Rachika Nayar – Heaven Come Crashing : musiques romantiques et nébuleuses
Rachika Nayar demeure fidèle au label NNA de sa première production Our Hands Against The Dusk (2021).

Tim Clarke’s 2022: Light at the end of the tunnel?
Tumblr media
The Smile photo by Alex Lake
I don’t want to curse anyone by saying it out loud, but could 2022 be the turning point after a truly horrendous couple of years? For me, the very fact that two-fifths of Radiohead put out an excellent album already makes this year notable. However, I was also lucky enough to get great new albums by favorites Big Thief, Dry Cleaning, and Aldous Harding. Plus, this year I’ve seen more live music than the previous two years combined. Here’s to 2023 continuing this upward trajectory of more great music, both recorded and live.
1. The Smile — A Light For Attracting Attention (XL)
youtube
Any Radiohead-related project is guaranteed to pique my interest, but one involving Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood? Having said that, even I was surprised at just how good A Light For Attracting Attention turned out. Veering from spectral balladry to twitchy post-punk, there’s not only variety here, but also a satisfying narrative arc, some great playing from all three members, plus the exciting prospect of another Smile album in the near future.
2. Big Thief — Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You (4AD)
Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You by Big Thief
After giving us two albums in 2019, Big Thief returned with a double album of surprising diversity and consistently high quality. At its best (“Little Things,” “Sparrow,” “Simulation Swarm”), DNWMIBIY feels like Big Thief could go anywhere from here, and if the rumors are true, there are as many more songs on the cutting-room floor as made it onto this 20-track monster. Here’s to another Big Thief album in 2023.
 3. Dry Cleaning — Stumpwork (4AD)
youtube
Dry Cleaning’s second album in two years catches this inimitable London band on a roll. There’s enough musical evolution from last year’s New Long Leg to ensure this isn’t just more of the same, though Florence Shaw’s lyrics and delivery are as funny as ever. Plus, Tom Dowse continues to be one of the most inventive and tuneful electric guitarists of recent years.
 4. Black Country, New Road — Ants from Up There (Ninja Tune)
Ants From Up There by Black Country, New Road
Much like Bowie passing away soon after the release of Blackstar, Isaac Wood leaving Black Country, New Road soon after the release of Ants from Up There is the kind of artistic move that feels preordained. This is a massive, ridiculous, intricate, and deeply moving album, and one that I doubt the remaining members of the band will top in Wood’s absence.
5. Stephen Becker — A Calm That Shifts (NNA Tapes)
youtube
Apparently, Stephen Becker worked on his solo debut for years between playing in countless other bands — and you can hear it. A Calm That Shifts is the kind of debut that spotlights a talent who has been quietly working in the margins of other people’s music for a long time, refining his craft. This is the kind of expansive folk-pop that has the songs, subtlety, and depth to slowly win you over.
 6. billy woods — Aethiopes (Backwoodz Studioz)
Aethiopes by billy woods
It’s rare I listen to hip-hop at all, let alone hear an album that blows me away, but getting billy woods’ Aethiopes in the Mid-Year Exchange was a revelation. I haven’t been this excited about a hip-hop album since Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein, way back in 2001. On Aethiopes, woods paints vivid pictures of urban desolation, set to producer Preservation’s woozy patchwork of old blues and jazz samples.
7. Aldous Harding — Warm Chris (4AD)
youtube
It’s hard to know how to take Aldous Harding’s shapeshifting vocal persona. On Warm Chris she’s more playful yet more seriously committed than ever to all the roles in her songwriting, making for some deliciously disorientating pop music. Perhaps not as consistent as her last full-length, Designer, but certainly as charming.
 8. Living Hour — Someday is Today (Next Door)
youtube
Though it includes my favorite song of the year in “Feelings Meeting,” Living Hour’s third album has plenty of other great songs. “Feelings Meeting” stands out as a thrilling shoegaze masterstroke, while most of the rest of the record is the kind of narcotized dream-pop Beach House do so well.
 9. Daniel Rossen — You Belong There (Warp)
You Belong There by Daniel Rossen
God knows when we’ll next get another Grizzly Bear record. Until then, Daniel Rossen’s solo debut will more than suffice. On You Belong There, his guitar playing is immaculate, and he doesn’t spare any indulgence on the arrangements either, layering instruments liberally across these stridently morose compositions.
10. Skullcrusher — Quiet the Room (Secretly Canadian)
Quiet the Room by Skullcrusher
It’s been a long time since I’ve heard an album playing in a record store full stop, let alone one that’s prompted me to ask at the desk what’s playing on the turntable. So it was with Skullcrusher. It immediately reminded me of Grouper, but less shy and less smothered in hazy melancholy. Quiet the Room is still a deeply introverted record, but one whose sounds are unafraid to shine, mainly thanks to Big Thief producer Andrew Sarlo’s sterling job at the desk.
Another excellent ten (in alphabetical order):
Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin — Ghosted (Drag City)
Ellen Arkbro & Johan Graden — I get along without you very well (Thrill Jockey)
Disassembler — A Wave From A Shore (Western Vinyl)
Goon — Hour of Green Evening (Demode)
Gwenno — Tresor (Heavenly)
Horse Lords — Comradely Objects (RVNG Intl.)
Cate Le Bon — Pompeii (Mexican Summer)
Market — The Consistent Brutal Bullshit Gong (Western Vinyl)
Shearwater — The Great Awakening (Polyborus)
Winged Wheel — No Island (12XU)

