Don’t think I’ll do any art or fic, but I’ve been loving what I’ve seen and read so far. Detroit: Become Human was a huge one for me and I still love checking in on the fandom from time to time and getting nostalgic. Also tonight’s news activated my Mass Effect lust. I remember leaving the theatre feeling like I had been irreparably changed, and one of the friends I was with was like “well that was fucking stupid” and I was like hmmm :) really now :) and then like the next month we weren’t friends anymore kjgkdfgf funny how that happened

12. Name one fact others may not know about you? Actually I think probably quite a few people know this, but I suck really bad at coming up with random facts about myself - I’m a wrestling nerd. Fucking love wrestling. I’ve been to dozens of shows, Raw, Smackdown, NXT, Ring of Honor a handful of times, and a few local shows because my brother’s old high school friend is a local indie wrestler. My favorite guy in the business right now is Hangman Adam Page (and yes, it’s partially because he’s fucking gorgeous)

13. Are you shy? Depends. There’s a lot of things I’m totally fine with doing and it can fool people into thinking I’m almost extroverted, but then like phone calls and knocks on the door literally break me out in a sweat and make my hands shake, and if I hang out with people I need like a week to recover, so... lmao

Biggest pet peeves: this is an IRL thing, but I have some audio processing shit going on, and then on top of that I fucked up my hearing in my right ear a bit at a Devin Townsend show a few years back (worth it? yes) and sometimes people’s voices can sound muddled if there’s other noises happening too. So it MAKES ME REAL MAD when people who KNOW THIS ABOUT ME will just go “no never mind it’s not important” when I ask them to repeat themselves.

aesthetic: blog - uhh purple. this is my least Refined space in that sense. fashion - kinda hipster-y? & recently very americana as i inherited some high quality clothing room/general life - i try for minimalist but it does not work the way i want it to. i have both fairy lights & led strip lights so that says something.

favorite author: hmmm this is hard but i’d say catherine m valente. all of her work is good, but space opera’s intended audience is young adults (in the actual, 17-25ish, sense of the words, not the meaning of the phrase) so that would be my recommended starting point.

favorite animal noise: when cats go “BRRP” at you. this is not the sound but it’s a pretty cat so i’m linking it anyway. this is closer, but i used to have a cat who did it with a more solid consonant at the beginning & spontaneously and it was the best thing.

random: oh fuck my entire life is an ecclectic mess depending on which section of the blog you’re in you could have a very different experience (i’m aware you’re prob reading this on the dashboard but it’s for the Emotion) of me but uhhhh i don’t believe birthday celebrations are fundamentally for the person with the birthday because when you try not to have one because that’s what you want people don’t let you and so it can’t be for you because it doesn’t matter what you want.

top five fics of 2020

i was tagged by @zukkaclawthorne to post my five favorite works I made this year.

so. I have only published five on ao3 because I just worked up the nerve October, so. Bear with me haha!

1. finding the worth that is hiding beneath

This is one that I actually haven’t posted yet (because it’s not done haha), but this is a little snippet from it that I posted! It’s pretty important to me because it’s the first time I wrote Sokka with Tourette’s Syndrome and, if I haven’t mentioned it enough times, I have TS so it’s very personal to me. This was / is just really fun to write in general! It was my first time writing Zukka and has some personal self-projecting moments in it and was the first thing I actually wrote for atla (I think I started it in April but then Dairy Queen overworked me to the point where I barely had time to think about atla unless it was what blizzard the characters’ favorite would be so anyways it’s far from done). It was also my first time trying to write this style for TS (I wrote a oneshot with Jay Ninjago having TS and I wrote that differently). Anyways, I’m rambling! This fic is just really special to me and I can’t wait to finish it so I can share it with friends and others with TS:)

2. threshold of eternity

oh boy did posting this one terrify me! Not only was it my first time writing for Azula, but also my first time writing for Mai, Jin, hints of Jinzula, as well as interactions between certain characters. I actually almost didn’t post it because I was terrified that it would be too ooc, but I guess it wasn’t because people told me they liked it and thought I wrote well for Azula (which made me mentally sob happy tears, so thank you!). I have the tendency to focus on certain characters and I do that with Sokka... a lot... so this was also my first time writing something with minimal Sokka (... he was still... he was still in it though oops) and this was a great opportunity for me to explore other characters as well as their relations! Plus, I love Azula and she deserved better. It was also the first oneshot in a series I’m working on and I wrote it all in three days instead of, ya know, doing homework... I would just sit in a dining hall and writexD

3. Deeper Than Words

have I not talked enough about how much I love Sokka and that I headcanon him having Tourette’s? Yes? I’m sorry, this one is also about that. I wrote this in like five hours one day when I was sad because of my tics and how embarrassing they are (and they aren’t! that’s something I’m still working on), so this was very heavily self-projection but to the extreme because I have never been in a situation entirely like what Sokka was in in this. Again, it’s very personal, I got to show Suki some love, I got to write some Zukka, and I got to give myself the words of affirmation that I desire but don’t have the guts to ask for haha. I’ll keep this one short and sweet! I’m just... rather proud of it:)

4. unruly heart

look. I love the musical The Prom. perhaps and unhealthy amount. but also, this was written from ZUKO’S pov and NOT Sokka’s, which is an accomplishment in itself for me! This one was... really really really hard for me to write. I had one and a half pages sitting in my google docs for, perhaps, two months before I literally said “screw it” and finished it in one day. I’m not sure why this was so darn hard for me to write, maybe it’s because I had to write for Ozai and mmmm wasn’t sure I could do that well. Or maybe it was because it wasn’t from Sokka’s pov or because I have literally never been in a relationship and I don’t know what it’s like. Either way, I knew what I was writing was right and I wanted to write it so badly. It was hard to write, but I won and managed to finish it:) (and go listen to Unruly Heart from the Prom).

