Y/n lets go of her father's hands and switches the suitcase to her other side. She hates the man before her but she still leans in and presses a small kiss to his cheek, pulling back to examine him. Clean, is the word she would use to describe him. Colored hair and a shaved face, her father looked younger than she could pin him.
"Is it still the same?" Y/n points to the glass door. "It's been so long."
Y/F/N only nods and turns to hold the door for the three agents. Y/n goes in last, goosebumps on her arms from the seconds no one watches the two. But as Y/F/N makes no moves, she slowly calms down and ignores the looks she gets. She's her father's twin, she knows that, but from the way she carried herself past years, she can see the shock in some people's eyes as the badge resides on the band of the pants.
"Here." Y/F/N takes the three agents into the big conference room. The room Y/n was never allowed to go in, the one that held every meeting that pulled her father away from her life, the one she dreaded.
Y/F/N didn't follow Derek, Penelope, and Y/n into the room, leaving them to interrogate.
"Fields?" Derek was a little hurt and the sudden front his partner put on.
"Not now." Y/n shut down any further questions and walked past her team members to start the step up. The board looked clean halfway through, papers in order, and information that Y/n wrote up made it easier on Penelope, who was still giving Y/n the cold shoulder.
The silence the three create as they work is not tense. Frankly, the only sounds are Y/n's nails against her tablet and Penelope's keys being clacked against her research, mixed in with a little bit of Derek's blocky writing against his yellow pad.
Well, it was silent, until the door busted open with an angry man coming in and screaming at Y/n. "You should have answered my damn text!" He screamed, walking towards her, causing her to step out of her seat and back to the nearest wall. Derek did the same but in the protection of his girlfriend. "I was worried sick and you couldn't even bother to text me a quick answer? What the fuck is that about?" The man is still screaming until he is shut down by Derek.
"Excuse you!" He walks forward, his body still protecting Y/n's. "Watch yourself and who you talk to like that!" Derek isn't screaming like Deputy James, the tag on his uniform reads. Deputy James Diaz. But Derek's tone is indeed strict. It's rare anyone hears him speak as he did moments ago, even on cases. Daiz steps down. Derek doesn't move his body from Y/n but she moves from behind him to next to him.
"We can talk about this later." She looked him straight in the eye. Fear from her father still ran through Y/n's bloodstream as she spoke, but Y/n stood her ground and watched James slowly back up before he left the room himself. His face too looked cleaner and he overall looked better. It's hard to look at James from the last time they were alone together, but that didn't stop Y/n from seeing the differences.
For years and years, he kept quiet about his feelings to the woman next to him. Her hair smelled like flowers as she laid on his shoulder, hands connected as they watched the stars off of his apartment building roof.
"You are one the reasons I still come back to the wretched town, James," Y/n spoke truthfully. "You are the one friend that has always stayed by me."
James only smiled and looked at Y/n. She sits up from his shoulder and they meet eyes. It's regular to her so she doesn't stop him when his hand caresses her cheek. It's not regular when his lips meet hers and at first she wants to say something. But he kisses her again and she doesn't stop him. Y/n gets pulled in closer and lets James run his hand on her back.
"Should we?" Y/n's words drift.
"I've wanted to for as long as I could imagine." James honestly replied.
"Who was that?" Penelope finally spoke up.
"The deputy. Also, an old friend that I fell out of touch with."
"And what is talking about you not answering his text? What is going on here?" Derek pushed his writing pad aside.
"My high school reunion is in 4 days, on Saturday. James and a few others texted me because everyone wanted to know I was coming, I didn't reply because I didn't expect to be here." Y/n speaks fast, and if years with Spencer didn't help the two in the past, it helped them now as they picked up every word.
"And you didn't say anything? We could have made it if you were concerned about work-"
"I didn't want to go in the first place," Y/n spoke words that had less meaning of what she truly meant. Derek nor Penelope continued the conversation after that and tried to get back to work. It was only 8 A.M in the hot state and as much as they needed coffee, no one wanted the shitty police coffee they get every case.
20 minutes passed and Penny headed out to find a bathroom. Derek still hadn't said anything and only fiddled with his pen as his mind stayed blank. Eyes stayed on the filled page as the sound of Y/n getting up from her chair played in his ears. He tried to ignore her as he could until she placed a hand on his shoulder. No, he didn't shove her off or push her away, even though his muscles tensed.
"Babe.." Y/n called, turning her head to the closed door and the blinded window next to her before turning back. "I'm sorry, I should have told you."
"Yea. You should've." Derek scoffed, leaning himself back in the office chair he resided in. "I mean come on Y/n, this is the type of thing we are supposed to talk about."
"I know. I know." Y/n easily fits herself between the conference table and Derek. "I just can't be here and didn't want to think about it so I just ignored it in general, and I am so so sorry I didn't tell you." Derek takes Y/n's hands and closes them in his.
"It's ok, just.., let's get to the bottom of this case so we can go home ok?" Y/n nods and leans down pressing a small kiss to Derek's lips.
"How about we get this day over and at least hit the hotel? Wouldn't that be nice, daddy?" She smirked and whispered, the door making her pull away before she could receive an answer. Penelope sat down, more focused while the two soon joined her. It was just the three in the room for a while. When Aaron and Emily joined them first, evidence came with them, leaving Y/n to add it to the board.
"Y/L/N, you're 29 right?" Penelope finally spoke to the woman.
A small mhm left Y/n as she peeled the glove from her hand.
"But Christina and Rose are 32? How would you guys share the same reunion?"
But before Y/n could answer the given question, Aaron had his own.
"Reunion? You didn't say anything?"
"Small high school reunion for all. Not just for the seniors, we don't do that here. Technically, I still have 3 left to go because this year would be their senior year." Y/n clarified. "I didn't need to say anything because I don't ever come back to the place. Not for birthdays, weddings, I'm the black sheep that everyone knows."
And with that, Y/n proudly shut down the unwanted questions her way. Aaron looked over to Derek, surprised when he seemed equally confused. Y/n didn't say she knew the victims, but she talked about them as if she did and Aaron wrote it down as questions to bring up when his subjects came in for questioning later that day.
Penelope's profile and research grew more as the team was reunited again but she still didn't understand why or who was targeting these women.
"I set up times for everyone Hotch," Penelope closed tabs on her computer. She tried to stay focused but after 3 hours and more looking at horrible crime photos, she needed her baby kittens and pandas.
"Good, thank you," Aaron said, leaving the question in the air. "Lunch anyone? We all have to be hungry."
"Yea, any good places?" David put down his own work before turning over to Y/n.
"I'll ask around."
"You don't remember any?" A voice at the door spooked everyone.
"Nope." Y/n popped the P. Now that she was around her team, her father didn't scare her. Confidence boosted around her.
Spencer looked between Y/F/N and Y/n multiple times before saying some of the others were thinking. "Is he your brother? You both look identical!"
"No!" Y/n responded offended. Yes, her father cleaned up his act but there was no way he looked that young. "And it's not important, the only thing I remember is a diner about 15 minutes from here."
"It is important, I'm her father. But Y/n's right, there is a diner called Happy's 10 minutes west." He crossed his arms and rested his face. His eyebrow twitched, but Y/n ignored it and looked past him, out to the open.
"Not that important," She mumbled. "Let's go eat, I'll drive."
Y/n followed her father into the '80s themed diner. She stood behind him and watched as he tapped the bell.
"Hey, Lennie! Wanted to get me a coffee and my Daredevil a bagel before I headed in for the day, can you whip it up for us?" Y/F/N talked to the manager that had walked out of the back. The stupid nickname Y/n had since she was four made Lennie look at her, giving her a half-wave that she gave back.
"Sure Bud, on the house for our favorite sheriff and his wonderful daughter."
Y/n pulled the car into park and Aaron did the same. The team was large, one vehicle wasn't nearly enough. Y/n was the first to get out, holding open the door for everyone. The diner was almost empty. Only one woman resided in the back, her hair so long that her face was covered by it. She didn't want to be seen, that was clear. Y/n tapped the bell and waited for someone to come out, shocked, to say the least when Lennie came out.
"Lennie!" She said happily, putting a smile on the old man's face.
"Daredevil! You're back!" Lennie walked around the counter and hugged Y/n like never before. It was soon he learned why she got the name daredevil and it stuck until now.
"I am back, and pretty hungry, you still have those magic skills of yours?"
"You know it! Come sit, come sit," Lennie walked over to a booth and seated everyone. He more than happily took everyone's order and every so often he checked on the lady who sat in the back. For once, Y/n was happy to be home. Dipping her fries in the milkshake, true laughter ran from Y/n. For once, no one was pushing her. For once, everything was calm.
Lennie insisted that lunch was on the house and he had it covered, but Y/n still slipped that 100 dollars bill in his pocket like it was nothing. She hopped back into the driver's seat and led the way down the street, window open and the air humid now that the sun was fully out.
The time that displayed itself on her watch said 2:35. They had been out for less than 2 hours, and it was the best time she has had here in a while. Y/n walks into the station with a small smile and joins the team back to the conference room. Everyone is in a better mood. Work comes to them naturally and the only thing that stops the peaceful space is James.
"There has been another body- Daniela Choi."

KICKS (part 8)

You and Roger finally give in to your feelings, but it doesn’t end as well as you had hoped.
WARNINGS: Smut. NOTES: Thanks for sticking with this one – it means a lot. Sorry it’s late and really short. I’m just feeling a bit uninspired to write right now.

Roger moved swiftly. The weight of him almost sent you flying backwards as your lips collided for the very first time. Picture perfect and just like something from a film, sparks flew inside you. Between you. Everywhere.