Brooklyn, NY -- Rachika Nayar will be releasing her second full length Heaven Come Crashing on August 26 via NNA Tapes. This week, she shared the lead single featuring maria bc. The epic track spans over 5 minutes long and the beauty in this track really lies in the cinematic build of the track. The explosiveness of the layers upon layers of instrumental creates a cosmic impact, sweeping listeners into Rachika Nayar’s sonic world. “Heaven Come Crashing” is just as the title suggests and you’ll find yourself immersed amongst the stars.

10/11/21.
I learned about Macie Stewart's "Mouth Full of Glass" because Humphreys & Keen (Able Tasmans) bought it. Frankly, I learn about many great releases from the people I follow on Bandcamp.
Macie Stewart (Chicago, Illinois) is one-half of the band OHMME, who have released great work via Joyful Noise Recordings.
This album reminds me of something that might be released by NNA Tapes (Ryan Power). It also makes me think of one of my favorite unsung bands - Busman's Holiday.
This is released by Orindal Records (Chicago) who have also released works by Dear Nora among others.

Release Day Picks: 5/22/20
We are late but we are here. Ten releases from last week that are worth your time. Regular posting will resume next week.
Andrea Cortez - The Secret Songs of Plants (Aural Canyon)
- One of two great releases out on Aural Canyon last week. Andrea Cortez is a music therapist who “designs improvisations and compositions with harp, pedal effects and plant generated music.” The Secret Songs of Plants is a soothing introduction to Cortez’s work.
https://auralcanyonmusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-secret-song-of-plants
Harrington, Gustin & Zahn - Tura Lura (Cascine)
- Coming completely off the radar for me, Tura Lura is a warm instrumental album with elements of jazz and jam. A late night gem of a listen and one I will be coming back to a lot.
https://harringtongustinzahn.bandcamp.com/album/tura-lura
Mary Lattimore & Mac McCaughan - AVL (Self-Released)
- Another mesmerizing release from Mary Lattimore (harp & effects) & Mac McCaughan (synthesizers & sampling) of Superchunk. AVL is a recording from a live performance by the duo in Lattimore’s hometown of Asheville, NC.
https://marylattimoremacmccaughan.bandcamp.com/album/avl
Matthewdavid's Mindflight - Care Tracts (Leaving)
- Care Tracts comes right on the heels of Matthewdavid’s recent Umor Rex release, Experimental Bliss. Two different ambient journeys from the artist, both worth embarking on.
https://matthewdavidmcq.bandcamp.com/album/care-tracts
More Eaze - Towards A Plane (Aural Canyon)
- The second great Aural Canyon release of the week is the second great More Eaze release of 2020. Towards A Plane follows Mari, released in April on Orange Milk. Mari was an experimental pop thrill ride but Towards A Plane is an ambient emo jazz comedown. Yet another captivating release from More Eaze.
https://auralcanyonmusic.bandcamp.com/album/towards-a-plane
Sunmoonstar - Tirra Lirra (Self-Released)
- A compilation of sorts including released and unreleased material but a new album from Sunmoonstar is always something to cherish. Tirra Lirra is a lovely collection of dreamy ambient gems.
https://sunmoonstar.bandcamp.com/album/tirra-lirra
TALsounds - Acquiesce (NNA Tapes)
- TALsounds takes you on another cosmic ambient trip and Acquiesce might be her most complete and rewarding work yet.
https://talsounds.bandcamp.com/album/acquiesce
Vanessa Amara - Poses (Posh Isolation)
- Vanessa Amara’s Manos was one of my favorite albums of 2018 but Poses is something completely different. 12 songs in 18 minutes, Poses feels like a work in progress, a collection of pieces that feel in motion and alive still. Quite the misdirection release from the Danish trio.
https://vanessaamara-poshisolation.bandcamp.com/album/poses
Ryley Walker - Mirror of the Lowlands (Self-Released)
- Walker has been busy during the quarantine. He follows up his recent brilliant work with Brett Naucke with another fine instrumental EP that is a bit more true to his usual style.
https://ryleywalker.bandcamp.com/album/mirror-of-the-lowlands-ep
Woods - Strange To Explain (Woodsist)
It’s been four years since the last Woods full-length album and with spring here and summer on the horizon, Strange To Explain arrives just in time for beach & porch listening.

