Now see this could be tricky, because generally if I don't get some key elements written down very quickly the idea flows away again and the 'yet' disappears, even if I remember generally what it was about, but I have one this time! I am still just enough plagued by this vision that it's not out of the question I'll go for the capture, but so far nada.

Idea was basically a Jiang family character study by way of modern au. (So tw canonical abuse.) I started from the reflection, in a modern au very high chance the Jiangs are divorced, because being a divorcee wouldn't necessarily ruin Yu Ziyuan in the modern world, as long as she was allowed to control the narrative enough that she didn’t look at fault, so it might be on the table.

Especially because modern views on child abuse are such that while she'd hold back more than she already does in terms of physical chastisement, Jiang Fengmian would also be under less societal pressure to not interfere in her disciplinary system too much, and both these factors mean he’s more likely to put his foot down.

So, concept: Jiang Fengmian, when his son is eight and his daughter thirteen, forces the issue of taking in his best friends' abused orphan child whom he’s just managed to track down in a nightmarish group home, probably leveraging the fact that wherever their money comes from it's mostly his, something he usually doesn't do, but she has always known he could, and been fucked up about it (reasonable) and hated him a little (less so) and hates him so much more now (understandable but still fucked up).

They were obviously still both pressured into this marriage by their families, because I literally cannot imagine them choosing one another of their own free will, and if they did that would be an au in an even more dramatic way than being modern, and no longer work as a character or relationship study as far as I'm concerned. I mean or it’s a cql-based au, but that’s not the version of this toxic marriage I find compelling.

Situation subsequently deteriorates to the point that when the boys are around twelve some outside party observes and is repulsed or otherwise upset by Yu Ziyuan's treatment of Wei Wuxian specifically--she's emotionally abusive to everyone in the family, canonically, and it harms Jiang Cheng significantly more than Wei Wuxian, which I think is also pretty explicit on the page, but she's more openly antagonistic about going after wwx because he's basically a proxy for her husband, whom she doesn't consider to be someone she's capable of harming.

And ofc in a modern family scenario, being abusive to your foster kid is more plainly personal misconduct than being unfair in how you discipline one of your husband's many students, even if it is his favorite. Which means she's very unlikely to chase him around with a whip, but whatever she does do will sting that much more emotionally.

Anyway the outside judgement provokes a more explicit confrontation than the last four years of maneuver and attempting to balance all the competing needs according to two very different standards. And the upshot is that by the time wwx is 13, the Jiangs are divorced. To avoid making a humiliating spectacle of themselves they present a weirdly united front in court and have a very smooth uncontested proceding, although the closed meetings with their respective lawyers involved a lot of vitriol.

Yu Ziyuan, despite having a smallish trust fund and probably a job of some kind, though one that's more prestigious than profitable like uh. Olympic fencing coach. Idk what they make but it's probably not enormous. She and Cangse Sanren probably competed in the same events back in the day.

Anyway she gets a solid chunk of alimony, the house, and primary custody of both her children, although Jiang Yanli is almost 18 at this point so mostly she just gets Jiang Cheng. Everyone thinks Jiang Cheng wants it that way, including sort of Jiang Cheng; he has this idea that if he has his mom to himself they'll finally have a good relationship, even though he's also terrified of being left all alone with her. He's complicated. Families are complicated.

Also she would never have forgiven him if he hadn't concurred that he wanted to stay with his mother because she was the only one On His Side.

Jiang Yanli ofc does not move out right away when she comes of age, in part because her brother needs her, but she probably does go to college, so she's only around part-time.

Jiang Fengmian, meanwhile, keeps most of his financial assets and Wei Wuxian, and gets his kids on the weekends.

So that's all setup for how you have this situation where Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are entering high school--probably the same school, together, but no longer sharing the commute except maybe Monday mornings--and Wei Wuxian's primary residence is Jiang Cheng's dad's apartment.

It’s really chill. They get a cleaning service in once a week and eat a lot of delivery food, but they do cook at least once a week. The canonical thing where they largely agree about what’s funny and what’s right-or-wrong, and so forth, on the one hand really pops when there’s mostly no external conflict disrupting it, but also probably gains more complexity now that it’s not a thread of positivity fighting for its life against a background of drama. They get to know each other better than they ever had a chance to in canon.