You clung to him. Moved with him. In a delirious push and pull. Hands in hair. Trailing down each others’ bodies. Eventually, your fingers snagged in his belt loops in a futile attempt at stability. Roger well and truly made up for lost time. He grabbed your hips and gripped your thighs. Dragged his hands all the way up your body and clawed his fingers through your hair.
It felt like a delicious eternity before Roger broke away with his pink lips parted ever so slightly. “I can’t believe this is happening,” he giggled, trying to draw in a breath.
And then your eyes shot open. A fistful of Roger’s t-shirt in your hand, just about to tear it off. “What time is it?”
Roger slowly removed himself from you. His features dropped in disappointment.
Your heart felt like it had burrowed right to the bottom of your stomach. “Sorry… work,” you explained.
Roger nodded and held his wrist up high enough that he could just about make out the dials. “Half eight,” he said. “Do you still want to–“
Before he could finish that sentence, your lips were glued to his again. Hopping off the work bench, you walked Roger back across the entire width of his garage. Your hands roamed every step of the way. Until you reached the Aston Martin, tucked away on the far side.
Roger gave a few playful nips at your neck. “You like the expensive ones?” he grinned.
Putting on your best doe eyes, you fluttered your lashes and sat back on the hood. “I’ve always wanted someone to fuck me on the bonnet of a pretty car if that’s what you mean. And you had better get a move on.”
Roger bit his lip and tugged down his zipper. “Fortunately for you, this one goes pretty fast.”
You lay back and spread your thighs for Roger. His breathing hitched just watching you run your fingers over the damp spot on your knickers. Just waiting for him to make the first move.
“Fuck,” he sighed, throwing himself at you. One hand tugged your underwear aside, the other grabbed the back of your neck, keeping you nose to nose with him. “You really don’t fuck around.”
You gasped at the feeling of his fingers – unrestrained and eager to please – exploring every slick, damp fold. And then he found your clit. Circle after circle felt like lightning and forced you to bury your face in the crook of Roger’s neck. God, he smelled incredible. Smoke and petrol and a hint of sweat. You could have stayed like that forever. But Roger had other plans for you.
His other hand gently guided your head back. He paused, gazing down at you. “Are you sure you’re ok with this?”
Why did he have to do that? A pang of disappointment burned though your body. You needed him to keep going.
Roger pressed his forehead to yours. “I’m being serious here.”
“Yes, please,” you said. You grabbed his hand to try and make it move again. “Just keep doing this while you fuck me.”
Roger’s free hand wrapped around the shaft of his cock. Thick, veined and throbbing.
You looked down in awe as inch by inch Roger sank inside you while his thumb continued to tease you. Everything else in the room felt like it was spinning.
“Feel ok?” he asked, kissing the tip of your nose.
You kissed him back and nodded.
“Lie back for me.”
Easing yourself back, you wrapped your thighs around Roger’s body. He started slow, so slow that you felt every vein, every ridge. Every time his cock brushed against that sweet spot inside you.
You felt incredible; trembling and squeezing around Roger’s cock. So much so that he couldn’t stand up straight while he fucked you, or even focus on rubbing your clit any longer. He planted his hands on either side of your head and hunched over you, speeding up. His chest pressed against your own. “You like that?” he groaned, clawing at the expensive green paintwork.
“Yes,” you hissed. You couldn’t stop your hands from wandering between your thighs or grabbing his hair. When you were on the verge of truly sinking into another headspace, blocking everything else out, Roger took control again.
First you felt your toes touch the cold, hard concrete. Then being spun around. Soon enough you were face down, panting against the hood of his car. One leg propped up on the bumper. Roger’s fingers dug into your hips so tight that you were certain they’d leave a bruise. Every sound reverberated right to the rafters in the garage. Heated moans, and the echo of every sloppy, purposeful thrust. Delirium wasn’t far off. You could feel it building.
He was getting close too. You could tell by the way his teeth bore into the spot between your neck and your shoulder with a muffled, guttural growl. No words needed. He needed this as much as you did.
Towards the end, something snapped. You stared at your fogged up reflection as Roger finished inside you. But you just couldn’t let go.
He hadn’t even caught his breath or tucked his cock back in his jeans before you were back on your feet, keen to get back into the house to clean yourself up and get to work. He raked his fingers through his hair and squinted at you in the orange glow from the heater. “Did you…finish?”
You shook your head, and smoothed Roger’s shirt over your thighs. “I really should…” you trailed off, jabbing your thumb towards the house behind you. “…get ready. Work and everything.”
Roger held up his hands and took a step back. He seemed to understand.
You had only just stepped outside into the brisk morning when you peeked back over your shoulder. He stood there in the garage with his arms folded, watching you. He wore a bittersweet smile. You turned to him. “See you later?” you shrugged.
A glimmer of light returned to Roger’s big, sad eyes. “Sounds good.”
There was no other way to look at things. If Roger stopped tinkering with the Range Rover, then he would have been rallying the Aston Martin into town. But he didn’t want to look desperate. He didn’t want to take a mile when you had only just given him an inch. So he spent hours under the hood. Doing far more harm to his runaround than good. Poking at every detail of the last 24 hours in his head.
But he couldn’t get over how soon you left.
Had he gone too far? Too rough? Did he say something?
When faced with a problem he couldn’t solve, Roger’s rage reared its ugly head. Fortunately, that only amounted to hurling a spanner across the garage when his brain couldn’t handle any more.
Wiping his hands with a rag, he called it a day in the garage.
Thoughts of you lingered on him like your scent on his t-shirt, he couldn’t resist pressing it to his nose as he waited for the water in the shower to heat up. He needed to wash away the grime and reason his way out of this one; every stroke of his hand over his body made him burn with need and desire. Lathering the soap into his arms. Down his chest. His abdomen. His fingers curled through the wisps of hair down towards his half-erect cock.
Roger’s body felt heavy, burdened with need as he leaned against the wall. His mouth dropped open with a reserved groan when he thought back to fucking you in the garage. How touching you felt just like a religious experience; not that he believed in those. It was as close he’d get to one. His hand gripped his shaft tighter, trying to remember just how tight you felt and how you moaned for him. The scent of your hair. He screwed his eyes shut and tilted his head back, trying to paint as vivid a picture as he could. But the details were too fuzzy. All he knew for sure was that he wanted you even more now.

FRIENDLY REMINDER: you’ve made it this far! Congratulations! Please, if you enjoyed reading this fic, reblog it.
You spent 20 minutes reading this for free. I spent a lot more time writing this... for nothing but the hope that you’ll share this and leave some feedback. I love writing fanfiction, but it’s really demoralising to rarely get feedback, and for tumblr’s algorithm to bury posts because no one shares them. And honestly, I don’t want to guilt you, but I’m kind of close to quitting sharing my writing on here because of it.
SO PLEASE, SUPPORT WRITERS. REBLOG FICS (EVEN IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU HAVE A LOT OF FOLLOWERS)! LEAVE FEEDBACK (EVEN JUST A KEY SMASH, DON’T BE SHY)! I’D REALLY APPRECIATE IT AND I’M SURE OTHER AUTHORS WOULD, TOO!

EU study tips
BEFORE YOU START STUDYING
Plan
1. You have to be clear about how you are going to use the time. The first thing is to plan and decide what you are going to learn and how much time you are going to spend.
2. You should study as much as you need without leaving a subject or problem half-way through, so that you can study a different subject. Otherwise, what you learn will be so confusing that it will be the same as not having studied at all.
3. Make a list of all the activities you will do that afternoon. It's a good idea to have a daily study schedule, but one that is realistic, given your abilities.
4. Arrange the activities. Which one should you start with? Some experts advise starting with what is easiest for you, to encourage you to keep studying. Others say it's better to start with the difficult subjects, and get them out of the way as soon as possible. You choose, based on your own experience.
5. The schedule should be flexible and prepared for the unexpected. It will help you not to accumulate backlogs.
6. Don't forget to include time for rest and leisure in your schedule.
NOTES
Take note of what matters
7. When taking notes, try to listen to everything the teacher says.
8. Stand close, as you will be in a better position to see and hear.
9. You should pay close attention at the beginning of the class. This is the moment when the teacher gives a general idea of the subject.
10. Adopt a good posture in the chair. It will make it easier for you to attend and therefore understand the class.
11. While you are taking notes, you should discover which ideas are main, secondary or anecdotal.
12. If the teacher says something is very important, highlight it. It's very possible that you'll fail the exam.
13. Leave space or margin for later notes.
14. If there is something in the explanation that you didn't catch, leave a space to complete it at the end of the class.
IN FORM
Mens sana in corpore sano
15. To study well, it is as important to be in good physical condition as it is psychic.
16. A balanced diet is recommended, rich in phosphorus, calcium and vitamins: vegetables, fish, milk, eggs and fruits. Remember that food is your gasoline.
17. Do not overdo it with copious meals. A heavy stomach will prevent you from studying.
18. It is advisable to eat small amounts, but several times a day.
19. Sleep between 7 and 9 hours. Rest is essential to study.
20. If you are one of those who are stressed and want to guarantee a peaceful sleep, take a warm bath before dinner or bed.
21. Deep breathing exercises are also relaxing.
22. Regular physical exercise is another good practice against stress.
23. Stimulants should not be taken for study purposes. Caffeine-rich drinks, such as coffee or cola, can make you nervous and have the opposite effect to what you want.
THE SCHEDULE
Get organized!
24. Get used to having a fixed study schedule.
25. Take 5-10 minute breaks every hour.
26. It is recommended to study from Monday to Saturday from 2 to 3 hours a day.
27. Manage your study time well. Time is difficult to control and is easily wasted on unproductive and aimless tasks.
28. Use Sundays for leisure and hobbies.
29. Don't leave studying to the last minute. Haste does not help learning. Start preparing for the exams from the beginning of the course.
