Con Air (1997)

Con Air defies traditional movie reviewing conventions. You can easily argue that it's bad. The premise is zany, Nicholas Cage's performance is bewildering, and sometimes it’s so over-the-top you’ve got to laugh. One must also consider the entertainment value, however. When it wants to be funny, it is, and the wide variety of action sequences will make your jaw drop. It may be bouncing off the walls in a straight jacket, but largely, that's the tone it's going for. Even if it isn’t, things come together nicely.

Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) is about to be released from prison after serving 8 years of a prison sentence for bogus charges. While being transferred, several high-profile super-criminals led by Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom (John Malkovich) highjack their transport plane. Refusing to let this collection of serial killers, rapists, psychotics, and megalomaniacs escape, Cameron stays aboard and, with the help of U.S. Marshal Vince Larkin (John Cusack), attempts to thwart their efforts to go free.

You can’t talk about Con Air without addressing Nicolas Cage. I don’t know what director Simon West was thinking. Cage is armed with two head-scratchers: a ridiculous mullet and a bad Louisiana accent. Neither are necessary and maintaining said accent appears to occupy so much of Cage’s mental capacity he struggles to emote in any scene.

The premise sounds like something from a DC comic book - in a good way. In fact, someone should rips this film off and substitutes Steve Buscemi’s character with the Joker, Danny Trejo’s with Killer Croc, and the rest of the cast with similarly colored supervillains. In most movies, you’ve got one, maybe two baddies with outlandish dialogue and memorable scenes. Here you get a buffet of them. Some you like, some you hate, all of them have your attention.

Sometimes, the thugs Cameron is forced against are bit too much, but once more, I find myself forgiving  the film because of the overall experience. When it comes to the action, it’s wall-to-wall with plenty of variety. As Cyrus and his followers make their escape, you'll be thrilled, wondering what explosion-laden location they’ll land in next. All realism is absent but – and I can’t emphasize this enough - you won’t care. It’s too much fun seeing everyone in these roles. Plus, once in a while, you just want to see a pile of human waste get the human waste beaten out of them by a hero that's basically a living cliché. Sometimes, that's just what the doctor called for. This is the kind of picture you show to your father and bond over. It’s a man’s movie with a lot of laughs. Some deliberate. John Cusack and many others have genuinely comedic dialogue. Other times, you howl at the movie’s expense... but not really? The point is the film delivers what you want to see.

To properly enjoy Con Air, you need to know exactly what you're getting into. At times it's like it was written by a committee of 13-year-olds hell-bent on making the most awesome Nicholas Cage movie without understanding how to properly use him. That’s also what makes it endearing. I’d call Con Air dumb fun, but that implies it's never genuinely good. (Unrated, Extended Cut on DVD, November 4, 2016)

Psych - Any Given Friday Night at 10PM, 9PM Central - January 30 2009 USA Network . . This episode features an homage to the 1979 Mean Joe Green - Have A Coke And A Smile commercial. Mykelti Williamson (Boomtown, Justified, Lethal Weapon) plays a football quarterback who gets good advice from the young Shawn Spencer, and gets the gameball in exchange. In the present he’s the coach of the same team again getting help from Shawn and Gus.  . . I found the commercial on YouTube and it’s weird. The kid forces his Coke on a sad Mean Joe Green, and then slinks away dejected when Mean Jow actually drinks his Coke. But then Mean Joe gives him some dirty laundry he can sell on eBay in 20 years or so. I think the message of the commercial is that you can only be happy if you have a Coke bottle in your hand. It’s not the giving that makes you happy, it’s the Coke bottle, full or empty. . . The Final Destination (2009)

It’s only fitting that the worst instalment of the Final Destination franchise be given the stupidest title. The Final Destination. Pfft. Give me a break.

When Nick O’Bannon (Bobby Campo) has a premonition at the speedway, he saves his friends and other bystanders from a horrific death. As the survivors are picked off one by one by a “random” chain of events, it becomes obvious that by saving these people, Nick interfered with Death’s plan.

The previous film was bad. This one’s even worse. To begin, we once again follow a new pool of characters meaning that we have to sit there twiddling our thumbs waiting for them to catch up to what we already know. If the characters were somewhat interesting, you might forgive the repetitive plot, but from frame one, half of the characters establish themselves as nothing more than meat for the grinder. Nick Zano plays Hunt, a character whose entire dialogue is composed of comments that establish him as a despicable douchebag. He stands absolutely no chance of surviving or even of displaying human emotion. Unfortunately, it takes forever for him to get sent to the grave. Why this obsession with making characters we don’t like? You know the filmmakers are trying to cash in on some schadenfreude, but this is supposed to be a horror movie, not a dark comedy! There’s no suspense whatsoever because of course, the Neo Nazi (Justin Welborn) isn’t going to make it past the 40-minute mark. I could’ve told you that without even seeing the film!

There’s hardly a plot here so the deaths are the only thing you can look forward to. Unfortunately, it’s 4 movies in and you can tell the people in charge have started running out of ideas. Some of these kills are downright ridiculous. I’ve seem more credible demises out of an “Itchy and Scratchy” cartoon; either that of the people in this horror universe are composed entirely of bags of meat and of blood. No bones or organs save for long lengths of intestine to decorate the streets and the onlookers’ faces.

This movie stood no chance. The big opening catastrophe in The misses the point of this franchise. Randomly avoiding a plane crash that kills all your friends is lucky. Dodging strategically thrown car engines, tires and rubble is cartoonish. Everyone in this universe would suddenly start believing in magic and prophecies after seeing the absurd chains of events that off people in this film.

The film is so desperate to keep the franchise going that about 2/3 of the way in, it re-starts. Nick has another vision detailing the death of the remaining survivors. It’d be funny if the film wasn’t so boring. The special effects aren’t even that good, guaranteeing the gore won't satisfy anyone. The best thing about The Final Destination is that my Playstation 3 is smart enough to recognize it as a truly idiotic title and the name Final Destination 4 popped up when I threw my Blu-ray into the machine.
