I found their work at a time when I was starting to accept my approaching adulthood and willing to admit my life was mine to change.

As an avid book reader and nerd, I discovered John Green and his books through the ‘Top 100’ lists the internet loves to produce.

After months of hearing his name, I succumbed to reading his books, within a week I had read ‘Looking for Alaska’ through to ‘Will Grayson, Will Grayson’. I was hooked.

This experience did not lead me to Vlogbrothers though, that privilege rests with Maureen Johnson, a recommended twitter account as an author who uses twitter for fun, not promotion (I forget where I read this).

Anyone that follows Maureen Johnson knows how easy it is to find John Green on Twitter and then, from there, find Hank Green (I also found @sportswithJohn, which I am less happy with, as an avid Everton F.C fan). Around this time, I was becoming aware of my impending twentieth birthday and the ending of my teenage years.

My birthday would also be the start of my second year away from home (September birthdays, ay), studying for a physics degree I didn’t think I was equipped to complete. Watching the Vlogbrothers videos helped me to become aware of the bigger problems our society faces and they helped me to look at myself.

I also rediscovered my passion for science and physics through SciShow, Hank Green’s enthusiasm for discovery helping me to rediscover my own (I now own the lunar module SciShow t-shirt).

From watching the videos and reading their quotes, from wandering (via the internet) Nerdfighteria and discovering new authors, my opinion of depression shifted and I began to see the signs in my own life.

Sadly, I found Ned Vizzini’s book ‘It’s a Kind of Funny Story’ after his death, from reading the tributes of those who knew and admired him.

From his book, I accepted my parents’ reaction wouldn’t be perfect but I could ask for their help, especially when I realized I couldn’t go to a doctor without some support.

I’m working on getting better now.

I am a believer in the right book at the right time but I also think this can apply to John and Hank Green, the right people at the right time.

During Project For Awesome 2013, I chose the coin as my perk.

I received it around a month ago and I have carried it in my pocket ever since.

It is a reminder there is a community with values to aspire to, that I am a good person even if I sometimes slip up and, because it is a rule of the internet, the coin is a reminder to Don’t Forget To Be Awesome (I’m being sincere, I swear).

Precis: In the article “How expanded replay has hurt the NBA”(2016). Austin Ryback claims that expansion of instant replay has actually hurt the NBA.The author uses videos and statistics to prove that instant replay is hurting the game. The authors purpose is to show that even the advancement in technology in the game is interesting but is actually hurting it. The authors audience is basketball fans, analytics, commentators, sports fans.

Analysis: I agreed with the publisher in this article but not totally. He listed good facts and history between instant replay and how the league is picking apart the game. I don't agree with is that all technology is bad for the game, there are machines that rebound four times the amount as one person can. Not only that but the medical side has advanced because of technology. This is helping our athletes recover faster and improve their performance.

The project made me feel like I could actually help despite all the problems and limits I have, that I WAS doing something valuable just by participating in the ways I could - watching, commenting, and sharing.

I discovered the Vlogbrothers shortly before the 2013 Project 4 Awesome, and really became a fan during those few days. I cared about many issues and wanted to improve people’s lives long before then, but the project made me feel like I could actually help despite all the problems and limits I have, that I WAS doing something valuable just by participating in the ways I could - watching, commenting, and sharing.

Watching the livestream, the p4a videos, and all of the people involved lifted my mood from a previous low and gave me back some hope for improvement in the future.

Since then, Hank’s music has provided hours of laughter and entertainment (and gotten me a few strange looks from people passing me as I sang along).

John’s books, the two I’ve been able to get a hold of from a library to read anyway, have made me think as well as laugh.

The Vlogbrothers videos have provided insight and helped me understand a few issues, as well as plenty more things to make me laugh. They’ve also inspired me to make a few desktop wallpapers and other little things, and to think up many more I just haven’t gotten around to (or don’t have what I’d need to) make.

So pretty much...John and Hank have made me laugh, made me feel less helpless against world suck, inspired me, and made me feel better about myself. So to John, and Hank, and all the awesome Nerdfighters out there: thanks for everything you do, and don’t forget to be awesome.”

Nerdfighter Notes

Hi!

I became a Nerdfighter in the Spring or Summer of 2013. I had been on Tumblr for a few months by then and had already found a couple of people to talk with and discovered the world of fandom and shipping though them. I was inspired to watch and read the things they liked, so I went out and bought an English edition of TFiOS, after I’ve seen people’s posts about it.

I’m German, but I really wanted to improve my English during that time and made a point of reading and watching English books and shows in the original version. It was a pain at first, I always had a dictionary on hand and had to look up loads of words. Nowadays, I only have to look up 1-5 words per book but I haven’t dared to read classics like Jane Austen’s books yet.

Anyway, I had bought the book and finally decided to read it a couple of months after the purchase. Then I noticed a little note between the pages, saying:

I had never found a note in book before and wondered why a stranger would care enough to put it there. I was touched by it but I don’t think I checked out the YouTube channel immediately. Instead I the rest of John’s books and became more and more curious about him, especially because Looking for Alaska sounds like the author has some personal boarding school experience. So I finally looked up vlogbrothers on YouTube. I can’t remember what my first video was, but I’m pretty sure I subscribed a few months before the first Nerdfighter census happened.

I love Nerdfighteria and have written a few of my own Nerdfighter Notes and hidden them in John’s books since. My Pizza John shirts are my favorite thing to wear and I always watch as much of the P4A live stream as I can. Sadly, I couldn’t convince any of my friends to become part of the community and don’t know any other Nerdfighters personally, but I still feel like I’m part of the community because it’s so welcoming.
