#HorsePower - Opel Astra electric
The Opel Astra’s modern styling hasn’t been altered in the fully-electric version, and that’ll appeal to some buyers – not everyone wants an electric car that looks radically different.

U.S. Gasoline Prices Rise Ahead Of Labor Day Weekend
Tumblr media
According to a statement from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Thursday, the average retail price of regular gasoline in the United States has surged by 6% in the last five weeks leading up to the Labor Day weekend.
On the Monday preceding the Labor Day weekend, which was August 28, 2023, the average retail price for regular gasoline stood at $3.81 per gallon throughout the United States. This recent increase of 6%, equivalent to $0.22 per gallon, can be attributed to a combination of factors, including oil production reductions by Saudi Arabia, limited inventories of gasoline within the U.S., and the announcement of maintenance plans for refineries in the U.S. Northeast.
Recent reductions in oil production
After adjusting for inflation, the retail gasoline prices leading up to this Labor Day weekend were 4% lower compared to the prices preceding Labor Day in 2022, according to the EIA’s Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update.
Recent reductions in oil production by major OPEC+ producers, including Saudi Arabia, have caused international crude oil prices to rise significantly. These prices constitute the largest component of gasoline prices in the United States.
Additionally, lower-than-usual gasoline inventories and instances of refinery outages within the United States have placed upward pressure on gasoline prices throughout the summer, as highlighted by the EIA.
Unforeseen refinery disruptions
Furthermore, planned maintenance at two refineries—one in Canada and another in Pennsylvania—from mid-September to mid-November is anticipated to keep gasoline supplies constrained, especially in the Northeastern region, as per the administration’s observations.
Unforeseen refinery disruptions caused by record-high temperatures in the South have also played a role in a nearly 35-cent increase in gasoline prices so far this summer, according to the fuel-savings app GasBuddy.
GasBuddy noted that while gasoline prices have begun to moderate as summer draws to a close, there could still be one last price increase at the pump before a decrease in the fall. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, stated that if there are no unexpected oil production cuts or hurricane-related disruptions, a surge in gasoline prices can be avoided. He expects the decline in prices to accelerate as we move into late September, with gas stations transitioning to cheaper gasoline.

HALLO!! I had some ideaa, were reader is really really shy and quiet. But when it comes to a certain topic (like space, historic events or something) she gets so excited and chatty. Perhaps with Max?
I've been binge reading your fics lmao I love them!
Note: this is so kind of you to say, thank you! 🤍🫶 hopefully you'll enjoy this one too!
"This is Fred, he will be the one guiding you through the exhibition", one of the team partners greeted you and Max before directing you to follow another man.
"I'm Fred, and we're very happy you decided to come to this exhibition - I know you both really enjoy learning about these things and hopefully we can show a couple more interesting things", he smiled, allowing you to step into the first room.
Even though you preferred to stay on the side lines and would happily stay home whenever Max had some event he couldn't bring you with him, this one caught your eye and accepting the invitation wasn't something your boyfriend had to spend a great deal of time convincing you to do.
"This first room is all about the beggining of the first engine, how it was developed to then accommodate the first car and how it evolved from there - for you, Max, I'm sure you're used to the best technology out there", Fred showed you around, pointing out different facts and even showing you some detailed written notes of calculations and measures.
"This is more up your street, isn't it?", Max said as you payed attention to the writing on the book, knowing it was something you definitely wanted to spend more time on.
You nodded immediately, flashing him a big smile and carrying on with your analysis. You were on the shy side of the spectrum, happily tagging along anywhere but needing to stay quiet or speak briefly since full on interactions would empty your social battery quickly and you'd need days to recharge it back to normal. It wasn't something you did out of rudeness - you always remained polite -, but more in the way you knew your limits and how to protect yourself.
"Next up, we have the space rooms", Fred carried on once you read all of the details you wanted to, "this is a new series of rooms that have been added to the exhibition", he walked you through.
"Here we have some of the notes written and worked on by Max Valier and Friedrich Wilhelm Sander for the rocket car Opel RAK1 in Germany - let me just check on the year here", he looked for it.
"It was 1928 - they did it on the Opel raceway in Rüsselsheim, Germany, and the RAK2 rocket car was at the AVUS speedway in Berlin", you said, knowing that bit of information yourself.
"Oh, I didn't know you knew that - any special interest?", Fred asked as Max smiled, knowing you were about to go on and on about something you enjoyed.
"I have a very particular interest in WWII and as I got older, I always wanted to known how things worked and how they found out about the right way to do things - I'm an engineer because of it, and rocketships always interest me. Their work at Opel was very important in the development of Eugen Sänger's work for the space planes - do you have any of those notebooks? I'd love to look at them", you spoke for the first time since the exhibition started, you and Fred quickly getting into depths of all the topics you loved as Max watched you two interact.
(Thank you for sending this in ✨️)