you jump around, now. scrubbing through several ten-second clips of first mate rojas giving a thumbs up, a middle finger, an okay sign... different iterations of him saying he’s fine or hungry or cold.
there’s one that you bookmark for later where it looks like he’s got a lot to say about his first space walk because, while you definitely want to watch it, you’re getting impatient to find out more about the incident that captain atlas was reticent to speak of in her interviews. that, and it’s nearly time for lunch. your stomach protests distractingly as you select a log just about a year in  —  one more, you think. then lunch.

❝ -nna know how i’m feelin’, doc? ❞   the camera alights on his chest as he’s mid-argument with someone off screen. the setting, this time, is different ( brighter, more sterile ) and when red drops into the frame it is with all but a growl.   ❝ i’m fuck- ❞
              ❝ language! ❞
the bridge of his nose looks like it’s about to be pinched off his face.   ❝ i am... annoyed, ❞   he grinds out, glaring daggers off camera, then, presumably at virgil.   ❝ because i almost lost my f- bloody ankle to a roomba with a dozen f-goddamn knives taped to it. ❞   there’s a tense moment where it seems both men are engaged in a staring contest but the silence is broken by a chuckle from the doctor that fades as he moves further away and max turns his attention back to his recording.   ❝ a knife-roomba! ❞   tone laden with exasperation, now. he sighs.
❝ you an’ ghosts are lucky i didn’t shoot it into space, kane, ❞   he calls, only to be overruled by a discordant chorus of voices piping up from several directions. red just rolls his eyes before meeting the camera’s lens like he’s on one of those goofy "faux-reality” tv shows from a century ago. apparently he’s the minority in thinking this was a poor idea.   ❝ unbe-fucking-lievable... ❞
❝ goddammit, red, what did i just say? ❞   the video ends just after a grin stretches its way across max’s face at doctor cadriela’s reprimand — laughter building but not yet spilt before the screen goes blank.

Neil Morris, speaking to Alan Lomax in 1959:
“Well, when I was just a small boy, Old Uncle Milt Oldfield…Billy Oldfield, the Congressman from Arkansas for so long, it is his father. He and my father are awfully close friends. And they were discussing music. They were music teachers both of them.
“And uh, and they said, dad did and Uncle Milt sanctioned what he said, that MUSIC HAD NO END. That you could learn all the other guy [or girl] learned, and after you got that done they would then, something else would crop up. That uh, that you, that was the reason why that uh, music advanced. That’s why that you would get a better music in one generation maybe that is, uh, IT WOULD FIT THE TIMES IN WHICH THEY LIVED.”
[Lomax: “What about music on the grapevine?”]
“Welllll, they said that MUSIC GREW LIKE THE GRAPEVINE THAT IS NEVER PRUNED. That each year it’d…it’d put on a little bit more. That was what they said, now, about it. Any further questions?”’

klank.ist
Klank.ist is founded by music composer Eda Er, visual artist Mertcan Seker. After Mertcan's separation the collective grew rapidly with the participations of dancer and choreographer Ekin Tunceli who coordinated the klank.ist impro events, and music composer Asli Kobaner. Currently, klank.ist continues to carry out their projects with Er and Kobaner's artistic direction and coordination. Collaborations are realized through distinguished artists/academics such as Intercultural Music curator Eren Arin and regular collaborator Jeremy Woodruff.Klank.ist is a group which tries to expand its limits in transdisciplinary genres. We perform experiments between audio-visual disciplines and design transmedial compositions both musically and visually. We collaborate with a vast number of disciplines such as dance, theater, music, architecture, production design. https://en.klank.ist/
Hazal Elif Yalvaç
Born and raised in Turkey, Elif (née Hazal Elif Yalvaç) grew up surrounded by a wide range of music. At an early age, she was fascinated as much by sound as by music, and she picked up the guitar.Following her BA degree in Translation and Interpreting from Istanbul University, Elif earned her masters in Sonic Arts from Istanbul Technical University (MIAM). She has presented compositions and performed in Turkey and across Europe, most notably at Secret Garden Party (UK) in 2016, as well as throughout Nordic countries, particularly in Iceland. Her debut EP CloudScapes was self-released in July 2016, and her debut LP, L’appel du Vide, was released by UK label Curated Doom in November 2018. Her latest album Mountains Become Stepping Stones was released by the USA-based label NNA Tapes on December 4, 2020. The album received international acclaim, including reviews on the Guardian, The Wire, and Electronic Sound Magazine UK.Elif’s compositions embrace opposites: microsound glitches and slow builds; celestial beauty and abrasive energy. Her songs are created using a vast array of instruments, including guitar, synthesizers, and Game Boy, as well as her own software sound design tools and field recordings. Inspired by computer game audio, Elif extensively studied chip music as part of her master’s thesis, entitled “Creating Music ‘Inside The Box’: Do Chiptune’s Limitations Have Aesthetic and Creative Value?”.Endorsed by Arts Council England, Elif Yalvaç is currently based in the UK with a Global Talent Visa.