PLACE OF STUDY
Everything in its place
30. Always study in the same room. It will help you concentrate.
31. The study place should be airy and well ventilated.
32. There has to be an adequate temperature. Not too cold, not too hot.
33. Study in a room without noise. In any case, soft music.
34. Make sure there are no distractions such as television, radio, games, cell phone or table decorations.
35. The work table should have all the necessary material for study.
36. The light should preferably be natural, if not white or blue. It should come from the side opposite to the hand with which you write.
37. It is advisable to use a light bulb with a blue 60W bulb. In the rest of the room a dim light.
38. The table and chair should be in line with your height.
39. The chair should be comfortable, but not too comfortable and with a backrest.
40. The trunk should be stretched out and the back should be supported by the back of the chair.
41. You should be about 30 centimeters from your notes or study book.
THE TIME OF STUDY
It's time to study
42. It's important to be determined when it comes to studying. You have to be aware that it is a job that has to be done and it is better to do it with desire and joy.
43. First look at the lesson.
41. Separate the parts that make up the topic.
44. Look at the drawings and graphics.
45. Try to relate that topic to previously acquired knowledge.
46. Make an initial synthesis of the topic.
UNDERLINED
Highlight what's important
47. Try to understand the subject before you start to underline.
48. The underlining is a critical selection. You must highlight the main ideas.
49. Underlining must make complete sense.
50. Underline the main ideas with red or double line.
51. Underline with blue or single line the secondary ideas, examples and data.
52. It is not advisable to use more than two colors.
53. A vertical line in the margin means that the whole paragraph is marked.
54. Other signs that you can use are rounding, for numbering or classification; box, for statements, name or key dates; question mark, when there are indications of error; exclamation mark, to check a statement; period, when you have to complete other readings
55. It is advisable to underline between 25 and 30% of the text.
DIAGRAM
Organize the ideas
56. Arrange in a logical way the main and secondary ideas underlined.
57. Classify them according to your criteria.
58. Use your own words. It will be easier to memorize later.
59. First of all, be brief, short, precise and clear sentences.
60. Try to say everything important in the least amount of space possible.
61. The outline should have a clean presentation.
62. You can use the symbol of the arrows as a link
63. You must make a title that summarizes the content.
64. Divide the subject into three or four sections that collect several main ideas and that hang the secondary ones.
65. Leave spaces in the margins for later notes.
66. Use the same indent for the same sections.
67. There are several kinds of diagrams: numerical (number only), mixed (Roman numerals, upper and lower case letters, numbers...) and the synoptic table (of graphs or keys).
68. Use the synoptic table for dates, names, quantities...
SUMMARY
Keep it short
69. This is usually done after the underlining and study of the subject.
70. It should be done by trying not to look at the notes.
71. It should be brief but with all the main ideas.
72. Then you must read it carefully with the original text to complete what is missing.
REVIEW
Ensures that what is learned
73. It consists in mentally repeating the main ideas of the underlining or outline.
74. This should be done with the books closed and notes put aside.
75. It should be checked with the notes.
76. This step must be repeated until the outline is memorized and you are sure that you know the subject.
77. It is recommended to carry out all the good practices that we have commented on. Last-minute binges do not work. You must use your memory in the days before the exam, mainly to memorize the schemes.
REST
Recharge batteries
78. When it's time to rest, leave the room where you study. Relax, eat something, talk to someone, take a walk, or do anything else that is not related to studying. In this way, you will avoid mental fatigue.
EXAM
The moment of truth
79. It is important to go in good physical and mental condition.
80. Get a good night's rest. Get at least six hours of sleep.
81. Go with all the necessary material.
82. Before the exam, take a few minutes to relax: take a deep breath, close your eyes... It will help you control the natural nerves at the beginning of the exam.
83. Always listen to your teacher's instructions before and during the exam. They are important.
84. Take an overview of the exam to organize your time.
85. Spread out your time and questions.
86. If you see a question you don't know, don't be nervous. Save it for last.
86. Ask the questions you know best first.
87. It is important to take into account what kind of exam you are going to have (development, test type...) and what the teacher wants (conciseness, clarity...)
89. Read the questions carefully to find out exactly what they ask.
90. Remember to highlight in your exam what the teacher has highlighted in class.
91. Answer the question. Don't leave by the hills of Úbeda.
92. To do developmental exams: outline the points you want to cover on a separate sheet of paper.
93. Don't answer like a telegram, and don't roll up too much.
94. Review the entire test before handing it in, noting spelling mistakes, omissions, essays. It is just as important to know as it is to look like you know, and teachers take this into account when scoring.
95. Check the back for more questions. You wouldn't be the first one who, in a hurry and nervous, leaves a question he knows unanswered, simply because he hasn't seen it.
96. Take care of the cleanliness, the handwriting and the presentation. It is essential that the teacher understands you.
WHAT IF, AFTER ALL, I FAIL?
98. Don't worry, you can learn from your failures too. Reflect and try to find the reasons why it happened.
99. If it was your nerves that played a trick on you, you know, practice relaxation techniques and put away the exciting drinks.
100. If the reason for your failure was that you didn't study enough or in the right way, plan better and start studying now for your next exams. Take into account what you failed at, so that you don't fail again, and use these tips when you get lost.

ECLECTICLE 8/8
Tumblr media
It's not the destination, it's the journey.
My youngest is now a college freshman. The trip across country had no major hiccups and transitions were smooth. Everything culminating with Move In Day. I managed to cry only once -- that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Welcome class of 2023.
+++
8:00am Move In:
Check in at the dorm is in full force. As we pulled up at the curb, bright young upperclassmen -- brimming with the energy that can only be attributed to youth, quickly offer us help with our baggage. They have a pretty good system down. Like they've done this before. This may not be a bad process after all.
Carts and suitcases, dorm fridges and bodies glide back and forth in a seemingly endless procession. New students trying not to look worried while their responsible adults have expressions that mix relief with sadness and anticipation. A father hustles past with a broom and a bucket of cleaning supplies. Sporting a alumni t-shirt still creased from the campus bookstore, he beams with pride. Over there is a look that says, "I'm tired, but we made it.”  Coming down the hallway are a mother and son, both wearing the same face, with a look that says "What have we gotten ourselves into?" I am feeling all of that. I wonder if it shows?
2:00pm Cookout:
Late lunch/early dinner at the dining hall. I had been expecting a big smoker or a large grill, but given the weather, I can understand. Tables have been set up outside in the middle of the road. The likely intention is so that people can eat communally under the cypress and dogwood trees and the bright blue sky with puffy white clouds. But it's in the 80's with humidity, so like many families, we opt for eating inside. #2 (my youngest) seems to be doing pretty well at this point. His usual stoic self. Myself, I am made happy by the fact that the dining hall serves chocolate and vanilla soft serve ice cream. Maybe things will be alright after all.
7:00pm President's Welcome and Parting Ceremony:
We gather in the historic Memorial Chapel -- all straight back wood pews and stained glass windows. Parents and families to the right, incoming students to the left. The parting ceremony, a long-standing university tradition begins. The words of the university president are stirring and impassioned. There is an acknowledgement of student leaders and staff. There’s music and reflection. Searching the opposite side of the standing room only crowd I see #2. I wonder what he's experiencing in this moment. Hard to tell. Still undemonstrative as ever. We, the parents, are reminded that our young folks will now need us in a different way than before. They will now have to navigate this space for themselves. We can cheer them on from the sidelines, but they need to walk this new path -- independent of us. Okay so maybe I teared up a little here. My son’s journey for this next stage of life has begun. His success is within him. And the forecast for the journey is good. No major hiccups. Transitions will be smooth.

If you’re new here, ECLECTICLE Is my “Eclectic Listicle” of the recent things that have been happening in my world. It is a regularly occurring place to toss out items of interest and information. My hope is that you will enjoy it and find something useful. So, let’s get going.

What I’m eating:
 Waffle House
This just HAD to happen. Out here in the West Coast we don't have Waffle Houses, but it is truly a southern thing. The 24 Hour diner chain has over 1500 company and franchise owned restaurants and when I saw that we would be right near one I though when would I ever get the chance to try this again? It was everything I wanted from a diner and then some. Even #2 got steak, which made him happy. Thanks Waffle House for the good breakfast!

What I’m reading:
I have a certain affection for the celebration of uniqueness and the art of remaking something at once thought broken and irreparable into something whole and new. Here is an interesting piece on a local artist doing just that.  San Francisco's Master Of Modern Kintsugi
This feature of Rachel Bolden-Kramer by Sarah Henry for EdibleSF has me thinking of more ways to stretch my family's food budget as well as how and what we eat. The Last Black Woman In SF Wants Everyone To Eat Well
SF Weekly reports yet another era ending transition as San Francisco's Haight Ashbury Free Clinic and Tenderloin Health Services close and transitions services. Haight Ashbury Free Clinic Tenderloin Health Services To Close
In this article from Heather Knight at the SF Chron I see very similar parallels to what is happening here in my East Bay town. Why Are More Mentally Ill People Wandering SF Streets?
What I’m Listening to:
Tank And The Bangas
I’ve been a fan of this group out of New Orleans for at least a year now and they continue to delight and entertain me with their turn of phrase and catchy music. Check them out in the video to one of their newest songs:
Hot Air Balloons - Feat. Alex Isley
What I’m watching:
Pop-Tarts
First off, I will plant my flag on this: Pop Tarts have GOT to be warmed/toasted. Period. Cold Pop-Tarts are just, well, wrong.