Ferrari GG50 by Giorgetto Giugiaro
Concept cars are usually made before those who go straight into production. That is the reason why they are called so. Concepts do not limit the imagination of designers, but when the car comes into production, engineers take a more important role. As a result, a lovely concept of a car can sometimes become an ugly duck. However, that is the case about Hyundai, Nissan, Opel and other manufacturers that are producing millions of cars per year. It does not include the exclusive ones – Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, etc. This is a story about a car which life has been turned upside down. The production model came at first and the concept was shown off just a year after. This is a story about Ferrari GG50 – the concept car that Giorgetto Giugiaro made himself in 2005 while celebrating the 50th anniversary of creating stunning car designs.
The GG50 is based on Ferrari 612 Scaglietti series production car  – a four-seater with a front engine and rear wheel drive - a true Italian prancing horse. It has a twelve-cylinder, 5,7-liter engine under the hood, which generates 540 bhp and 588 Nm. At the time, turbochargers became extremely popular, but Ferrari tried to remain as traditional as possible. However, most engines manufactured in Modena were still highly revolutionary.
Like the original 612 Scaglietti, the following concept has the same 6-speed sequential rear-mounted gearbox, Brembo brakes, and other equipment. The main difference hides is design – the place where Giorgetto feels best.
Giugiaro took the idea a year before official presentation of GG50 and received all the support from Ferrari President at that time, Luca di Montezemolo. He gave the designer just one condition: no restrictions on creativity, but the concept must keep up with Ferrari tradition. Giugiaro started working on the concept half a year after. He did everything just like 50 years ago: sketched every detail entirely by hand, with a pencil. Finally, he created a 1:10 scale concept from four views: side, nose, tail and bird’s view. Later, the concepts were rendered in a 3D project. In April, a full-scale plaster model has been made. In June, a running prototype has been completed already! The concept has made its way from a scratch to running car in less than just five months. That’s the spirit when you’re in a hurry for your own birthday present.
Almost all technical details mentioned above remained the same except for some minor exceptions. The prototype’s wheelbase is the same, but overall length is shorter by 9 centimetres than the original 612 Scaglietti (4.81 meters vs. 4.9). The concept car is also lower – Giugiaro cut 2 centimetres of front overhang and nipped the rear by 7. There are more differences that we cannot see from outside. For example, a modified position of the 95-litre fuel tank that created a larger boot (270 vs. 240 litres). Also, a flat platform when rear seats are lowered (and a total capacity of 500 litres). The concept is more practical, no matter how funny the word “practical” sounds when we are talking about Ferrari.
Nevertheless, there are many stories about the concept’s appeal and originality. Ferrari GG50 is a true masterpiece because of the story of its creation. A very few production cars in history can boast that they have been a base for a concept car, but 612 Scaglietti is one of them.

