January 15 sun and moon! One shot each (no stacking), both on #Canon R5 + #Sigma 150-600C I borrowed Taku’s (@smaku) super cool solar filter, to see and capture this many sun spots! The moon was already high and I shout it in the morning light. I love shooting the waning crescent (44%) as it gives you a lot of details in even one single shot. With the use of a solar filter I captured the silhouette of the @cntower’s observation deck at sunrise. But what’s even more interesting is I captured a few sunspots that were occurring that morning. Sunspot 2993 and 2994 are clearly visible on the left side of the sun. I also found sunspot 2990 and 2991 in another image—the CN Tower is covering those in this picture. . Sunspots are regions of high magnetic activity with lower temperatures than it’s surroundings—several thousands of degrees lower—which is why they are darker than their surroundings. They are temporary, lasting anywhere from a few days to a month, and can be anywhere in width from a few kms to several hundred thousands of kms. When this massive amount of energy is released from the surface of the sun, we get solar flares. And when these solar flares are projected towards Earth, there is a good change we get a wonderful showing of the aurora borealis in the upper and lower latitudes. . The CN Tower and its observatory deck always gets the attention so one fine morning I decided to shine the light on the Sky Pod, standing at a cool 447m high.
