“The singer from Limburg is Sephiroth (20), also the lyricist for the Black Metal band Occult. A pale boy with blonde curls. A large upside-down cross hangs from his chest. His real name is Maurice Swinkels, and he lives in Venlo. Until recently, he also played in Bestial Summoning, but that band has definitively broken up after the guitarist committed suicide.
‘Bestial was more improvisation, with blood and other stuff. We made up on the spot what we were going to play on stage. As long as it was chaotic and dirty. We released an LP of which 1500 copies have been sold so far. Quite special, for something that doesn’t sound like anything.’
For more than five years, Sephiroth has maintained close contacts with the Black Metal scene in Norway. There are the groups he admires, such as Mayhem and Burzum. He was close friends with the two frontmen of those groups, Euronymous and C. G. Correspondence with those prominent Satanists is now on hold: ‘The Count is in prison because they found 150 kilos of dynamite in his basement. And Euronymous is dead. I know those guys very well, so it’s quite a shock. Three years ago, the previous singer of Mayhem was also shot in the head.’
- Sephiroth, formerly of Bestial Summoning, Occult, Deinonychus, interviewed in the Dutch magazine “Nieuwe Revu.” Part 1 of 2. Thanks to @gertb1908 for the article 🕯️

Misotheist – Vessels By Which The Devil Is Made Flesh (2024)
Tumblr media
James looks at Vessels By Which The Devil Is Made Flesh, the third album from Norwegian black metal act Misotheist, released February 29th on Terratur Possessions.
For me this is a top contender for album of the year so far in 2024, its one of the few albums I’ve had on repeat since first listen without ever feeling even remotely bored. This is exactly what you want in a black metal album, its raw, powerful, atmospheric, complex and confronting. The long-form song structures allow for real complexity and B. Kråbøl gives one of the rawest, most powerful vocal performances so far this year. If you’re a black metal fan in any capacity, especially of Norwegian black metal then I highly recommend this release.

Wednesday, May 31: Sirenia, “Nomadic”
Outside of Nightwish and Within Temptation, symphonic operatic goth metal didn’t really take off in a big way.  But it drew enough of a crowd that a whole bunch of bands not only sprouted up but stuck around, with Norway’s Sirenia now 11 albums deep.  “Nomadic” didn’t deviate from the rest of 1977, or pretty much anything else they’ve done, so it offered a representative example of both the band and their chosen subgenre: Emmanuelle Zoldan’s vocals were simultaneously haunting, melodramatic and cheesy, but they ably captured the mood Sirenia was going for, while the accompanying music had a representative balance of heaviness via power chords and moody bombast.  The primary distinction between “Nomadic” and more recent Nightwish would be a lack of concept and more generally down to earth approach, which for this particular sound was actually a bit refreshing.

VULTURE INDUSTRIES are sad because a squirrel has stolen their camera.
That little punk.
Sitting up there in the branches, mocking them. You let your guard down in the forest, this is what happens. Nature is a cruel mistress who laughs at man's hubris and folly. And stores nuts for the winter.
Who's good at climbing trees?
Sad metal is sad.

[Album of the day] Defect Designer - Chitin
Oslo, NOR | 2024 | Transcending Obscurity Records
[Genres] death thrash, avant-garde, technical
[FFO] Ghoul, KOBOLD (SRB)
[Thoughts] Shred heavy, light technical elements, whole lotta fun. Might take a few listens, but just keep smoking more weed and you should get there.
Also if you dig Ian Miller's cover artwork (like I do), check out more on his portfolio.