I was dusting the house as normal, like I did every week when I saw a strange golden card note on the kitchen table labelled “for my first ancilla”
“Strange” I thought, Mistress Luci was not normally like this, sure she was affectionate at times, but that’s normal for humans to feel that way about their pets. Curious, I opened it, it said: “3pm, on the private beach, near the cove, dress your best”
The time came and I walked down the garden and down the cobbled steps onto the beach. I was dressed in Merrel sandals instead of the standard Imperial Serva heeled sandals, a pink and white pleated skirt given as a gift for good behaviour instead of my summer cherry skirt or my standard issue skirt , a Very Special Occasion (MEO-Mucha Especial Ocasión) scented wick away slave blouse instead of the standard version, and a Peugeot love heart shaped chain link Titanium alloy collar instead of the standard oval chain link medicollar
Mistress looked at me up and down like five times before saying a word. “You’re… beautiful” she finally said, clearly rendered speechless. I curtsy in front of her, “thank you Domina” i replied, remembering to use Latin as well as my native British “where are we going” she had no obligation to reply and so kept silent as we walked to the cove admiring the waves and the cool afternoon, until I could see it, her Amphibicar Fiat Chariot (think like an Italian Ford Crown Victoria or Opel Omega), those things had been around 2610 AUC (1867), but this was a 22nd generation rear mid engined 2766 (2012) Amphibian vehicle variant (itself in it’s 10th generation since 2680 (1947)) with a 5.5L Ferrari Turbo V8, modular and hydraulically adjustable bench seats front and rear, four wheel drive courtesy of Lancia and a luxurious 3-speed hydraulic automatic transmission (with three electro-locked overdrive gears tacked on in the 2760 refresh for fuel and performance, as well as to hide its age) yanked out of the Buick Sappho coupe “Mistress this is wonderful” I turned to see her and say thank you, but found her on one knee
“Julia, I have legally submitted a form for us to be married, so that you won’t have to worry about losing me, your first constant and comfort in a long time” she pulled out a finger print scanner, “all I need is your fingerprint”, I pressed down excitedly, then my tabula got a notification
“Married to Doctor Luciana Antonia Presenti MD, PhD”
And another, from Fiat Intelligencia Automobilli “Authorised Guest of Luciana Presenti’s Intelligent Control System on her 2766 Fiat Chariot”
Mistress added on, “use it wisely”
I oblige “Fiat, open doors-“
Mistress chides playfully “No slave, stupid slut, type it out in the app”
I open the app and find the command room, where I find Mistress had already done test runs, I type in, “open driver door and say “welcome Domina””. It does so flawlessly and without hesitation. Mistress blushed “thanks pet, really appreciate it” she found the 2730s Buick touchscreen still in there with updated visuals and apps, but the same size of the screen and the same working concept. She typed in, “open passenger left back door and give the back ambient red gel lights and put on brothel music”. It did so. “very funny mistress”
(Another case of part two when I feel like it)

hey!
Hi everyone, today I'm coming up with some of my usual bullshit that came to mind. yesterday while I was studying psychology I thought.. what cars would drive the engines of Sodor (obviously humanized)? so today I decided to create (if it hasn't already been created) this series.
⛔️I remember this isn't connected to my AU, I just based the characters on it. so if I ever show off some cars, unfortunately you won't find cars like that in this blog⛔️
🚗What cars would the Sodor engines drive?🚗 pt.1
Tumblr media
let's start with the fundamental column of Thomas the Tank Engine... Thomas. Thomas shows off his Nissan, I tried to imagine him on several cars, but the only one on which he was decently adequate, imagining Thomas of my Au, is the Nissan.
then Thomas will be a family man, and a wide car is perfect. then if my AU was set in 2020 this thing would be a lot. but unfortunately this is not the case so I dream.💀
Tumblr media
let's proceed with Rosie, in my AU girlfriend then wife of Thomas. Rosie, smart girl, deserves her white Polo. in my head I only saw her with this car. This Polo inside is certainly full of games to entertain little girls during trips, and the trunk will always be full of things. Rosie, the mother we all want. anyway, let's continue.🥲
Tumblr media
Let's move on to our love Eddy💓.
Edward, with two and a half children, deserves a respectable little car. the Opel is more than fine for him as the only trips he makes are from home, station, supermarket, nursery, home. (Eddy doesn't like driving on the road.😭)
Tumblr media
let's proceed with Henry, who has an Opel Astra. at the beginning he had a smaller car, then I thought that with three children he would have gotten a new one anyway. Henry, unlike Edward, is always in the car. he also follows the usual routes that every parent would do, then he often goes to visit Duchess and Spencer, or Frieda and Scott, in Barrow. he likes being with relatives and this is the right. car.
Tumblr media
Gordon has a spacious car for trips to Doncaster (and beyond) with Henry and the kids (yes, they all fit in there). His Peugeot is nothing compared to the cars of his brother and cousin (which you'll see shortly), but Gordon is fine with it.
Gordon with the Peugeot is perfect, I can see it.🤧
Tumblr media
here it is, I know you were waiting for it. he has arrived.. JAMES.
James likes to spend money, he likes to appear... so the Audi is perfect for him. (I love this car, I would like it too☠️). when he is alone he likes to speed around at full throttle, while when he is with the children he goes slowly. It may be expensive, but James isn't James without an Audi.🤭
Tumblr media
(Italians make yourself heard🗣🗣🗣). the fiat multipla is the perfect car for Daisy and Diesel, with four children and not so rich financially, this wreck is fine. especially for Daisy who goes back and forth all day between nursery, schools and the Diesel depot. the Fiat Multipla is the only car I've seen Daisy well with, I'll tell you the truth💀
Tumblr media
here he is, our man😩. I think Scott is the only one who deserves a Mercedes in this series. yes, the Gresleys have big cars🤷‍♀️.
Scott is a little richer than Gordon (and also has more kids than Gordon) so the big cars are fine for him and Frieda.
Tumblr media
last but not least.. Spencer. it was implied that he also had an SUV, although perhaps it was the most obvious. he too, full of children, has to carry them around somehow. Spencer loves his car, is obsessed with it and brags about it more than his motor body.
But now I'm bored, I have to do hygiene plans, so I publish this joke and then I disappear for a while longer. Byee🥲

