NIGHTBREED (1990)
Oh boy, do I hate Dr. Decker. It's funny, because the original reason I watched this film is because I was so intrigued by his mask. I thought thus was going to be something like Halloween or Friday tye 13th. Boy, was I pleasantly wrong. Don't get me wrong, I love movies focused on a masked slasher, but having a film mainly focused on friendly beasts just living their life is so much cooler. There's so much world building in this film without even having that much explained vocally. Clive barker SHOWS us what Midian is and what it's about without all the unnecessary dialogue. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a Clive Barker fan. The costume and makeup designs on these freaks were amazing. I loved how each character had an entirely different look and how they were able to look both intimidating and soft. I also enjoyed the overall message of the film. Maybe the ones who look like monsters aren't really monsters at all. In fact, the monsters are usually the ones who look most normal. It was a nice commentary on race, queerness, and disability and how we as a society tend to at best exclude them and, at worst, massacre them.

Was sitting there watching Nightbreed tonight (a movie introduced to me by my dad when I was a kid and I LOVED it then) and then thinking about like a year ago when he was all like "why are you pretending like you're goth and being a fake satanist and all that?!" and I'm like ????????????

SUMMARY: A troubled young man is drawn to a mythical place called Midian where a variety of friendly monsters are hiding from humanity. Meanwhile, a sadistic serial killer is looking for a patsy.
The mod hasn’t seen this movie but does love the vibe of a Clive Barker film so might check it out.