5. we say that it’s a brotherhood

okay. this is, perhaps, one of the most abstract things I have ever written. It’s kind of funny, I was talking to Grace about it the other day and even she went “and you only mentioned Sokka a couple of times, I’m proud of you!” (that’s when you know you have a problem lol-- kidding, I was thinking the same thing haha!). I started this when I was sad. Now, I don’t remember why I was sad, but I was very sad so for some reason I decided to make Jet suffer... and then Yue... and then Suki... and then Piandao... Ty Lee... Kanna... Aang... but I’m kind of proud of it? It’s rather different compared to other things I’ve written but I like how it turned out:)

I have so many other atla wips in my google docs that I would probably have finished if I knew how to focus on something lol

1) who can out drink the other?

I feel like probably Felix? Janine’s not a super heavy drinker to begin with, and I’d think that vampire healing would make it take longer for him to get drunk? Idk, could be wrong

2) who says “i love you” more?

The actual words probably Janine. But Felix means that whenever he tells her she’s amazing/wonderful/the best person ever or any time he gives her something cool/that she likes bc it made him think of her, so they’re probably even.

3) who has trouble sleeping alone?

Once they’re really super serious(so, like, halfway through book three, lol) probably both. But I think Janine starts struggling with it earlier and Felix struggles with it a little more once it’s an issue.

4) who swears more?

Uhhhhhh..... They swear about the same amount, actually. It’s hardly every sentence or anything, but they don’t shy away from invective, either. ;)

5) who does more of the housework?

Janine. She’s used to doing it in her apartment, Felix isn’t horribly messy(and he thinks chores are boring), and she likes cleaning, so she really doesn’t mind.

6) who forgets their anniversary?

Pffft, neither. Not that they need the reminder, but that date’s circled on the wall calendar and marked in both their phones. But they remember without the help; they’re probably busy trying to give the best anniversary gift

7) who steals the duvet in their sleep?

Felix. Janine’s usually hot though, so there’s decent odds he stole it bc she shoved it off in his direction anyway.

8) who keeps the other awake at night with their snoring?

Neither of them really snore(Felix does a little, sometimes, but it’s really quiet and barely qualifies as snoring). Janine hums in her sleep sometimes, but Felix doesn’t really need much sleep, so he’s probably awake completely separate from her disturbing him and just lays there grinning when she does that bc she’s so adorable wtf.

9) who finds stray animals and begs the other to let them keep them?

I feel like this could go either way, but I’m gonna say Janine bc she loves animals.

10) who usually makes dinner?

Janine. Felix doesn’t need to eat food(vampire), and he’s a terrible cook anyway.(He’s TRIED for special occasions. The end result was not pretty). 

11) who plays their music out loud?

Both, but they have pretty similar tastes, so neither minds.

12) who hogs the bathroom?

Both, in shifts. Can’t rush perfection, after all. ;)

Hahaha, Felix, hands down. Janine’s hardly shy about complimenting him, but he never, EVER passes up a chance to tell her when he thinks she’s amazing or wonderful and sweet or talented or cool or-

14) who usually starts/causes arguments between them?

....I have no idea. I don’t even know what they would fight about.

15) who isn’t afraid to embarrass the other in public?

Oh, both. (Un?)Fortunately, they’re both really hard to embarrass. So they just wind up being goofy together and having a grand old time.

16) who gives the other cringe worthy pet names?

Felix, who calls Janine Minty for two days after he finds out her middle name is Araminta. She throws pillows or other things at him every time and finally threatens to never kiss him again if he doesn’t knock it off.

(it’s an idle threat and he knows it, but he still stops bc he can tell she’s not finding it funny)

17) who fusses over the other when they get sick?

Felix(who rarely if ever gets sick) absolutely DOTES on Janine whenever she’s sick. She has a pretty good constitution, so it’s not a common occurrence, but when it does he’s practically waiting on her hand and foot.

Janine gets super protective on the (also rare) occasions Felix gets seriously hurt. She will rip you apart if you hurt him, and then curl herself around him(yes, she is usually the big spoon when they cuddle) and be v reluctant to let go until he’s healed.

18) who finds it impossible to stay angry at the other for long?

Janine. Felix does occasionally take poking the bear too far, but it doesn’t happen often(at least for her), he doesn’t mean any harm by it and he’s always so sweet when he apologizes. She just... can’t stay made at him.

19) who clings to the other for comfort when they’re sad or scared?

Both, but Felix a bit more.

20) who is more ‘physically passionate’? (hugs, kisses, or maybe more…)

HAH. Both. These two canonically took like ten minutes to kiss goodbye at one point. xD They’re always hugging, kissing, sitting squished against each other on the couch or in each other’s laps, holding hands, etc etc Can’t keep their damn hands off each other. (We’re not quite to sex yet, canonically, though it’s probably not far off, and neither of them’s gonna be shy about that, either)

Last film I watched: Adaptation (Charlie Kaufman). Saw it at a friend’s birthday party, tbh I wouldn’t recommend it, the first half felt like it was two hours long and I have issues with how all the women were written, but it was very trippy and meta, I was emotionally invested in some things, and also Meryl Streep was there. Had a better time playing the banjo and and telling stories about primary school afterwards, but glad I saw it once. 4.5/10.