Excalibur Type 35X, 1965. Styled to resemble the the 1920s Bugatti Type 35, the 35X was a project initiated by Excalibur’s European distributer who thought a second model was in order. The cars we built by Michelotti in Turin though the origins of the design are less clear. It may have been designed by Brooks Stevens and modified by Giovanni Michelotti. In any case it was powered by a 2.5 litre straight 6 from an Opel Commodore and, at just over 4 metres long, was much more compact than the American-made SS Roadster. The bodywork was manufactured by Carrozzeria Michelotti in Turin then shipped to Cannes in France for finishing and to have the engines and transmissions fitted. Production was tiny with only 27 being made. It was displayed at the 1969 New York Auto Show on Excalibur’s stand but it’s unclear if any were imported into the US.

Drive Your Corvette to Work Day
Many Corvette owners own other cars as well, and often only drive their Corvettes on special occasions. Corvettes are regularly driven on beautiful days or are taken to car shows, but usually aren’t used as commuter cars for work. But, today is different—today is Drive Your Corvette to Work Day. Sponsored by Mid America Motorworks, a supplier of aftermarket Corvette parts and accessories, the day has taken place since 2001. The goal is to get as many Corvette owners as possible around the world to drive their car, in order to show how popular the car is. It takes place on the Friday closest to June 30, the day in 1953 when the first Corvette came off the General Motors assembly line.
Harley J. Earl was no stranger to designing cars. He redesigned the LaSalle in the late 1920s, designed the Buick Y-Job—which is seen as being the first concept car, and also designed the GM Le Sabre. He then began working on “Project Opel,” which would turn into the Corvette. In its design, he took inspiration from the Jaguar XK120. On January 17, 1953, the Corvette was introduced at GM’s traveling Motorama display, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City.
Later that year, on June 30, the first Corvette for consumers came off the assembly line at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan. Tony Kleiber, a worker at the plant, drove the first car off the line. The Corvette had been named by Myron Scott, a photographer for Chevrolet. After looking in the dictionary for a word that started with a “C,” in order to give the make and model phrase an alliterative effect, he found “corvette,” the name for a small warship that was fast and easy to maneuver.
At a time when most cars were built out of steel, the Corvette was the first sports car with a body made completely of fiberglass. There were only 300 built the first year, all of which were white convertibles with red interiors and black canvas tops. They otherwise used standard Chevrolet parts, such as the “Blue Flame” six-cylinder engine, and the two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. Still, they could go from the speed of 0-60 in 11 seconds and could reach a speed of 110 mph. They had no exterior door handles, and no windows as well, just plastic curtains. They had a sticker price of $3,513, which is $32,979 in 2018 dollars. All were equipped with a $91 heater and $145 AM radio, which was added to the sticker price. 1953 models are worth much more now: the third Corvette produced was sold for 1.06 million dollars in 2006.
As of 2018, there have been seven generations of Corvettes (C1-C7). V8 engines were an option beginning in 1955, and 9 out of 10 buyers selected the option that year; all Corvettes have since been equipped with V8s. By the 1960s, the Corvette was known as America’s favorite sports car. The second generation (C2) of the car was produced from 1963-1967 and was known as the Sting Ray. One of the most popular Corvettes of all time is the 1963 model, which is unique for having a split rear window.
Corvettes have been produced in Flint, Michigan, St. Louis, Missouri, and since 1981, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where the National Corvette Museum also is also located. There were issues when making the 4th generation of the car, thus only one 1983 model exists, and production was continued with the 1984 models. The lone 1983 model can be seen at the Corvette Museum. Years after the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line, they still are towards the top of the pack for speed and acceleration. They have also been continually produced longer than any sports car or passenger car in the world.
Drive Your Corvette to Work Day is being observed today! It has been observed the closest Friday to June 30th since 2001.