Marja Ahti — Vegetal Negatives (Hallow Ground)
Tumblr media
MARJA AHTI – Vegetal Negatives by Marja Ahti
Vegetal Negatives takes inspiration from René Daumal’s “On pataphotograms,” an essay which plays with the idea of understanding natural forms as separate. A pataphysicist, Daumal states: “for each animal form there exists a corresponding vegetal form. The man who would find his vegetal negative and unite with it would restore the integrity of the cosmos.” Throughout Vegetal Negatives, Finnish composer Marja Ahti inverts tones of fields recordings and synthesizers to complement one another, creating a series of glistening symbiotic associations.
Ahti has been a prominent musician in the Finnish scene for close to ten years. As Tsembla, Ahti combines field recordings and synthesis; on her last release, The Hole in the Landscape on NNA Tapes, Japanese field recordings from cross weave with sparse, rhythmic electronics that seem discretely guided by lurching pulses. As a part of the electronic psych trio Kemialliset Ystävät, led by Jan Anderzén, Ahti contributes to a churning stew of tones and rhythms, certainly free form but tethered by a sense of meter.
With her first album under her own name, Ahti doesn’t concern the various trajectories of her compositions with meeting a meter in attempt to make them more sensible or palatable, rather she plays into narratives the she draws from the tones themselves. Marja uses a similar instrumentation as in her past projects: field recordings, Buchla and ARP synths, harmonium, and electronic feedback. Rather than latching this instrumentation onto a beat or rhythmic backbone, Ahti finely selects, curates, and processes each component allowing their reverberations and tones to reflect off one another.
Four compositions in total, each one conjures its own sensation, but all juxtapose processed or unprocessed field recordings with filtered synthesizer. “Coastal Inversion” follows the sounds of a coastline, from the gurgling waves or distant bells to the sounds of stretching floor boards of a nearby boat with items rolling across its cockpit lead into a cast of purring synthesizers. Ahti skillfully confuses the two sets of sounds; the synthesizers’ fluxing frequencies mimic the effect that a creaking floorboard has in your ear. And “Chora” ends the album with a chorus of wheezing tones which leads into an indistinguishable recorded voice surrounded by dull, arrhythmic thuds and something that could just as easily be scratching of the tweeting of a bird.
The types of traversing reveries this travelogue-like approach lays out coerces you into a fluid understanding of each sound’s origin, often placing you at acute intersections of multiple sound-specific areas. The pace of each piece is slow and deliberate, nothing is forced; it’s like a walk through a vibrant garden, allowing time to perceive intentional and unintentional details, sharpening its color and character. Much like the work of Annea Lockwood, Ahti displays a fascination of sound and a patience to hear each one out.

Brooklyn, NY -- OHYUNG, the experimental and political rap project of Robert Ouyang Rusli, will be releasing their new record Imagine Naked! on April 22 via NNA Tapes. This week, they shared the first peek into the album with “symphonies sweeping!”. There’s a sweet feeling of surrender to this experimental track that instantly puts listeners at ease. From the swirls of sound to the serenity that oozes through every layer, “symphonies sweeping!” is a meditative sonic journey that spans nearly 6.5 minutes long.
OHYUNG’s gentleness in crafting the track is similar to a blanketed warmth, like being enveloped in a cocoon of love. While the track maintains an ethereal calm, it certainly evokes an emotional exodus in its softness. “symphonies sweeping!” is absolutely stunning in every crevice and lush layer.
Each song on Imagine Naked! is titled after t. tran le’s poem, “vegetalscape.”
