No way they just added a “reels” tab on mobile…

What’s funny is they’re just showing video posts on it but only showing the video… but so many of the video posts have video as “context” with the full body of the post being paragraphs and paragraphs talking about the contents… the UI of the reel/tiktok Big Video Tiny Everything Else only works when your website fosters a behavior of just scroll past a majority of videos because the videos are all there is. But the whole point of tumblr is that… there’s more to it… why does staff want to add a reels section when that undermines tumblr’s appeal

#which the article doesn't mention at all of course #look. i can only speak to 1) math instruction 2) on the elementary school level #and middle school level #and only in the districts ive worked with #but ive said this before and I'll say it again. the current way math is taught has the same problems that balanced literacy did #kids who are naturally good at math will figure it out no matter how its taught #in fact they probably ARE benefiting a lot from being exposed a variety of strategies and conceptual thinking #the sort of stuff that would typically be reserved for a pull-out gifted/discovery/links class #but the kids who struggle with math? this does NOT help them #they dont just 'pick up' addition and multiplication facts #the ~more conceptual~ strategies dont actually lead to more conceptual understanding for them. its just a different (more complicated!)#algorithm for them to memorize #and because it doesn't come easily to them #they aren't given the necessary practice (which yes. involves repetition!!) to master any strategy #kids who can't struggle to make big conceptual leaps shouldn't be denied access to basic math skills #and i will die on the hill of 'its easier to think about complex probel #*problems and think conceptually if you aren't devoting mental resources to trying to figure out 8*7 by repeated addition

#venus.txt #be real. the biggest unique problems i see there are self-directed fatphobia disguised as 'being healthy' and how the aggressively #algorithmic nature of the app affects peoples perception of real life #and a good bit of overconsumption (but most of what ends up on my fyp related to that is ppl denouncing it)#people arent like. illiterate and unfunny and inconsiderate and mean and brain dead by default #just because they use an extremely popular social media app #obviously i cant (and wouldnt try to) speak for the entire userbase. its called a 'for you page' for a reason #but i dont think its fair to look at the problems something has and think #'everyone who uses that is lesser than me. im too smart to fall into that trap'#some comparisons that come to mind are cults and propaganda. you are not immune (to the algorithm)

#kee speaks #i don't even know where this channel came from but it showed up on my recommendations last night and now it's my entire youtube algorithm #if you like horror or true crime you might find it interesting #there's a whole series on people who have died while spelunking or deep sea diving #or people who have had to survive on deserted islands #(like people who lived on basically a sand bar?? for 15 YEARS?? what the fuck??)#most of the stuff i've listened to today are essentially people vs nature #and one video was about to veer into industrial accidents and that was too much for me #ALSO: the narrator is like really descriptive?? Like some of the incidents he talks about is almost like listening to #someone's first hand account or as though you're listening to a written story #if that makes sense #he's very detailed #and if he's talking about an image that is shown on screen that is specifically relevant #he'll say 'for those listening only' and then describe the photo #and it's fantastic
