hi i'd like to cause damage today :3
6 year old Peeta Mellark, very seriously, asked Mr. Everdeen for Katniss' hand in marriage when he was trading at the bakery one day.
Mr. Everdeen was absolutely chuffed about it. He thought it was the cutest thing in the world and it took everything in him to maintain a serious tone when he responded with:
"That's a really big commitment. What do you have to offer my daughter, young man?"
"I can draw real good, my cupcakes are way better than both of my brothers, and I'll always let her take the top bunk."
"Well, son. Those are all really fine and respectable offerings. But if Katniss is anything like her mother, she's going to do what she likes. But if you ever ask her, you'll have my blessing. Just make sure to lead with the top bunk, that's a major selling point."

I find it so telling about the subtle hints of Katniss opening up to only Peeta about her father. Katniss rarely talks to anyone about her father, but she does to Peeta. When Katniss mentions the plant book, and how it was passed down to her mother, she talks about how her father also added plants. I can imagine Katniss telling Peeta all this. How her father wrote down the additional plants, and she would like for him to draw them. Her trusting him with this, and how she closes the plant book when she visits 12 with the camera crew, tells you how special this is. Also, I could just imagine Peeta smiling softly and nodding when she tells him about the significance of the plant book, and loving every minute of being with her. Even when Katniss is being so anal about every part he draws.
Then, when she talks about how she couldn’t wait to tell Peeta about Bonnie and Twill, whom she found at her father’s cabin. Like I wonder if Peeta knew about the cabin bc her comfortablity about talking to him about it should say something. Perhaps when she woke up from a nightmare, she would mention her father’s lake. Or when she told him about Bonnie and Twill, Peeta wouldn’t help but ask her about the cabin and the lake. And she would talk about it. But then again, it wasn’t confirmed if Katniss ended up talking to Peeta about them. So who knows, but just her even thinking about it is so telling, no?
And lastly, the memory book. Where Katniss writes down her father’s laugh. Like Katniss crying and talking about her father, and kissing his picture. Yes, Katniss only opening up to Peeta about her father should tell you how special and close their bond is.

So we know that Everlark would have happened anyways, regardless the universe or circumstances but not many people talk about how different Katniss’ personality and behavior would be in a universe where Mr. Everdeen survived. This is a girl who used to play house and proudly raised her hand to sing The Valley Song on the first day of school (I could never) people!
She lost her father during the age range that most girls start puberty (8 - 13 years old) and was thrusted into being a mother figure for Prim and head of household thus not allowing her to explore normal things that kids that age do such as developing romantic thoughts and feelings.
In a universe where Mr. Everdeen lived I see her still being a bit of an introvert and reserved but I doubt she would walk with a scowl on her face all the time and try to project an image of intimidation and indifference in order to protect her own feelings. Seeing the love her parents share at that age would most likely lead to be more comfortable accepting her compassionate side and as well as have a positive effect on her early interactions with Peeta (how they finally talk to each other is up your imagination lol).
I also see Madge being her best friend in this universe instead or Gale but I have a question for you guys. Given that her and Gale’s relationship was forged out of them both becoming head of household at young ages and being transactional where taught each other in exchange for something to provide families, do you think they would become friends?

Mr. Everdeen, both in the fandom and in the narrative, has a similar situation to Jack Pearson from This is Us. They were both great husbands and fathers, which due to their tragic and early deaths, have created a sort of halo around the memory of them. This is Us is a family drama and so it takes time to unpack Jack's flaws and how his family idealized him after his death and the audience can analyze his faults for themselves. However, given that THG is a war story and Katniss is our narrator, the information we get about Mr. Everdeen is incredibly biased. He was a hunter and a singer, he wooed a merchant girl so good she followed him to the Seam, and spent his adult life working in the mines. We know he sang at least one rebellious song and taught it to his young daughter, which is perhaps the only indication of a flaw we see and people don't really bring up how much he was putting Katniss in danger as a result. People love to vilify Mrs. Everdeen, Mr. Mellark, and especially Mrs. Mellark (she deserves it) and yet as a result of being dead from the start of the narrative and having our nearly all of the information about him shared through his adoring daughter, we don't see Mr. Everdeen's faults. We don't know how he would have responded to any of the events that happened in the series or what he would have done in a similar situation to Mrs. Everdeen after losing the love of his life and becoming a single parent and then losing his youngest daughter.
I'm not saying Mr. Everdeen was a bad man. I just think that the fandom views him from Katniss's perspective, but he must have had his own faults and weaknesses just like everyone else does, and I'm very interested to think of the flawed man behind the rose-colored memories.