Some of that isn't all that positive, because now they have the space to discover the places where they do actually have the capacity for friction, but both of them are very good at dispersing tension (I do tend to suspect jfm's dad was abusive he sure acts like it), and on the whole it's a good thing.

Jiang Cheng is going to have such a mental health crisis, and Jiang Fengmian is going to handle it so badly. Because of course when his son starts replicating his ex-wife's toxic attitudes and behaviors more now that she has primary custody, he’s going to feel guilty and like it’s His Fault, but he’s going to feel like it’s his fault that Jiang Cheng is growing up to be a shitty abusive person.

And even if he’d never say that the subtext would come through, in the assumptions he made when framing communications and so forth, as in canon, so the thing where Jiang Cheng’s father loves Wei Wuxian more than him, or at any rate likes him better and thinks he’s a better person and prefers his company, would wind up feeding into a self-reinforcing loop.

(Jin Zixuan's nasty public remark about Jiang Fengmian treating Wei Wuxian better than his own children hits Jiang Cheng significantly harder in this scenario, where he's being Tormented by the feeling that all his peers know his dad walked out on him for another son. Wei Wuxian's punch is therefore even more clearly primarily for Jiang Cheng's sake, although Jiang Cheng is probably more inclined to see it as being for his dad's. Jin Zixuan is about halfway between the Jiang kids' ages here, so he's a senior saying this shit to a sophomore.)

So that cycle builds to the point where Jiang Cheng would eventually have one of those rare moments where he resorts to actual violence, because his poisoned feelings are choking him so bad his rationality deserts him.

He’s not going to be nearly as close to actually murdering Wei Wuxian as he was in canon the night the Jiang Sect was massacred, because it’s a less extreme situation, but he still goes for the neck. So Jiang Fengmian is in his home office one Saturday about a year and a half into this new normal, and realizes the boys are fighting. He hears through the wall the accusation you stole my dad. He says to himself, well that’s terrible but interjecting myself into this situation would definitely make it worse.

Then he hears sounds of violence, and then an ominous abrupt silence, and updates that analysis.

And when he opens the door to the boys’ room, Wei Wuxian is being strangled. He’s not really resisting, which is because he’s made the call that that’s way more likely to get Jiang Cheng to snap out of it, and thinks it might make Jiang Cheng feel better to get it out of his system (because he does sort of feel like what Jiang Cheng is going through is all his fault, or at any rate is much worse as a result of decisions made for his sake) and is severely underestimating the dangers of choking, but looks to a third party like he’s already passed out and Jiang Cheng is still at it. Which is to say, it looks like a serious murder attempt on the brink of success.

So that sure made that situation worse!

So yeah that's my idea that I probably won't write but it sure has its teeth in me.

I will admit all the gatekeeping at how Viktor should be written in fics can feel pretty discouraging sometimes and maybe even disrespectful depending on the context?

Like... It's hard to explain but it can be frustrating over time. At the same time, I understand the same people's frustration whether it be how his overall character and even his disability should be portrayed (such as removing it entirely post canon) so I get it. It just should be done as constructive criticism and giving advice, not bullying or gatekeeping as every person's experience is different and not the same. And if the author or creator is being rude about it then I probably just not engage further but that's just me, it can vary.

Idk, I do feel less and less confident over time b/c I just mostly see takes like, "How can people write him so mean?! He's a kind good boy!" or "He'd never do or say that! How can you be so stereotypical and ableist?!"

Just the way I see him I think is a slight reflection of my own experiences and I understand people doing the same in writings.

He's snarky and a bit blunt, kind but not a complete pushover either (whether or not you subscribe to him being manipulated by the Hexcore or not but that's another thing entirely), he's a pacifist but I'd say more of a relative pacifist since he does resort to a bit of violence during the show's climax, point is that he's multifaceted. Plus sometimes the same people do tend to hypocritically subscribe to either the same or even a different stereotype of his character that they're calling out so it can be like... Oy... Which is it?

Again, I get some writers and artists can be pretty problematic so I don't blame anyone trying to call them out but then there are writers that just didn't know what they were doing so just seeing the toxicity can be discouraging if that makes sense?

