask your landlord if they'll give you the paint directly, most of them will be so thrilled that you're doing the work yourself that they'll bring the paint to you. I also had to do some minor wood repairs, using a wood filler or spackle, letting it dry, and then priming and painting over it. I'm sure Mercury Stardust or another small home repair DIY content creator has good advice on specifics for this if you need it.
turn your fridge off when you pull everything out of it, or at least turn the temperature as close to off as possible, so you can clean the freezer section without the cleaner icing over. leaving the doors open while you're doing this will help.
When you are finished cleaning, ALWAYS take pictures and video of the entire place to prove you cleaned it. If you did the steam cleaning, keep multiple copies of your receipt. If at all possible, do a walk through of the apartment with your landlord or property manager or whatever so they and you are on the same page about what a bomb ass job you did cleaning.
IF they try to give you the run around and add a bunch of charges for stuff you know you took care of, ask for an itemized breakdown of all the repairs and cleaning they're trying to charge you for, and use your video and picture evidence and receipts to contest them.

I’m always really happy to hear that people are enjoying my stuff and it’s helpful to them!
I also really relate to struggling to keep your space organized as I used to struggle with that a lot when I first moved out. So I collected some tips that helped me and I hope they will do so for you too.
General tips:
Find a place for everything: The most important step in staying organised is to create an organization system that works for you. I think the things you need to keep in mind are 1. where do you need your things? 2. where is it easy to grab your things from? If you found a place that accomplishes both these points, try to keep your things in
Containers!: Putting things in containers prevents them from just laying around and thus reduces visual clutter. You can also just have a bucket where you put things that you need to put away later -> makes the tidying-up-process less overwhelming. This works both with containers for pencils and papers on your desk and for organizers in your closet
Put things away after using them: This is ofcourse one of the most basic tips, but it can be very helpfull to keep your place tidy. If you put things away after using them they don’t pile up.
Take time every day to de-clutter: If the last tip doesn’t work for you try this instead. For me this time used to be after coming home from school and now its in the morning before I start studying. Instead of taking a lot of time to clean everything, take a little time each day to for example put away the papers you worked on or the clothes you wore yesterday
Desk organization tips:
Keep only what you need on you desk: A cluttered workspace can be distracting and make it difficult to focus on the task at hand. It’s also helpful too keep open desk space, so you have space to work.
-> Keep things you need often nearby: Keeping the things you need most near your dominant hand makes it easier to grab them. This also makes it easier to put them back where they belong and you don’t have to shuffle things around because they’re hard to reach
Utilize your wall space, the space under your desk and stack vertically: A floating shelve/a pegboard or drawer organizers can be helpful to have more storage space and stacking things vertically is a more efficient use of space
Organize your desk according to your work process: Again if things already are where you need them to be, you don’t need to put them back and it’s also just more efficient. For example; a lot of people work from left to right, so they put documents they need to work on on the left of their desk and the documents they finished working on on the right
Wardrobe organization tips:
Clean out your closet: It can be hard to keep your wardrobe organized, when it’s overflowing so start off with downsizing and decluttering. Selling some off your stuff on websites like Poshmark or eBay or donate it to give it a second live
-> Make future clean outs easier: Place a distinct (i.e., brightly colored) hanger at the front of each section of your closet. Every time you wear something and wash it, hang it up in front of that hanger. After a few months, it’ll be pretty easy to see what got worn and what didn’t
-> Pack away seasonal clothing: Try to store the clothes you don’t need at the time somewhere else (like in another storage space/boxes or vacuum packs) to make place in your wardrobe
Create Zones: You could divide items by type, by color or based on how frequently you use them. Put high-use items in the front so they’re easy to grab and you don’t have to go through all your things. Zones also help to get an overview of everything you have so you again don’t have to go through everything