Second, if you are a bit of a baking geek like I am -- and if you can get through all the snark and condescension at the beginning, spend the half hour and give this a watch. It’s kinda fun

CHRISTINE
It isn’t until she actually reaches the threshold of the small bakery—notes the conspicuous lack of anyone inside; the cold darkness behind the locked door; the little placard advising patrons to come back another day—that Christine remembers that it is Sunday.
She thinks regretfully of the pastries she’d hoped to find, absent from the empty display cases just visible among the shadows. Her hand drops awkwardly from the door handle. Realization seems to reach her feet last: twisting back into motion from their unsteady stall, they launch her ungracefully away from the storefront before anyone else on the street can notice her; if the bakery had to be closed, at least it was also *empty*.
Disappointment clings like mud to her tennis shoes as she continues down the sidewalk; so much the better: walking slowly helps to eat up a bit of her suddenly-free time.
She shakes it off as she catches site of a loud patch of yellow up ahead, standing out almost garishly against pale stone and mid-morning gloom: mailboxes, at least, don’t have hours. There’s no rush, but she quickens her stride anyway, nearly skipping up to the metal box and dropping Mamma’s postcard through the slot. Perhaps her pastry plans were foiled, but that doesn’t mean the morning has to be a complete loss.
That thought, itself, helps to lift her spirits: what are a few pastries, ultimately, when she has such a greater reason to be excited this morning?
Pausing a few paces past the mailbox, Christine checks her phone. No reply from Erik. Maybe (hopefully) he’s busy with his own breakfast.
She’s wandered farther than she’d intended to; still, it only takes a few minutes to make her way back to Erik’s house, hoping that he won’t mind her arriving a *bit* early.
No sooner has she climbed the front steps than she understands why her text message has gone unanswered.
From downstairs, the same way she had a few days ago, she can hear the distinctive sound of a piano being played.
At first, she takes the muffled music for a warm up, thinking eagerly of her lesson. But—there’s some quality of it that makes her pause to listen more closely, straining her ears toward the sound, thinking suddenly of the distressed state she’d found him in on that prior particular morning.
Though the piece is clearly a different one, there are definite similarities in the way he is playing now: in the tension that seems to choke the beauty out of the piano’s voice, notes echoing harshly up from the direction of the basement.
Has he been upset by something, the way he was about the prospect of his doctor’s appointment?
As Christine stands and listens, though, distinctions become clear. That other day, Erik had played with what could only be described as franticness; despite the intricacy of the score, and the accuracy with which he’d played it, it was reduced almost more to *noise* than real *music* as he barreled through each measure, his anxieties bleeding into every hammered chord.
Now, though—passages are broken up, staggered and tentative, as if the score itself were uncertain in its progression, punctuated by inconsistent pauses and repeated phrases. Tense though it is, his playing lacks the distracted, incessant rush of before.
And there’s something else different, something about the music itself.
She doesn’t recognize the piece—wonders how well Erik himself could know it, to render it in such a manner. Still, the longer she listens, the more she feels that there’s something familiar about it. Something just out of reach. Maybe not the precise melody, or the way it is played, but rather… Rather, what *else*?
Maybe if she could hear better, instead of straining to listen through the walls; maybe if she could *see* him, she wonders, eyes flitting futilely down at the curtained basement window.
The scuffling of shoes, and a high-pitched burst of French from the opposite side of the street, breaks her concentration. Turning, Christine glances across just in time to see a small gaggle of young boys staring at her with obvious bewilderment. She hardly has the chance to return their look of surprise before they’ve all bolted down a nearby alleyway.
The same kids Darius had mentioned, maybe, she thinks as she checks her phone again—and realises with a cringe that, as she has stood listening, ten o'clock has come and gone.
Downstairs, the music reaches another halting pause, and, despite her remaining misgivings—and the urge to continue listening—Christine seizes the opportunity to ring the doorbell.
-
ERIK
The doorbell is a fairly foreign sound in Erik’s house, and loud all the way through. He jumps at the noise, fingers slipping on the keys, and is immediately irritated. He hasn’t had a noise complaint in quite a long time- why else would someone be at his door at this time?
His eyes widen once he manages to hastily push aside his pages of scrawled notes and look at his phone. Already past ten.
He is up from his bench immediately, pausing only to take a quick glance back at the dismal state of the room. There’s nothing he can do about it now, with her at the door- but there are more pressing things, and he takes the stairs two at a time, calling “Un moment!” as he passes by the mercifully windowless door. He snatches his mask off the dining room table- it’s a mess here, too, he thinks as he puts it on. Cigarette carton lying on the table, dishes still sitting in the sink, and that’s not even to mention the mess he is himself. He isn’t dressed to meet her at all, still in the same clothes from last night, but he can’t leave her waiting on his porch while he goes to his room and gets dressed. He picks up the tablet and goes decisively back to the door; every time she comes, his stomach rolls when he’s at the door- no matter how many times they do this, there’s always anxiety in knowing that he’s about to see her.
Until he sees her.
It’s just so good to look at her- they meet eyes almost immediately when he finally cracks the door open, and the sight of her eyes, hopeful and welcoming and quickly becoming familiar, puts his nerves at ease. Despite himself, he smiles crookedly as he ushers her inside and, as usual, shuts the door quickly behind her.
“Christine,” he greets her, still riding the wave of peace that has overtaken him- how long has it been? Only one day? It seems like so much longer since he’s seen her. “Je suis désolé, j'étais… distrait. Ah… förvirrad? Peut-être?” He shakes his head. “Jag är ledsen. Mais.” He gestures at her- to her coat, specifically, and manages, “det ser bra ut.”
He talks a bit more quickly than usual, and he has to remind himself to go quiet and give her a moment to respond to him and settle in. It’s only once he goes quiet that a bit of his self-consciousness returns- she looks lovely, dressed in her new coat. He knows that it must look like he just rolled out of bed; it takes some self-control to not apologize again, but just step back and let his eyes dart to the ground, giving her some space in the entryway to hang up her coat if she wants to.
-
CHRISTINE
The silence that follows the doorbell lasts just long enough for Christine to start considering whether she should try ringing it again, as if it weren’t impossible that Erik might have *not* heard the bell the first time; just long enough to prod her suspicion that something might be wrong.
But then, there’s a sudden scuffle from the direction of the basement, the flurried rush of a pair of feet scrambling to carry their owner up the stairs. In their haste, the footsteps fall much more heavily than usual, but there’s no mistaking the voice that accompanies them, calling a short plea for patience through the door—a voice which, while it does sound slightly frantic, carries no hint of anything more dire than Christine’s own regret at being late for the lesson. Tentative relief begins to unwind the tangled ball of anxiety in her chest, taking deeper root with the repeated beat of her friend’s footsteps, moving more fleetly than she’d have thought him capable of just a couple of days ago.
The door opens on a decidedly disheveled-looking Erik; if Christine herself hadn’t *just* heard the piano she might have suspected that he’d been asleep up until the moment she rang the doorbell. But none of that matters, really—not as much as the brightness in his eyes as they find her own; as the set of his shoulders, as he gestures her into the house, verging almost on *relaxed*. His wrinkled sweatshirt and rumpled hair don’t take away from how much *better* he looks than when she’d last seen him: tucked up in his electric blanket; tense and shivering, hardly able to stir from the couch. If he *had* just recently gotten out of bed, then so much better if it meant he’d had a good night’s sleep.
She returns his smile, her throat tight with the sudden realization of just how worried she’d really been.
The tablet is in Erik’s hand; Christine is grateful when he neglects it in favour of actually *speaking*, the cobbled-together blend of languages as familiar and comforting as her friend’s voice itself. Maybe—certainly—it isn’t the most efficient way of communicating; most people probably wouldn’t think it worth the gaps in understanding, or the simplicity demanded by two equally constrained vocabularies. But there’s something so precious in just *talking* to each other, no matter how simply; in *working* to make sense of each new conversation, weaving together an understanding worth far more than the sum of the words used.
Christine ducks her head, her own voice finally returning to her when Erik points out her new coat.
“Merci,” she says, grinning sheepishly at a spot somewhere in the vicinity of the third step of the upward staircase, pink tinting her face on account of the means by which the jacket had been acquired as much as the compliment itself.
If it weren’t a lesson she had already learned, she might have met his remark with one of her own—just to express how much closer to *well* he looks today, and how *glad* she is to see him so obviously feeling better. But she’s made the mistake of drawing attention to his appearance before, and it only takes a single glance at him now, his eyes turned self-consciously towards the ground, for her to think better of any such idea.
“Jag tycker mycket om den, Erik,“ she says earnestly, "Tack så mycket för den."
She can feel her flush return and deepen as she turns to reluctantly hang the jacket on one of the hooks by the door, revealing the rest of her new outfit; no matter how much Erik has said that he *wants* her to be able to buy the things she needs, she still worries that he might think of her when she actually *does*. "Och…tack också för dessa,” she says, self-consciously smoothing the hem of her skirt as she stands after removing her shoes; she doesn’t let the statement hang long in the air before pushing on to a different subject:
“Du—Tu. Tu…pas besoin…être désolé,” she assures, her tone more forthright than her halting words. “Inte mer än mig själv: jag *också* var distraherad…distrait,” she continues, with a sideways glance down towards the piano room and a small smile of amusement at her own expense.
-
ERIK
Her smile only gives him more energy, and his initial anxiety continues to melt away. She doesn’t even bring up what a mess he is; it only strikes him as she speaks that she is, really and truly, happy to see him. It’s not something that he’s used to feeling- he’s wanted here. It’s not relief, or surprise; it’s simple happiness- she had wanted to see him, him specifically, and she is glad to be here. It feels like so much to live up to, being wanted, but at the same time, Christine demands so little- she’s even thanking him, he realizes, again. He shakes his head. He doesn’t want her to feel as if she owes him something every time she buys a new item for herself.
