SECOND QUARTER QUELL II UPRISING AU
Ok, look. I’m obsessed with Second Quarter Quell generation and I have A LOT of head canons about them. And sometimes these head canons contradict each other, lol. Previously I showed you some of my illustrations about SQQ generation but it was always one particular AU (where they all are kinda friends/classmates?). And I think it’s time to show you another one that I also like. This is AU (or “head canon” since we don’t really know what is real and what is not) where all of them were part of revolutionary movement before the 50th Hunger Games. Some things are the same in both universes (Mr. Hawthorne and Mrs.Mellark are best friends in both, haha), some are completely different (Mr.Mellark and Mrs.Mellark were not in love in “uprising au” and had to marry for the sake of revolution after Mr.M/Mr.E partnership was broken, oh oh, that was super dramatic!). But they look pretty much the same in every AU I have in my head haha. So here are quick portraits of SQQ gen characters and their confident files from D13 before the 50th Hunger Games reaping day (everything went wrong after that, huh).
About Donner sisters. Peeta said that Mr.Mellark described them as “twins or something” and I interpreted this “something” as that they were not identical twins. Katniss was amazed by young Mrs.Undersee and Madge’s similarity but she didn’t have this feeling about Maysilee. So I think they looked like sisters but not super similar to each other. I mean, I’m a mother of identical twins, I know what I’m talking about lol.
These portraits are not perfect and were done quickly but I really tried 😅. Funny fact: overall I have more clear vision of SQQ characters than THG characters, haha (especially young Haymitch, Mr.Everdeen, Hazelle and Mrs.Mellark). Oh, and you have no idea how much time I’ve spent on these files lol. I don’t even know WHY I did it, because obviously no one cares, but this idea lived in my head for far too long. Ugh, I’m finally free of it. And now I need to return to my work and also main series uffffffff.
P.S. “agent Fox” is Haymitch’s girl, but I have no decent head canon for her
P.P.S. I don’t mention any names because I try not to be too attached to particular names for these characters (who knows maybe one day Suzanne will reveal some information and I don’t want to be upset lol)

On the topic of Bisexual Peeta (which, let's be real, when am I not on that topic?)
You CANNOT tell me, in all seriousness, that Mr. Mellark wasn't ALSO bisexual.
‘Because when he sings … even the birds stop to listen.’”
THERE WAS NO REASON FOR HIM TO DESCRIBE KATNISS' DAD LIKE THIS. He was POETIC about that man. One step away from describing the shape of his hands.
He was like, "Yeah, he took my girl but have you looked at him? Have you heard his VOICE? honestly, valid. Good for her."
(Just say you wanted him to kiss you, it's okay.)