Something something Prims baby clothes being kept long after she needed them but getting sold once Mr. Everdeen has died as a sign of lost hope… something something
Of all the things she could have chosen for katniss to desperately try and sell– which makes sense, not being able to sell baby clothes in a world where your children get reaped for a death game– WHY baby clothes. Maybe they couldn’t sell them just as katniss couldn’t, but it’s still fabric that might be utilized for something else. Mr. Everdeen is said to be a good negotiator.
Why keep them when there’s no one to wear them? Because there was a possibility. It doesn’t even have to be taken literally as “we might have another baby” it’s just… an end. To the warm family of her childhood, to safety, to full bellies and hope and being a child herself

SECOND QUARTER QUELL II UPRISING AU
Ok, look. I’m obsessed with Second Quarter Quell generation and I have A LOT of head canons about them. And sometimes these head canons contradict each other, lol. Previously I showed you some of my illustrations about SQQ generation but it was always one particular AU (where they all are kinda friends/classmates?). And I think it’s time to show you another one that I also like. This is AU (or “head canon” since we don’t really know what is real and what is not) where all of them were part of revolutionary movement before the 50th Hunger Games. Some things are the same in both universes (Mr. Hawthorne and Mrs.Mellark are best friends in both, haha), some are completely different (Mr.Mellark and Mrs.Mellark were not in love in “uprising au” and had to marry for the sake of revolution after Mr.M/Mr.E partnership was broken, oh oh, that was super dramatic!). But they look pretty much the same in every AU I have in my head haha. So here are quick portraits of SQQ gen characters and their confident files from D13 before the 50th Hunger Games reaping day (everything went wrong after that, huh).
About Donner sisters. Peeta said that Mr.Mellark described them as “twins or something” and I interpreted this “something” as that they were not identical twins. Katniss was amazed by young Mrs.Undersee and Madge’s similarity but she didn’t have this feeling about Maysilee. So I think they looked like sisters but not super similar to each other. I mean, I’m a mother of identical twins, I know what I’m talking about lol.
These portraits are not perfect and were done quickly but I really tried 😅. Funny fact: overall I have more clear vision of SQQ characters than THG characters, haha (especially young Haymitch, Mr.Everdeen, Hazelle and Mrs.Mellark). Oh, and you have no idea how much time I’ve spent on these files lol. I don’t even know WHY I did it, because obviously no one cares, but this idea lived in my head for far too long. Ugh, I’m finally free of it. And now I need to return to my work and also main series uffffffff.
P.S. “agent Fox” is Haymitch’s girl, but I have no decent head canon for her
P.P.S. I don’t mention any names because I try not to be too attached to particular names for these characters (who knows maybe one day Suzanne will reveal some information and I don’t want to be upset lol)

As requested, Mr and Mrs Everdeen (I think I read a fan fic once that named Katniss's father Jonquil and I like that. I also like the idea of him having a beard). And then the actor who played Mrs Everdeen in the movie said that she thinks of her as Clara (I also like this name for her. It seems like one of the ones that would continue on from now into the time of the books--like Annie). Those flowers in Clara's hair are Katniss blossoms and Primroses. I tried to make her look a lot like Prim and to give Jonquil more of Katniss's features.

