Steph walks over to where the others were loosely scattered around the cave.

“You’re late.” Bruce sighs. “Why. I told you this was an important briefing.”

The blonde rolls her eyes, scoffing at him. “I’m sorry, would you rather I let Nocturna break into the old planetarium? I had to stop her, and then she said her usual cryptic bullshit about me reminding her of someone she once knew or whatever.“

Bruce pinched the bridge of his nose and opened his mouth.

“What did you just say?” Steph jumped slightly and turned around in surprise. She had never heard Jason sound like that before. She couldn’t place the emotion in his voice, and his face was pale, almost drained of blood.

“I… had to take a detour to stop Nocturna?” She answered cautiously.

“That’s not possible. She died when I was still Robin.”

Dick interjected, his voice off in a way Steph didn’t understand as he turned an accusatory glare on Bruce. “Did you not tell him?”

“I didn’t think it was relevant.” The oldest man replied stiffly.

Steph’s brow furrowed. “I’m missing something. What—”

“Not relevant?” Jason straightened up, turning wide eyes on Bruce. “You don’t think it’s important for me to know that my— that she— she’s alive?”

Dick’s eyes narrowed. “Bruce… does Nathalie know Jason is alive?”

“…No.”

Jason’s knees buckled slightly and Dick rushed to catch him.

“Steph,” He said firmly. “I know Nathalie gave you her number for emergencies.”

“Yeah that was weird, I don’t know why—“

Dick lowered himself and Jason to sit on the ground as he steamrolled over her interruption. “Call her. Now. Tell her she needs to get here ASAP.”

“Nightwing—“ Bruce grumbled.

He snapped. “You shut up. I’d even suggest leaving if you don’t want to get killed when she gets here. Now, Steph.”

She grabbed her phone, eyes darting between Bruce, who was standing tensely with his arms crossed, Dick, who was glaring at him from the floor, and Jason, who hadn’t said a word and was clutching Dick’s arm like he would die if he let go.

“Okay.” She sighed. “But why? How would she even know how to get here? Why does she know how to get here?”

“She just does. And if she tries to say no, tell her I’m calling in the favor she owes me.”

Steph stepped away to make the call and as she did Jason finally spoke.

“She owes you a favor?”

“Yeah Little Wing, she does.”

Both of their voices were so, so fragile, and filled with something she didn’t understand.

The phone rang twice. “Spoiler, to what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I am… not really sure.” Steph replied, voice still laced with confusion. “But I’m supposed to ask you to come to the cave. I didn’t even know you knew the cave existed.”

Nocturna exhaled sharply. “No. I haven’t set foot in there since— no. You can ask anything else of me Spoiler, but not that.”

“I’m also supposed to tell you if you say no Nightwing is calling in his favor.”

“Give him the phone.”

Steph stepped forward, holding the phone out to Dick.

“What are you playing at Richard?”

Steph and Jason both inhaled, but for different reasons. Steph was surprised. Nocturna knew their identities? She glanced at Jason and saw something that seemed like hope shining in his eyes.

“Nathalie, please.” Dick whispered.

The woman on the other end sighed. “Alright.”

Click.

Jason sobbed, and Bruce turned away.

“Why didn’t you call me.” It’s not a question. Dick’s voice is frigid.

Bruce exhales. “Nightwing…”

“No. I’m not talking to Batman, I’m asking Bruce why he didn’t call me. My little brother is dead!”

“You were in space.” Bruce finally turns around to look at Dick. His face is haggard and he has large bags under his eyes. “The mission—”

Dick laughs bitterly, stepping forward and jabbing a finger in Bruce’s chest. “I don’t give a fuck about the mission. You had his funeral without me. You buried my little brother and I wasn’t there! And neither were any of his friends!”

“I don‘t—”

“And why the hell is there some new kid running around dressed as Robin?”

“Tim is—”

“I don’t care who he is! I care that you’ve stuffed another kid in that suit! Into my colors. The colors I gave to my little brother. The colors that got him killed.”

