A few people were asking for a sketch process,
Tumblr media
Here’s the sketch of the quick thing I posted before.
That’s literally it, like it’s nothing special I promise.
Straight from this to lineart then colour 💀
Tumblr media
Here’s the final product for anyone who doesn’t know what I’m talking about or hasn’t seen the post :)

Page (4/14)
I wanted to share my process for my 14 page Nona comic, This got pretty long so the rest is under the cut!
First, I start by making a script, as I'm weeding through Nona I’m drawing immediate reactions. This way I don't have to keep track of action as well as dialogue. This is the most dialogue heavy page of the comic so this one has the most detailed panel break ups.
In this scene Alecto’s inner thoughts are my favorite part so I dedicated a lot of time figuring how to add them naturally. I especially love “The old man, Crux—the child Crux, barely one hundred years old”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once I have a rough, and I mean ROUGH thumbnail for the page I move on to creating a digital sketch.
Side note, you’ll notice I go back and forth from traditional to digital back to traditional. Having to fully redraw poses multiple times makes me really think about the action and what I want to include.
Thumbnailing is for figuring out panels. Sketching is for action and dialogue. I tend to show action and emotion over following all the rules of comic making. If you notice i break the 180 rule, but at the end of the day character interactions are more important to me.
Tumblr media
I redraw the sketch on comic paper in mechanical pencil. Again I don’t trace the digital work because I want the linework to stay loose. I just focus on lineweight and contrast at this step. The dialogue is written out first then I line everything else with my felt tip pen.
Tumblr media
I clean up the comic and replace the handwritten dialogue with a font I made out of my handwriting. This part is tedious but I really don't know how to skip it. My handwriting is too hard to read but I also need to make sure all the dialogue fits naturally, so that means doing it twice.
Tumblr media
My coloring process is really chaotic and can't be summed up in screenshots.
Crazy right? I am constantly adjusting, changing, and generally making a mess and then cleaning it up when I color. Often when my colors look off to me it's because I have a contrast problem, so I check it in greyscale.
If you want to know more I can share my brushes and techniques.
Tumblr media
And with that I’m done! And then I move on to the next page.

Do you have any general tips for people who want to start making comics based off of your experience doing Scarlet lady?
Like, how do you decide which background you draw and which you don't? How to decide which parts of the episode you will draw and which you won't? How do you plan everything before making the panels (from the script to thumbnailing to the final version and etc), Etc
I answered a question about ✨My Process✨ 4 years ago, so you can read about that here.
I usually use backgrounds for an establishing shot (so the audience knows where in the world the characters are) and if the perspective calls for one (no floating characters - if you can see their feet, they need to be standing on something). But usually if two characters are near each other and just talking, you don't need a background (especially in greyscale - then the panel can get muddled and hard to "read" visually).
Usually I'll skip action scenes just because I can't really draw them (or I'll condense them). And I tended to skip scenes that didn't add anything to my particular AU, or I implied that they happened just as they did in canon just so I could fast forward through them.
And the paneling is explained in the 4 year old post!

My Process for this illustration :D
Tumblr media
I wanted to do this in a seperate post, because not everybody might be interested in this, but here are my basic steps/my basic approach for this particular painting.
This is a J.C. Leyendecker study, so I used the leyendecker painting below as reference for the colours and the folds of the shirt.
The photo beside that was my pose reference. John is entirely my creation and the scratchy background is inspired by other leyendecker pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The intitial sketch for this was very rough, as you can see. John stayed a formless blob for quite a while, until I refined the sketch. I don't know if I succeeded with adding the horns. I'm not sure I like them. I certainly don't think I managed to capture the expression that John had in the sketch. It didn't translate into the painting in the end. I'm still happy with the result.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This took a little less than 5 hours from start to finish.
You can find a version without all my talking here.