Things I love: MY FRIENDS, cats, music, writing, fictional characters, fair use, plants, old pretty buildings, bubble tea, musicals, standing near cliffs or on the top of valleys so you can see really really far, looking at the stars out in the middle of nowhere where there’s no light pollution, idk a lot of things XD

What brings me peace: Rewatching yugioh abridged/the scripted duels between Atem and Kaiba, watching a really amazing series or good character arc come to an end for the first time, listening to Critical Role, fucking around on an instrument I don’t really know how to play and slowly getting better, lying in the sun, watching the people I love succeed and thrive, getting recognition/validation when I’ve worked really hard on something, listening to ‘Bet On It’ from High School Musical 2 and imagining an incorporeal Marik Ishtar from the middle of Battle City running around a golf course

Meaning behind my URL: I’m pretty sure brightbriar was just a nice-sounding warrior cat OC name that I never made an OC for, and there’s a whole saga behind how it became my primary username for stuff, but essentially although it wasn’t my Original 2012 Username™ for everything, I wrote some RWBY fanfic under the name that got pretty popular on Wattpad, so it stuck!

PRESENTING. RANDOM DEEP DIVE WITH INDIGO-MUN AT 2AM ;

FIRST NAME Good fucking question… It’s (sort-of) currently Dylann! I was Kieran before that, though; it’s still used as one of my first names and I’m not used to Dylann quite yet bc I’ve just started using it. 

Indigo is one of my middle names though, and I’ve used it as an online handle elsewhere forever so I use it here now!  [ Fun etymology facts: Dylan(n) is a mythology name generally meaning “born of the wave” (aspiring diver & a water witch at heart). Kieran means “little dark one” bc of my love for horror, && I chose Indigo bc as a kid to be it was neither boy (blue) or purple (girl) and was both and neither as well as my absolute favorite color as this vibrant ass mystical color. ]

STRANGE FACT ABOUT YOURSELF hmmmmm…. I’m a horror lover at heart, so as a child (I wanna say 12), I was walking through an antique store (I have a few cool finds, I considered putting my other one as the fact tbh) and I turned the corner and I saw these two dolls staring back at me at the foot of the stairs of this antique building. my blood froze, and i felt my stomach drop. i got actual, physical goosebumps stumbling across these two creepy dolls staring back at me in the corner, and i couldn’t leave the store without them. perhaps the little painted porcelain boy would be somewhat spooky by himself if it wasn’t for the terrifying lidded gaze of the porcelain girl with the hairline fractures and slightly open lips. i cant look at her. i dont really find dolls scary, I like to find the spookier ones ones, and she makes me paranoid as hell. i keep her face covered and her up in my closet except for when i bring her out to show her off proudly as the spookiest thing I have but……. i dont really collect dolls anymore.  even thinking about her brings a fearful tear to my eye.  i don’t like to think about her for very long, but that’s why I’m so fucking proud to own her. ( YES — I’m THAT white person in the horror film )

No. Do I still own a copy I’ve had since childhood thru multiple dogs eating it, taking it to and from school, and highlighting and circling all the best parts of chapter one ever since I was a kid and it was too hard of a book for me to read? You bet your ass. If I ever need inspiration I just reread chapter 1. Although one of my other favorites was Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes. But White Fang is like, a weirdly personal text. 1. Do you have a strategy for writing dialogue?

uhhhhhh.... not so much. lolll i just try to make it sound natural and have a good rhythm to it. but i guess i don’t really think much about it other than trying to make it sound like something they’d say, if that makes sense? i’m afraid people who bother to read my answers to these questions are gonna be like “wow she doesn’t really think about much of anything ever while writing, does she?” noooo i really don’t. lol

2. Do you keep a note in your phone related to your fic/fics? What kinds of things do you jot down?

uhhhh i mean kinda. lollll i mostly keep a fic list in my planner, actually, but i also will brainstorm in chats in whatsapp and then i star the messages so i don’t lose them. other than that, i don’t really keep any notes in my phone. 

3. Who’s characterization do you think you have the best handle on? Does writing a particular one of the boys come easier to you than the rest?

Nicholas Grimshaw’s. Because he is the gay male version of me, i swear he is. lolllll otherwise I don’t really know? I mean, i feel like it’s a really opinion based subjective answer because we don’t really know them, so what i think is a good handle on their characterizations might have someone else reeling and upset lol that said, i do often find it easier to write from Harry’s pov as opposed to anyone else’s, but over time I’ve come to be comfortable writing from Louis’ too.

1. What’s a trope and/or pairing you love to read but haven’t tackled yet yourself, and why?

uuuuuuhhhhhhh that’s a really good question actually. i am not really sure? i LOVE fake relationship, friends to lovers, bed sharing, hybrid, abo, f/nf... oh! i know! i love royalty fics and i’ve never tried one of those! and same with regency fics. all the pairings i love to read i have officially attempted writing now, so i’m actually quite proud of that.

2. Which fic of yours are you most proud of and why?

i... this is mean. lolllll Goodness. I have a handful of fics that I’m actually really proud of. But one I’ll use for one of Anitra’s questions and another I’ll use for one of Michelle’s hahaha SO I’ll say the fic I’m most proud of is You Don't Care About Me (One More Night). There’s a lot of reasons why, for this one. One, it’s the longest fic I’ve ever written and I wrote it in something crazy like 3 weeks. Another is I have tried writing canon compliant fics in the past and they are SO FREAKING HARD. like SO HARD. And I promised myself I wouldn’t write another one, but I got this idea and I wanted to write it since I hadn’t found anything like it. So I took on the attempt to write a long canon compliant fic, and i did it! I also wasn’t sure how successful I would be with getting the emotions and sensuality across with this fic, because it’s a friends with benefits fic, right? but, i decided a few years ago i wasn’t going to write smut anymore. would i be successful in getting that across? the connection they have? the desire? the sexual tension? would people be able to feel the growth in the attachment between them as their relationship grows and changes and morphs without it? I didn’t even touch on all the reasons why i was concerned and nervous but also excited to write this fic that all come together with me being so proud of it. but in the end, it was SUCH a growing experience and such an incredible writing experience for me and in the end, i think i truly produced exactly the fic i wanted to. i think this fic is one i would thoroughly enjoy reading again later, and that i would love it. which is always my greatest goal, so yeah. i think my tomlinshaw fic is probably the fic i’m most proud of.