Moving closer to a dense urban area often comes at the cost of garden and green space. But with creative planning, you can still have a productive and beautiful patch, even when you haven't got a lot of room to move.
Hannah visits self-taught gardeners in South Hobart who have made the most of a small urban garden, producing food year-round.
Vivienne Luke and partner Des moved here nine years ago after a decision to downsize from a larger property twenty kms out of town. “We were faced with the conundrum; how do you make a garden in a space like this?” says Vivienne. The previous garden was much bigger, with rich soil, flat aspect, and lots of sun. “It was wonderful... (Moving here), we wanted a vegetable garden, some fruit trees and a native garden, but we didn’t know what was possible.”
The outdoor space that wraps around Vivian and Des’ unit is only 150 square meters. The narrow sides are jam-packed with raised and inground vegie beds, climbers up the wall, fruit trees and a lovely native corner. And the unit balcony is now being consumed by pot plants. “I really got into pot plants because I ran out of space, and I wanted more space.” The original planting was hedges of camelias, which were removed in favour of raised vegie beds with inbuilt sitting space. “The height was really important to make it easy for me to use, but also the indentations in the beds make it just so much easier to reach each bed,” says Vivienne of the raised beds which are netted and protected from local pests.
The raspberries are Des’ domain "he isn’t really interested in the rest of the garden, but he loves his raspberries. I call him my sous chef... he gives them tender loving care all year round,” says Vivienne. Des harvests about one punnet a day in the summer and has built the raspberry bed against a Rio mesh structure. Des says, “it’s a very narrow bed, so we have to work hard at keeping them contained.” Vivienne adds, “(raspberries) are invasive, you have to control them, they even pop up in vegetable beds.” To maximise their produce, they’re using all the vertical space. “The beans love it there with the sun. And I discovered you can grow cucumbers vertically, so that’s been a great success,” says Vivienne. This garden has identified and utilised every microclimate that is available. Even the tomatoes are nestled up against a northeast-facing wall, soaking up the warmth.
Vivienne says, “it was one of my dreams to have a Tassie native garden... it’s a lovely place to come for quiet time” and is inspired by the variety of native flowers, perfumes and the symbiotic relationship between plants and birds. “Even just the smell of the leaves, there’s just nothing like it” says, Vivienne. The garden includes Banksia marginata, leptospermums, Pomaderris, Allocasuarina, low growing correas and a Eucalyptus caesia all designed in a layered wild planting for maximum impact and seclusion.
With tips on how to best use a small space for gardening, Vivienne says, “one of the crucial things is the orientation of the property, to maximise the sun. The other is spacing, and most important of all, grow what you want to eat. The things that you love are what you need to grow, it’s life-giving. I love getting out in the garden, I love watching it evolve... I can disappear into this space for hours and feel a lot better at the end of it.” It's important with limited space like this to do some planning around the amount of soil and sun you have, and to choose the right size plants so you can have easy access. And if you do happen to have a few failures along the way, don't worry. You’re still another step towards garden glory.

Accidentally deleted my pervious post gonna attempt to summarize.
So basically my family is having a difficult time right now. We've been having car troubles for a few months now, we think we have that solved, but that's still a maybe and fixing a car is expensive. It's especially expensive to put a new to us but used motor in a car which is what the most recent mechanic visit was for. The rent for our current place has been raised, and what I didn't know previously is my mom was already struggling to make rent some months. Basically that means we have to move, and downsize. We will be selling the clothes we think will bring in some money, and donating some others.
We will be trying to find a new place while we pack, and will be pulling together all the money we have saved to see if it is possible to buy a house (which I don't think is likely). I will be looking for ways to make some cash on the side until I can find a job. I didn't have one previous as I'm still trying to graduate, and my mother wanted me to focus on school. If we cannot find a cheaper place we will have to move in with my grandmother, which would please her greatly, and displease me even more as we do not have a good relationship.

Do you have any tips for decluttering as part of a move? Currently in the middle of sorting through all my possessions to move into a home with my gf and the brainpower it takes to make these decisions is killer with my adhd :\ I know you made a cross-country move so just wondering if you have any advice!
oh man I don’t know I’m probably not the best person to ask this as I think I still have a lot of clutter even post move… but I guess I tried to get rid of anything I hadn’t touched or thought about in the last six months unless it had actually meaningful sentimental value. it helped that I was moving to a different climate so I could get rid of tons of clothes I’d been hanging onto but hadn’t worn in ages! and I also radically downsized my library. I also kept a big box of stuff I wanted to make a final decision on later and I’d toss things in there if I was wavering instead of pausing mid-packing to make a decision on each one. idk my own adhd brain can really get lost in tangent tasks where you get distracted by a random small task or decision and then look up to realize you’ve sunk two hours into it when it wasn’t that important. so being able to be like “I’m not pausing at all! I’ll just drop the thing in this box and then return to it later” was helpful for keeping myself on track.