“Ce n'est rien,” he says, waving a hand dismissively, and follows her glance down the stairs. He frowns, tight-lipped, and shakes his head again. “Tu as entendu? Jag är ledsen. Det är klumpigt.” If she had to hear him working that out, he wishes she’d at least heard a good part, where the music came easily, flowing like water from the tips of his fingers- she’ll have to see just what a mess it is soon, but he figures that he can at least start on some damage control. He motions to her to wait, and disappears for just a moment; he knows exactly where what he’s looking for is, in the bookshelf closest to the stairs. He slides a large accordion folder out from between books; it’s filled with pages similar to the ones downstairs, crumpled and scribbled out, but, at the very least, organized into sections. A black manila folder covers one of the compositions entirely, blocking even the edges of the pages from view. He sticks the entire thing under his arm and heads back down the stairs, motioning for Christine to follow him down to the basement. He is as ready to start as she is; he’s been playing all night, but it has felt like ramming his head into a wall. With her here, they can both make some kind of progress. And hearing her sing- it feels like exactly what he needs right now.
“Detta rum är en röra,” he warns her, pausing for a moment before he opens the door; it really is bad- paper just scattered everywhere, piles on the floor, on the music stand, some crumpled and some intact; he starts grabbing at them and stuffing them in an empty pocket of the accordion folder. “Jag är ledsen,” he mumbles again as he goes, his self-consciousness returning as he scrambles to make the room presentable again. The ends of his ears are red, and he knows his face is flushed. He is grateful for the mask once again. He does feel bad- he has invited her here, and she’s arrived to this mess. He loses track of time constantly, but it doesn’t usually matter. He never has appointments to keep with anyone, and Khan and Darius have lived with him before; they know how he gets when he’s working. They hate it, and it certainly contributed to them not living together anymore, but at least they know about it, and expect it. He has tried to present something more put-together to Christine, but here he is, dressed as if he just woke up and grabbing paper up off of the floor. He doesn’t want to look, but can’t keep himself from a furtive glance up in her direction, trying to gauge how she feels about the state of everything.
-
CHRISTINE
Only halfway-hidden by the mask, Erik’s frown is impossible to miss, his tone exposing whatever frustration might have been covered up by the dark, concealing fabric. But his bearing remains level, just on the right side of relaxed, the source of his agitation obvious but manageable. For once, the difference between self-criticism and self-deprecation is clear-cut and simple—and, other than a small quirk of her brow, Christine withholds any unnecessary apologies, even as her friend retreats briefly back up the stairs.
Erik’s steps are purposeful as he returns to the landing, carrying an over-sized file; she can only assume that it holds music for their lesson, and, combined with his clear eagerness to get back to his piano, a thrill of anticipation chases down Christine’s back as she follows him the rest of the way down the stairs. Though Erik pauses one last time before pushing the door open, a note of apprehension creeping back into his voice as he cautions her about the state of the room beyond, Christine can hardly hear it through her excitement—scarcely registering his words at all until she steps through the door and into a scene of mild chaos.
She lingers for a moment at the threshold, taken aback, as Erik ducks forward and begins shoveling up loose papers.
Her immediate thought is that the cats must have been involved—cats enjoy making messes, don’t they? Knocking things from tables and shelves onto the floor; climbing on top of and into boxes, with little regard for the original contents. Maybe Basile pushed over a box. Or three. Though that still wouldn’t explain the numerous papers spread across the top of the piano, nor those stacked haphazardly against the music stand, nor the pieces that no feline paw could have balled up.
For a infinitesimal moment, Erik turns his eyes from his flustered work, the subtle movement of his head catching Christine’s own gaze as he once more turns away; she wonders if the glance had been for her. Hunching low to the ground to grab a handful of sheets that have been scattered there, Erik himself seems to crumple like the pages between his fingers.
Even as her mind continues to struggle to wrap itself around a likely *reason* for the paper storm, she recognizes why he might *apologize* for it—and all of sudden she finds herself moving forward.
“Det är okej, Erik,” she says placatingly, bending to blindly scoop up a few scrunched pages of her own from under the piano, setting them on top before quickly reaching for a few more. “Oroa dig inte. Det gör inget.” Straightening, she smooths the sheets gently against the top of the piano, glancing at them first idly and then with increasing interest.
From the door, she’d been able to discern only the familiar repeating pattern of musical staves. Now, up close as she shuffles the wrinkled pages, she can see the countless markings that clutter the crisply-printed lines—snippets of untidy, half-written music, and even-longer, even-messier stretches of cancelled-out scribbles, all of it handwritten. The pieces of the puzzle fall into place like a resolving melody, Christine’s eyes flitting from the sheets in her hand, to the smattering of pages still on the floor, and finally to Erik and the steadily-filling folder that he still holds.
“Är det din?” she asks slowly, almost too embarrassed of being wrong to pose the question at all—but far more excited at the likelihood of being *right*.
-
ERIK
Erik grimaces at her question, almost sheepish. “Ah… oui,” he answers, frowning. The first of his composed music that she’s heard, and it’s an unfinished mess. Of course.
Finally, he gives in to the need for the tablet, too distracted by cleaning up to concentrate on Swedish. He pauses for just a few moments to type.
I used to write more often. I usually play without writing anything down lately. What you heard is unfinished and frustrating.
He thinks for a moment before typing his next sentence. He hasn’t played her anything but improvisation yet- the writing is all so close to him; he doesn’t compose over passing storms of emotion. These are the things that he lives in for some time, ruminates on for days or weeks, even years. With the amount they’ve already shared, though- with everything she knows about him- doesn’t she deserve what honesty he can give her? There are words he doesn’t know how to say, but he has always been better at conveying what he means by music. Before he can change his mind, he types out his last sentence.
I can play a real piece for you later today, after your lesson, if you want.
He hands the tablet over to her and goes back to the task of gathering paper; with both of them working, there are only a few more sheets to stuff into the accordion folder before the room looks presentable. It gets set on the bench next to him when he sits down in front of the piano again, moving as if to roll up his sleeves but thinking better of it at the last moment and simply adjusting them a bit further up his hands. In a better-tailored shirt, he doesn’t feel the need to roll his sleeves up. In a shirt like this, many sizes too large for him, the cuffs hang down and get in his way. It isn’t anything that he can’t work around. It isn’t worth exposing Christine to any level of discomfort, looking at the scarred and mangled skin of his arms for the duration of their lesson. She has already dealt with enough from him today, and he really only wants to start teaching her. In that situation, at least, he can work with some measure of certainty and confidence. He is ready to be back in control of himself and the situation.
-
CHRISTINE
When Christine looks up from the tablet, it’s with a smile, her head bobbing in an eager nod. The messy pages in her hand, the strained snippets she’d heard through the door, they’re intriguing enough on their own. But the thought of the folder, loaded with other compositions—compositions that Erik must consider to be more presentable, more representative of the work that she is so very keen to hear—the idea of getting to hear them, and to hear them played by *him*…the loose sheets on the floor instantly seem much easier to gather up, less distracting in the face of a far more tempting opportunity. Her friend, she discovers, has already returned to the task; she sets the tablet aside, hastening to follow.
Once the papers have been cleared, she finds her customary spot at the side of the piano, her gaze lingering one more moment on the large folder at Erik’s side.
Focused as she is on her thoughts and her hopes for today’s lesson, Christine almost misses the awkward movement of Erik’s hands—ghosting ineffectually over his wrists before shifting to tug at the ungainly cuffs of his sweatshirt—the inelegance of the motion standing out in contrast to his usual grace around a keyboard.
For a moment, she teeters at the edge of saying something.
Can she tell him that, late though they are to start her lesson, she wouldn’t mind waiting a few minutes longer, to let him change into a less cumbersome shirt?
Could she be that cowardly, that cruel?
Or can she tell him that he doesn’t have to worry about her; that she isn’t bothered by the sight of his arms; that he can roll up his sleeves if he wants to?
Can she *mean* it?
Her chest tightens painfully as she thinks of the last time she saw those arms, those terrible scars: Erik curled up in his bed, drugged and drowsy after the ordeal of his doctor’s appointment, too insensible to care—or remember—that he was wearing a t-shirt. Maybe it had only been the dim shadow that had allowed her to brave the sight, robbed of detail by the evening and the heavy curtains of Erik’s bedroom—but she *had* *seen*, longer and closer than ever before, and it had been *alright*.
And she’d *felt* them—felt *worse*—just days later, after Khan had told her the story of their origin. Gingerly, her fingers had traced the ridges that stood out beneath the fabric of Erik’s shirt, on his wrist, his shoulders, pressed against the length of her own slender arm as she half-embraced him.
But does it really matter what she had dared to briefly touch through his sleeve, when revulsion had overcome her in the very next moment? It had been too much for her: to *feel* the old wounds; to suddenly understand how they got there, and the brutality that they stand testament to.
She hopes that it at least matters that, in its flight from the horrors inscribed in Erik’s wrists, the haven her hand had sought had been within the cradle of his own.
Now sitting in front of her at the piano, Erik rifles through a last few papers, the moment slipping away in a silence that gradually becomes unbreakable.
Despite his sleeves, he seems comfortable enough. To say *anything*, to draw attention to such a thing that he has already clearly chosen to ignore, would surely be the most unkind choiceof all. What is there to do—for now, at least—but to pretend that she didn’t notice?
Her own movements awkward, Christine ducks away from the piano for a moment, going to retrieve her music book.
Music. That’s what *both* of them need.
Certainly there will be plenty of scales and warm-ups before they are able to get to any true singing, but she wants him to know that she came prepared: flipping quickly though the pages, she finds the piece that she’d been instructed to study several days before, holding it open as she finally addresses her friend and teacher.