3. What three tips would you give to a new writer in the fandom?

oh goodness okay so let’s see here. 

1- get good support around you. i’m talking friends, cheerleaders, betas, just anyone and everyone. writing is hard and if you feel like you’re doing it alone it’s that much harder. so surround yourself with good, wonderful, and supportive people.

2- write what you want to read/write for yourself. i enjoyed writing the first few years i was doing it. it was fun being inspired by other people’s ideas and participating in a lot of exchanges where i was focused on the recipient and writing something for them. the year i wrote something like 42 fics was such a growing experience for me and i don’t think a single one of those fics was actually for myself. after that year i decided i wanted to focus on what I wanted to write and what i would like to read, and ever since i changed that focus in my writing, it’s changed entirely. i’m so much more proud of the fics i produce overall and i enjoy the process so much more because they’re for me. if they aren’t hugely popular, that’s okay. i like them, i love them, and that’s what’s most important for me. i’ve become so much more settled in my writing and just all of it since i made that change.

3- write often. it makes the biggest difference and makes things become so much easier if you do. it’s so hard at first, but you will strengthen those writing “muscles” and become such a stronger writer and narrator and just improve vastly the more you do it. so, write often.

1. Which of your fics do you wish more people would read? (Include a link please!)

You Try To Be Everything (I Need)! i know i know i know. it’s fantasy. those never get huge amounts of hits. AND it’s kinda future/dystopian. those ALSO never get huge amounts of hits. AND it’s a non-linear narrative which ALSO never gets huge hits. BUT I LOVE THIS FIC, OKAY??? it’s one of the top three i’ve posted this year that i’m most proud of and i ADORE IT. it’s one of my absolute fic babies. it FLOWED from me in a way i’ve never experienced before and i used symbolism! and visuals! and created a world! and took them on an epic journey! this fic is just. one of the best examples of how i can write as well. i loved how i was able to reveal information as it needed to be and was pertinent to the story. i feel like it gave a power to it that it wouldn’t have had without those flashbacks. and the art!!!! gosh the art that @hrrytomlinson did for it was just stunning. so yeah. probably that one. 

2. What are three of your favorite tropes to write? Why?

ooohhhh i LOVE writing friends to lovers. i think it’s the pining. i ADORE writing pining. probably because until my husband i had very few experiences that went past pining so i’m quite familiar with that in my own life lollll i also love writing disaster gay/humor fics. they’re so fun and also feel so relatable to my life. they’re easy for me to write and just SUCH A BLAST. and lastly i think... my other favorite trope to write is... meet cute. i just love writing that point in time when two people meet and immediately like each other and have to figure out how the hell they’re gonna ensure that they see that other person again. you know? i love those beginning stages so much! so yeah. i think that would probably be my other favorite trope to write.

3. Do you write side pairings in your fics? Which side pairing is your favorite? Why?

i dooooooo! i dunno if i have a favorite. i feel like i often rely on ziam because, well, why not? right? but i do have a LOT of fun writing shiall. there’s just something about their two personalities and getting to write them that allows me to be a bit silly but also just have fun and be cute and fluffy. so yeah. i guess maybe shiall. ooh but i do love a good rare pair of side gemma/niall as well hehe

1. Do you have a writing routine? What is it?

mmmmm i guess kinda? lolll generally i have a very hard time writing at home. if i’m at home i’m going to get interrupted by my husband or kids or parents. it’s bound to happen. either that or i’ll remember any number of five million things that i should be doing around the house instead of sitting there and writing, so overall i have to write somewhere other than home. i’ll shove all of my errands and chores and everything into a smaller time frame so i have a bit of time to myself that i can leave the house and write for. whether that time amount is just 20 minutes or 3 hours, i’ll go and get set up (usually at starbucks or the library) and i’ll check in with any number of people or chats and let them know i’m writing. i’ll give them a starting word count, the fic i’m working on, and when i’ll be checking back for accountability. i then write like the wind. often, i’ll have a playlist going in the background, but not always. then when my time is up, i’ll check back in with the chat and share my ending word count so i can see how much i wrote that 20 minutes/hour/whatever and then i’ll also usually share a snippet so they can yell at me in excitement and help me stay excited too. and then rinse lather repeat until the fic is done! soooooo yeah. if that counts as a routine, then that’s my routine. haha!

2. Which of your fics was the most challenging to write? Which was the most fun? Why?

oh goodness, there have been a few that were difficult as fuck to write. i think the one that was the hardest was probably I Don't Mean to Frustrate. it was for an a/b/o exchange and i got three prompts that i just... was not really comfortable with tbh. i wasn’t sure any of them were tropes i could take on or i was not emotionally equipped to handle, which left me with a canon compliant prompt. i LOVE reading canon compliant a/b/o fics, but i hate writing canon compliant as i think i’ve said before. because of that, it felt like pulling teeth. i wanted to be sure that i was holding true to their schedule, i wanted to be sure i was sticking with what we knew of the band at that time etc but then mix things up a bit with the a/b/o dynamics. i think i just put a lot of pressure on myself and didn’t feel confident in it and that just made it suuuuuuuper hard to write. i do like it now, but it was really hard for me. the most fun? oof uhhh probably I Like Digging Holes. That fic is so self indulgent. i was meant to be writing at least another two or three other fics that actually had deadlines and instead i saw a silly interaction that grimmy had with an instagram person and i had to write it. something ridiculous like two days later this fic was posted and it was just a blast to be ridiculous and over the top and silly. 