You mentioned you had thoughts on how Mr Mellark's play into Peeta feeling unwanted and unneeded, I was wondering if you wanted to share them ?
Because I just never know what to think of him (except that it is kinda funny to me that he is essentially "the Gale" in the parents's love triangle), he seems very kind like Peeta but also incredibly passive in his own family.
and also if you had any other headcanon surrounding the Mellark's family ?
TW: domestic violence, child abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse
Right this is going to get long 😂 So, my headcanon about the Mellark family/Mr. Mellark is sort of a mix between a family I have a personal connection to and a few families I've had to call child protection on. One physically and emotionally abusive mother, and one father who is caught up in domestic abuse himself, but would be labelled as failing to protect his children.
First, I'm going to clarify that I think Peeta believes he isn't loveable, which makes him feel unwanted and unneeded, but that is his core childhood wound. (see more about Enneagram Type 2, which is how I read Peeta's character).
There are a few components to Peeta getting treated the way he was. First is that while I do think the Mellark parents started their courtship and marriage believing they were in love, they both lacked the ability to effectively resolve conflict. She's aggressive and he just wants to make peace, which often leads to him placating her rather than standing up for himself. Their fights will often turn into Mrs. Mellark verbally and emotionally abusing her husband (he's bigger than her, so she doesn't physically abuse him, but the verbal and emotional abuse do damage). It doesn't help that they've both struggled to get by financially their whole lives and getting married doesn't solve that problem.
This brings in the boys. They're ecstatic about their first baby boy, but parenthood brings more challenges and there's more strain. Their first has a preference for Mr. Mellark, so when their second baby boy comes, Mrs. Mellark lays her claim on him and he's her golden child who can do no wrong. The stress of running the bakery, being parents to a toddler and baby, and their consistent fighting continues with Mr. Mellark getting the brunt, cruel end of his wife's words and emotional violence.
Despite her reputation, Mrs. Mellark doesn't enjoy this dynamic, she's stuck in patterns from her past. She gets especially unhappy when that hunter comes by to trade squirrels and Mr. Mellark asks after his wife, a girl he used to court. So when Mr. Mellark wants a little girl, Mrs. Mellark agrees to have one more to try for a girl. To try and save the marriage.
And then Peeta comes. Mr. Mellark has a big heart so he loves him anyway and Mrs. Mellark loves him as any parent does, but Peeta isn't the magic solution to her marriage that she wanted. And a couple months after Peeta's born, Mr. Everdeen comes by and boasts about his new little girl. His wife, the one her husband once wanted to marry, had a girl where she had failed. All of this gets redirected to Peeta and he becomes the scapegoat child. While Mrs. Mellark gave her older two corporeal punishment (spankings) she goes harder on Peeta than the other two, especially her golden middle boy. The older two take their mother's lead at times, though their feelings are a little more complicated. Sometimes Peeta's one of the brothers, but when Mother gets in one of her moods, they'll use Peeta as a shield.
Now Mr. Mellark tries to make up for all of this by being Peeta's buddy, giving him all the love his mother doesn't give him. That makes Mrs. Mellark more resentful, who wants her husband to love her like he did when they were courting and first married. And it also confuses Peeta more, because when Mrs. Mellark comes after him whether verbally and/or physically, his father never fights her. He might come in-between and try to calm her down, but if that doesn't work, she'll press on anyway and go after Peeta. His father doesn't even chastise her for what she's done to him. Time after time, Peeta gets the message even from his father that he's not worth protecting, which means he's not loveable. His personality, though, is convinced that if he learns to appease Mrs. Mellark and not anger her, and if he keeps doing helpful things for his father, and make jokes with his brothers, that they'll come to love him and treat him that way. The way he sees that miner's daughter love her little sister and the way he's watched her parents love each other. And he learns how to keep a lid on his mother as he gets older and bigger, but there are still days her anger has nowhere to go but with her hands on him or calling him names.
And still, all his father has is empty words his mother never listens to. Because if Peeta left the family, he wouldn't be missed, because he'd never truly been loved by them.
So yeah. That's how I headcanon Mr. Mellark and the whole Mellark family dynamic affecting Peeta and his subsequent relationship with Katniss.
Thanks for the ask and letting me explain all of this!

Let's talk about Mr Everdeen, Mrs Everdeen, and Mr Mellark.
“He said, ‘See that little girl? I wanted to marry her mother, but she ran off with a coal miner,’” Peeta says.
“What? You’re making that up!” I exclaim.
“No, true story,” Peeta says. “And I said, ‘A coal miner? Why did she want a coal miner if she could’ve had you?’ And he said, ‘Because when he sings... even the birds stop to listen.’”
From this, do you think Mr Mellark had serious relationship with Mrs Everdeen?
Do you think her family disown her, after Mrs Everdeen marry with Mr Everdeen?
Thank you :) @curiousnonny
Okay. Gonna start with a simpler one: I do think Mrs. Everdeens family disowns her. I feel like if they were both alive and not estranged they would have at least been around after she checked out after Mr. Everdeen died. Her fathers family were all likely miners and couldn't step in like Mrs. Everdeens parents could, and they didn't so yea. My assumption is they are estranged.
NOW the more...I guess contentious one? Maybe? I guess we'll see.
Mr. Mellark says that he specifically WANTED to marry her. That implies to me that it isn't some like of arranged thing, or explicit pressure from their families. That word says to me that Mr. Mellark did have real, genuine feelings for her at the very least. And I don't think that it's a jump of logic to say that would make one assume the two of them were friends, if nothing else. Considering they also living in the same area, around the same age presumably and going to the same school.
Mrs. Everdeen's feelings, and if or not she and Peeta's father were in an actual serious relationship at some point...I think it could go either way. Also convinced it doesn't really matter much. Mrs. Everdeen, no matter how close she and Mr. Mellark were ended up falling for Mr. Everdeen, and Mr. Mellark did what he could to move on. But it was still in his heart enough to tell his son.