Let's talk about Mr Everdeen, Mrs Everdeen, and Mr Mellark.
“He said, ‘See that little girl? I wanted to marry her mother, but she ran off with a coal miner,’” Peeta says.
“What? You’re making that up!” I exclaim.
“No, true story,” Peeta says. “And I said, ‘A coal miner? Why did she want a coal miner if she could’ve had you?’ And he said, ‘Because when he sings... even the birds stop to listen.’”
From this, do you think Mr Mellark had serious relationship with Mrs Everdeen?
Do you think her family disown her, after Mrs Everdeen marry with Mr Everdeen?
Thank you :) @curiousnonny
Okay. Gonna start with a simpler one: I do think Mrs. Everdeens family disowns her. I feel like if they were both alive and not estranged they would have at least been around after she checked out after Mr. Everdeen died. Her fathers family were all likely miners and couldn't step in like Mrs. Everdeens parents could, and they didn't so yea. My assumption is they are estranged.
NOW the more...I guess contentious one? Maybe? I guess we'll see.
Mr. Mellark says that he specifically WANTED to marry her. That implies to me that it isn't some like of arranged thing, or explicit pressure from their families. That word says to me that Mr. Mellark did have real, genuine feelings for her at the very least. And I don't think that it's a jump of logic to say that would make one assume the two of them were friends, if nothing else. Considering they also living in the same area, around the same age presumably and going to the same school.
Mrs. Everdeen's feelings, and if or not she and Peeta's father were in an actual serious relationship at some point...I think it could go either way. Also convinced it doesn't really matter much. Mrs. Everdeen, no matter how close she and Mr. Mellark were ended up falling for Mr. Everdeen, and Mr. Mellark did what he could to move on. But it was still in his heart enough to tell his son.

On the topic of Bisexual Peeta (which, let's be real, when am I not on that topic?)
You CANNOT tell me, in all seriousness, that Mr. Mellark wasn't ALSO bisexual.
‘Because when he sings … even the birds stop to listen.’”
THERE WAS NO REASON FOR HIM TO DESCRIBE KATNISS' DAD LIKE THIS. He was POETIC about that man. One step away from describing the shape of his hands.
He was like, "Yeah, he took my girl but have you looked at him? Have you heard his VOICE? honestly, valid. Good for her."
(Just say you wanted him to kiss you, it's okay.)

I definitely think Mr. Mellarks relationship with Mrs. Everdeens was pretty serious. I've read in a few fics that they were dating or engaged before she called it off, which I could see that.
But I can also see it as he had a huge crush on her, and she fell for a coal miner instead. It could be more like a love triangle that Katniss has to deal with minus her family disowning her.
But Mr. Mellark is like Peeta. He wouldn't hold a grudge and would silently support her decision.
I do think at one point, the 3 of them were friends. Since Mr. Everdeen wasn't exactly like Gale. He was just seam, and she was just a merchant. In my mind, I see him as more caring and charming, especially loving his wife and daughters so much, just like I imagine Mr. Mellark did the same with his boys but not able to protect them from their mother.

Here, have a one-shot, this time a prequel to Damaged, Broken, and Unhinged!
Title: Love Gives
Summary: Set in the same universe as our story Damaged, Broken, and Unhinged. Mrs. Everdeen wasn’t always a broken shell of a woman. This is the story of how she went from Apothecary heir to miner’s wife.
Excerpt:
She turned her eyes away, instead landing on a eighteen-year-old Seam boy who was now standing up with the band. The boy cleared his throat and, one by one, the people around him’s conversations stopped and they waited with anticipation. Laurel was intrigued.
The boy opened his mouth, and what flowed from it was powerful enough to make the mockingjays surrounding the meadow stop their singing to listen to him. It was beautiful. Magical. Ethereal. And weights that she didn’t even know she carried lifted from Laurel’s shoulders to float away on the trail of that wonderful voice. Unbidden, she closed her eyes to better concentrate on the song. A love song written by their only female Victor to a lover who she could never have.
No one moved. It felt as if no one even dared breathe during the duration of the song. Laurel kept catching herself, holding her breath so as not to disturb the almost-transcendental beauty.
When he finished the last note lingered in the air, hanging there like a snowflake or a dream. Slowly the mockingjays, one by one, began to sing, mimicking the last few notes of the boy’s song.

Wishing we could have gotten to hear Mr. Everdeen singing The Hanging Tree while little Peeta listened to see if the birds stopped to hear him sing. Just imagine a clear tenor singing it in acapella, only the sound of his footsteps accompanying him and it echoing between the town building in the middle of winter.

Thinking about how Katniss's relationship with her mother gets better as her romance with Peeta progresses. How she is basically saying "I know what it is to love now. I understand the pain you went through when Dad died. I'm sorry"
