Best shot I was able to get of Jupiter (and some of its moons) tonight with the super zoom camera! Really need to get a telescope eventually to get better space shots, but regardless, was glad it was clear tonight to be able to see Jupiter the closest & brightest it will be to Earth for the next 107 years!

Red-tailed Hawk - Februay 2024 This magnificent Red-tailed Hawk was sitting on a streetlight over the bike trail in the Mission Valley subdivision of Casa Grande. That trail is right at the edge of town so there is a lot of open area for something with hawk-like eyes to survey. His eye and the tearing hook on the end of his beak are very visible in this image. A side note: This was the last image which I took with my most recent Nikon Coolpix P500. I carry the P500 as I bike because I have damaged several of them either by wiping out my bike or just sweating heavily on them, so I really don’t want to risk my P900 or, for sure, my D7100. One of the buttons had fallen off the camera a week or so earlier and I was hoping that it wouldn’t cause major problems. It finally did. Just after this shot, the camera shut itself off never to work again. I turned to eBay for a replacement. These cameras are relatively cheap now that they are considered obsolete and you can get a good used one for forty to sixty dollars. I bought one that looked good and got REALLY lucky. Someone (an “older” woman, younger than me) had won it in a contest in 2019. I don’t know whether she was not interested in photos or just used her phone, but when I got it, there had only been 14 images taken with it and they were all still on the memory card. One was her holding the certificate showing that she was the winner. The images were dated from early 2019. The camera is in like-new condition. Hopefully it will be providing me many good images over the next few years. MWM

Why the fuck are you trying to take pictures of the moon with a smartphone? Real cameras are cheaper.

I have a Nikon Coolpix P900 that's a point-and-shoot camera with 83x optical zoom (4.3 - 357mm) and it was maybe like $700 CAD when I got it like 6 years ago. It's cheaper than a DSLR since lenses are insanely expensive, but like. If you're that committed to moon pics, why are you using a god damn phone?

i just got a secondhand camera (nikon coolpix p900) with good zoom for bird photography and here are my best shots so far! this is a male bullock's oriole (Icterus bullockii), a species of blackbird native to western north america. they eat insects, fruit (mainly berries), and nectar, which i managed to capture in the last photo! they're often found in riparian wildlife corridors, which is exactly the environment where i found this little guy. he's also a new lifer for me! overall very exciting given i was only birding for about 30 minutes!

So I've made a decision:

I'm in a really bad way financially so I am going to be selling a few things.

1. Nikon Coolpix P900 in Very Good condition. Only used maybe a dozen times. Clean, cared for, all pieces included. Will include carrying bag.

2. Canon EOS Rebel XS in Good condition. Lightly used. Clean and cared for. All pieces included. Will also include a Canon 75-300mm f/4 - 5.6 telephoto lens (or available separately).

3. Samsung 14in flat screen TV. Good condition. Was used when I was dorming, but then I upgraded to a bigger TV so it still works I just don't have room for it. Remote included. (Tho this is gonna be local pickup only because shipping a whole TV sounds like a bad idea.)

I'll miss the cameras but I'm really in a bad way financially and have been having a hard time trying to dig myself out of the hole. So yeah. I'm going to post them on FB and Ebay, I think. Sunspots - April 2023 Kathy and I are planning to be under this years Annular Solar Eclipse in October. Annular means that the moon is farther away from the earth and does not totally block the sun. Thus there is a “ring of fire,” an annulus around the eclipse. In preparation for that event, I am testing my cameras and sun filters to make sure everything will work as expected. I have a rather large “bird lens” for my Nikon 7100 which takes great images, but has a bit of a balance/shake problem when pointed up rather than straight out. I have used my Nikon P900, however, for a lot of Moon images and it performs beautifully. In fact, when I checked the images after they were transferred to my computer I discovered I had captured an image of sun spots. I am posting two different images just to show that it is not dirt on the lense. I was hand holding the camera and there is no way I could have gotten it aligned exactly the same for two images. I really prefer the first image, but the sun spots are more visible in the second. MWM
