#Night of Hunters

my vinyl 'classical' wishlist of two - Tori Amos' stunning work, Night of Hunters, which reinterprets traditional classical pieces and adds lyrics, is the album I always wants her to make from the moment I became a fan. And boy she did not disappoint with this album. The first time I heard that STUNNING orchestral bridge on "Star Whisperer," I wept at the sheer beauty of it. "Fearlessness" is a song so complete, so structurally and lyrically perfect, that it shares rarefied air with some of the very best of Tori's catalog: On part with a "Talula" or an "i i e e e" in that listening to it feels like such a completely nourishing song-listening experience. The way "Your Ghost" flows into "Edge of the Moon?" Absolutely sublime.

Beth Gibbons has maybe one of my favorite voices in all of music. I've talked about this Gorecki symphony and Beth singing it at length on my blog, but I was reminded of the second movement again on Holocaust Remembrance Day the other day. The aching sorrow of mother separated from child threads through each movement, and no conveys agony in her voice better than Beth Gibbons: who cares if she is not a soprano, as the symphony calls for? She sounds like a weeping mother, wailing in the night. Beth is one of those vocalists who can make you cry, can make the hairs on your arms stand on end, can make you feel terrified, can make you feel fond. If I could sing like anyone in the world, I would love to be able to sing like her.

Speaking of classical music made approachable, happy 12th anniversary to Tori Amos' Night of Hunters, a song cycle album based on classical pieces! Here's my favourite track from the album, Star Whisperer, based on a movement from Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata in A major.

Happy Birthday, Night Of Hunters!! Such a departure from Tori’s alternative records, yet it still showcases her virtuosity in a way we had never heard before. Star Whisperer always reminds me of that thing Tori has said about classical composers being the rock stars of their day-because the middle section of the song is so Rock & Roll! Battle Of Trees, the song Night Of Hunters, and Carry are perfect for Fall-there’s definitely something Pagan about BOT and NOH- they bring to mind and the ear a different time. I love the bluesy drape of Job’s Coffin-“sister, it’s time to bring it back online/you must outcreate that destructive tendency” are two of my favorite lyrics from the whole record. Star Whisperer and Edge of The Moon are sisters because of their varied structures/tempos. This record breathes through the use of the quartet-the bow strokes, the sound of the exhales that power the clarinet, and as always Tori’s pedal work gives each song a forward movement that literally sings. She’s also yet another example of Tori experimenting and hitting it out of the park. Happy Birthday, Baby!

I finally got Night of Hunters on vinyl and it's fucking stunning

whoever said classical is where vinyl really shines was right, the instrumental bridge in "Star Whisperer" changed my fucking life on vinyl

I am a Night of Hunters apologist forever, I was asking for that album fifteen years before she made it, I was all "Tori Amos should do an album where she writes lyrics to classical songs" and then she fucking did it