I don't know, maybe I'm just overthinking it since I have mentioned being a cane user irl and see a lot of myself in him (complete with lung problems in hindsight but I highly doubt asthma counts so probably not) and I have been infantilized frequently in the past so... I just don't know man... There should be a balance for sure but not like this.

florence florentine x seer! reader (mentions of sarvis x reader)

as the esteemed guild leader of the eme-an and head librarian of the library of babel, you rarely have free time on your plate. however, when the solemn and mysterious duchess of the florentine family extends a personal invitation to you, who are you to refuse?

this was inspired by florence’s affection up 3 and 4 voicelines + communication 6 voiceline.

warnings: contains spoilers from chapters 3 and 4 of the main story.

it was another busy day in canglin city. since the cerulean blight crisis was resolved, qing made necessary arrangements in the government to grant you and zero a temporary place to stay. weishi has also been fiercely helping you address the issue behind the collapse of the tower of babel. to put it simply, you don’t have the luxury to be lazing around right now. while you were cooped up in the office doing boring paperwork, zero is out and about helping the citizens of canglin city recover from the aftermath of the tragedy that struck their home.

“head librarian?” a weishi member gingerly knocks on the door frame to your temporary office. you look up from the copious amount of paperwork on your desk to the woman in front of you. “yes, what is it?” the woman fumbles her hands around in her pockets before she presents a slightly wrinkled white envelope to you. the rich purple color of the seal on it immediately catches your eye, but you don’t recognize it. “who is this from?” quirking an eyebrow, you stare at her as she smiles in response.

“it’s from the duchess of the florentine family!”

“who?”

the woman gasps, clearly not expecting such an absurd response from the head librarian out of anyone. “ah right, you don’t know everyone in the c.a.v.e yet…” you sheepishly rub the back of your neck as she sighs. she gives you a quick rundown of the duchess’ identity and her family, and your eyes widen. you could’ve never guessed that she would be someone this important!

“well, i’ll leave you to it, head librarian.” before you could open the envelope, the weishi member walks away and leaves your office, not wanting to be accused of snooping around in the business affairs of the head librarian of eme-an. the letter itself had a hint of lavender to it. how fancy, you almost feel sorry for ripping this envelope open.

when your eyes quickly scan through the words on the paper within, they slowly widen in pure shock once more. you fear you had too many surprises in one day already, but this letter really takes the cake!

the duchess of the florentine family, florence florentine, extended a personal invitation to you to visit the mansion of the florentine family tomorrow morning for a nice chat over a cup of tea and pastries with her. a singular word keeps repeating in your head.

why?

what could she possibly want with you?

despite your doubts, here you are now, standing in front of the old and elegant mansion. honestly, you’re unsure if this was even the right thing to do, but considering the florentine family is another secret alliance, like weishi, they’re also a member of the c.a.v.e. with this information in mind, you highly doubt she’ll have ulterior motives. and even though you wish you brought zero along with you, you felt guilty abandoning your duties in canglin city, so you had her take care of the paperwork instead. she was initially less than enthusiastic about the idea of letting you go so far away in an unfamiliar place without her protection, but with enough persuasion from you she relented in the end.

well, here goes nothing! you close your eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath before stepping forward inside the grand doors of the mansion. immediately you were greeted with marble statues and large oil paintings in every direction. the weishi member wasn’t lying when she said the florentine family placed a great deal of importance on art. one of the maids who seemingly popped up out of nowhere quietly leads you in the direction of a hall.

it’s quiet here, too quiet. you were starting to grow nervous. you're not suddenly gonna get ambushed, right?

realizing you were being too paranoid, you calm yourself down with deep breaths. you don’t hear a single peep from the maid. to you, the long stretch of silence was agonizing to bear.

after what felt like a millennia, you were surprised to step foot in what looks like a grand indoor greenhouse. plants and flowers of all shapes, colors, and sizes flood your vision. you were so busy staring at them in awe you didn’t even notice the maid beside you slinking away in the darkness and the inquisitive stare of the duchess a few feet away from you.

“ahem, greetings, guild leader of the eme-an. it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” you snap your attention to her as she puts her right hand on her chest and bows, her silky white long hair gently swaying behind her as she does so. “oh, uh, greetings to you too, duchess!” you reply awkwardly.

“you can call me by my name, florence. i’d like to hear you call me that.”