“Jag studerade den. Je…je lis?” She shrugs, attempting to patch her grammar with an uncertain smile.

Top Places to Visit in Finland
Tumblr media
The last time Kati and I were in Finland, we were standing in 5 feet of snow looking for the Northern Lights.  It was a cold, bitter winter night and the only thing that got us through was eating reindeer stew along the road.  It warmed us up and kept us going.  But Finland is a lot more than just the Northern Lights.  Finland is a land of incredible lush green sights, long lakes, and vast seas. The country is home to a record 179,584 Islands and 188,000 lakes. The four main archipelagos in Finland are; Helsinki, Kotka, the Archipelago Sea, and the Kvarken archipelago - a UNESCO Heritage site. Finland is also famed for its robust health care system and highly efficient education system. But that's not all that this beautiful Nordic country has to offer. The country is a favourite destination with most folks living in Europe . Fondly  known as "The home of a thousand lakes" Finland is a magical treasure box filled with stunning and fascinating attractions! From the Northern lights to the magical winter and irresistible summers, it is undoubtedly a hidden gem waiting to be explored by both the young and old alike.     Why Visit Finland? Snuggled perfectly between Sweden to the west and Russia to the east, Finland shares certain traits with its Scandinavian neighbors. The breathtaking scenery, magnificent rugged coastline, snow-packed ski fields, and the winter Northern Lights. You can enjoy exhilarating activities such as dog sledding, chasing the Northern Lights, and swimming  across the Arctic when you visit Lapland during winter. In addition to the outdoor adventures, this Nordic country also has other enjoyable experiences in store for you! Think steamy and relaxing saunas, delicious cuisines, and trendy, stylish Nordic cafes. We have compiled a list of some of the most irresistible places you must see on your Finland tour.
Tumblr media
Finland is incredible during the winter, but this country has so much to offer year round.
11 Must-See Attractions In Finland
  1. Meet the Real Santa Claus in Rovaniemi
Do you have any idea where Santa Claus lives? Don't let anybody fool you that Santa Claus doesn't exist – yes, he does, in  Rovaniemi, Finland!  Doubling as Lapland's official capital and the secret entry point to the Arctic, Rovaniemi is undoubtedly one of the  most iconic tourist destinations. It's without a doubt the best place to launch and end your Christmas visit to Lapland. A must-visit attraction site is Santa Claus Village. This charming theme park encased in the snowy mountains of Lapland is Finland's alternative to Disneyland. You will have a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and most importantly, you will have the opportunity to meet the jolly man himself – Santa Claus! After chatting with Father Christmas, you can stop by Santa's post office and post a postcard to your loved ones back home. Then visit Santa Park, a magical place where kids can discover Father Christmas's Cave.  Experience the Ice Gallery, admire a series of incredible ice sculptures, and even take a tour inside Santa's toy factory. Other outdoor adventures include enjoying a reindeer sleigh ride, ice fishing, making snow sculptures, and exploring the surrounding nature riding a snowmobile. As evening approaches, spend your night at the Arctic Snow Hotel. While there, don't forget to sample out the Lap cuisines, and conclude your night relaxing in one of the incredible ice spas!
2. Visit the Polar Bears at the Ranua Wildlife Park
Nestled between the magical mires and wild but quaint forest lies Rauna Wildlife Park, an enclave of unruffled experiences mixed with the Arctic wilderness. The Ranua Wildlife Park offers enchanting experiences with Arctic wildlife, and the surrounding nature will take you to the fairytale world Of Snow-White And The Seven Dwarfs. From Rovaniemi, you can start your day driving down to Ranua Wildlife Park, about an hour's drive away. While here, check out the Ranua Zoo; this northernmost zoo pays homage to nearly 50 endangered Arctic animal species. However, the real draw is its polar bears. Be sure to say hi and take photos with Venus and Manse, the two beautiful polar bears living as a couple. Once done with polar bears, experience  a magical excursion in a coach drawn by horses through the whistling forest or a giggly reindeer sleigh ride. While enjoying the tour,  stop by the ecological wolfdog rescue center for a campfire lunch. Other notable activities include a snowmobile ride through the deep crystalline woodlands, or hike through a frozen and barren bog wearing your snowshoes.
3. Chase down the Northern Lights
Regarded as one of the world's natural wonders, visitors from all over the world flock to Finland every year in the hopes of snapping a photo of these awe-inspiring Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). The best area to witness the Northern Lights is near Kilpisjarvi. When the sky is bright at that latitude, the chances of seeing an Aurora are 80% percent. So three nights out of four! Those odds must be encouraging. During the winter seasons, the sun appears for a few hours, and the nights are usually very long. The Finns typically call this season "Kaamos." With these conditions, particularly in places like Kilpisjarvi, you can enjoy yourself joining the cross-country skying. Picture yourself skiing during the night while chasing after the Northern lights. It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a fantastic way to witness this magnificent phenomenon. If you are not a fan of skiing, don't worry, you can enjoy watching this magnificent wonder at the comfort of your bed inside a glass igloo. Nothing is thrilling, like relaxing under the stars and staying up all night watching as the Northern Lights dance in the sky above you!
Tumblr media
Seeing the Northern Lights is always a highlight. There are many websites which will tell you the best places and nights to go out chasing them.
4. Lighthouse Island
Finland's coastline has the largest archipelago globally. Naturally, you expect to see lighthouses by the hundreds all over the country's shoreline. The lighthouses have become a magnet for tourists, some with unique features to accommodate visitors willing to spend nights in them. The Bengtskär lighthouse is the tallest in the entire Nord region. It is a pretty magnificent sight to behold. Located on a spectacular Island, you can get to the island by boat, with the best possible season to visit between June - August. Make your bookings early in advance to secure your night stay. Bengtskär lighthouse has six rooms to stay in.  Söderskär lighthouse in Helsinki is a must-see. The journey to Söderskär is more accessible by boat, and it takes an hour to get there and about two hours touring the lighthouse. Activities include; climbing the lighthouse; you get to see the entire landscape from an aerial view. It's quite spectacular. While there, you can have a cup of coffee at the keeper's cottage adjacent to it.
5. Finnish Saunas and Lakes
Kati and I love to take a sauna.  We actually have two saunas.  One at home and we built one in the woods in western North Carolina.  There is nothing better and we actually give the sauna credit for keeping us healthy.  If you think thousands of Finland Islands are enough for one tiny country, there are over 3 million saunas and nearly 190 000 lakes in Finland. Locals enjoy saunas and have made it a favorite pastime. Finns go to enjoy saunas at least once a week. So when you visit, indulge as excessively as time allows you to have a relaxing dip in one of the great saunas.  Finnish Lakeland has the most summer cottages and saunas too. Experience swimming in winter and rolling in the snow around your holiday cottage.
6. Suomenlinna UNESCO Site
Finland has a record six cultural UNESCO World Heritage sites and one natural UNESCO World Heritage site. The Suomenlinna Fortress Island in Helsinki is a favorite tour destination in Finland. Added to the UNESCO Heritage List in 1991, Suomenlinna is an exceptional military architecture monument. The seven islands of Suomenlinna are comprised of old dungeons and fortresses in an inhabited district in Helsinki. To get to Suomenlinna, take a fifteen minutes ferry ride from the Kauppatori central market square.
7. Archipelago National Park
Archipelago National Park - a seascape filled with hundreds of islands! It is only 59kilometers away from Turku city. A convenient route to get to the park is through Kimito and Pargas. Positioned directly south of the city, The Archipelago National Park has a lot to give, from Viking settlements to fortified islands. Using Turku as your launching base, you can explore the park by either canoeing or cycling between the quaint towns, with breathtaking landscapes around every corner. You can cycle along the Archipelago trail to Pargas and Nagu islands, which offer an authentic archipelago life experience and a wide range of accommodation. While in Pargas, don't forget to pass by Art Bank for some fine art, then hop onto a boat and head out to Berghain, a fantastic comping site. If you don’t enjoy cycling, go for the Riverine route. You can opt for a kayaking adventure, or if you feel it's too much work, hop into one of the ferries available for a peaceful sightseeing day around the Archipelago Park. Notable areas not to miss include the Rosala Viking Village, the Military island of Oro, The isle of Bengtskar, and finally, the peaceful island community of Uto.
8. Bear Watching in Suomussalmi
For those who love bears, the best place to watch them is in Suomussalmi, a small region in Finland near the Russian border. There are approximately 1000 brown bears in Finland, but you are unlikely to meet with one while leisurely strolling through the forest. These brown beasts can smell you from afar, and they usually flee before your paths cross. For the best bear-watching experience, hire a local guide. The guides are familiar with the forest and know where to find these beasts.
9. Try Out Finnish Cuisine
Whether it's in the summer or winter, it doesn't matter which season; sampling out the authentic Finnish delicacy is a must-do activity for anybody visiting Finland. Finnish delicacies combine traditional and chic cuisine, with beef, pork, seafood, and reindeer as the primary ingredients. While strolling through Helsinki Old Market Area, you can start with quick bites, like Finnish Squeaky Cheese, Karelian Pie, and Rye Bread. Try lip-licking typical Finnish sauces with pancakes, Lapland bread cheese, or Riispurro (Rice Porridge) for a more severe breakfast. For lunch and dinner, you are full of choices. You can try out authentic Finnish meals like Pastry Macaroni With Beef Meatballs Smeared with Jam mixed with Mash Potatoes, Roasted Herring, and many other dishes. Lastly, beer lovers can try out local favorites such as Glogg Akvavit, Finnish beers, Finnish Vodka and Sima.
Tumblr media
Helsinki is worth exploring and checking out some world class restaurants.