3. Do you make playlists to write to, and if so, do you ever share them when you post your fics? Which fic’s playlist do you enjoy most, and why?

sometimes? if there’s a fic that has a really specific vibe i’m looking to channel in it then i will and USUALLY i’ll link them in the author’s note for the fic, but i don’t do it very often. generally the playlists i listen to as i write are just the ones i’ve made most recently of music i’m currently enjoying. that said, i do really love the playlist i made for my 50s direction fic (A Word We've Only Heard), because i made sure it was all era appropriate and it was the music that had inspired that fic in the first place, so yeah. you can find the playlist here, if you’re interested.

1. Which fic of yours holds a special place in your heart?

I have a little list of my fic babies mentally that i have, but the one from this year that i’m most proud of and is special to me that hasn’t already been talked about is The Only Thing That Keeps Me Grounded. i feel like i’ve talked a lot about it, but there were a lot of emotions and self realization moments and just... i tried really hard to make it true to those who identify as polyamorous. i think i really hit that on the head with that and made it so it’s a fic that actually can be relatable and others can identify with whether they’re poly or not, and because of all those things, it’s just really special to me.

2. Is there a pairing you refuse to write?

mmmm no? i mean there are going to be some pairings that i find more difficult, but if there’s anything that i’ve learned over the almost five years i’ve been writing in this fandom, it’s that i can write pretty much anything i set my mind to. i just might not enjoy it as much haha

3. What do you prefer Fests or challenges more?

i... dunno? lollll i love a good fest and a good challenge, so i guess it just depends on what the challenge or the fest is as to whether i prefer one over the other. haha!

unpopular opinion: my reading of 118 is that he knew that, he expected that, hurt like fuck but he was fully prepared and a part of him still completely in control and calculating and estimating time the entire time. Like, he needed a minute to get back up, but yeah, that went as planned. He’s taken by surprise by the mention of Jon because that seemed way too insignificant and obvious to him to be an option.

Too many to count... but lately, I’ve been into DJing and mixing music! I’m trying to save up for my own Dj controller and maybe trying to DJ at an anime convention??? Still working on that lol 

Aside from my current hobby, I like anime, music (listening to and writing), art (looking at and making), dancing (anyone else still doing the shuffle?!), and oh my favorite SLEEPING.

Currently, I have one goldfish (if you’re wondering how big he is, just think about the goldfish in Dagashi Kashi) and 3 koi fish! Goldfish is named Frank (for Papa Franku if you know, you know). As for the Kois...One is named Miyagi (cause he has cute little whiskers!!!) and the other two I haven’t named yet LOL. 

what sports do you play/have you played?

I typically don’t do any sports, but since joining college I’ve been into Volleyball! I switch between spiker and setter and I’m more comfortable setting (less jumping means less tiredness LOL)

I’m probably somewhere between 5′ 5″ and 5′ 6″????

favorite subject in school?

Does lunch count??? Hmm.....Well right now I’m taking a Japanese Architecture course which is really interesting (we’re learning about Japanese culture and how that influences the way they design buildings and space) but I’m also enjoying my photography class (learning how to use my camera is actually a lot of fun!)

dream job?

A director of some sort? I’m currently working on a game project with a number of friends @turtles-island is doing the artwork for it! And it’s really fun to work together with other people to create something meaningful and fun to play! I’ve had to stop production on it because I’ve been so busy with school. But once I graduate and get settled into my job I can finally pick it back up!!

August 11, 2018. Manchester, New Hampshire.

After seven hours on the road, pausing only to explore an Old Ones cult site, storm a terrible castle, and eat distressingly dry corned beef at a Greek diner that still advertised one of their menu items as “Michael Jackson’s favorite grinder”, we were in dire need of respite.

Establishing a forward operating base was our first priority. For my part, I can sleep anywhere. My bonfire days in the Frozen North frequently necessitated pitching a $10 K-Mart tent over gravel, then drinking bottom-shelf whiskey until you didn’t realize you were sleeping in a puddle of rainwater and broken glass. That’s not a knack you lose. It’s like riding a bike. The Girl was always more discerning, and became doubly so after our experience in Phoenix with the inept criminal front halfway house hotel. We agreed that she can veto any of the lodgings I book. Sometimes, late at night, I’ll hold a flashlight under my chin and tell her spoOoOoky stories about hostels in Ireland.

She insisted on the airport Super 8. I was hoping to stay in a quaint deep woods motel called “Unsmiling Jed’s Sleepaway”, attached to sister business “Unsmiling Jed’s Discount Plastic Surgery Silo and Chili Kitchen”.

If I can’t protect it, I don’t deserve to have it. That goes double for life.

A friendly foreign woman checked us in at the Super 8, then proceeded into utter bafflement when I asked for a first aid kid. I chewed myself up pretty good climbing Bancroft’s Castle, and I’d spent the last half hour bleeding into an oily dog blanket to avoid ruining my upholstery. I’m pretty sure that’s how plagues start.

There were no band-aids here, or antiseptics, or possibly medicine as a concept. There was a three gallon tub of hand sanitizer. I thanked her for the offer but gently declined.