Hi anon sorry for the delay!! I’ve been busy at work and this got lost in my notifications.
I definitely think this is an interesting theory! Its possible that Mr. Mellark and Mrs. Everdeen had a serious relationship, but I’m honestly not sure how serious.
Remember we’re hearing about this after the fact from Peeta. We’re not sure how his dad really phrased it or meant it.
It definitely sounds like they had something! Perhaps a fleeting teenage romance! I’d like to hear more from Suzanne Collins about it.
It’s possible Mrs. Everdeen’s family disowned her for marrying Katniss’s dad (a coal miner), but I don’t think we have confirmation for that in canon. It could explain why she has no other family or friends.

I like to think that Mr. Mellark had a relationship with Mrs. Everdeen but from this, we get no indication either way. I think either option is just as likely. I like to believe that they were expecting to marry each other, maybe like how it was somewhat expected that Katniss would marry Gale, but Mr. Everdeen walked into their lives singing so beautifully that everything changed the same way Peeta kind of walked into Katniss's life unexpectedly. I like the idea of a parallel, although I know both situations are completely different.
Also, I like the idea the Mrs. Everdeen loved them both but loved Mr. Everdeen more. I like this simply for the drama.
Now for whether or not Mrs. Everdeen was disowned I want to say yes. We know from Gale that there is some serious distrust / dislike between the Seam and the town, we also know that Mrs. Everdeen brought 'little treasures' from her life in town to the Seam. This implies to me that there was no going back, no contact whatsoever with her parents after she left.
Thank you so much for the ask, this was fun!

I definitely think Mr. Mellarks relationship with Mrs. Everdeens was pretty serious. I've read in a few fics that they were dating or engaged before she called it off, which I could see that.
But I can also see it as he had a huge crush on her, and she fell for a coal miner instead. It could be more like a love triangle that Katniss has to deal with minus her family disowning her.
But Mr. Mellark is like Peeta. He wouldn't hold a grudge and would silently support her decision.
I do think at one point, the 3 of them were friends. Since Mr. Everdeen wasn't exactly like Gale. He was just seam, and she was just a merchant. In my mind, I see him as more caring and charming, especially loving his wife and daughters so much, just like I imagine Mr. Mellark did the same with his boys but not able to protect them from their mother.