So, I have this idea for a BuckTommy Fantasy/Royalty AU where Buck is royalty and Tommy is a dragon.
Maddie and Buck were from a kingdom that had fallen. The kingdom was on the brink of collapse before either of them were born, but the death of their brother, Daniel, sent their parents spiraling and the kingdom collapsed.
For years, the two fended for themselves in the chaos as they traveled the realms.
Buck had been impervious since the day he was born. His parents had tried to use blood magic on him in order to save his brother from death, but the spell hadn't worked the way his parents had expected - it had only made Buck invincible. Nothing could hurt Buck physically.
And Buck, at first, didn't know why he was the way he was. He spent the first eleven years of his life traveling aimlessly with his sister with no answer to his unique ability before they two were separated from one another.
Buck eventually found his way to Bobby and Athena's kingdom, where he was taken in as a knight rising through the ranks, then eventually a ward once his true identity was revealed.
The reason why Buck could not be hurt was revealed.
In this kingdom, Chimney's a knight as well as Hen and Eddie. Ravi is a ward from a flourishing kingdom, but also a squire to Buck. Karen is the court astronomer, of course. May and Harry are princess and prince. Harry's the cupbearer, listening in on the day-to-day of Athena's council, while May is training under the hand of the queen to eventually become hand herself, then queen one day.
Sometime in the past, Buck found out that his sister had escaped captivity from a prince who had taken her hostage. She had run away to Bobby and Athena's kingdom, hearing rumors about her little brother.
And.
And Maddie falls in love with Chimney. They fall in love with each other's patience and kindness.
They decide to marry.
And people from all over the land come to this wedding. Not just in Athena's domain, but from the far-flung corners of the realms. There to witness the wedding of Maddie and Chimney, but also because the court has three potential royals who might need suitors - May, Harry, and Buck.
Athena has no plans to marry off her children just yet, so a lot of those suitors narrow in on Buck - the Lost Prince Found.
Tommy is only there, though, to see his good friend Chimney get married.
Tommy is an infamous knight from the outer regions of Athena's lands. Chimney and Hen have all sorts of stories about their old friend.
But.
Rarely does he ever show his face at court.
Because.
Tommy is a dragon; a dragon who can shift into a human form when needed. And while most people don't know that, there is a stigma. There are rumors about it.
Tommy had convinced himself he was better off alone protecting the countryside. This was just a short trip to visit a good friend during an important moment in his life.
Then.
Suddenly.
A storm breaks out as Bobby and Athena are travelling back by ship for Maddie and Chimney's wedding. And Tommy has no choice - he, Buck, Chimney, Hen, and Eddie set out to save the people on that ship from the storm.
And Tommy has to transform. It's the middle of the night, so not a lot of people see the transformation, but he knows the rumors would be tenfold now.
That doesn't matter.
Tommy needs to save Athena and Bobby.
And that's how he first meets Buck. As a dragon. Elegantly moving through the disastrous hurricane off the coast to save the people Buck loves.
And Tommy's surprised by the warm reception he gets from the new knights - from Buck and Eddie.
He befriends them, even. They're Hen and Chimney's friends. Why wouldn't Tommy want to be friends with them too?
He's spending a lot of his time with Eddie at first. Practicing martial arts, hanging out with Eddie's son, talking about their pasts.
But.
But he keeps finding Buck - finding Evan. Wandering around. Trying to talk to him. And Tommy's curious.
Tommy's more than curious.
He's a bit lovestruck by the man. And he doesn't know why Evan keeps seeking him out. He doesn't know why they keep having the worst luck in planning to hang out.
But he wants to get to know Evan.
He wants something with Evan, even if he's not sure if he's allowed that; if he's even in the running as someone Evan would consider.
There are suitors at court, after all. Abigail Clark, Taylor Kelly, Ali, Natalia Dollenmeyer, Lucy Donato - all people who could be good for Evan. All people who could actually help Evan if he wants to marry not just for romance, but for the kingdom.
And what was Tommy? A lowborn dragon who fell in love with a human?
Tommy flirts along with any charming turn of phrase Evan sends his way, but he doesn't expect to be in the running. To be someone Evan wants.
Until.
It becomes clear that he could be. That Evan wants him.
And.
Tommy takes that chance. He takes that leap of faith. He kisses Evan.
And Evan kisses him back.
And maybe they don't pledge forever to each other; not yet. But they do go to Chimney and Maddie's wedding together. And they do start to court one another.

how i write poems:
step one: stare at a wall for three hours.
step two: despair
step three: write literally anything.
step four: hate it.
step five: post my trauma on the internet for all to see.
step six: repeat!