We went up to the third floor. The hallways were lined with people sitting on the carpet outside their rooms, shouting and smoking cigarettes. The room itself was clean and the air conditioning worked. All my boxes were checked. The bathroom reeked of weed, which some would interpret as a bonus. I scrubbed my wounds raw in the sink, tucked away the precious cargo of wine and peaches, and set out to investigate downtown Manchester.

Streetlight technology has not yet made its way to Manchester, so we spent twenty minutes missing exits in ocean-floor darkness. It looked worryingly like Wilkes-Barre, which is not where one would choose to vacation, were one sane.

Downtown erupted from nowhere like graphic pop-in on a video game running at its lowest resolution. One second you’re in leatherface country, with nothing breaking the abyssal darkness but the occasional half-broken Jiffy Lube sign. The next, you’re on vibrant neon market strip, replete with hipsters and the homeless.

We knew we had hit downtown proper when we passed by the “craft grilled cheese bistro”.

Since I am an adult man, grilled cheese cannot be dinner. Both “gastropubs” we tried, despite their bitchin Greek mythology names, offered generic terrible burgers and a draft list that consisted of Coors Light.

“I’m so hungry,” the Girl told me. “I’m gonna die.”

“We all will,” I assured her. “Soon.”

Yelp claimed there was a brewery five blocks away. We walked off the only lit street, into absolute, encompassing blackness. It would’ve been spooky if I didn’t always kind of hope some Putty Patrol mook would lunge at me from the dark while I’m far away from home, having told no one where I’m going and left no paper trail.

There were no incidents. No one was murdered in self-defense. No one knows what we did last summer. The Stark Brewing Company was in the basement of a grim looking office complex, and it was vacant save for two other wanderers.

We sat at the bar and ordered a flight and an imperial stout. I was pushing for finding an actual restaurant, but the Girl ordered “Penne with vodka sauce”, which was not the right color, flavor, or texture to be anything but penne bolognese. The Girl didn’t seem to mind. I ate a pulled pork sandwich.

The beers were warm, but I didn’t care. It didn’t matter what the beers were, so long as they were beers. And not Coors Light. The brewery themed all of their beers off of dogs, for some reason, which I believe to be the ideal business model. According to the bartenders, the brewery had been open for 25 years, but hadn’t yet received their big boom. I was outraged. The beers were excellent, and would probably be even better if they weren’t room temperature, and the taps were not only named for specific dogs, but also provided pictures.

To say nothing of the bathroom, which was covered in sharpie beer lore.

The bartender and waitresses swore a lot more than you would normally expect in this context. The Girl maintains they were swearing at us. I disagreed.

“They were swearing <i>with</i> us,” I mansplained.

“We weren’t swearing,” she countered.

“But if we HAD been.”

As I’ve grown larger and more sinuous, I’ve tried to cut back on how often I cuss at strangers. Cultural relativism is the understanding that not everyone grew up among the coalcrackers, and good-natured oaths like “how the hell are you” or using the fuck-word as a conversational placeholder, while subjectively soothing, can set off fight-or-flight in the small, soft, and bourgeoisie.

I try to maintain direct proportionality between my barbarism and my well-heeledness. Neither the wait staff nor the other two customers shared my bond, and the middle-aged guy on my right proceeded to tell me how his hometown of Denver, Colorado is the greatest fuckin’ city in America, next to maybe Southern California. Which is not a city.

We talked about our homes and travels for a while, then I got my pulled pork sandwich and they left. The sandwich was slightly warmer than the beer, which beat the alternative.

An armada of children came into the bar.

“Oh, shit,” the woman tending bar said. They were visibly teenagers, and on the wrong side of it. They had that gangly awkwardness you get around fourteen or fifteen, and if they were trying to play it off, they were woefully bad at it. There were also nearly twenty of them. It looked like a field trip.

People in their twenties don’t travel in packs of more than six. It’s hard to transport a throng, unless you have a party bus, and why do you have a party bus when you’re twenty-eight? You’re twenty-eight and party buses have always been sad. Get a job. Also, it’s hard to get that many adults to agree on something.

It can be done. You can say, “Hey, adults, you want to do some drugs?” And in a sufficiently sized crowd, you’ll manage to pull twenty or so who will follow you to your house or whatever. This is called an “afterparty”. It doesn’t go to bars at 9pm.

Have you felt out the social zeitgeist recently? Look at a random handful of current memes and it’ll be pretty clear that most adults consider socialization to be a required burden, like paying emotional taxes. “Going out” is the price of living in a civilized society. You’re not going to scare up twenty people, then put them in a party bus, then take them to an abandoned bar half a mile outside of where the actual nightlife is.

“Hey, we’re just about to close,” the bartender said.

A reedy blonde in a top that seemed to consist mostly of straps screeched, “But your WEBSITE said you were open til ONE!”

Screeched.

The bar fell silent. Well, more silent. The Girl and I traded looks, her horror for my delight.

“Uhhhhhh,” the bartender said, but with excellent elocution, as though that were the word she had deliberately chosen. “Okay.”

They sat the itinerant mall food court in an enormous corner table, whereupon they requested shots.

The waitress who had sworn at/with us the least came back to the bar and said, “You guys said you were from Pennsylvania, right?”

We nodded.

“Can I see one of your licenses quick?”

She compared mine against the obviously fake ID one of the tweens had given her. After a moment she said, “Yeah, you can see, the font is different. And the picture looks like it’s photoshopped.”

“Yeah, no one’s license picture ever looks this good,” the Girl said, studying the fake ID.

“Except mine,” I added. They ignored me. I didn’t take it personally.