  10. Oulanaka National Park
Oulanka National Park is widely regarded as one of the best national parks in Finland, and with good reason. There are a series of spectacular creeks that run through the Kiutakongas Falls canyon. It's a quick one kilometer  stroll from the parking lot, so you can have a swell  time hiking with your spouse or your loved ones.  Just below the waterfalls, several beautiful rope swing bridges spanning over the canyon. Outdoor adventures are the thing here, and even if you are not athletic, you will have a good time.
11. Finnish Glass Igloo
Finland is a land of extremes in terms of season contrasts. During summer, the sun stays up all day, and all night, in Northern Finland . This phenomenon  is known as  "The Land of the Midnight Sun." During winter, the opposite happens:  darkness fills the land, giving way to beautiful moonlighting, bright stars  and a romantic setting for a cozy night under warm fires. This time is known as  "kaamos."  During kaamos, it is not entirely dark,  the skies glow from the brisk  the moon, and the stars, reflecting an amazing view from the backdrop of the bright snow across the landscapes. The Northern Lights project  enchanting backdrops from the seashores. An exciting approach to  experience the Midnight sun and Kaamos is to sleep in a a glass igloo, out in the open skies. It’s a magical experience!   Our Final Word Finland is more than just a stunning European destination; it is mystical heaven on Earth that brings the human imagination to life. From the breathtaking sightseeing sites to the enchanted wonderland of snow and fascinating natural phenomena. Finland appeals to a wide range of tourists, including history lovers, nature-buffs, food lovers, and thrill-seekers. There really isn't a best time to see Finland.  Both summer and winter offers travelers an incredible amount of activities. Head to Finland and discover why it is rated as the happiest country on earth.

17 Questions for 17 People
Thanks @its-bianca for tagging me in this! Sorry it’s taken so long, we’re in a third lockdown and I’m pretty sure my body thinks that time no longer exists.
Nicknames: Kim, Kimbo, Kimberlim, Kimothy, Kimberley Dibberley (For some reason my family thought that a nickname based off Cat’s other personality from Red Dwarf, Dwayne Dibberley, was funny and it’s stuck with me my whole life), as well as KIIII (shouted by my sister when she was about 2 and couldn’t pronounce my name, my best friend now yells it when she wants my attention) and Kim-Kim by my Dad who refuses to believe I’ve grown up (beats Kimberley Dibberley any day)
Height: 5'9 - towering over most men is fun, I suggest it to all of you, I’d rather round it up to six foot, but I probs stopped growing at 20.
Hogwarts House: Well I got Gryffindor when I first went on that site, but being my goth self I had to take the test again until I got Slytherin - as far as I remember I had unicorn hair (or horn?) or something of the like in my wand but I’m not gonna fuel JK’s anti-trans pockets by visiting Pottermore ever again.
Last thing I googled: The soundtrack for Futurama’s Luck of the Fryrish episode, I knew Simple Minds were on it but I could’ve sworn Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty was on it, but apparently not. I spent a good half hour trying to sing it into google with their new song-analysis thing to no avail, so I ended up siphoning through all the songs Lisa Simpson has ever played on her Sax to find out what it was (I should be doing my dissertation proposal but my tutors haven’t got back to me yet so what can ye do).
Song stuck in my head: yknow wha I’m just gonna list the songs that have been stuck in my head so far today because it’s too many to be just one as I keep cycling through them (also gonna link them so you can see how garbo weird my music taste is)
Run - Joji Alive - Pearl Jam Clinging On For Life - The Hoosiers Tension - Avenged Sevenfold  Boots of Spanish Leather - Bob Dylan Nutshell - Alice in Chains Jaded - Aerosmith  The Sea of Tragic Beasts - Fit For an Autopsy
I’ll add my current favourite at the bottom too for good measure (Honestly I spend way too much time listening to music and I regret nothing)
Number of followers: Currently 85. I’ve got about 2k on my main blog but I’ve not touched that since July 2017.
Amount of sleep: Good lord, so I aim for 8 hours, sometimes I only get 5.5 or something along those lines, other times I depression nap during the day and can’t sleep at all, sometimes (like this morning) I’ll go to get up at a normal person time such as 9am when my body naturally wakes me up, but it’s so dark and gloomy outside and cold in my room that I just stay in bed and end up accidentally falling back asleep. 12pm gang rise up xo
Lucky number: 7
Dream Job: Hopefully I get somewhat successful in monetising my hobbies, I’m working on it all atm (I don’t know why but I really hate telling people about my plans because I’m deathly afraid they’ll mock me or do whatever they can to ensure it doesn’t happen, I’ve got this list of things I need to do for my own mental health sellotaped to my laptop stand that had things like when to clean the house, do my laundry, shower, exercise etc, and my old flatmate/friend saw it the other week and mocked me, so I haven’t followed it since and need to find some sort of other way of organising my life instead). But yeah, hopefully hobby based, I don’t want to be stuck in an office job all my life, and I want to leave the UK (although I don’t want to leave my family) so hopefully I’ll be successful enough to bring em all with me.
Wearing: Well I was gonna wear jeans and my Unus Annus longsleeve but I decided to go full kitchen witch and wear this black milkmaid looking dress with long sleeves that I’d bought for work when I got my thigh tattoo started (all the old men appreciated the legs but I didn’t make any more tips, oops)
Favourite song: My favourite song of all time would be The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony , the band formed at my college, has great meaning and has resonated with me since I first saw the music video after it was played at my Stepdad’s funeral in 2002. Weirdly enough on my last day of college, right after my last exam, I went to get the bus home - put my Spotify on shuffle (bearing in mind I’ve got 805 songs on this playlist) and this came on straight away. That’s probably not important to most people, but being pagan, I like to think that small things like these are signs from loved ones that have since passed. Not too happy that it’s used as the England Rugby theme because it gives me anxiety every time as though I feel like everyone hearing it doesn’t have the same emotional connection with the song as I do, but idk. I saw Richard Ashcroft live and he played this and I legit bawled my eyes out in public, safe to say I’ll try and hold it in next time. I suggest you all have a listen to the song or even watch the music video for it, it’s the most simple but most meaningful music video to me.
Favourite Instrument: I’m left handed and I had this Yamaha acoustic guitar that my stepdad gave me - and taught me to play when I was about 5, a few months before he died (it’s still weird to me that I had no idea he had cancer at that point and instead spent his last few months teaching me his favourite hobbies) all he had was right handed guitars, so he taught me to play Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters upside down on this 20 odd year old right handed acoustic. He hadn’t played upside down himself before but did it so I could see what he was doing. I remember sitting in our green living room on the couch with him moving my hands to the right position (I don’t know where my mum was in this scenario, probably in the kitchen). He’d brought this guitar with him the first day I met him, it was probably like 11pm but I was 4 and thought it was 3am or something, but I heard voices coming from the living room and had gone to investigate - there sat my mum and my stepdad having Chinese on the living room floor, laughing together, my stepdad saw me and had brought sweets for me and my brother for when we woke up, but he beckoned me over, gave me a lollipop, stuck a two litre bottle of tizer in front of me and told me to dip the lollipop in the drink and lick it (not a good idea as I would’ve been bouncing off the walls, but I think I must’ve had a sugar crash and fallen asleep). My mum had no idea he was coming as he’d sneakily been texting her, asking what her favourite drink was, her favourite food and flowers etc, after they met in a pub when my mum was at a hostel with my brother after my Dad had taken me. My mum told him that the council had given her a place and he decided to show up and surprise her with all her favourite things and play guitar for her after my brother and I had gone to bed, I don’t remember much time passing before we’d moved into his house (where my mum and her new husband live to this day), but they got married a few months later and I still can’t play that Metallica song (I did try to teach myself more of it though). I also had this black left handed Ibanez prestige that my Dad got me for Christmas about 9 years ago, I could play quite a lot on it but eventually just stopped. Very good at piano though.
Aesthetic: I’m not sure what this entails but I’m a sucker for neon/RGB/cityscapes and that type of malarkey. Also space. Love da space.  Also whatever Cornwall would be considered as. Cottagecore? I think that’s only an animal crossing related aesthetic but I’m claiming it nonetheless.
Favourite Author: I’m a big goth so it has to be Stephen King by default. I’ve got copious first editions of his books from the 70′s and 80′s that my Mum bought when she was a teen. At my flat I’ve got Carrie, Christine, Salem’s Lot, Misery and The Shining first editions and the others are in my room at my Mum’s house. I don’t tend to read for joy like I used to, or write for fun either but I’m hoping I do more in 2021. Currently reading The Outsider by King, it sounds eerily familiar to a novel I wrote for coursework in college in 2014 and I’m half pressed to think he’s stole my brain ideas. I’m watching you Stephen. Always watching. Always.
Favourite animal sounds: I don’t have favourite sounds, but my husky Nanook is my favourite animal because he’s dumb and I love him. Also Kookaburra sounds are terrifying and you all should go listen to what a koala sounds like. When I go to Adelaide (hopefully this year, if not next) I am NOT stepping foot in a nature reserve unless I’ve got an anti-kookaburra noise suit on. They obviously don’t exist so I’m gonna have to make one.
Random: I’m part of a viking reenactment group where they use actual swords and fight each other, and we have to basically sign our lives away when we join, to say that if we die, it’s not the groups fault. I don’t actually do the fighting though, I’m part of the villager group, so I do all the crafting and food making and most of the teaching when we do shows. I’ve not yet been to a show as I’ve had uni to go to, but my parents, sister and brother do - They stayed within Whitby Abbey last year during the Viking festival where everyone did the show and the adults got drunk round campfires in the castle grounds. Zacky Vengeance once complimented my shirt if that’s something. I’m also colourblind, got glared at by Liam Gallagher in the Liverpool Echo Arena parking lot and have too accurate a sense of smell.
