Now, it’s hard to imagine life without one. This kind of skepticism is natural, and it’s the same hesitation we see today with new technologies like Bitcoin.

New technologies often challenge our comfort zones, and while it’s easy to resist them, doing so can mean missing out on major opportunities. Bitcoin is a perfect example. It’s still widely misunderstood, but just like smartphones and the internet, it’s poised to become an integral part of our future.

=  Europe has recorded the three hottest years and ten warmest years since 2007.

= Damage caused by weather anomalies in Europe in 2023 reached €13.4 billion, with over 80% of this sum attributed to flood damage.

= An estimated 1.6 million people have been affected by floods in Europe.

= The number of people in Europe who have died from extreme heat has increased by almost 30% over the last 20 years.

= 2023 set a record for the number of extremely hot days when air temperatures exceeded 46°C, causing "heat stress" in many people.

= In 2023, wildfires in Europe scorched an area comparable in size to London, Paris, and Berlin combined.

= Over the past two years, glaciers on the mountain peaks of the Alps have lost about 10% of their remaining volume.

The consequences of global climate change are becoming increasingly evident everywhere, and Europe is no exception. ALLATRA scientists know how we can prevent a global climate catastrophe.

My grandma asks for my help when using her computer/phone all the time. These are my top tips! for helping your grandparents (or anyone). I am not an IT person and all my expertise comes from clicking things until they work

Accept the fact that your grandparent will tell people you are very good with computers because you minimized a YouTube video. Just roll with it

Computers didn't move to personal sizes until she was getting to middle age. I would guess anyone over the age of 70 has had the same experience. This means that they haven't grown up using computers, so keep that in mind when helping

The early computers really could be ruined because you clicked the wrong button. Understand that your grandparent is not "just clicking things" because they are afraid of destroying their computer

Panic is the biggest cause of mistakes. Half the time I can just ask my grandma to show me what she did. It turns out she just didn't read the popup or stopped as soon as there was text she didn't expect

If you can do so gently/subtly, ask the person to show you what they did or to read what is showing up

We grew up with computer-based lingo. Never assume the person you are working with did too

This is especially important when you cannot figure out why the person would be confused by the instructions. My grandma didn't know what a browser was, that Google Docs is basically Word, or that her PC is literally plugged into the wifi. Ask and/or explain along the way

Age affects dexterity in a huge way. My grandma has trouble double-clicking, typing on her phone, and swiping up from the bottom of her phone. It may take some thinking to find a way your person can do something that is easy for your young fingers

Judge if something is worth the tutorial. My grandma saw me use voice-to-text one day and really wanted to learn. It sounded like a great idea but she struggles to answer calls without hanging up. I just told her it was something only very new phones could do

On the other hand, she's great with her clock app? The calendar took some learning but now she loves it

I don't know jack about printers. I can turn them off and on and change the ink if I'm following instructions. If your pupil is trying to get you to fix the printer, try turning it off and back on again. If that doesn't work, try opening a drawer and pushing some buttons before returning it to normal and saying it is beyond your expertise. Sometimes they will hire a professional, sometimes they will just buy a new printer, sometimes this is just the broken printer they will live with

You can do this for just about anything. Sometimes the issue is more complicated but if you tell the person that immediately, they won't believe you. Open up settings, click to different places, close it down and tell them you've done all you can do. See above for how they might handle that

If something does go wrong, it is not your fault. The very lack of computer savvy that leads to 6,000 unread emails is the lack that leads to getting hacked

In a similar vein, the same panic that leads to not being able to get past a popup can catch you too. Try to take deep breaths and remind yourself that this isn't the end of the world

If there is any possible way that you can connect your grandparent to an IT person you know, do so. They don't have to be friends. Just having someone that you can call that your person also knows will make them more comfortable getting help for serious issues

Never ever ever yell at or belittle the person asking you for help. For many of them, asking takes a lot of courage. Be patient, answer questions, and let them take notes. This will not be a speedy process. If something is a repeated issue, see about writing down notes yourself and putting them somewhere easily accessible (not on a device)