The waitresses disappeared into the back. Five minutes later, the only dude working at the place was gendered into being the bad cop. He sulked over to the teens.

“You guys gotta leave,” he said. “We know your ID’s fake. We’re not trying to get fined. You gotta go.”

For maximum accuracy, imagine this said in Toby’s voice from the Office. Shamefaced, the flash mob of children dispersed.

We paid for our room temperature beers and left the poor, foul-mouthed brewery to close at 9:30 on a Friday. The Girl and I accidentally stalked the battalion of teens through the street, but only because we were all moving back toward the only lights in the city, not unlike moths. They turned a corner and vanished, presumably to find an arcade or laser tag or some sort of large carousel.

The Girl and I followed the sounds of some obnoxious bros announcing, “It’s like a fahkin sketchy ally, dewd”.

It was, in fact, the least sketchy alley I’d ever been in. Cat Alley was the best lit venue in all of New Hampshire. It was clean and well-maintained, and it was covered less in graffiti and more in an outdoor art gallery dedicated to cats.

There were more, but they didn’t all warrant a picture.

Portland Pie Co loomed from the endless darkness like a beacon in the night, hearkening back to those days lost in Maine during the Great Lobster Drought of 2017. We split a bourbon barrel ale which did me in. It was bedtime.

On the way back, toward the end of the main drag, a man made of pure light rode by blasting EZ-Listenin from his Tron bicycle, also made of pure light.

I can’t prove he wasn’t Jesus.

Heartened, we returned to the hotel, where no one was smoking or yelling in the hallway anymore. Excellent.

Next stop, Portsmouth.

1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?

hahaha. i’ve been stuck with “skitty” as a name since 05, but i went from “digital skitty” to “skittidyne” when i made the jump to tumblr. i wanted something that wasn’t my “professional” name, but could still be skitty-ish, and so i decided to throw some persona into the mix, because that’s how i be. 

“skitty” is a pokemon and the “-dyne” suffix is the highest tier of attack spell in the persona series. and it looked better with an i rather than a y. so i guess i’m the highest tier of skitty spell!

2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/subscriptions/hits/kudos).

pedestal hands down. (bbac isn’t even half as popular by any of those categories.) 

3. What is your AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?

it’s ryoji from persona 3! i chose it because... i love ryoji... even when i was drawing regularly, i rarely used my own art as my icons anywhere, except dA or actual art-hosting sites. 

4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?

oh god i know i’m going to leave people out, and I LOVE YOU ALL, but beechichi liveblogs shit to me on twitter, curiouslylazy leaves me comments longer than chapters, greatdanesandpandas leaves me amazing capslocked comments across several of my stories, haruhi02 and rd both leave AMAZING liveblog type comments on bbac, and unexpectedly but delightfully like every commenter on the kamafuta fake dating story is like, so kind and nice. (upside to writing a rarepair!) 

but i love all of my commenters and there are LOTS i’m missing here and trust me i do notice who comments regularly and across several stories ;;

ghost story, character development, sayuri, a heart swelled to bursting, settling down, the thirty-six stratagems of wáng jìngzé ... a lot of smut fics... (a lot of smut fics)

211 subscribed to, and 112 bookmarks on ao3! 88 bookmarks on ff.net.

7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?

i mean. bbac, i guess. i like things with a magical slant, but i don’t ever stick around the exact same universe for multiple stories?

9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are afraid of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!)

hmm. i’d love to write a mafia/yakuza au one day, but i’m not sure i’m afraid of ppl judging me. i think i just don’t want to do that much research. i’d also love to write a sugaring au one day, if only out of PURE BITTERNESS, but that’s a lot of smut to write, and i’m afraid i’d probably start fights in the comments section. 

there’s not a lot i’m more scared of writing compared to other things, i guess. 

10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.

commenting! leaving comments would be nice. truthfully, i’d like to work on my personal self-discipline when it comes to writing and getting things done, even though my output is pretty high imo. also, i guess romance writing. 

11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?

uhhhhhh. i never purposefully do either, and in naruto fandom i spent some time in rarepair hell, and apparently kamafuta is a fuckin rarepair so i’m again sitting in that lonely little boat, but i also tend toward more popular ships in hq fandom, at least. both? probably popular ships?

uhhhhhhhhhhhhh. if we’re going to get technical about it... 

counting side story collections as 1 “story”, i got: 

61 on googledocs, 16 more on my harddrive.

14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?

i ABSOLUTELY keep them in my head. if i start writing ANYTHING down, even if it’s notes or title ideas or character ideas, i know i’ve already lost the war, and i’m committed to writing something.

yep! oh it puts the heart in my chest on wings was with the amazing @h-lovely and where the wild things go was with the lovely @kaiyouchan!

also, technically @tarotdactyl is listed as a co-author on operation: poison tree frog, because it’s his fault, but i’m technically the one doing all of the writing for it. for some reason

i mean, i was on lj and ff.net. things migrated. i don’t remember specifically how it happened. 

17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on AO3?

shrug emoji... i suppose i am? i think i still am in pokemon fandom, i know i’m not in naruto fandom, and i don’t even know anymore in hq fandom. (i guess only hq fandom matters on ao3)

18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?

skittens!! 

19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?

@avoidingavoidance and @silvercistern are #writing goals, and while she’s only just writing now herself, my mother has always been a devoted supporter of my writing. past that, it was just reader feedback that kept me goin’ onward. 

20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?

KEEP WITH IT. COMMIT TO YOUR IDEA. there is no such thing as a bad idea, and even “bad” ideas, if committed to, can turn into FANTASTIC stories/characters/arcs. absolutely keep going, no matter what. 