1949 Opel Kapitän 2.4 L, Straight-6
The Opel Kapitän is a luxury car made in several different generations by the German car manufacturer Opel from 1938 until 1970 Manufacturer: Adam Opel AG, Rüsselsheim - Germany
Overview Production1948–1950 Powertrain Engine2.5 L I6 Transmission 3-speed
In October 1948, the Kapitän was reintroduced as Germany's first post-war six-cylinder automobile. It would have made sense to start building the Kapitän a year earlier, as the engine was also used in the Opel Blitz trucks at the time, but the occupation regulations prohibited civilian sales of passenger cars of over 1.5 litres displacement. Initial production was reserved for the occupying powers, but sales to private customers started in 1949. There was no sign of the wide range of coupé and cabriolet bodies that had broadened the model's appeal in the 1930s: the 1948 Kapitän was offered only as a saloon/sedan, based on the 1939 version.
The main differences from the pre-war model were round headlights as opposed to hexagonal ones, as well as improved leaf springs and dampers. From May 1950 the dashboard was redesigned and the shifter was relocated from the floor to the steering column. With 55 PS (40 kW; 54 hp), the first post-war Kapitän could reach a top speed of 126 km/h (78.3 mph), needed 29 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph), and consumed 13 litres per 100 kilometres (22 mpg‑imp; 18 mpg‑US) in the process.
Up to February 1951, 30,431 Kapitäns were built

1968
On Monday Earth Day, I was thinking about the student actions for Palestine at universities across the country. I am inspired by the students' bravery. I am sure they are aware of the dangers and that no matter what they will bare costs. I felt sad too.The thoughts about this year brought up memories of 1968.
I was only 13 in 1968. I am sure I conflate things that happend later with that year. But I am just as sure that 1968 rocked the foundations of my world. I was all shook up. Itwas a year that cuts time, where nothing would be as it was.
I was surprised clicking on an old link from my blog to a 50-year retrospective of 1968 in photos put together by Alan Taylor in The Atlantic. To my amasement The Atlantic let me see the article--for well over a year I have not be able to get around their paywall for any articles. If it opens for you it's a very good collection of photos.
I'm sure there are many 13-year olds taking in the events of this year sensing that this year is different. And they are wondering how to proceed.
I was thinking about Earth Day, in 1970. We had moved to Charlotte, NC and I made a really groovy teenager room. On my desk I had envelops with literature about Earth Day. I also had the book The Strawberry Statement. That book is why I had some sense of the 1968 campus protests from a student perspective, albeit a few years after. The title of the book comes from one of Columbia's Deans said in the press which students mocked as "the strawberry statement": "Whether students vote 'yes' or 'no' on a given issue means as much to me as if they were to tell me they like strawberries." The bitterness about diminishing the humanity of studnets ressonated.
One of the parts of the book I remember is the author of the book, James Kunen telling about picking up a hitchhicker. I remember it because he was driving a Dutch car called a Daffodil. In 1968 one of the moms in the car pool drove a Daf. My mom drove an Opel station wagon with a puny engine and another neighbor had an Isetta--it's a bit strange to think of small cars in the sixties. The hitchhicker was Black, Kunen read the guy as Black, but he also observed that hisskin was lighter than his own. It made racism visible in a way worth wrting about.
In 1967 Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a speech laying out the three evils of society: the sickness of racism, poverty--excessive materialism, and militarism. I probably didn't know about the speech, but do believe that I'd internalised, at least by 1970, connections between poverty, militarism and racism. A white kid in the suburbs understood that to be anti-war was also to be anti-racist and anti-colonial. It was important to know that I wasn't the only one.
My education in whiteness was also ramping up, perhaps most obviously as a factor of my age and schooling. I went to a school that was under a court-mandated desegregation plan. I was a new kid at schoo and didn't have lots of friends. There was an underground press that I didn't have much connection to, but I had some. The Earth Day materials are an axample. I would send self-adressed stamped envelops off and sometimes tape quarters to index cards, or send stamps to adresses found in the want ads of The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.
I am really happy when I see Zines on the Internet because they're familiar with the life line that made me feel connected. Young people are seeing the news. I am sure that they want to "connect, "to find the other ones" as Timothy Leary famously advised , just as I needed to.