A Mouse Tail: Warm Hearts & Nose Kisses
Tumblr media
For @rosegardeninwinter
Dearest Cate,
I’m working on finishing this for you birthday, though I might not succeed before the end of the day. In the meantime, I hope you’ll enjoy these snippets. I hope you’ve had a lovely day!
Snippets of Chapter Three (working title, either The Date or True Love, depending on whether I add one more chapter or not):
Peeta’s POV
I do not know why Katniss has agreed to go on a date with me‒me, a cursed man who turned up naked in her bedroom claiming to have been her pet mouse–but I’m counting my lucky stars. It takes a special kind of person to break the spell cast upon me, and to believe such a fantastical tale as I told her, but I always knew Katniss Everdeen was extraordinary. In my wildest dreams I never expected any of this to transpire.
While my fate seemed sealed, things are definitely looking up. Time may not be on my side, but apparently, magic is. I now have a fairy godfather watching over me, and he has agreed to help me win Katniss’s heart. Or, at the very least, dress me for the part. Naturally, I was skeptical of Cinna at first‒and why shouldn’t I be after what I’ve experienced? But thus far, Cinna has proven himself to be a benevolent entity. The second part of my stepmother’s curse, earning the love of my fair maiden, will be far more difficult than procuring a kiss from her in mouse form, and so I can use all the help I can get.
*** Exhausted from transforming from a tiny mouse back into myself and fuzzy-headed over my encounter with Cinna, I finally return home. I’ve been away for what feels so long, and like all voyagers, I half-expect home to look different, somehow. But it doesn't. It’s exactly the same. I stumble up the steps of the bakery on my still wobbly legs (my bad leg is particularly bothering me), and I’m unsure what I’ll find. Has my stepmother really gone?
I’m surprised to find my father up at this hour; he’s seated at the kitchen table, his shoulders hunched. He looks up wearily as I enter, and I swear his jaw drops to the table.
“Peeta,” he gasps.
“Hello, father,” I croak, tears welling up in my eyes. It feels like forever since I’ve looked upon him as myself. He appears so much smaller...
Well, of course he does, fool, I tell myself.  You were seeing him through the eyes of a rodent!
“Peeta?” he repeats my name as a question, his strong jaw quivering, his own blue eyes filling up with tears. My father was never a man who couldn’t cry; although, he rarely did.
He stands up suddenly, knocking his chair over in the process. It clatters against the floor. Before I can blink, he’s wrapping his arms around me in a fierce bear hug. I hug him back and let him sob against my shoulder. I’m crying, too, now. I’m sure he’ll have many questions for me once our emotional reunion is finished, but for now, I simply stay in his arms.

Here, have a one-shot, this time a prequel to Damaged, Broken, and Unhinged!
Title: Love Gives
Summary: Set in the same universe as our story Damaged, Broken, and Unhinged. Mrs. Everdeen wasn’t always a broken shell of a woman. This is the story of how she went from Apothecary heir to miner’s wife.
Excerpt:
She turned her eyes away, instead landing on a eighteen-year-old Seam boy who was now standing up with the band. The boy cleared his throat and, one by one, the people around him’s conversations stopped and they waited with anticipation. Laurel was intrigued.
The boy opened his mouth, and what flowed from it was powerful enough to make the mockingjays surrounding the meadow stop their singing to listen to him. It was beautiful. Magical. Ethereal. And weights that she didn’t even know she carried lifted from Laurel’s shoulders to float away on the trail of that wonderful voice. Unbidden, she closed her eyes to better concentrate on the song. A love song written by their only female Victor to a lover who she could never have.
No one moved. It felt as if no one even dared breathe during the duration of the song. Laurel kept catching herself, holding her breath so as not to disturb the almost-transcendental beauty.
When he finished the last note lingered in the air, hanging there like a snowflake or a dream. Slowly the mockingjays, one by one, began to sing, mimicking the last few notes of the boy’s song.
You can find it on:

hi i'd like to cause damage today :3
6 year old Peeta Mellark, very seriously, asked Mr. Everdeen for Katniss' hand in marriage when he was trading at the bakery one day.
Mr. Everdeen was absolutely chuffed about it. He thought it was the cutest thing in the world and it took everything in him to maintain a serious tone when he responded with:
"That's a really big commitment. What do you have to offer my daughter, young man?"
"I can draw real good, my cupcakes are way better than both of my brothers, and I'll always let her take the top bunk."
"Well, son. Those are all really fine and respectable offerings. But if Katniss is anything like her mother, she's going to do what she likes. But if you ever ask her, you'll have my blessing. Just make sure to lead with the top bunk, that's a major selling point."

Peeta's mom probably died thinking Peeta's story about eloping with Katniss and getting her pregnant was real. Who would've told her otherwise? They couldn't call home. She doesn't know Gale. She doesnt talk to Katniss' family. She probably died thinking her son married that "Seam brat" and her grandchild was gonna be raised by other Seam trash. Her son married the daughter of the girl her husband loved and never really got over. I think that's beautiful. Die mad, Mrs. Mellark you evil witch.