“um, sure!”

florence quietly observes your form. you look exactly the same like her ancestor, sarvis florentine, had described two thousand years ago. how peculiar… yet interesting.

she suddenly recalls the many journals sarvis had written over the course of his life, all of which were carefully preserved in a secluded part of the mansion only known to her. only one of them stood out to her; it was a journal detailing his love and longing for you. the lovelorn young general then waxing poetic about his woes. she doesn’t blame him for engaging in a political marriage despite being in love, after all he had his obligations to fulfill in bellefontaine. he couldn’t let the precious “city of blossoms” emperor thurinus had graciously given him be tarnished in vain because of his selfishness. that's why he still took great care of his children and family. florence admires his tenacity befitting of a general, it mustn't have been easy. before she could reminisce further, she snaps herself out of her reverie, focusing on you once more.

“with pleasantries out of the way, shall we go take a look at these flowers for a moment?” florence offers. with this, you slowly let your guard down. she’s harmless, she won’t do anything.

spending time with florence was interesting to say the least. she was accommodating and kind during your first visit there, albeit a little bit distant. you were surprised when she told you to “come visit her from time to time”, you didn’t think she would like you, apparently you were proven wrong. against your better judgment, you agreed and gave her your word.

unfortunately, your stay in canglin city was prolonged because of the emergence of random anomalies in qian; it was a huge pain in the ass to deal with. but whenever you’re in need of some reprieve from the stress of it all, you quietly slip away to go visit the mansion you had grown familiar with. inside, florence readily greets you with a soft smile every time you come through those doors.

“let me teach you japeth ballroom dancing. it will come in handy on the day of the festival of the holy oath.” you remember her telling you this during a prior visit, and today, you find yourself clumsily following along her steps. as she guides you, her gloved hand on your waist was gentle. it was as if she was holding glass and was scared of it shattering underneath the weight of her hand. her armored hand holding yours was firm, intent on not letting you go no matter what.

the close proximity between the two of you was starting to make you feel flustered; you’re not used to this, especially with florence. with you being close to her like this, you can see the determination in her purple eyes. she’s clearly taking this seriously.

what you don’t know was it’s taking all of her strength not to pull you in and kiss you. when did she start feeling this way about you? she’s not sure, but now she understands why sarvis had been so smitten with you. you’re… incredibly easy to be around with. your kindness, sincerity, and courage despite being unaware of the gravity of your powers as the head librarian were something she took notice of overtime. she now sees you in a brand new light, and just like him, in her eyes, you’re a hero. so maybe it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the oath she holds near to her heart is not something she cherishes only because of her family's principles anymore. you gave meaning to it.

florence would be damned if she lets go of you now, for you’ve become important to her.

“come, stand by my side, and let me show you the renewed bellefontaine. i will introduce you to everything about her; no one else can resist the beauty that flourishes here—don’t you agree?”

me still chewing on this (i say, apropos of nothing), but it's hard to find the exact words i want to use when i say that emmrich has the vibe of a badly socially adjusted homeschooler? that he's sheltered? i think it's because there's an inherent awkwardness in how he approaches other people - specifically most of the conversations he has with everyone in the lighthouse - verses how he talks to, like, myrna and vorgoth.

i absolutely don't think it's a lack of confidence, at all, when talking to, say, neve or davrin or even rook, but with some of the things he asks, it's clear he can't parse the reasonings for some things? like...they're outside of his realm of experience, or are clearly a bad idea to someone else, or require a certain social understanding he lacks, so he comes across as naive when he's not. he's just...sheltered.

compared to how his conversations with myrna and vorgoth vibe, where he's clearly speaking from a place of experience and knowledge. it sounds less like he's got this really neat factoid he wants to share - because he doesn't have to frame it in that way, there's an understanding between them - and there is some...i guess speaking with authority that he might lack in other things.

after graduating high school and moving to tokyo for college, madoka makes a point of visiting the dojimas at least once a year.

depending on the verse/her future spouse and their preferences, she might ultimately move back to inaba after school and get a job at whatever off-screen elderly care facility is available, or at the hospital, or even at yasogami high. her preference is the former, but hey. a registered nurse has options!

just wanted to say all otom.e mcs are beautiful. it doesn't matter if she's superpowered or someone who cannot win a fight, someone who will speak back or someone who is shy. if she's a self insert or has her own fully fleshed backstory / personality. shows her face or is one of those 2012 women who have a shadow covering her entire expression. the enjoyment of the otom.e genre is having all of these available and i will not be silenced on it! 💝💖