We Don't Gatekeep Art Resources | A Comprehensive List
Here's a list of some of the tools/sites I currently use or have used previously for works/studies. I'll separate it into Software/Utility, Reference, and 'Other' which will be just general things that could help you map out things for your experience with art. **[Free highlighted in pink, paid highlighted in green. Blue is variable/both. Prices Listed in USD]**
Software/Utility:
2D
Krita Painting app (PC) (my main digital art software on PC for 5+ yrs)
Clip Studio Paint [PC] [CSP 2.0+ allows for 3d modelling within the painting app and a lot of other cool features] [apparently allows up to 6 months free trial]
Procreate (12.99) [iPad/iPad Pro] (the GOAT)
Artstudio Pro [iPad/iPad Pro] (An alternative to Procreate if you enjoy the more traditional art app layout) -- I find this app handy when Procreate is lacking a feature I need, or vice versa. (you can easily transfer files between the two, but keep in mind Procreate's layer limit)
2D "Collaborative Painting/Drawing apps"
Magma Studio
Drawpile
Discord Whiteboard
Gartic Phone (Pretty decent for 2d animation practice, but has a hard limit on frames)
3D
Blender [3D Modelling, Sculpting + Layout] (PC)
Sculptris [PC] (it's an old unsupported version of Zbrush, but can help to get ideas out, and functions better than browser sculpting apps
Nomad Sculpt [iPad/iPad Pro] ($20) Works pretty well if you prefer a mobile setup, but it is a bit intense on the battery life and takes some getting used to
References + Study
Magic Poser [ PC and Mobile ] Has both free and paid versions, I've made do with just the lite version before
Artpose ($9.99) [Iphone + Steam]
Head Model Studio [IPhone] A 3D head, with both a basic blockout version for angles, and a paid version with more detail
Cubebrush [simply search "[keyword] pose reference pack"], they usually have good results + they frequently have sales!
Line of Action [Good for Gesture practice + daily sketching], also has other resources built in.
Quickposes Similar to Line of action, more geared toward anatomy
Drawabox | Perspective Fundamentals Improvement modules (Suggested by @taffingspy )
Sketchfab, this skull in particular is useful, but there is other models that can help you study anatomy as well.
Pinterest can be good, you just have to be careful, usually you're better off just finding reference pack if you have the money, sometimes certain creators have freebies as well
Artstation Marketplace can be decent [make sure to turn on the Aye-Eye filter so it doesn't feed you trash], a colleague of mine recommended this head model for practicing facial blocking, there is also this free version without lighting.
Local Art Museums [Unironically good for studying old "master work" if you're into that, or even just getting some inspiration]
Brushes + Other Useful software:
I personally have used both of these brush packs before making my own
(I actually don't know how to share my daily brush set because I frequently switch between Krita, Procreate, and ASP, but once I figure that out I'll be sure to do that lol)
Marc Brunet's Starter brush pack [Technically free but supporting him for this if you like it is ideal, there's some good brushes]
Dave Greco Brush Pack [$3]
Gumroad in general is a good place to find brushes and art resources. *Note; for Krita specifically, brush packs are a bit weird, so it may require you to find different packs, or import them in a particular way
PureRef [PC] - Reference Compiler/Moodboarding
VizRef ($3.99) [iPad] - Moodboarding/Reference Compiler
Artist Youtubers/Creators that helped me improve/guide me along as a self-taught artist from when I first started digital art to where I am today:
Proko
Marco Bucci
Sinix Design
Sycra
Hardy Fowler
Lighting Mentor
Winged Canvas
Moderndayjames
Swatches
Chommang_drawing
Marc Brunet (YTartschool)
+ Observing a lot of speedpaint art by people whose work I enjoy on social media/youtube, trying to dissect their processes
If you've gotten this far, first of all, congrats, you can read a lot, and second of all, thank you for reading and I hope this helps! I'll continue to come back and update this if I find any new resources in the future, or if my processes change :)
Much Love,
-Remidiy

process video! I normally paint in photoshop, but I used mostly procreate here for the recording functionality. just gotta finish the reverse shot with jaskier now!
(now please stop asking me if I'm an AI artist. and in general, please be kind when asking artists for process videos! drawing/painting isn’t inherently performative and not all artists are comfortable with sharing WIPs.)

Star #7/? complete! (One is not pictured because it is already sewn onto the dress bodice)
This star was pretty tricky to get done, not because it was any more difficult to cut or sew, but because I could not get a copy of Carol Doak's 50 Fabulous Paper-pieced Stars. I put it on hold on at my local library, only for the library to fall victim to a cyber attack while it was in transit LOL. I called around, and I have no idea where that book ended up. Who sends ransomware to a library??? They are notoriously under-funded. Whoever it was is undoubtedly a huge asshole because now people who rely on the public computers are SOL...but anywho, since I didn't want to buy the book only to use two patterns, I basically had to reverse engineer them using the power of geometry❤ and GIMP. I actually really enjoyed it, although it took much longer than I expected. I'd post them here, but idk if I'd be breaking some sort of copyright law 😅
Looking forward to finishing the next one too because they both have this very cool refracted look that I was jazzed about 🎷🎶

yes “god i hope so” was a top tier all-time moment on a tv show for me and I’m going to be thinking about it in the horniest way possible until i die, but also i’ve been slowly writing bucktommy parental trauma fic for the past two weeks and you cannot IMAGINE how much work that entire scene dialogue and blocking did to help carry its weight even more, i’m so excited, i love being right

Process Post
Hi everyone! Here's a process post on my previous Rolan painting study.
Time-lapse from Procreate above.
More details, inspo, references, and writing under the cut:
I haven't drawn or digitally painted in years but Baldur's Gate 3 got me drawing fanart, especially Rolan. I love his design and storyline so much. I draw him almost every day, whether as a warm-up sketch or full illustration - and I can see how much has changed from when I first started drawing him to how I draw him now. More importantly, it's crazy amazing to have found a community because of an NPC. Also, receiving all the love and support here has been crazy wonderful, I read all your reblog tags and they always make my day - thank you sm.
Tumblr media
Inspo / ref image board on left, my clean up sketch on right. Linework and inking are fun for me but I struggle with color, rendering, and digital painting. I find that referencing artists and images helps immensely when I paint, so I often collect images and combine them into a board. J. C. Leyendecker is a big inspo for me, especially his color, mark-making, and poses. I also ref a ton of in-game screenshots, the one above is from @ / emerald_witch9 on twitter. I use the iPad side-by-side window feature so I can look at my image board and Procreate at the same time.
I like painting in this style, but it does take me awhile, so I'm not sure how long I'll continue to paint this way. However, I think it'll help me develop a quicker and more personal sense of render style.
Lastly, here's a detail shot of my paint study because freckles hah.