“Jason was reckless!” Bruce snaps. “I’m going to train Tim better, he won’t fail like that.”

Dick stiffens.

“I’m *sorry,* what did you just say?”

He repeats himself. “Jason was reckless. Tim will be better”

“How dare you.” Dick hisses, stepping closer to Bruce. “How dare you. Jason wasn’t reckless! He called me, did you know that? Left a voicemail. He ran because you benched him. He thought being your son was contingent on him being your Robin.”

Bruce’s face goes ashen. “Dick—”

“No. I can’t even look at you right now. And I think you’re making a mistake with the new Robin, but I can’t stop you can I? Even though that’s my name. Does Batman ever consider the feelings of others? Of course not!”

Dick turns around to leave, but before he takes more than a few steps something catches his eye.

“What’s that.” His voice is almost silent as he walks forward, stopping in front of the glass case.

“Dick—”

“A good soldier. A good soldier.”

Dick turns back to face Bruce, face unreadable.

“Is that really how you see us? Soldiers in your crusade against crime? Is that all we are? What happened to being your sons?”

Bruce opens his mouth, but gets cut off.

“No, no, soldiers are disposable aren’t they? You can cut us off when we disagree, you don’t have to mourn us when you get us killed.

CRACK

Bruce backhands him.

Dick laughs and spits blood at his feet, ears ringing.

“Don’t you dare blame me for Jason’s death!”

“No? You were the one that made him your soldier. My brother is dead because of you.”

Dick turns on his heel and marches towards the exit of the cave. “Don’t call me unless the world is ending. In fact don’t call me even then. Have Diana call Donna. And don’t even think about sending the little cuckoo bird to train with the Titans.”

(I know Tim does temporarily end up with the Titans for a bit but that last line wrote itself)

Somewhere on the other side of the city, John Doe lays numbly in a hospital bed. Through the window he catches a glimpse of black and blue, bouncing and flipping, backlit by rolling thunder. He tries to yell, he thrashes in the hold of the wires piercing his skin, but his collapsed vocal cords let no sound escape.

When the nurses come rushing in, one of them is different. She is not a blurry face barely separate from the background, she is soft eyes and rough hands and a familiar accent. He doesn't understand all the words, but she says "safe" and "home" and he believes her. She calls him Jason and it's so foreign he almost doesn't recognize it.

Don't be embarrassed. I make anon asks a lot. Mainly just because sometimes I have a question but I don't really know how I should respond afterwards. Or sometimes I feel what I'm asking is stupid and if it is I don't have to carry the burden of everyone knowing I asked a dumb question.

SA2 Epilogue

So my partner @genesis-quoi 's birthday is coming up... And she happens to have written one of my favourite fanfics of all time.

SO I made an animatic for it! This takes place during chapter 2.

“Go for Oracle.” Babs said, answering the phone without looking away from the monitor. There was a long silence. “Who is this?”

“Babs…”

She paused. “Dick what’s wrong?”

“I don’t— Babs…” Dick’s voice was raspy. He sounded simultaneously haunted and so so hopeful. “I need you to look into a teenage John Doe who would have been checked into Gotham General at some point last year after being hit by a car.”

Babs frowned, rolling over to her laptop to open hospital records. “Why?”

“Please, I need to know first.”

“Okay Dick.” She replied softly. This was concerning. The last time she had heard Dick sound anything like this had been… “I have them. Your John Doe was checked in for car crash injuries, and then disappeared two months later with no warning. He was catatonic. I don’t understand how—”

Dick let out a horrible noise. It sounded like his soul was being torn from his body. “Oh god. Oh god. He— Oh god.”

“Dick, what’s happening?” She demanded quickly.

“Babs… Jason is alive.”

“What.” She hissed, freezing. “Dick what are you talking about?”

“We’ve confirmed it. He’s that John Doe. Apparently the reason he disappeared from the hospital is because Talia found him. She put him in the pit and then sent him to train with Slade. He brought Jason to the tower. Babs, our little brother is alive.”

Babs covered her mouth and sobbed.
