I think fun is underrated as, like, one of the fundamental purposes of human existence. It's good that we have fun. We are a playful species; it is good for us to play games, to be invested in games, to channel our energy into games and to be rewarded for that with strong social bonds, relaxation, a sense of identity, etc., etc.

Sports provide that, and they do it well, but American football is, in the U.S. anyway, probably the preeminent sport, and the sense of joy and connection that football provides is real and meaningful. I also think it's genuinely good for a sense of tribal identity to be channeled into sports and to become a thing that is at least partially sequestered within that area, because I think that satisfies our urge for tribal identification without turning it to destructive political ends.

I am admittedly finding it challenging to think of things that are good about football which are not equally good for similar sports. Um. There's a lot of down time in football, which means more time for bathroom breaks when compared to soccer, I guess? But it's not as slow-moving as baseball, which can be downright soporific. It is probably safer than similar games played without protective equipment, like rugby. And the NCAA is now required to allow college football players to be compensated, which I think is a very good thing!

My IRL friends will tell you, I have hated that man for a VERY long time (I get overly passionate about football lol) and I have NOT enjoyed having to see his gross face everywhere this season.

Literally, I don't give a shit who Taylor Swift dates BUT I hate Travis Kelce from a sports perspective and have for YEARS. (Also I love how everyone has just FORGOTTEN about that disgusting Catching Kelce show he did, like that shit was so dehumanizing) I think he's obnoxious and not nearly as good as they try and claim he is (the man is a fucking glorified oversized wide receiver maybe actually block someone and he can join the TE discussion)

I grew up during the height of the Patriots Dynasty and say what you want about them but KC will NEVER be able to touch the Brady / Gronk legacy. Like KC fans / Swifties can say what you want, but if you break down his stats compared to other top TEs he's not nearly as impressive as we're being told he is.

I also used to know a guy that now plays for the 49ers, so I have hoped on that bandwagon this season and have really enjoyed watching them play. So, I will be very enthusiastically rooting for them, hopefully they won't let us down!

Remember The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock? The movie showed how a kid who had an extremely rough upbringing got help from the family of a school friend, found success in football and ultimately ended up being adopted by the family. Turns out he was never adopted.

Michael Oher says that he was tricked by the Tuohy family into signing documents that made them his conservators. Since he was already 18 at the time the family told him, “that it means pretty much the exact same thing as 'adoptive parents,' but that the laws were just written in a way that took [his] age into account.”

Oher also says that papers were signed so that his story and likeness were given away for free to use in The Blind Side. He also never got a single royalty check for the hugely successful, Oscar nominated film in the 14 years since its release.