Sorry this was so long, obviously I felt like word-dumping and my brain has a lot to say as I find too much meaning in these things.  Thanks again for tagging me! I’ve not got 17 people to tag as I don’t interact with anyone at the moment but I’ll come back to this and add people as the week progresses :)

How do you do it? How do you stay so motivated and keep...going at life? Sometimes i get that motivation/urge to go out there and work towards my goals but it always disappears in a couple of days, sometimes maybe the same day
so my commute to uni takes like, 20 minutes right? add 10 minutes for me to walk to the tram station, and 5 to walk to class. 35 minutes from my door to my classroom door. 20 minutes, let’s say, to shower (i usually shower at night so in the morning i just like, throw warm water on myself and scrub my face) and get ready (i try to lay my outfit out the night before so that i don’t stand aimlessly in my towel trying to figure out what to wear and if my crush on my rhetoric professor is strong enough to warrant THAT sweater). 55 minutes, let’s say an hour to be safe. if i have class at eight, i can afford to get up at seven, and in emergencies i can get all of the above done in 40 minutes (throw on jeans and a sweater over whatever top i slept in and slather on some lipstick bc i can’t leave the house without lipstick).
which is, you know, a sweeter deal than a lot of people have. i have friends who need to take the train from strassy b’s surrounding towns to come to uni, i also have friends who go to the gym before coming to class. me, i live across the city from uni but i can still wake up just an hour before class.
my alarm is set for an hour and a half before class though. now don’t get me wrong, i’m not one of those people who needs a million alarms set 4 minutes apart because i’m a chronic snoozer. a five-second ring of one alarm is enough for me to shoot up in bed movie protagonist style (or like, not do that if my octopus boyfriend is wrapped around me so that i don’t break his nose) and even roll out of it immediately given the situation (exams, parties in case it’s an afternoon nap, travel, appointments).
however, it’s the other 80% of the time that’s the problem. i got class at eight, my alarm rings at six-thirty. from six-thirty to seven i’m lying in bed, trying to - no points for guessing - “motivate” myself. but guess what? i’m already motivated. i know in my head what i need to do to achieve what i want, and i have that burning desire to do it, i unironically watch this every week. i’m like, FUCK. LET’S DO IT. LET’S DO EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE. CLEAN THE HOUSE (negative: it’s always clean and i’m not only neat/clean in general, but also a stress cleaner, so when i’m stressed i get more stressed when i see that my apartment is already in top condition. so i grab a toothbrush and start microcleaning. welcome to my twisted mind and hard-water-stain-free taps) BUY A STATEMENT PIECE START LOOKING FOR INTERNSHIPS SOMEHOW FAST-FORWARD ALL MY FRIENDSHIPS UNTIL WE’RE IN STABLE JOBS AND STILL HANGING OUT TOGETHER IN BIGGER APARTMENTS WITH BETTER BOOZE LET’S WRITE THOSE FICS (lol) AND FINALLY CLEAR MY BACKLOG OF ARTICLES I’VE BEEN WANTING TO READ SINCE LITERALLY 2015 LET’S MEMORISE THE ENTIRE SEMESTER’S VOCAB IN ONE GO LET’S START WAKING UP AT 5 AM LIKE ROBIN SHARMA TOLD ME TO AND MAKE A SCHEDULE SO THAT I USE FACE MASKS REGULARLY AND SEE MY SKIN GLOW AND DRINK TWO LITERS OF WATER A DAY NEVER FORGET MY MEDS (lol) REDO MY BUDGET TO BUY HEALTHIER THINGS DONATE THE CLOTHES I PULLED OUT OF MY WARDROBE LAST WEEK TELL MY BOYFRIEND I LOVE HIM BUT WE’RE NOT GETTING A DOG BECAUSE I CAN’T STAND THE DOG SMELL, LET’S GET EDUCATED AND BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO KNOWS SOMETHING ABOUT EVERYTHING FROM EPIGENETICS TO ETHNOLINGUISTICS. LET’S DO IT ALL, RIGHT NOW.
then my six-thirty alarm rings. and i open my eyes, and i don’t need to ask myself questions from point zero. i don’t need to ask do i really want to do all that? because i know i do. what i have to ask myself every day is those things i want to do, which are worth the effort i have to make - do i have it in me to make that effort every day?
you can’t do everything all at once anon. it’s the most frustrating lesson i’ve had to learn. motivation makes you want to do everything all the time forever. it’s like my best friend in cali, who snorts a line of coke after a party so that he can clean the house. motivation is gonna make you jump out of bed and spend fifteen minutes making an Upbeat Playlist which can then play in the background while you do your dishes, clean your bathroom, organise your wardrobe - and then collapse on the floor. unfuckyourhabitat is one of my favourite blogs on the internet, and they have something very important to say about this.
you can’t do everything all at once. if you want to clean the house you’ll have to evaluate what needs cleaning, then see if you have supplies, acquire them if you don’t, and make a plan if everything’s a mess. if you want to buy a statement piece you’ll have to go through your wardrobe and see what you need, go through your budget and see what you can afford, go through online catalogues and see what you like, then clear some time so you can go out and get it - or more time if you want to browse. looking for internships - don’t even get me started. fast-forwarding friendships? sometimes the temptation of jumping ten years into the future and seeing if i’m still friends with the people i love today, seeing if i’m still with the person i’m with today, reaching that part of life where everything has become habit and dinner is with wine and there’s a fireplace in the living room - it’s so strong that the thought of having to live through those years to get there is excruciating. what do you mean i’ll have to live ten years, day for day, and slowly, painstakingly get there? what do you mean friendships don’t calcify in one day and i can’t decide today that that one friend i love is now my confidante and official best friend and we’ll do everything together? what do you mean you have to do everything together to get to a point where doing everything together is a habit. are u fucking kidding me.
i get it, right? all the things i listed up there - face masks, water, 5 AM, success, progress. they’re not one-liners on a to-do list. they’re concepts and they require something more than motivation.
you know, even rumi has something to say about this. first of all, i digress, but rumi has something to say about EVERYTHING and i really hate when people assume he’s some kind of over the top abstract vague philosopher. bro rumi was practical as fuck? he talked about sex and friendship and hangovers and life as we know it, so bizarrely immortal that it applies these centuries later.
rumi says: submit to a daily practice. your loyalty to that is a ring on the door. keep knocking, and the joy inside will eventually open a window and look out to see who’s there.
rumi also says: this windy mountaintop trough is ours. it sustains and protects, and you do not arrive here by just straining your neck to look at the mountain. you must start out and continue on.
but here’s my favourite thing that rumi says: it doesn’t matter that you’ve broken your vow a thousand times. still come, and yet again, come.
those things up there - Upbeat Playlist Number 29, buy-a-blender-make-frozen-smoothie-packs-stop-going-to-mcdonald’s-so-much, my-boyfriend-said-i-can’t-stop-him-from-buying-me-flowers - require more than motivation.
coming back to my six-thirty alarm. do i have it in me to make this effort every day? i want to do something with my life but this bed is warm, i’m tired, and it’s cold outside. it’s going to be a long, long, long day. do i have it in me to make this effort? i know i have the desire to make this effort, so why is it so difficult? why do i have to wake up half an hour in advance to negotiate with myself and coddle myself into actually getting out of bed and moving to meet my day?
motivation is 20% anon. the other 80% is sheer fucking discipline. say it out loud to yourself: D I S C I P L I N E. it’s not motivation that makes me live my life - sure, motivation starts the fire and i won’t lie, i have a lot of it, almost inexhaustible supply except for when it suddenly burns out on me without a warning.
which is why we need discipline. motivation can quit on you anytime - discipline won’t. motivation is i want to ace this english class, it’s easy as balls, i can do it. discipline is well, this english class i want to ace is at 8 AM and i’m not going to miss a single one. you don’t need to convince yourself of your life goals every morning - you just need to train yourself into fucking getting out of bed. submit to a daily practice, because you’re not going to achieve everything all at once. you’ll have to live every single day until you get there, and it’s a constant process, and when you have that process down pat, it’s the journey itself that’ll be rewarding. no need for instant gratification through sudden unexplained achievement of goals - your gratification is seeing your kilometer count stack up steadily, that odd “wow, you’re glowing these days!” from an aunt, the realisation that you chop salad so much faster now out of habit. wake up in the morning (feeling like p diddy) and take your fucking half-hour if you need it, but at the end of that half-hour, roll the fuck out of bed and give yourself finger guns in the bathroom mirror.
it’s not about motivation. i frankly don’t care if your motivation runs out in two days, or one day, or the fifteen minutes it took you to make your Upbeat Playlist Number 29. boo fucking hoo, anon. that’s how fickle motivation is. it ran out while you were looking for that one elvis song. so what’s going to make you clean your house anyway? not motivation, that’s for sure, motivation’s fuckin peaced out man. you don’t care about those dishes anymore, you’ll do them when you get back from uni (you won’t, you’ll order sushi and sit at your table).
you know what isn’t fickle? discipline. it’s discipline that’s going to make you clean your house. it’s discipline that’s going to make you wake up at 5 AM even if you’ve kind of failed four days in a row. keep knocking. keep working. still come, and yet again, come. you haven’t failed if you started trying to wake up at 5 AM last month and you did it maybe four times. you fail the day you turn that alarm off and give up on the concept.
motivation provides you with concepts - discipline provides you with the means to nurture those concepts. motivation is a high-resolution photograph of a beautiful oil painting. that’s all it is. discipline is the hour you put aside every day to sit at your easel and make it real.
today i want you to look for your willpower and gather your paintbrushes.