21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?

both, haha. i’m trying to get outlines more and more these days, mostly because i guess i’m working with others and for some reason they can’t read my mind. hm. 

22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?

dude, i was in the pokemon fandom when farla was still around. 

yeah, i’ve gotten things that could be considered “flames”. i’ve accidentally started a ship war, and i’ve gotten nasty shipping-related comments on stories, too. hell, i’ve fought with readers over that sort of thing before. 

i’ve also had rude commenters, commenters who probably just didn’t know any better, and commenters who missed the point so badly i had to go scream into a pillow. it happens. 

for the most part, i try to respond to comments/reviews, because that’s how i was raised on the internet. i try to be polite and pleasant these days, but i’ll put my foot down. i try not to be rude or mean, though. 

23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)

smut. it’s always goddamn smut. 

romance in general, though. i’m good with the emotional intimacy and casual physical intimacy, but half the time i end up with more of that between the best friend characters than the ships, so... i dunno. i’d like to be more comfortable writing romance, up to and DEFINITELY including smut. 

24. What story(s) are you working on now?

bbac, political intrigue, magical girl au, fake dating au, and a couple of random oneshots. 

25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?

look, i ain’t happy if i’m not juggling projects. so i guess that’s a given. 

26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?

only during nanowrimo! some days, i don’t write a word, and other days, i’m easily in the thousands. i’m content with either, because i can only force it so often. 

27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?

absolutely. even when it feels like i’m stagnating with that dreaded 67-75% of the story completed zone, i know every word i write betters me as an author. 

28. What is your favorite story that you’ve written?

oh man, that’s so hard... mostly, that comes down less to emotion, and more to “what was easiest for me to write”... 

maybe pedestal. but maybe only because i’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, and it’s easy to love a story once it’s completed.

trying to keep momentum... actually, probably, forcing yourself through a scene you KNOW has to get done and you even know what happens in it, but it’s just not happening. bleh.

nah, it’s to share stories with people. i like ideas, i like turning ideas into bigger ideas, and i like people’s reactions to those ideas. it’s like friendship sharing except i don’t have to be social! <3

1) How many works do you currently have in progress?

Ha. Haha. Hahahahahha.

Okay, let me count them all. Duality (main + D&D side-story, ongoing.) Horror bang (waiting on revisions.) Galra bang (75% done with first draft.) Supernova bang (~10% done.) Another Voltron thing (in the planning stage.) Scops & Co (ongoing.) Plus an idea I have mostly planned but haven’t started writing yet that’s probably going to be for the Hunk bang next year. And some original novels that I’m going to get back to one of these days, I swear. So 7 active WIPs at the moment?

2) Do you/would you write fanfiction?

Yes I do! (Obviously, given the above paragraph.) I adore fanfiction and will defend it both as a valuable way to build writing skills and as art in its own right until the day I die.

3) Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?

Paperrrrrrrr. I’m sorry, but I love the smell of books, and I stim on the pages as I read. I have ebooks of things that aren’t available in print, research type books, and a few others, and I’ve gotten really into ebooks the last year or so because I’ve been listening to so many podcasts at work. But physical books will always be my true love.

4) When did you start writing?

I’m not actually sure? I wrote my first complete short story for a class in fifth grade, I remember that. (Two stories, actually: a standard portal fantasy story called, “Into Eltania,” which only needed to be three paragraphs and ended up at six pages, and “The Life and Times of my Talking Pencil,” which ended in the narrator murdering a sentient mechanical pencil. My teacher was concerned.) I know I was writing before that, though. Some fanfiction in my diary (notably Star Wars and Transformers), a few feeble attempts at original fiction, including one that I think was titled “The Friend Ship” in which I described a tree house and the people inside and then realized they were going to have to talk and ragequit.

I started writing consistently in high school, which is when I finished my first novel (which was kiiiiinda a mess, but hey. That’s the learning process, right?) And I’ve never really stopped since, just flipped between fanfic and original works.

5) Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?

@survivorofhighstorms is the first person to know about my stories and often the first person to read them.

6) Where is your favorite place to write?

My house. I mostly write on the couch, but I sometimes move to my bed or the kitchen table if I need a change of posture. I occasionally go to the library to write, and I write a lot on my lunch at work, but I prefer to be home where I’m comfortable and not worried about strangers looking over my shoulder. (Social anxiety, folks. It’s awesome~)

7) Favorite childhood book

You expect me to pick one?? Based on sheer number of rereads, it would probably have to be either the Jedi Apprentice or Young Jedi Knights books. I read both series in their entirety at least twice a year for a good 4-5 years.

8) Writing for fun or writing for publication?

Primarily for fun, but I do want to pursue publication once I get at least one of my current manuscripts into shape.

9) Pen and paper or computer?

Primarily computer. I write by hand when I’m out of the house, and I find planning by hand to be a little bit easier most of the time, but for actual writing I prefer to type since it’s a billion times faster.

10) Have you ever taken any writing classes?

I took a creative writing class in college! It was only one semester, but it was really helpful, especially with learning to plot and to create compelling characters, and since then I’ve taken the initiative to go out and teach myself more about the craft.

11) What inspires you to write?

Oh, lots of things. People, places, random shower thoughts, pure unadulterated reactance. (Seriously, I came up with an entire series purely because I once read a piece of writing advice that boiled down to, “Don’t kill a character in the first chapter. No one will care.” And I took that as a challenge.) It’s hard for me to track where a lot of my inspiration comes from because any given piece probably has about a dozen different seeds that have all come together, not to mention little strings of inspiration that flesh the whole skeleton out.
